Colleen Gwynne was the chief investigator of one of Australia's most-publicised murders - that of Peter Falconio, who was killed by Bradley John Murdoch in 2001. Falconio's girlfriend Joanne Lees managed to escape, and Colleen saw how wrong the cops got it, when it came to how Joanne's story was told to the world. Colleen shares why she wanted to join the police, how her mother instilled values of respect and fairness and empathy in her and her siblings, and the darkest days of her life when she was wrongly accused of a crime. Colleen now lives in rural Victoria. She finds it hard to wind down, even though she's no longer working in the social justice space. Her desire to make life better for kids who haven't had the best start in life, still drives her today.

(5:38) - Wade Wilson Supporters (10:24) - Peter Falconio In 2001, British tourists Peter Falconio and his girlfriend Joanne Lees were part way through the trip of a lifetime around the world. They arrived in Australia early that that year. By June 2001, they were ready to embark on the ultimate road trip around the country. One cold night in June 2001, the couple were driving through the remote Australian outback. A passing motorist named Bradley John Murdoch motioned to the couple to stop their vehicle, and they did. Peter got out of the car and what happened next is the stuff of nightmares. Joanne heard a loud bang and Peter dropped out of sight. Bradley then attempted to abduct Joanne. She managed to escape and ran into the desert where she hid for hours. Bradley searched for her and came within inches of her, multiple times. Joanne was rescued by a truck driver hours later. Bradley would be arrested and charged with Peter's death in following years. The media interest in the trial was so large that the court building had to be renovated to the cost of almost $1m. 23 years later, Peter's body has never been found. For 20 years, Henry Keogh was imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. What was a tragic accident turned into a full-blown murder trial, fueled by dubious evidence from now-discredited forensic pathologist, Dr. Colin Manouk. In this episode, host Kathryn Fox talks with Forensic Photographer, Professor Gale Spring, one of the key experts who helped overturn Keogh's conviction in 2014. Hear about the intricate complexities of interpreting images and video, the misplaced trust juries often have in CCTV footage, and the human propensity to perceive patterns where none exist. Police are renewing calls for information to help find the body of murdered backpacker Peter Falconio, on the anniversary of his disappearance. The attack on the British couple in 2001 remains one of Australia's most high-profile criminal cases in recent decades.
The Australian Medical Association has declared recruiting more GPs to the vaccination rollout and setting up drive-through jab clinics are our best chance of winning the battle against Covid-19. A court has heard how promoter Phil Rankine allegedly duped investors out of $5.5m by falsely claiming he would bring Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and Rob Thomas to Adelaide. A private school in Adelaide's north is being urged to consider paying back almost $12m in JobKeeper subsidies it pocketed in 2020, after posting a bumper operating surplus last year. And two decades on from one of Australia's most infamous Outback killings, calls are growing for Bradley Murdoch to reveal where the body of his victim Peter Falconio is. Joanne was found with her wrists tied, duct tape around her neck, and blood on her shirt. True Crime Conversations explores the world's most notorious crimes by speaking to the people who know the most about them. This month we’re focusing in on Australia’s most notorious crimes... It’s a Saturday night in the middle of July, 2001, when Peter Falconio and Joanne Lees travel down the Stuart Highway in their orange Kombi van. Peter is 28, and in the driver’s seat. His girlfriend, 27-year-old Joanne, is in the passenger seat. They’ve been in Australia for a little over five months, first arriving in Sydney on a working holiday Visa. They’d come from Brighton in England, prepared for the trip of a lifetime. On June the 25th, the young tourists departed Sydney to embark on a road trip across Australia, starting in Canberra, then on to Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin and Brisbane. The couple had been in Alice Springs, and are bound that night for the Devils Marbles, south of Tennant Creek. The road is long, and the drive notoriously remote. You rarely see another car, and the road extends as far as the eye can see, kilometres ahead. It’s eerie. If you stand on the side of the road, it’s so quiet and still you’re able to hear your own heartbeat. They had stopped at the roadhouse in Barrow Creek, but once they set off again, they start to notice something unusual. A car. They keep expecting the car to overtake them, but it doesn’t. Along the expanse of road, a Toyota 4WD with a large green canopy in the back, approaches them. The driver gestures for them to pull over. Something must be wrong. There is a twinge of fear. They’re alone. More than 15,000 kilometres from home. News had emerged recently in Australia and internationally of backpacker murders, with tourists like them disappearing in the Australian outback. They pull the car over. A man approaches them. And a few hours later, Northern Territory police get a panicked phone call. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/8podcast/support

When Peter Falconio went missing in the vast Aussie Outback , it was one of the biggest mysteries of my time. It gained attention from all over the world , as Pete's girlfriend , Joanne Lees had survived the attack , but much to everyone's frustration remained reluctant to talk about it publicly. She was quickly condemmend , reminding everyone of another woman who refused to show emotion to the press , Lindy Chamberlain. Although drug runner Bradley Murdoch was arrested and convicted of Pete's murder , it is a subject that has sparked many a debate for years. Is Joanne telling the truth about what happened that night or does she know more than we think ? Why would a seasoned drug runner kill a man on a national highwway in a supposed random attack ? This new documentry , Murder in The Outback claims there is more evidence we dont know about including 'sensational' new evidence from the truckie who picked Joanne up involving a mysterious red car. Frustratingly this doco throws up more questions than answers. Here I attempt to make sense of them ( spoiler alert - I'm still confused !) But part of his evidence in what could be considered one of WA’s most famous trials, did catch our DNA expert by surprise, in fact, Forensic DNA Expert Brendan Chapman said it could be controversial if left unchallenged. Our forensic expert breaks down the complicated DNA evidence into an easy-to-understand language on day 58 of WA’s trial of the century. As we get to the end of the DNA portion of the trial, What Tim Clarke thinks of today’s evidence, why today’s witness is so important, and what’s to come next. Vuonna 2001, osana maailmanympärysmatkaansa, pariskunta Peter Falconio ja Joanne Lees kiertävät asuntoautollaan Australiaa. Kesken matkaa tapahtui kuitenkin jotakin, eikä Peteriä ole koskaan löydetty.
In July 2001, Peter Falconio and Joanne Lees were taking a dream trip around the world. One night, in the middle of remote central Australia, the couple’s world was shattered and Peter has never been seen since. The questions of what happened on the side of Stuart Highway has been resolved in the courts but was it the right answer? Research by Jess Music by Scott Buckley basementfortproductions.com
CU in the NT, motherfuckers! Our first foray into the Top End covers the murder of Peter Falconio, a British tourist who was murdered while on holiday with his girlfriend, Joanne Lees, on a road trip from Sydney to Darwin. Bradley John Murdoch played the role of concerned fellow motorist when he signalled to Joanne and Pete to pull over, saying that sparks were coming out of the exhaust on their Kombi.Knowing that car trouble could lead to serious trouble if they were stranded on the Stuart Highway in the literal middle of nowhere in the remote Northern Territory Outback, Peter pulled over, checked the exhaust, and was then shot at point-blank range by Bradley Murdoch. Murdoch then handcuffed Joanne with homemade cuffs and pulled her into his car with the intention to do God-knows-what, but she managed to escape, hiding herself in the bush until Peter gave up and drove away.A massive (and somewhat flawed) police investigation followed. Locating the suspect took literal years, allegations of evidence contamination dogged the trial, and Joanne Lees was forced to physically demonstrate how she escaped from Murdoch before the jury before he was ultimately convicted of the crime.EPISODE NOTES:As we all know, most of Australia is essentially full of sweet fuck-all. For tourists, that’s part of the appeal – long stretches of road with nothing but blue skies and the wild Outback out the window. Joanne Lees and Peter Falconio had dreams of those blue skies when they came to Australia in 2001 on a working holiday visa. After working for a few months, they planned to drive from Sydney through to Adelaide and up to the Top End in an old orange Kombi van before heading to New Zealand and back home to the UK.Their dream Aussie holiday came to a tragic end when they happened upon Bradley John Murdoch on the Stuart Highway by Barrow Creek. The senseless murder of Peter Falconio (and Joanne Lee’s miracle escape) would make headlines across the world. The investigation into Peter’s murder would continue for years, and Joanne would fall prey to an unfriendly media who wouldn’t accept that her British stiff-upper-lip attitude after Peter’s murder was masking unmentionable pain.Bradley Murdoch, a drug runner and suspected rapist, would eventually be found guilty of Peter’s murder, but not before Joanne was found guilty in the court of public opinion. This case added to the atmosphere of fear generated by the Backpacker Murders that Australia was unsafe for tourists, and perhaps for good reason. The body of Peter Falconio has never been found. He is one of many people lost to the unforgiving Outback. You can watch the telemovie made about the case here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEMz1ACXF8g&fbclid=IwAR3ve6qxPn6GK_TLTodKQ2emccGyfJ5s69A5twjoj3DXKiLqKQ5ibg0MQloand the episode of Real Crime Stories covering the case can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28eb8c6FYEM&t=7s&fbclid=IwAR1WGsDgsETr2Kx5KnIZb-pgQoh56qSOt8x_CXagsgy1QesypWVaQ6OLA5QTo read more about the drama about the interview with Andrew Fraser, go here https://www.couriermail.com.au/ipad/channel-7-and-rahni-sadler-charged-over-bradley-john-murdoch-interview/news-story/90b3a9a4324e453fc7e161dfaadeb7fe?sv=f9980e182f0bb97134b47bcd07250b81&fbclid=IwAR1kcTLfzwPXXg7udSdKT9rtvZfy4qu7902l4YQVEvmXBDbJIuMyEm0xy04Of course, there’s always Casefile if you’d like a more scripted version of the case (this is just professional jealousy, the episode is really good) https://casefilepodcast.com/case-44-peter-falconio/If you like what we do please consider supporting us on PATREONSubscribe to the podcast on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.comwww.thatsnotcanonproductions.com

The couple had been travelling around Asia since late 2000 with the final pit stop in the Land Down Under. After trecking around Asia for months, they finally arrived in Australia on January 16, 2001. Armed with a working holiday visa, they planned to go on a road trip around the country while earning some money doing odd jobs. On July 14, the two were driving down Stuart Highway towards the Devil’s Marble when they noticed a vehicle that had been following them since the Barrow Creek roadhouse. #2 Joe Metheny At 450-pounds, Joe Metheny from Baltimore, Maryland was an imposing man. But aside from his physique, he was also someone who hid his brutal criminal activities from everyone he knew. His murderous crime spree began in 1994 when he was 39 years old. He had come home on a July evening and realized his wife was gone along with their 6-year old son. She had taken everything and left him for good. He didn’t mind her leaving, but was upset that she took their son without letting him know.

The desert roads of the Northern Territory are as long as they are desolate. If you stand still, your own heartbeat is the loudest sound you’ll hear. The thrill of the open road and the sheer expanse of the hot desert is an exciting drawcard for many, but for those used to big cities, busy beaches or in this case, the relentless rain and dark clouded skies of England, driving from Adelaide to Darwin was the thrill of a lifetime, and unlike anything they had experienced before. But it would soon turn into a nightmare… * * * Episode researched and co-written by Anna Priestland For all credits and sources please visit [**casefilepodcast.com/case-44-peter-falconio**](http://casefilepodcast.com/case-44-peter-falconio/)
