May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders of the United States. Originating after U.S. Congress action in 1997, this commemoration serves to highlight the vastness of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, which spans more than 30 countries where over 100 different languages are spoken, and where the experiences are equally as varied. From the migration stories to their stories of colonial resistance, the work of prominent figures such as Dr. Haunani Kay Trask, Carols Bulosan, Yuri Kochiyama, Grace Lee Boggs, Pauline Park and Justice Mary I. May was Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a chance to celebrate the history, diversity, and contributions of the over 25 million members of the AAPI community in the United States. But rising U.S.-China tensions have also come with consequences for the community, particularly Chinese Americans, who have reported increased discrimination and feelings of exclusion in the last few years. April is a time for the Syracuse University community to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. This year's theme is “Community Coming Together: Strength in Unity," representing the University's diverse AAPI community uniting across our differences to demonstrate they are a strong voice that can face challenges together. It's an important and timely theme, especially following the challenges of the last three years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a troubling rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and bias incidents. On this student-centric 'Cuse Conversation, we hear from AAPI Planning Committee members MaryKate Keevins '24, who is studying television, radio and film in the Newhouse School and political science in the Maxwell School, and Lia Margolis '23, a student in the School of Architecture. They discuss planning this year's celebrations, why they wanted to get involved, what their cultural heritage means to them and how their time at Syracuse University helped them discover more about their identities.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders of the United States. Originating after U.S. Congress action in 1997, this commemoration serves to highlight the vastness of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, which spans more than 30 countries where over 100 different languages are spoken, and where the experiences are equally as varied. From the migration stories to their stories of colonial resistance, the work of prominent figures such as Dr. Haunani Kay Trask, Carlos Bulosan, Yuri Kochiyama, Grace Lee Boggs, Pauline Park and Justice Mary I. Yu reflects the continued resilience of these communities and identities. Our featured event is Bringing Mooberry Families Together Again. On Wednesday, April 27th, Mooberry Elementary School held four events in one evening: Día de los Niños, Student Culture Fair, Art Gallery & Projects, and Mooberry Community Corral Raffle Tables. HiIghlights included a performance by HSD's Una Voz mariachi band, performances by 3rd and 4th graders, games & activities, free pizza for kids, and more! The Mooberry community greatly appreciated this opportunity to be together in person and celebrate their amazing students! www.hsd.k12.or.us

April is a time for the Syracuse University community to come together and celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. This year's theme is “Regrounding: Celebrating Our Identity,” focusing on sharing and celebrating the pride, strength and joy demonstrated by our on-campus AAPI community. It's an important theme, especially following the challenges of the last two years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a troubling rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and bias incidents. On this student-centric 'Cuse Conversation, we hear from Merci Sugai G'22, the AAPI Planning Committee co-chair, and Hyejun Yoo '22, who moderated the commemorative lecture Q&A with Michelle Zauner. They discuss planning this year's celebrations, why they wanted to get involved and how their time at Syracuse University helped them discover more about their identities.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, this episode discusses the plight of the AAPI community from historical and current perspectives. This episode features special guests, Dr. Thuy Ho-Ellsworth, a board certified foot and ankle surgeon and Allison Maladore, MS, a Doctor of Public Health Student (DrPH). Dr. Ho-Ellsworth and Allison provide suitable solutions to mitigate AAPI hate in our current social climate and beyond. Both Allison and Dr. Ho-Ellsworth share the plight they both faced as either a child of Asian American immigrants or as a first generation immigrant from Laos and Thailand, respectively. Steps to promote solidarity against Asian hate in medicine, public health, and communities are discussed in order to bring about sustainable changes that will propel the AAPI community forward, and ultimately helping to eradicate AAPI hate for our posterity.

Beth and Dianne speak with Tammy Tran, Senior Manager of Government Relations at Southern California Edison (SCE), about her journey to career success,  her wide range of experience across government, nonprofits, and corporate environments, and perspectives and advocacy when it comes to Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.Tammy conveys her personal story and expertise, starting with her family's experience as first-generation immigrants to specific guidance on how professional environments can ensure that their DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) efforts are genuine. Tammy has over 15 years of experience working in government, election campaigns, media, and grassroots nonprofit organizations. Prior to working at SCE, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff and District Director for the California State Senate and as the executive director of a nonprofit. SCE, also known as SoCal Edison,  is one of the largest electric utilities in the US and a longtime leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency. SCE delivers power to 15 million people in 50,000 square-miles across central, coastal, and Southern California, excluding the City of Los Angeles and some other cities.

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! On this episode of Popping The Bubble, we invited three guests—Chloe Chisholm, Min Lee, and Kyle Layne-Allen—to speak about what it means to stand in solidarity with the AAPI community. We engaged in deep and reflective conversation about what “allyship” truly means and looks like. The lack of representation for the APPI community and the scarcity of knowledge about what they face is not talked about as much as it should be.
