Coach Lisa Steele is doing her best to keep South Jersey Girls Basketball in the conversation by playing against top team across the state. She grew up in Erial, NJ and played at Highland High School in the early 2000's. She scored 2,203 points in high school. She was a key member of the 2004 team that finished with a record of 28-1 and won the South Jersey Group 3 Title. After a successful high school career, she decided to play at George Washington. GW was a top team in the A-10 Conference and made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA's. Unfortunately, Steele dealt with a series of stress fractures that impacted her career and limited her practice and playing time. When she was healthy enough to play, she made it a point to make an impact in key moments of the game. Coach Lisa Steele made the transition to coaching. She started by working with AAU teams while she was still a player in college. After college she worked camps at various colleges to gain experience and ended up coaching at Mount Saint Mary's and Wagner. Eventually she decided to return to South Jersey. Alex Solsma has a conversation with the new principal at the Basilica School of Saint Mary, Dan Cinalli, on this edition of our podcast.  A longtime resident of Northern Virginia, Mr. Cinalli attended Catholic schools in the Diocese of Arlington from grades K-12. He holds a BA in English from George Mason University and also earned a Masters of Education Administration with a concentration in Catholic School Leadership from Marymount University. He most recently was the principal at Saint Michael School in Annandale, a role he had held since July 2016. He previously was assistant principal at Saint Timothy Catholic School in Chantilly, the second largest parish school in our diocese, from July 2013 to 2016. Prior to that, Mr. Cinalli served as an English teacher at Paul VI High School in Fairfax for more than three years and worked for Computer Sciences Corporation of Chantilly before becoming an educator. Founded in 1795, the Basilica of Saint Mary in Old Town Alexandria is the first Catholic parish established in Virginia. Pope Francis named the church a minor basilica on December 6, 2017 due to its important role in the growth of the Catholic Church in North America.

“Love you and the Lord.” These were the inspiring words of the one and only Priscilla Frederick, track and field coach at Paul VI High School, and 2016 Olympian, during her visit to The Vault this week. The authentic and ever-positive young woman leads a joy-filled conversation with Mike and Pete, to discuss her own accomplishments in track and field, the importance of living a life grounded in the Lord, and her passions, which, appropriately as this was recorded shortly after May the 4th, include Star Wars.

The free faithraiser to benefit vocations includes a Mass, confession, food, family entertainment and a 5K Race/ 1 mile walk that has become a spirited tradition for people of all ages in the past seven years of its existence, and has contributed to the growing conversation on vocations in South Jersey. Paul VI High School in Haddonfield... for an all-day gathering of the more than 600 men and women teaching in the Diocese's elementary and secondary schools. Joining them on-location were Kara Hastings, Math teacher at Resurrection Catholic elementary school in Cherry Hill; Heather Crisci, Principal of Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill; Joe Williams, from Saint Michael the Archangel Regional Elementary School, Clayton; and Chris Materazzo, English teacher at Saint Joseph High School, Hammonton. Topics covered: the vocation of the Catholic school teacher, challenges in the classroom, mentors, and thoughts on the morning's keynote session with Dr. Saundra Kennedy, who works with Catholic schools in Louisiana and Mississippi.

This week, it's a first for Talking Catholic, as Mike and Pete are graced with the presence of a religious sister, Sister Dianna Higgins, a Franciscan Missionary of the Infant Jesus. Sister Dianna, a teacher at Paul VI High School and facilitator of a monthly women's discernment group, discusses where youth and young adults are today, and how they can best understand God's call for their lives. As well, she provides insight into an upcoming initiative for South Jersey's young adults on spiritual direction.

With commencement season upon us, John Yeager from Paul VI High School in Haddon Township, takes Mike and Pete to school. The English and Film Professor recaps his year, and shares why literature is crucial to the formation of young minds. And just in time for summer, he passes out his recommended summer reading list.
