That was what I was really worried about - what would retirement be like? So many people are rushing towards it, and they don't really think about what life will be like afterwards. And I was thinking a lot about how I would spend my time, what I would do, what the challenges might be, and what's caught me by surprise is just this feeling of joy. I feel like a kid on the first day of summer vacation, and I know this won't last. Everything changes. This is kind of the honeymoon period, but yeah, it's really fun.Well, I'm incredibly blessed and lucky that the financial stuff was in place. It was taken care of, and it allowed me to retire a little bit earlier than the norm. But again, the other thing that surprised me was how hard that decision was to make, because I really loved what I did...And then a friend and former colleague of mine died in a car accident. And he was only 61 and we'd spent a lot of time talking about what we were going to do in retirement. And it brought home the fact that we don't have infinite time." On Semi-Retirement - and Off-Ramps "I think it's the best option, especially, if you like what you do, and you have skills that can continue on in retirement where you don't need to work full-time. I had really wanted an off-ramp from my job at NerdWallet, and they didn't support working part-time. So that was kind of a difficult thing to wrap my head around and realize, okay, I don't have this option, so this was the next best. A lot of companies, though, do have some kind of off-ramp, and I think it helps people a lot because you keep your foot in the workplace, you can have continuing, you know, because social interaction is so important, you can have that part of your identity still remain intact so you have that sense of purpose. You're making some money, which for a lot of people is really important to make their money last, but you're starting the process of exiting. And just as a rant on the side,

But what if life throws a curve ball at you that prevents you from working? What is your safety net? This episode illuminates why "safety nets" and "off-ramps" are imperative to the small entrepreneur. Lance and Randy explain how to forecast these and build them into your retirement plan, even if you are nearing retirement. While the episode focuses on the needs of entrepreneurs, it is also very relevant to W9 employees.   Highlights from the interview:   00:51 Lance paints the predicament of a person ten years away from retirement without a solid retirement plan.   02:48 Randy introduces concepts of "Safety Nets" and "Off-Ramps."   03:40 Randy explains how to insure your income if you can no longer work.   06:35 Randy defines "off-ramps" and suggests how to plan for them in advance.   09:00 Lance asks Randy for clarification of the finer points of off-ramps.   10:18 They discuss the merits of buying investments like real estate.   10:45 Lance describes the dangers and limitations of "the addiction to the cash flow" and the benefits of having a "sellable asset."   14:50 Lance depicts how buying apartments is a robust catch-up plan for both a "safety net" and an "off-ramp." He expounds that you can do this without your own money.   17:00 Randy provides two recommendations to the question, "What is your best investment?"   18:08 Lance explains that the three available roles for people wanting to invest in small apartments are based on the "ROI vs. time" consideration.   21:10 Randy summarizes the options for "safety nets" and "off-ramps."   22:00 Lance expands on his summary of these concepts.   Resources:   ●     Buy Lance's upcoming book (launching on Amazon on March 1st), "Apartment Alchemy: 50 Ways Small Apartment Owners Can Boost Their Cash Flow and Wealth." 200% of the proceeds of this book are going to the Intrepid Hero's Fund when you purchase on Launch Day, Mar 1st. ●     Go to www.FallenHeroesFund.org to learn about this fantastic charity. ●     Explore www.LanceEdwards.com to learn more about Lance's training and real estate investment opportunities. ●     Sign up for Randy's newsletter at www.LifetimeParadigm.com and learn about Randy's services and get his FREE “Financial Independence Toolkit” at www.LifetimeParadigm.com/toolkit ●     If you want to learn how to earn a high return on real estate investments, go to www.FreeApartmentsBook.com to receive a FREE copy of Lance's best-selling book, “How to Make Big Money in Small Apartments.”

#159 - When it comes to leading volunteers, clarity and communication may just be two of the most important words to keep in mind and practice as a leader because they play such a huge role in fostering health, longevity, and relationship for your volunteers. One of the biggest reasons we see volunteers not sticking around for very long in a certain ministry isn't so much that they don't enjoy it, but rather because they aren't sure what they've signed up for; is it a life-long commitment? Just for the summer? And on today's episode of the podcast, we sit down with our friend Leann Woelk and talk about creating healthy on ramps and off ramps for your volunteers, and the benefits that come from doing so. We hope you enjoy episode 159 of the Lead Volunteers Podcast and share it with a ministry leader you know who may find this beneficial for their ministry context! With increasing talk about nuclear threats, we have three questions in this episode: What do we know from Putin's past behavior that could inform how high up the ladder of escalation he is prepared to go? What are the next rungs up the ladder of escalation before the nuclear threat is real? As Putin moves up this escalatory ladder, what are the calculations of Zelensky, Europe's leaders, and President Biden? Military analyst and Russia historian Fred Kagan returns to the podcast. Fred is the director of the American Critical Threats Project at the American Enterprise Institute and a former professor of military history at West Point, where he taught for ten years. Fred regularly advises senior US military commanders. He earned his PhD in Russian and Soviet military history at Yale University. Fred has a contrarian take on possible off-ramps for Putin (spoiler-alert: he doesn't think there are any). And Fred also has a contrarian take on President Biden's recent comments about a “nuclear armageddon”. To follow Fred Kagan's work, the easiest way to do that is to go to AEI.org and understandingwar.org.

Chris Skinner is known as one of the most influential people in technology, and as an independent commentator on fintech through his blog, The Finanser.com. His latest book (sixteenth!) is called Doing Digital. He is Chair of Nordic Future Innovation, is a non-executive director of 11:FS and on the advisory boards of many FinTech and financial firms. Mr. Skinner has been an advisor to the United Nations, the White House, the World Bank and the World Economic Forum. He is a visiting lecturer with Cambridge University, as well as, a TEDx speaker. In recent years, he has been voted one of the UK's foremost fintech observers by The Telegraph and one of the most influential people in financial technology by the Wall Street Journal's Financial News and Thomson Reuters. Chris is also a successful children's author and co-founder of The Portrait Foundation, a non-profit platform to encourage children and the arts. Let's start with the recent crash in crypto, in your blog you state that you believe the end-game will be a hybrid model of CBDCs, stablecoins and cryptocurrencies. I found is fascinating that you state that too many people believe these currencies are all about HODLing (in the crypto slang it's about keeping them as an investment) instead of what currencies are really about, which is allowing the exchange of value to buy and sell products and services. It's all about creating currencies that work for value exchange in a networked world.Would you like an opportunity to give this more depth for those just beginning to invest in cryptocurrency and please define CBDC (central back digital currency)? What is your take on a global coin and how this would affect governments if it's realized? A coin that can be traded anywhere, anytime, in real-time with anyone.Your book, Digital Human, explores the transformations that are sweeping through all spheres of life: the domination of global digital giants; the advent of new financial structures (FinTech); the disruption brought about by Bitcoin; the rise of robots; and the fall of banks.A standout line from your book: not only will everyone on the planet be connected digitally, they can be raised out of poverty through inclusion. Can we dive into your thoughts on blockchain, cryptocurrency and how this may level the playing field for those in poverty?Digital for Good looks at everything from how banking plays a role in the climate emergency through the FinTech world using technology to overcome issues of inequality and inclusion. I'd like to understand this intersection, can you share your vision for Fintech in lifting us out of this global climate crisis and possibly helping marginalized lives?Chris Skinner's Blog, The Finanser Chris Skinner, LinkedinChris Skinner, TwitterHolly Shannon's WebsiteZero To Podcast on AmazonHolly Shannon, LinkedinHolly Shannon, InstagramHolly Shannon, TwitterWatch Culture Factor and VaynerNFT#nfts #nft #nftart #cryptocurrency #blockchain #metaverse #culturefactor #web3 #smartcontracts #bitcoin #nftartist #nftcollectors #eth #ethereum #youtubers #tiktok #instagram #reels #branding  #entrepreneur #coach #consulting #zerotopodcast #podcast #jobsearching #thoughtleader #thoughtleadership #startapodcasttoday #startapodcastalready   #experiences #experientialmarketing #companyculture #employeeengagment #community #peertopeer #decentralizedeconomy

What are on-ramps and off-ramps? Welcome to the cryptohunt jam where we spend one minute a day to explain crypto. In plain english. You've likely heard the terms on-ramp and off-ramp in the crypto context before. And of course you figured out that we are not talking about actual ramps leading on and off freeways. But those on- and off-ramps serve a similar purpose in the crypto world: They describe the process of buying into crypto and selling out of crypto for real-world money. How does it work? Very simple. To on-ramp, you use a provider, for example a crypto exchange like Coinbase or Binance, that will connect with your bank account or credit card. Then they charge you real-world money, such as Dollars or Euros, and give you crypto in exchange. Off-ramp is exactly the opposite. Sell crypto for money, send the money back to your account. And you can see why both are essential. Without people on-ramping into crypto, blockchains would have no value. And if you couldn't sell again, there wouldn't be many reasons to buy into it in the first place, given that paying for everyday purchases with crypto is still not really a thing at all. And if you've ever gone through the process yourself, you will know that these providers ask for a ton of personal information: They don't exactly make it easy to buy in and out. In the next episode we'll talk about why: A little acronym called KYC is at fault. Stay tuned until then! We are thrilled you are listening to this podcast! Fabian has the somewhat controversial opinion that regultaros should ditch consumer protection as a goal all together, and trust that each individual should be free to decide what to do with their money, and take responsibility for their decisions. From the Arroyo Seco Parkway, which began construction during the Great Depression, to the Century Freeway, completed in 1993, author Paul Haddad provides an entertaining and thought-provoking history of the 527 miles of roadways that comprise the Los Angeles freeway system. Each of Los Angeles's twelve freeways receives its own chapter, and these are supplemented by "Off-Ramps"--sidebars that dish out pithy factoids about Botts' Dots, SigAlerts, and all matter of freeway lexicon, such as why Southern Californians are the only people in the country who place the word "the" in front of their interstates, as in "the 5," or "the 101." Freewaytopia also explores those routes that never saw the light of day. Imagine superhighways burrowing through Laurel Canyon, tunneling under the Hollywood Sign, or spanning the waters of Santa Monica Bay. With a few more legislative strokes of the pen, you wouldn't have to imagine them--they'd already exist. Haddad is joined in conversation by Steve DeVorkin. _______________________________________________   Produced by Natalie Freeman, Lance Morgan, & Michael Kowaleski. In this episode, Jeffrey takes a seat as an armchair military strategist to discuss potential off-ramps for both sides in this ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. No one wins when bullets start flying but all wars eventually have to end and lives need to return to normal. We evaluate the most likely outcomes for victory from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides of this conflict while also establishing that Russia has already lost the strategic initiative in this conflict. Outlining 6 different off-ramps (2 for Ukraine and 4 for Russia), it is clear that the violence will unfortunately continue for the foreseeable future and that the pathway of the strong-man authoritarian leader are not always easy to navigate. To support the people of Ukraine, whether they are within the countries borders being shelled or have moved beyond them to new homes as refugees, I recommend following the links here. As the war in Ukraine continues into its fourth week, the picture on the ground has largely remained the same in recent days, with the Russian military making only minimal progress toward its objectives. Meanwhile, negotiations are continuing but look highly unlikely to produce tangible results in the next couple of weeks—Putin knows that the conflict will eventually be settled at the negotiating table, and Russia is therefore likely to increase the brutality of its tactics in the short-term with the aim of compelling Zelensky into concessions. Finally, the risk of an expanded conflict remains, demonstrated by Moscow's recent attack on a training facility near the Polish border as well as its warnings that Western arms convoys could be considered “legitimate targets” for attack. Mike Kofman and Jeff Edmonds join Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend to examine the continuing war and potential trajectories. Mike Kofman is the Research Program Director in the Russia Studies Program at CNA as well as an Adjunct Senior Fellow at CNAS. His research focuses on Russia and the former Soviet Union, specializing in Russian armed forces, military thought, capabilities, and strategy. Jeff Edmonds is a Research Scientist with CNA's Russia Studies Program and an Adjunct Senior Fellow at CNAS. PULL QUOTE: “What I learned in academia is that, when you publish it sits on a shelf. Some of the joy I have at Culture@Work is working so closely with organizations who implement policies and programs. Your insights, your wisdom, doesn’t sit on a shelf – it really comes to life.” - Laura Sherbin   Laura Sherbin, managing director of Culture@Work, speaks with LRN's Ben DiPietro about the joy she gets from taking academic research about how people behave, and sharing it with organizations to help them improve their corporate cultures. She discusses the vital role diversity and inclusion play in creating strong, values-base cultures of ethics and integrity. Sherbin is an economist who specializes in the creation of advantage through inclusion and diversity. She earned her Ph.D in economics from American University. Most recently, she served as co-president at the Center for Talent Innovation in New York, a think tank and content provider that studies global workplace diversity. Sherbin built a rigorous data analytics machine and team that have been core to innovative approaches to measuring and tracking employee experiences. She is known as a leading expert in applying diversity and inclusion data to human behavior in organizations, and using such data to quantify how workforce sentiments and satisfaction affect company bottom lines. She taught "Women and Globalization" at the School of International and public affairs at Columbia University, and is a coauthor of Harvard Business Review articles "How Diversity Can Drive Innovation;" "How Gen Y and Boomers Will Reshape Your Agenda;" and "Off-Ramps and On-Ramps Revisited," and several Harvard Business Review research reports.   What You’ll Learn on This Episode: [0:51] What is the mission of Culture@Work, what does the firm do to help companies improve culture, and are there specific areas on which Laura focuses? [1:53] What’s an example of a lagging indicator and one of a leading indicator? [3:42] What inspired Laura’s interest in culture in organizations and what was the career path that led her to become the managing director of Culture@Work? [4:54] One of the most important times to learn about ethics and integrity is before someone is hired. Do organizations pay enough attention to ethics during onboarding and recruiting, and how they can improve in that area? [6:24] Is Laura finding that companies are shifting more towards this, or is there still resistance toward the expense, time and effort required? [7:31] Younger people coming into the workforce are probably going to be more committed to some of these value-based standards. Instead of companies interviewing for employees, it’s employees interviewing for companies. It’s going to be the companies who are going to have to answer the questions and meet the standards of the employees more than the other way around. How has Laura seen that in play? [8:36] If a strong culture is impossible without ethics, trust, transparency, and accountability, how can organizations work to establish these in their operations if they’re lacking. What are some of the ways they can go about doing that? [10:51] What are two of the biggest challenges companies and organizations face when they’re trying to improve their culture? What can they do to overcome these things and make these improvements? [13:44] what are two or three red flags that may signal that an organization is having issues with its culture, and why are these sometimes so hard to spot? Or are they actually there, but people just don’t want to acknowledge them? [15:40] How can diversity and inclusion help build these robust cultures and how can that make a lot of these red flags disappear?
