If your structure is perfect on paper, but your story still falls flat, this might be what you're missing.Have you ever structured a story with all the right pieces, but something still feels flat? You check all the boxes on paper:✅ Inciting incident✅ Progressive complications✅ Turning point✅ Crisis✅ Climax✅ ResolutionAnd yet it still falls flat. They mostly align, probably, you're pretty sure. But somehow, they're not working together the way they should. The turning point doesn't pack the right punch. The crisis doesn't feel devastating enough, even though all is technically lost. The climax doesn't feel like a cathartic payoff, but a gentle womp-womp.All the pieces are there. So what went wrong? Here's the thing: in order for the six elements of story to work, you have to understand your character's goal. Most writers have a vague sense of what their protagonist generally wants. But that's not enough. You need to know specifically the thing that they want—and the thing they don't want.So in this episode, I'm putting the goal under the microscope. You'll learn:Why it's not enough to know what your character wantsA super-simple framework for a character's goal (seriously, it's ridiculously easy)How that framework summarizes the meaning of the entire storyAnd how the goal glues all six elements of story together, driving the entire story from inciting incident to resolutionWithout a clearly defined goal, all the structure in the world won't make your story come alive. With it, everything else falls neatly into place.Dig deeper with these related episodes:Inciting incident (qualities & traps)Progressive complications (qualities)Progressive complications (traps)Content genresSend me a Text Message!Support the showRate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts "I love Alice and Your Next Draft." Translation and the Borders of Contemporary Japanese Literature: Inciting Difference (Routledge, 2024) examines contemporary debates on such concepts as national literature, world literature, and the relationship each of these to translation, from the perspective of modern Japanese fiction. By reading between the gaps and revealing tensions and blind spots in the image that Japanese literature presents to the world, the author brings together a series of essays and works of fiction that are normally kept separate in distinct subgenres, such as Okinawan literature, zainichi literature written by ethnic Koreans, and other "trans-border" works. The act of translation is reimagined in figurative, expanded, and even disruptive ways with a focus on marginal spaces and trans-border movements. The result decentres the common image of Japanese literature while creating connections to wider questions of multilingualism, decolonisation, historical revisionism, and trauma that are so central to contemporary literary studies. This book will be of interest to all those who study modern Japan and Japanese literature, as well as those working in the wider field of translation studies, as it subjects the concept of world literature to searching analysis. It’s hard to keep up with what’s happening in Los Angeles. And why. On Saturday, federal agents were jumping out of an unmarked van near a Home Depot parking lot and began grabbing people. Then we heard that Donald Trump had called in the National Guard. And then the Marines. And then, yesterday afternoon, Californian governor Gavin Newsom delivered a rebuke to Donald Trump in a nationwide address, saying: “What we’re witnessing is not law enforcement - it’s authoritarianism.” Today, international and political editor Peter Hartcher, on why we are witnessing the opening scenes of a new phase in American history.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The show opens with the third incident since the beginning of June of CCP affiliated students trying to smuggle biological pathogens into our country that could kill wheat, corn and rice. Why are we still allowing these bad actors to have students visas? When Joe Biden had a functioning brain, he was against sanctuary cities and wanted to fully fund Federal agencies who were supposed to be going after illegals. Now, the Left is using taxpayer funds to fuel the anti-ICE riots. These groups are literal communist organizations. Turns out Mexico and it's president are pushing Mexicans in our country to resist the Trump agenda. Isn't that the very basis of an enemy invasion? At the same time, while Mayor Karen Bass is saying the “chaos” is the fault of D.C., Rep. “Mad” Maxine Waters (D-CA) says there has been no violence. Former CIA Director Brennan wonders if someone will enact a coup against the Trump White House? CNN wonders if the Insurrection Act would be used and one of their guests shocked them by saying to very well could and should be used if local resources are overwhelmed. Trump reminds the press corps that there will be a lot more ICE raids across the nation and they will be protected from bought-and-paid-for rioters. And, for what it's worth, the polling is all in favor of the GOP. In what I'm sure the Democrats will miss on terribly irony, the leader of Al-Qaeda is calling for a Jihad on the President, the VP and the cabinet as well as others in the America First movement. I wonder if they like being on the same side as Al-Qaeda? Finally, on a more positive note, it seems Simone Biles has made an attempt to apologize to Riley Gaines. It seems odd that a female athlete who was sexually abused by a man, would be in so much favor of men invading women's sports. This week's show kicks off with United States Senator for Georgia Raphael Warnock at the Democratic National Convention, essentially reassuring white men no one is coming for their jobs–except the union-busting oligarch-backed Republicans they tend to vote for. With recent polling trends and the resurgence of unions, could the "dying of whiteness" era finally be on its way out? CNN reports that white working-class voters without a college degree in the Midwest are shifting their support from Donald Trump to Kamala Harris. Even in Nebraska's swing 2nd District—in a heavily Republican state—Harris beats Trump. To dig deeper, we're joined by expert white man Ross Morales-Rocketto, the lead organizer of White Dudes for Harris. Through one Zoom call, Ross and his team raised $4.5 million for the Harris-Walz Campaign, engaging 200,000 participants across all 50 states. But this isn't just a fleeting moment; it's a movement. Ross is on a mission to challenge the toxic masculinity perpetuated by figures like Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate, promoting a new masculinity defined by empathy and community. He's also the co-founder and co-executive director of Run for Something, which helped elect over 1,000 young people, ushering in a new generation of progressive leaders. We'll also hear from Terrell Starr of the Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack, who will provide crucial insights on dismantling toxic masculinity from a Black queer perspective. It's scorching hot. You've been walking for days, and then someone has a little water bottle. How much would you pay for that? You'd probably empty your entire bank account. Opposed to, if you're just walking on the street, you're not thirsty, you're fine. It's like, you probably won't even buy it. The only difference is the context of the pain you're in. So something is showing, ‘Hey, like, I can solve this pain point for you,' then it's gonna be more relevant to the person.” — Dakota Robertson [00:08:30 → 00:09:02]Creating and Sharing Personal Content: “I find a lot of people in business, they're so focused on, you know, giving value and actionable stuff, and they totally neglect the personal side of things. So I think there should be more of a focus on personal stories, worldviews, and opinions, even if it's polarizing, because that's the stuff that's gonna make people love you, even if it means other people hate you.” — Dakota Robertson [00:24:44 → 00:25:06]Impact of Long-Form Content on Conversion: “If someone consumes a three-second tweet, it's like, okay, but if someone consumes a ten-minute YouTube video, you're taking up more real estate in their mind, and you're nurturing that relationship way more because they can see and hear you. And that's the stuff that converts way better, is long form. So I'm always thinking about how can I convert my short-form content to long-form and ideally get them on my newsletter so they can have a direct line of access?" — Dakota Robertson [00:32:01 → 00:32:29]Show notes powered by Castmagic---Have any questions about the show or topics you'd like us to explore further?Shoot us a DM; we'd love to hear from you.Want the weekly TL;DR of tips delivered to your mailbox?Check out our newsletter here.Follow us for content, clips, giveaways, & updates!Castmagic InstagramCastmagic TwitterCastmagic LinkedIn ---Blaine Bolus - Co-Founder of CastmagicRamon Berrios - Co-Founder of CastmagicDakota Robertson - Founder of Growth Ghost

He describes the politicalization of the organization and the West's refusal to follow international law. “If you have a message coming from the United States and their western allies that says these rules do not apply to us or to our western friends, or in short-hand, they do not apply to white people, but they do apply to the rest of the world, that is maybe the last nail in the coffin of these international laws.” “The security council belongs in a Cold War museum,” he says. “It is an entity that empowers five permanent members with a veto that is usually used to prevent any action to the benefit of normal human beings. The US in this case used its veto to prevent ceasefire, and after each veto, thousands of more Palestinians are being massacred in Gaza. It's an act of complicity.” So when Israel commits war crimes that are empowered by the US, it is no longer only their crime: “Just to put it simply, this assault on Gaza is being perpetrated by Israel and the United States. The US is a party to this.” And given that Biden has repeatedly claimed that he saw photos of beheaded babies (even after his staff urged him not to and the White House walked it back), we asked Craig: Can the argument be made that Joe Biden is inciting genocide? His response: “Absolutely.” Subscribe to watch the full interview with Craig Mokhiber on the fear used to silence UN officials, and Israel's allegations of rape on October 7. 00:00 Intro 00:43 The Four Food Groups of News 11:45 Craig Mokhiber interview 12:15 Resigning from the UN 20:43 What should the UN do? 30:38 UN staffers protest 34:20 Is it genocide? 46:49 Why is Biden lying?
