Phantasy Star II, "Phantasy Star II: At the End of the Restoration") is a science fantasy role-playing video game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It was released in Japan in 1989, North America in 1990, and in Europe in 1990. It was later ported to a variety of different platforms. An updated remake, Phantasy Star Generation 2, was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005 in Japan. Phantasy Star II is the second installment in Sega's acclaimed Phantasy Star series and serves as a sequel to the original Phantasy Star for the Master System. Phantasy Star II takes place 1,000 years after the events of its predecessor and follows the journey of a government agent named Rolf and his friends, who are on a mission to discover why the protector of the planet Mota, Mother Brain, has started malfunctioning. Phantasy Star II was the first video game to use a 6 mega-bit cartridge, making it the biggest video game on a console at the time. Since its release Phantasy Star II has been the subject of critical acclaim.

Kusoge aficionado Heidi Kemps (Gaming.moe) joins us this week to talk about her shaky introduction to video games; a one-two punch of having too much empathy for Frogger, and the assumption that the most interesting games were "for boys only." After this belief was challenged by a bizarre Super C commercial, Heidi embarked on a lifelong journey that eventually found her in possession of the only Fighting Vipers 2 cabinet in America. Also, we talk the vagueness of Phantasy Star II, the inscrutable Presto Studios-developed Gundam FMV game, GIRLZ BUTTZ, Sega loyalty, Raimais' plethora of secrets and the general wonders of Taito, Seiken Densetsu 3, the effortless rebellion of Jet Set Radio, and how multifaceted enjoyment of the medium can make research more enjoyable than play. Phantasy Star is one of the most popular PSP games out there. On the Dreamcast too it was very popular. But before Phantasy Star went online it was just a sci-fi themed first person view RPG on the Sega Master System. Some call it the greatest RPG series of it's time. Some call it the greatest RPG series period. Whatever the case for you, Phantasy Star is something you should take a lot more seriously in the future. How many of you can remember playing any of the Phantasy Star games? Phantasy Star I: Music Composer Tokuhiko Uwabo (bo). Phantasy Star II: Music Composer Tokuhiko Uwabo (bo).
