In this episode, we dive into one of Australia's most haunting outback mysteries — the disappearance of British backpacker Peter Falconio. In July 2001, Peter and his girlfriend, Joanne Lees, were traveling through the remote Northern Territory when a terrifying roadside encounter changed everything. Joanne survived to tell the tale — claiming they were ambushed by a stranger on the highway — but Peter was never seen again. As investigators pieced together the bizarre circumstances, suspicion, media frenzy, and international attention followed. It would take years before someone was brought to justice — but even then, Peter's body was never found.Intro Clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIsqFAH1YcsSkip ahead to episode: 4.10www.cluelesscrime.com.aubuymeacoffee.com/cluelesscrimepatreon.com/cluelesscrimeinstragram.com/cluelesscrimepodcast
Bradley John Murdoch was convicted of Falconio’s murder in December 2005 and sentenced to life in prison. Now, there’s been a significant development. Murdoch died of throat cancer on July 15, 2025, at the age of 67. He had been diagnosed with the terminal illness in 2019 and was released from Alice Springs Correctional Centre last month to receive palliative care at Alice Springs Hospital. Chillingly, his death came just one day after the 24th anniversary of Falconio’s murder. Despite years of investigation and repeated appeals from police, Murdoch never disclosed the location of Peter Falconio’s remains. His body has never been found. In this episode, originally published in 2021, Jessie Stephens speaks with former Detective Superintendent Colleen Gwynne — the lead investigator into Peter Falconio’s disappearance and murder, about the details of this case. This episode first aired in 2019 and marked one of the earliest major cases on True Crime Conversations. We're re-releasing it today for listeners old and new. There’s a distinct true crime spin on MMOL today. The Outback Killer Bradley Murdoch has died, and after 24 years, he’s taking his secrets to the grave with him. Plus, are we normalising meanness? With shows that scratch our hate-watch itch, Mia, Amelia and Jessie talk about why we're clocking up so much time in front of something we actively dislike. And Jeffrey Epstein’s name is back in the news and being said in the same breath as Donald Trump, missing files, and the unanswered questions that are turning us into conspiracy theorists. It’s all going on, Outlouders. You know what to do

Colleen Gwynne was the chief investigator of one of Australia's most-publicised murders - that of Peter Falconio, who was killed by Bradley John Murdoch in 2001. Falconio's girlfriend Joanne Lees managed to escape, and Colleen saw how wrong the cops got it, when it came to how Joanne's story was told to the world. Colleen shares why she wanted to join the police, how her mother instilled values of respect and fairness and empathy in her and her siblings, and the darkest days of her life when she was wrongly accused of a crime. Colleen now lives in rural Victoria. She finds it hard to wind down, even though she's no longer working in the social justice space. Her desire to make life better for kids who haven't had the best start in life, still drives her today.

(5:38) - Wade Wilson Supporters (10:24) - Peter Falconio In 2001, British tourists Peter Falconio and his girlfriend Joanne Lees were part way through the trip of a lifetime around the world. They arrived in Australia early that that year. By June 2001, they were ready to embark on the ultimate road trip around the country. One cold night in June 2001, the couple were driving through the remote Australian outback. A passing motorist named Bradley John Murdoch motioned to the couple to stop their vehicle, and they did. Peter got out of the car and what happened next is the stuff of nightmares. Joanne heard a loud bang and Peter dropped out of sight. Bradley then attempted to abduct Joanne. She managed to escape and ran into the desert where she hid for hours. Bradley searched for her and came within inches of her, multiple times. Joanne was rescued by a truck driver hours later. Bradley would be arrested and charged with Peter's death in following years. The media interest in the trial was so large that the court building had to be renovated to the cost of almost $1m. 23 years later, Peter's body has never been found. For 20 years, Henry Keogh was imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. What was a tragic accident turned into a full-blown murder trial, fueled by dubious evidence from now-discredited forensic pathologist, Dr. Colin Manouk. In this episode, host Kathryn Fox talks with Forensic Photographer, Professor Gale Spring, one of the key experts who helped overturn Keogh's conviction in 2014.
