In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Hilary Rantisi speaks with Gina Romero, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, about the many human rights - including freedom of expression, assembly, association, and the right to education - that have been both invoked and repressed as part of the protests against Israel's war in Gaza on college campuses in many countries and the reactions to them. Gina Romero authored a comprehensive report that covers these protests, human rights, and campus repression, and includes recommendations for the protection of students, rights, and democracy itself. The report is entitled:"Recommendations for universities worldwide for the second semester of 2024: Safeguarding the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association on campuses in the context of international solidarity with the Palestinian people and victims." Silencing Civil Society through Stigmatizing Narratives: A Conversation with Gina Romero

The growing trend of “foreign agents" laws have targeted prodemocratic civil society groups and activists around the world. As a result, hostile narratives are established that stigmatize these groups, impeding the inherent rights of freedom to assembly, expression, and speech. These narratives often lead to “foreign agents” laws by authoritarian regimes, ultimately stifling the many benefits that civic groups bring to societies. Gina Romero, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, sits down with NED Vice President for Studies and Analysis Christopher Walker to discuss stigmatizing narratives that target civil society and activists, their impact, and how civic groups can respond. In this conversation, Ms. Romero highlights the key findings of her recent report on protecting the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association from stigmatization. For further insights on “foreign influence laws”, watch Ms. Romero's short video on the rights to peaceful assembly and association and read the Forum's resources on Foreign Agents Laws. You can find additional resources on the Countering Authoritarian Influence research hub and join the conversation with us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and X.

Freedom of peaceful assembly, sometimes used interchangeably with the freedom of association, is the individual right or ability of people to come together and collectively express, promote, pursue, and defend their collective or shared ideas. The right to freedom of association is recognized as a human right, a political right and a civil liberty. The terms freedom of assembly and freedom of association may be used to distinguish between the freedom to assemble in public places and the freedom to join an association. Freedom of assembly is often used in the context of the right to protest, while freedom of association is used in the context of labor rights and in the Constitution of the United States is interpreted to mean both the freedom to assemble and the freedom to join an association. In the United States the right to petition is enumerated in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which specifically prohibits Congress from abridging "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances". Although often overlooked in favor of other more famous freedoms, and sometimes taken for granted, many other civil liberties are enforceable against the government only by exercising this basic right. According to the Congressional Research Service, since the Constitution was written, the right of petition has expanded. It is no longer confined to demands for “a redress of grievances,” in any accurate meaning of these words, but comprehends demands for an exercise by the government of its powers in furtherance of the interest and prosperity of the petitioners and of their views on politically contentious matters. The right extends to the "approach of citizens or groups of them to administrative agencies (which are both creatures of the legislature, and arms of the executive) and to courts, the third branch of Government. Certainly the right to petition extends to all departments of the Government. The right of access to the courts is indeed but one aspect of the right of petition."

The Left has no interest in creating TRUST in our American Institutions. It serves their purposes to continue to trash everything about the United States because their goal is to destroy all — yes, ALL — of those institutions and systems of governance. It is important to the Left for Americans to not trust the Supreme Court or the election system, for example. They need us all to just give up! If we believe the systems work, then maybe we don’t have to burn down everything!Changing the meaning of words and how they are "allowed" to be used is part of the liberal-communist takeover plan. So, is there a connection to this with Joe and Hunter Biden's China money? Even though we always refer to the region of where viruses originate, Biden now had banned any government official from using the terms “China Virus” or “Wuhan Virus”. But the changing of definitions isn’t unique to Biden. Even the A/P is doing it, all to be “politically correct”.Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, believe the Media is why Americans are so divided today. They site CNN’s Chris Cuomo as an example. He went on an astounding rant about how the police will finally be “forced to change” when white people start being killed by cops…totally ignoring the factual reality that law enforcement do not shoot to kill because of race, but rather because of behavior. Until the Public Media start reporting factual truth, and nothing else, the Media really will be the enemy of the American People. There is a reason members of the far, extreme, anti-American Left are NEVER happy. They so hate this Country that their absolute ambition is to destroy it. So….if at any time, the majority of Americans are convinced our National Governmental Systems are working properly, then they lose their “justification” to burn the place down! You are what you think about and you are what you continually do, so consider your choices between “conflict” and “service”. Stephen Parr and Louis Avallone explain.BLM (Black Lives Matter) is Marist-Communist. To understand what is really going on with BLM, you must understand the conflict between “the oppressor” and “the oppressed” as expressed by Karl Marx…..a fight for limited resources between those with power and those without power. Thus, in order to force America into Communism [the goal of BLM], we first must be forced into “oppressed groups”. BLM justifies looting and destruction because they see themselves as being oppressed.Zig Ziglar has a very different approach. He said you can have whatever it is you want if you help enough other people have whatever it is they want. Karl Marx was all about conflict. Zig Ziglar was all about service. It is the heart of Capitalism…..and in America, that means “servant leadership”.Florida passed and Gov. Ron DeSantis just signed a new Anti-Rioting Bill, and every other state needs to do so as soon as possible. The law prevents actions which would “defund the police”. Protests cannot block roadways without a specific permit to do so. No person will be prosecuted for driving through such an illegally blocked roadway, even if it causes bodily harm or death. No government official can interfere with law enforcement protecting property during a riot, or the city will be responsible for paying for all damages, including property, personal injury or wrongful death…meaning “no stand down orders”. Rioting and related looting conduct are now felonies, and no bail is available until after the first court appearance. Injury to law enforcement personnel is a minimum 6 months in prison. Damaging historical monuments, including statues, is now a felony.A new crime is also included: “cyber intimidation”. All the doxing the left has been doing is now a felony in Florida. And suddenly the Democrats discover the 1st Amendment! They are claiming this Anti-Rioting law will “stifle free speech”, saying it is a “very dangerous piece of legislation”. Really? Peaceful Assembly is not throwing bricks at police and otherwise harming people who have a different opinion. It also is not breaking into businesses to rob, steal, and burn. It is not damaging buildings and statues, and it is not obstructing traffic.

In the United States we have this thing called the Constitution. The Constitution has in it a thing called the Bill of Rights, which consists of the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression and the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. It reads as follows: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." On June 1, shortly before 10 p.m. as people were in front of the White House protesting the police killing of George Floyd, as the First Amendment guarantees their right to do, a Black Hawk military helicopter "swept low over protesters in Chinatown and held its position, producing gusts that snapped thick tree limbs and swirled the air with volleys of dust and broken glass, sending many running for cover in panic and confusion," the Washington Post reported Tuesday, citing "flight-tracking data, images and videos" in its investigation. How concerned should we be?There's a great story in The Grayzone entitled "Israel leverages dubious ‘Nuclear Archives' to re-enlist IAEA in campaign against Iran," wherein Gareth Porter writes, "The International Atomic Energy Agency has once again lent itself to the political interests of the United States and Israel, provoking a needless conflict with Iran." But how so?According to a recent piece in AlterNet by Cody Fenwick, "Peter Navarro, one of the top White House officials overseeing trade policy, said on Monday that the elusive deal with China that has so transfixed President Donald Trump has finally collapsed. He also pushed a warped and inflammatory version of the history of the coronavirus, attributing a malevolent intent behind the pandemic that is in no way supported by the evidence." Meanwhile, a Monday story from Reuters said, "White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Monday walked back on his earlier remarks that the US-China trade pact was 'over,' stoking volatility in markets already frazzled by the coronavirus pandemic." So, what's going on here?GUESTS:Patricia Gorky — Technology and security analyst.Gareth Porter — American historian, investigative journalist, author and policy analyst specializing in US national security issues.Dr. Jack Rasmus — Teaches economics and politics at St. Mary's College in California and is the author of the book "The Scourge of Neoliberalism: US Economic Policy from Reagan to Trump."

UConn Journalism senior Adam Hushin dissects one of the key rights afforded by the First Amendment—freedom of peaceful assembly. In particular, he sought out the recipe for a successful protest or rally. Is it how many people attend? Is it media coverage? Hushin interviewed representatives from UConn PIRG, the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, the Women's March, the Connecticut chapter of the ACLU, and an editor from The New Britain Herald to find out how the success of a protest is measured.
