Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Josh Taylor of KDKA-TV and 93.7 The Fan.The Pittsburgh Steelers hired a new offensive assistant coach in Glenn Thomas, but he's not necessarily Matt Canada's replacement at offensive coordinator. Still, he could be a help to Kenny Pickett as another assistant coach with experience coaching quarterbacks in college and the NFL. But is he the right addition? With the addition of Thomas and the naming of Gerald Alexander as an assistant defensive backs coach, the Steelers seem to be changing their philosophy on keeping a small coaching staff. Could this be a sign of improvement for Mike Tomlin's staff? Also, a listener calls into the show to ask if the Steelers have a problem with players making a second year jump, and if Kenny Pickett and George Pickens can make a big second year jump to improve the offense.CALL INTO THE SHOW AT 412-223-6644 or if international, e-mail your audio message to LOSTEELERSTOPICBAG@GMAIL.COMFollow Chris Carter on Twitter: @CarterCritiques.Theme music is 'Soul Kick' by Ceddy P, and 'Too Easy' by Nerdboy. Do we think about what our young curlers eat, even if it's what we feed them for snack after practice? In this episode, I speak with Melissa Kazan, a registered dietitian (RD) and sport nutritionist in Richmond Hill, ON. We have a wide-ranging conversation that includes why we shouldn't label foods as "healthy" and "unhealthy," what we should feed our kids before and after practice, and the importance of variety, tradition and taking pleasure in the food we eat. I also reveal my own nutritional "Achilles heel" as a Little Rocks coach (while getting some advice to solve it!) Some of the topics we discuss include:* Why it's important to know the nutritional needs of kids (2:37)* Young athletes should be well-fuelled for practice (7:59)* The "pee test" - How to know if you're well-hydrated or not (13:43)* "All foods fit" - Don't label food good or bad (19:35)* What to look for in a post-practice snack (21:40)* Nutritional advice to new bonspiellers (28:01)* What to consider for a bonspiel lunch menu (30:40) and why you should offer snacks as well as the meal (33:04)* Should I feel conflicted if I use candy/chocolate as holiday treats or on-ice prizes? (36:14)* Why we should trust kids to regulate themselves, even around a bag of Halloween candy (39:10)* What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)? (41:10) and what is a "Nutritionist"? (43:38)* Coach Glenn admits his nutritional "Achilles Heel" and what can he do about it (46:54)* Take time to eat! Six-time National Coach of the Year Glenn Caruso is the head football coach at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and says that in order for one to perform at a high level, they must have the ability to recalculate…and do so quickly. Since his hiring in 2008 at St. Thomas, the Tommies have won 126 football games and have made two trips to the Division III National Championship game. According to the St. Thomas athletics website, “Caruso accomplished something unheard of in college football coaching: He improved his won-loss record in each of his first seven seasons as a head coach. He inherited a Macalester program that was 0-9 the previous fall and guided the Scots to records of 2-7 then 4-5. He took over a St. Thomas program coming off a 2-8 season and has posted records of 7-3, 11-2, 12-1, 13-1 and 14-1 in his first five seasons.” In 2021, the St. Thomas football team will compete at the Division 1 level, a tall task that only coaches like Glenn Caruso would be ready, willing, and able to handle. Buckle your chin strap for this powerful conversation with a high-performing leader and coach who chooses to talk more about the good stuff off the field – family, daily actions, and eliminating apathy – more than he chooses to talk about his success on the field.
