America's Political Prisoner Mahmoud Khalil—Columbia student, green card holder, and husband to a U.S. citizen—has been detained for nearly three months without being charged with a single crime. His “crime”? Leading peaceful pro-Palestinian protests and refusing to cover his face. While his wife Noor Abdallah gave birth to their son alone, Mahmoud sat in ICE detention in Louisiana.Hawk discusses the heartbreaking and outrageous story of Khalil's arrest, the shadowy role of Canary Mission, and the disturbing involvement of officials like Marco Rubio and Columbia professor Shai Davidai. He explores how dissent is being criminalized in real time under the Trump administration—and how Canary Mission's blacklisting of activists is being used to feed arrests.Hawk highlights the courageous voice of Mahmoud's wife Noor Abdallah, legal updates on Mahmoud's case, and the broader implications for First Amendment rights, academic freedom, and the silencing of Palestinian solidarity. This is a story of political imprisonment, media complicity, and systemic injustice. It's also a story of resilience, love, and the quiet strength of a family fighting back. Kaweh Kerami is a political scientist whose work bridges politics, (digital) media and human rights. He earned his PhD in Development Studies from SOAS University of London, where he investigated how power dynamics and competing interests shape political competition and cooperation in post-intervention Afghanistan (2001–2021). Drawing on comparative and narrative analyses, supported by extensive primary data and elite interviews, his research offers nuanced insights into political bargaining and (in)stability in conflict-affected contexts. As a Research Fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI), Kaweh examines how journalists use digital technologies to document human rights violations, focusing on challenges such as verification, security, and legal admissibility. His work also addresses the role of misinformation, including AI-driven disinformation, in shaping political discourse and media landscapes. Through these investigations, he aims to support international accountability efforts by developing secure, credible documentation methods and strengthening pathways for peace and justice. Kaweh taught at the American University in Kabul (2019–2021) and currently serves as a Master's thesis supervisor at SOAS University of London. He has worked as a journalist for the BBC World Service, covering politics, war, and women's rights, and most recently served as a specialist researcher for BBC Media Action on a U.S.-funded project examining media under Taliban rule. In his free time, he enjoys iPhone photography, capturing moments of beauty and reflection.

Monica, at the taxpayer's expense has been forced into jail eleven times.  Within the eleven times, she was jailed in Morris County New Jersey from November to December 2024, and from January to the end of March and released in 2025.      Monica shared her experiences while jailed and how she came to be jailed. She also talked about working on "Lila's Law," and what that will entail. Monica has also been investigated 35 times since 2018, at taxpayer expense with no findings. Monica has passed all screenings. She has never failed any of this.    This week, Monica will be in court. On the latest charges that baffle Monica, as she doesn't know what the legal standard is, is how is it possible for a lawyer or a social worker to determine that a doctor's medical diagnosis is invalid, but that is what this charge is based on. Monica has gotten five months time served, and the prosecutor will be arguing for five years on probation. This will then put Monica at risk non-stop. Even if they can get any charge on her even if false it's a violation of probation.     In regards to the family courts, Monica advises parents to "Brace themselves.      Slam the Gavel welcomes John Scott from Florida to the podcast. John is the victim of multiple DCF Civil Rights Violations by a caseworker that has since left DCF. It all started November 6th, 2023. The caseworker, B. Bachelor, was rude, made malicious insinuations and wanted John to go into detail about DV that was done to him by his ex while in front of the children. This caseworker criminally conspired with multiple members of the Okaloosa County, FL Sheriff's Department to have him arrested for allegedly being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. However, there was a paperwork issue.... Where is the accountability??     John discussed his story and has a 2023 arrest case sealed by a Federal Judge and a 2022 Civil Rights Violation case sealed as well. John has court on April 7th, 2025 and has reached out to 200 law firms and found one that deals with DCF cases. In this episode, we explore Roger's journey from his roots in China to his upbringing in Canada, and how his disillusionment with the traditional financial system inspired him to advocate for Bitcoin as a tool for freedom and decentralization. Roger shares powerful stories about the Chinese surveillance state, the role of inflation in shaping politics, and the growing global influence of China's economic strategies, including the Belt and Road Initiative and CBDC development. ► If you got value, please like, comment, share, follow and support my work.      Slam the Gavel welcomes Gina Dobson to the podcast. Gina Dobson is an actor, a writer and a producer. It wasn't until her two children reached adulthood that she also revealed herself as a wrongly accused felon.     In 1998, carrying only her one year-old son and a piggy bank of change, Gina fled to another state from years of life-threatening abuse. Two weeks later after her escape, Gina was arrested for murder.     Her ex-boyfriend had filed a false report, claiming that the miscarriage Gina had FIVE YEARS EARLIER was actually murder.      Gina spent months behind bars suffering HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS for the sake of protecting her child. This financially and emotionally drained her very supportive family members. In the end, Gina accepted a plea bargain for a lesser felony charge that would guarantee her freedom.      After years of feeling broken by the abuse and the criminal record of "Concealment of Homicide without a Body," Gina now spreads the message of female empowerment and joyful healing through interviews and PSA's that increase awareness domestic violence and promote supportive resources for victims. We also discussed the "Alford Plea" (North Carolina v. Alford, 1970), also called a Kennedy plea.     In the film industry, she seeks out unconventional female roles that go agains the patriarchal norm. Gina also co-founded "BAB on 3" which can be found on YouTube. It is a female-driven film production company that embraces authenticity, encourages under-represented people in filmmaking, and delivers the message that women need support from other women. To Reach Gina Dobson:  https://ginadobson.com/******** Supportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/  YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536  Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryann*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. Shein and Temu-Xinjiang ControversiesIntroduction Welcome to today's podcast, where we dive into the controversies surrounding Shein and Temu, two major players in the online retail world. We'll explore their business practices, links to forced labor in Xinjiang, and the broader implications for consumers and global trade.Temu: A New Player in Online ShoppingLaunch and Ownership: Temu, launched in 2022 by PDD Holdings Inc., is an offshoot of the Chinese company Pinduoduo. It's known for its "buy it now" model and extremely low prices.Business Model: Temu, like Amazon, acts as a middleman between factories and consumers, but it's been accused of unethical practices like stealing photos and certifications from Amazon. Despite its popularity, Temu reportedly loses an average of $30 per order to attract and retain customers.Controversies: Influencers heavily promote Temu, but critics warn against its poor quality products and potential privacy risks, including allegations of embedded spyware in the app.Shein: Fast Fashion Giant Under ScrutinyOverview: Shein, a Chinese fast-fashion retailer, has made significant inroads in the U.S. market, mirroring Temu's success but with a different business model. Shein purchases clothes from factories and sells them under its brand, similar to retailers like Forever 21.IPO and Legal Issues: Shein has confidentially filed for an IPO in the U.S., though concerns about its labor practices, environmental impact, and sourcing from Xinjiang have delayed this process.Uyghur Forced Labor AllegationsBackground: The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), championed by Senator Marco Rubio, became law in 2021. It mandates the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to block imports made with Uyghur forced labor.Shipping Loophole: Shein and Temu exploit the "de minimis exception," which waives duty fees for packages under $800, allowing them to maintain low prices. In 2022, over 30% of sub-$800 packages entering the U.S. were from Shein and Temu, who paid no duty fees, unlike other retailers such as H&M.Human Rights Concerns in XinjiangForced Labor: Xinjiang's cotton industry has been accused of using forced labor, especially involving Uyghur Muslims. Reports suggest over a million Uyghurs have been detained in "reeducation camps" since 2017, facing intense surveillance, forced labor, and human rights abuses.International Response: In 2021, the U.S. labeled China's actions against Uyghurs as genocide, and the United Nations cited serious human rights violations.Impact on U.S. Market and Consumer AwarenessMarket Influence: Temu and Shein's aggressive market strategies, including Super Bowl ads and massive promotions, highlight their influence. Despite legal and ethical concerns, their popularity grows.Consumer Responsibility: As consumers, it's crucial to consider where our money goes and the ethical implications of our purchases. The allure of low prices often masks serious ethical and legal issues. Conclusion Today's discussion underscores the complex interplay between global commerce, ethics, and consumer behavior. As Shein and Temu continue to expand, it's essential to stay informed about the broader impacts of our shopping choices on human rights and global trade. Mr. Jerry Anderson, a VETERAN, was only seeking help for his daughter with mental health issues in 2016.      He called on DSS for help and that's when the destruction of his family began, including the removal of his granddaughter who was quickly adopted out. Through the family court process, Judge Christy Wilhelm and DSS, took his daughter's daughter away from her which caused her to rapidly decline. She passed in 2017. Mr. Anderson wants answers.     Recently in March, Mr. Anderson was court watching on a case with Judge N. Knust with Attorney Jay White present in the courtroom. They announced they were going into recess and were going to close the courtroom. Mr. Anderson spoke out asking, why the court watchers can't come in. The court looked irritated. Also, Mr. Anderson saw a caseworker that was on his daughter's case and called her a liar. Attorney Jay White  spoke with Judge Knust and decided to put Mr. Anderson, age 70,  in handcuffs. He explained to the judge that he got emotional and apologized. Judge Knust held him in contempt for FOUR DAYS in the Cabarrus County Jail, which is underground, and Mr. Anderson suffered Human Rights Violations at that time. He didn't eat for four days due to questionable food and on the last day they kept the lights onand put the air-conditioning on him. Mr. Anderson, 70 years old and a VETERAN, froze on his last night in prison.      There was no compassion in this courtroom. To reach Mr. Jerry Anderson:  anderson.jerry91@yahoo.comThis episode of Slam the Gavel is sponsored by CPSprotect Consulting Services. April is Genocide Awareness month. Two of the worst genocides in history, the Hutu killing of Tutsis in Rwanda and the Ottoman genocide against Armenians, began in April. We explore genocide with two specific questions: Who internationally makes a determination that violence and atrocities are in fact genocide? And what if anything changes when there … Continue reading Scholars' Circle – Determining genocide and other human rights violations of the law ; Dark side of democracy – April 21, 2024 →

‘It's a lose-lose situation': Carbon ‘offset' project in Cambodia accused of human rights violations

On a recent day in the Cardamom Mountains of southwest Cambodia, a local resident steered a boat along a calm waterway, pointing out plants grown by community members: durian, banana, jackfruit, avocado. This area has seen increased patrolling by the Cambodian military, environmental officials and staff of the New York-based nonprofit Wildlife Alliance, according to the man, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution. “All of this farmland belongs to people. Starting from the border of the forest, that's where people have enjoyed farming every year for a long time,” he said. “We've done farming here for many years already before they came to do conservation.” Cambodia's monsoonal wet season drenches Toap Khley village in the Southern Cardamom National Park's Areng Valley. Credit: Anton L. Delgado/Southeast Asia Globe The small farms dotting the riverbank are part of a protected area that is now being enforced through a forest carbon offset project known as the Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project. A new report from Human Rights Watch found that the project had violated the rights of Indigenous Chong people who live here, documenting forced evictions, arrests and harassment. The project brought in more than $18 million by 2021 through carbon credit sales. Companies including Delta Air Lines, Stella McCartney, McKinsey and Boeing bought the credits in an attempt to reduce their overall carbon footprint, in this case, by supporting a project that patrols a conservation area to prevent deforestation. The industry has faced a slew of critical coverage in the last few years, with accusations that projects have overstated their climate benefits. The research from Human Rights Watch indicates that these projects can also harm local and Indigenous groups in the name of conservation.  A sign in Chamnar village, the furthest community in Areng Valley, indicates that a new water tower was supported by the Southern Cardamom REDD+ project within the national park. Credit: Anton L. Delgado/Southeast Asia Globe Empty boats line one side of the riverbank, as the Chong Indigenous fishers and farmers are restricted from crossing over to cultivate their crops, the resident explained. The local people support conservation of forested areas, he said, but want to continue cultivating crops in areas that have long been agricultural plots. Instead, members of his community have been arrested for collecting sustainable forest products, had their crops destroyed and huts burned down, according to the report.“People are farming on land that they have customarily thought belongs to them but the interpretation of the project is that this farming amounts to an environmental crime,” said Luciana Téllez Chávez, senior researcher at Human Rights Watch and the lead author of the report. “Some people have also been jailed for basically just performing the activities that have formed the core of their livelihoods for generations.”Luciana Téllez Chávez, senior researcher, Human Rights Watch“Some people have also been jailed for basically just performing the activities that have formed the core of their livelihoods for generations.” A bathroom, supported by the Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project within the national park, is visible from the rain-drenched gate of a home in Samraong village. Credit: Anton L. Delgado/Southeast Asia Globe This carbon offset project was able to sell credits at higher prices because it received additional certifications reserved for projects that specifically benefit local and Indigenous communities. But Human Rights Watch found that the process of obtaining "free, prior and informed consent" from residents did not begin until 2 and 1/2 years after the project had already started. “I cannot imagine a more egregious problem than reversing free, prior and informed consent. If you say that happened and the opposite happened, why should I trust anything you say anywhere else?” said Danny Cullenward, a climate economist and lawyer. For Cullenward, the report findings are made even worse by the fact that some of the issues were documented in the project's own audits years before the investigation. The auditing firm SCS Global Services, for instance, noted that the free, prior and informed consent meetings with residents began 31 months after the January 2015 project start date, but still determined that the project was “in conformance” with certification requirements. “Every single party in this transaction has a financial interest in there being more credits issued,” Cullenward said. “It's a lose-lose situation here because, either one of the parties has really screwed up at its job or the rules are so weak, you really don't want to have any confidence in their application elsewhere.”The credits are certified by the US nonprofit Verra, the world's leading carbon credit certifier, which is meant to confirm that the projects produce certain environmental and social benefits. Verra began its own investigation of the project after Human Rights Watch shared its preliminary findings in June. Joel Finkelstein, Verra's senior director for media and advocacy, told The World that the allegations are appalling. He believes Verra's auditing system is something the organization can really stand behind.“It's a system designed to get to meaningful, credible, high-integrity climate impact and ethical processes in these projects,” he said. “If that was not the case here, our investigation will find that out and there will be censures for that, too.”Verra would not provide a timeline for when its investigation will be completed, and said its policy is to not provide commentary while an investigation is ongoing. SCS Global Services said in an email that its policy was to not comment on ongoing reviews. Cambodia's Environment Ministry did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Wildlife Alliance said in a statement that the Human Rights Watch report “fundamentally distorts the reality of the project.” A local resident walks down the red road to Chamnar Village in the Areng Valley of the Southern Cardamom National Park. Credit: Anton L. Delgado/Southeast Asia Globe At his family home, a Chong Indigenous man in his late 50s said the rangers and officials carrying out the carbon offset project have cut down crops grown by his community. "They should be protecting only the forest, not [patrolling] the plantations and trees that people have planted for years,” the man said, who also asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation from the Wildlife Alliance. He still farms in the area despite the patrols, but is afraid of being spotted. He doesn't earn enough for his family's daily living expenses, and had to take out private loans for $150."I only ask the companies that gave to [Wildlife Alliance] and the REDD+ Project to review the map that overlaps with people's land,” he said. “Do not hurt the people anymore."The authorities don't go after people who have excavators, he said, but they come for people with small farms like him. Additional reporting and translation by Phon Sothyroth.

North Korean propaganda websites targeting South Korea suddenly started to disappear from the internet last week, after leader Kim Jong Un declared in late December that Korean unification is now “impossible.” Some radio broadcasts into the ROK have also stopped, while the DPRK announced on Tuesday that it is shutting down several organizations dealing with inter-Korean matters. NK News Correspondent Shreyas Reddy (@shreyas_k_reddy) sits down in the studio to discuss what outlets have disappeared, North Korea's social media strategy and how this apparent blackout could evolve. Then, James Heenan, the head of the U.N. Human Rights office in Seoul (@UNrightsSeoul), talks about his role in monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation in North Korea, as well as his office's role in collecting evidence that could one day be used for prosecutions of crimes against humanity in the DPRK. He also reviews a U.N. report published last year titled “These Wounds Do Not Heal,” which details enforced disappearance and abductions by the DPRK. He discusses enforced disappearances of both North Koreans and of foreigners, as well as the history behind the DPRK's abductions of Japanese nationals.  James Heenan previously served as the head of the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Palestine from 2015. He has also worked in academia on labor rights issues and as a practicing lawyer in the U.K. and Australia.  About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot (@JaccoZed) exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists.

You wouldn't know it from watching the news today, but at least 10 Palestinians were slaughtered by Israel today - including women, children, and senior citizens. They were shot, bombed, and run over by armored cars. I've seen the videos and photos for myself. It's atrocious. It's despicable. And we have to push back. The leading human rights organizations in the world call what Israel is doing to Palestinians "Apartheid," but I've grown to think that's not even strong enough. These are war crimes. And more. 2023 is on pace to be the deadliest year ever measured for Palestinians. And don't believe the lies that Israel is just killing "terrorists." They use that blanket excuse to describe everything they do to shut down the truth. They've killed at least 12 children. Almost everybody that was killed has been unarmed. And they are doing it without even a hint of accountability. Let me try to unpack and explain it.
