Almost thirty years ago Sierra released Phantasmagoria which what would go on to be their most controversial game of all time. At the time Robert Williams was best known for her family friendly King's Quest games so it was quite a shock to see her make an adult horror game which included a controversial rape scene and plenty of gore. This was Sierra's most ambitious and most expensive production which caused many challenges for the cast and crew to film and produce and as a result was delayed several times before eventually being released on August 24th 1995. In this special Halloween episode Seoirse, drawing on information online, from the official Sierra Guidebook for Phantasmagoria and his own conversations with actor David Lee Homb and Roberta Williams herself, gives some background details on the origins, filming, production and release and reception of the game. He also gives some interesting facts about the filming of the game and he gives his own non spoiler and spoiler filled review of the game. And if you want more about this game then check out our Patreon for exclusive episode where Seoirse runs down the most gruesome murders in the game!So join us as we take a deep dive into one of the most talked about horror games of all time!Phantasmagoria music composed by Mark SeibertSong “Take a Stand” by Mark SeibertOfficial Phantasmagoria soundtrack at The Sierra ChestPhantasmagoria GOG SteamAdventure Games Podcast Official SiteIntro (00:00:25)Origins (00:04:58)Background & Filming (00:07:50)Release & Reception (00:19:02)Interesting Facts (00:25:48)Non-Spoiler Review (00:31:49)Spoiler Recap & Recap (00:55:41)If you would like to stay up to date make sure you subscribe to the podcast. Instagram YouTube Buy Me a Coffee

This week we go back in time 2 years ago and we spend the entire episode speaking with Professor Peter Lang of Harvard University about his rich and long career in pediatric cardiology during one of the most exciting times of the field. Dr. Lang's story includes a virtual who's who of important cardiologists and cardiac surgeons for the past 50 years including Dr. Connie Hayes, Dr. Roberta Williams, Dr. Alexander Nadas, Dr. Richard Van Praagh, Dr. Aldo Castaneda, Dr. Bill Norwood and many, many more. This is a rare opportunity to hear about the development of the Norwood procedure from someone who was at the bedside of the first 30-50 ever performed as well as someone who helped develop the entire field of cardiac critical care. Prepare to be inspired by this towering figure this week.

Find out more about supporting Eurogmer here: https://www.eurogamer.net/subscribe I was hoping they'd be on their boat while conducting the interview and they were! Bobbing along. They're super-keen boaters you see - well, not so much boaters as adventurers, which is absolutely appropriate and you'll know why when I eventually get around to telling you who they are. They've sailed across the Atlantic ocean on their own! They've sailed across the Bering Sea up near Alaska, though they took an experienced navigator to help them there. In fact, if it weren't for the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown that came with it, they'd probably still be boating and wouldn't have returned to games at all. But being landlocked meant they got bored and so decided, eventually, to make a game again. That, in and of itself, is a remarkable thing, because when these two people left games in the late 90s, they completely left. They didn't so much as look at a game in the two decades that followed. They didn't play a game, didn't keep up to date with the industry - nothing. That's doubly-remarkable when you consider who they are: Ken and Roberta Williams, founders of the original mega-publisher and game-maker Sierra On-Line. They were responsible for so many games through the 80s and 90s, not least the King's Quest series that would enshrine Roberta Williams as a game-design legend - see what I mean about adventuring being very on-trend? To go from that - 1000 people working for you and being the biggest business around - to nothing, well, it blows my mind. But then, they are a refreshingly unconventional pair, as I discover for myself here. It's part of the reason why their new game - a remake of Colossal Cave, the game that started it all for them - intrigues me so much, because they'll do it their way, whether we end up liking that or not. And have they still got what it takes to make a great game? I don't know! That's what's so exciting; it'll be nothing less than unique. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Imagine a game that begins with a printout that reads: You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building. Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building and down a gully. In the distance there is a tall gleaming white tower. Now imagine typing some information into a teletype and then reading the next printout. And then another. A trail of paper lists your every move. This is interactive gaming in the 1970s. Later versions had a monitor so a screen could just show a cursor and the player needed to know what to type. Type N and hit enter and the player travels north. “Search” doesn't work but “look” does. “Take water” works as does “Drink water” but it takes hours to find dwarves and dragons and figure out how to battle or escape. This is one of the earliest games we played and it was marvelous. The game was called Colossal Cave Adventure and it was one of the first conversational adventure games. Many came after it in the 70s and 80s, in an era before good graphics were feasible. But the imagination was strong. The Oregon Trail was written before it, in 1971 and Trek73 came in 1973, both written for HP minicomputers. Dungeon was written in 1975 for a PDP-10. The author, Don Daglow, went on the work on games like Utopia and Neverwinter Nights Another game called Dungeon showed up in 1975 as well, on the PLATO network at the University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana. As the computer monitor spread, so spread games. William Crowther got his degree in physics at MIT and then went to work at Bolt Baranek and Newman during the early days of the ARPANET. He was on the IMP team, or the people who developed the Interface Message Processor, the first nodes of the packet switching ARPANET, the ancestor of the Internet. They were long hours, but when he wasn't working, he and his wife Pat explored caves. She was a programmer as well. Or he played the new Dungeons & Dragons game that was popular with other programmers. The two got divorced in 1975 and like many suddenly single fathers he searched for something for his daughters to do when they were at the house. Crowther combined exploring caves, Dungeons & Dragons, and FORTRAN to get Colossal Cave Adventure, often just called Adventure. And since he worked on the ARPANET, the game found its way out onto the growing computer network. Crowther moved to Palo Alto and went to work for Xerox PARC in 1976 before going back to BBN and eventually retiring from Cisco. Crowther loosely based the game mechanics on the ELIZA natural language processing work done by Joseph Weizenbaum at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the 1960s. That had been a project to show how computers could be shown to understand text provided to computers. It was most notably used in tests to have a computer provide therapy sessions. And writing software for the kids or gaming can be therapeutic as well. As can replaying happier times. Crowther explored Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky in the early 1970s. The characters in the game follow along his notes about the caves, exploring the area around it using natural language while the computer looked for commands in what was entered. It took about 700 lines to do the original Fortran code for the PDP-10 he had at his disposal at BBN. When he was done he went off on vacation, and the game spread. Programmers in that era just shared code. Source needed to be recompiled for different computers, so they had to. Another programmer was Don Woods, who also used a PDP-10. He went to Princeton in the 1970s and was working at the Stanford AI Lab, or SAIL, at the time. He came across the game and asked Crowther if it would be OK to add a few features and did. His version got distributed through DECUS, or the Digital Equipment Computer Users Society. A lot of people went there for software at the time. The game was up to 3,000 lines of code when it left Woods. The adventurer could now enter the mysterious cave in search of the hidden treasures. The concept of the computer as a narrator began with Collosal Cave Adventure and is now widely used. Although we now have vast scenery rendered and can point and click where we want to go so don't need to type commands as often. The interpreter looked for commands like “move”, “interact” with other characters, “get” items for the inventory, etc. Woods went further and added more words and the ability to interpret punctuation as well. He also added over a thousand lines of text used to identify and describe the 40 locations. Woods continued to update that game until the mid-1990s. James Gillogly of RAND ported the code to C so it would run on the newer Unix architecture in 1977 and it's still part of many a BSD distribution. Microsoft published a version of Adventure in 1979 that was distributed for the Apple II and TRS-80 and followed that up in 1981 with a version for Microsoft DOS or MS-DOS. Adventure was now a commercial product. Kevin Black wrote a version for IBM PCs. Peter Gerrard ported it to Amiga Bob Supnik rose to a Vice President at Digital Equipment, not because he ported the game, but it didn't hurt. And throughout the 1980s, the game spread to other devices as well. Peter Gerrard implemented the version for the Tandy 1000. The Original Adventure was a version that came out of Aventuras AD in Spain. They gave it one of the biggest updates of all. Colossal Cave Adventure was never forgotten, even though it was Zork was replaced. Zork came along in 1977 and Adventureland in 1979. Ken and Roberta Williams played the game in 1979. Ken had bounced around the computer industry for awhile and had a teletype terminal at home when he came across Colossal Cave Adventure in 1979. The two became transfixed and opened their own company to make the game they released the next year called Mystery House. And the text adventure genre moved to a new level when they sold 15,000 copies and it became the first hit. Rogue, and others followed, increasingly interactive, until fully immersive graphical games replaced the adventure genre in general. That process began when Warren Robinett of Atari created the 1980 game, Adventure. Robinett saw Colossal Cave Adventure when he visited the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1977. He was inspired into a life of programming by a programming professor he had in college named Ken Thompson while he was on sabbatical from Bell Labs. That's where Thompason, with Dennis Ritchie and one of the most amazing teams of programmers ever assembled, gave the world Unix and the the C programming language at Bell Labs. Adventure game went on to sell over a million copies and the genre of fantasy action-adventure games moved from text to video.

We look back at the career of Roberta Williams, the Queen of Adventure Games, as part of our discussion on King's Quest, released for the IBM PCJr in May of 1984. We'll look at how she got into game development and worked her way into the creation of King's Quest. Its importance to gaming is talked about, as well as the legacy it left behind. Finally, we'll talk about what Roberta Williams recently announced on today's adventure filled trip down Memory Card Lane.
This week we're talking about Phantasmagoria with our good friend Michael Cardinal. Phantasmagoria is a point-and-click adventure horror game designed by Roberta Williams for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows and released by Sierra On-Line on August 24, 1995. It tells the story of a writer who moves into a remote mansion and finds herself terrorized by supernatural forces. It was made at the peak of popularity for interactive movie games and features live actors and footage, both during cinematic scenes and within the three-dimensionally rendered environments of the game itself. About us: Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?) BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast/ Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Michael Cardinal Music by Mark Spurlock and Michael Cardinal References: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Entertainment https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberta_Williams https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasmagoria_(video_game) https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/sierra-made-phantasmagoria-after-being-turned-down-by-stephen-king-3190589 https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/04/roberta-and-ken-williams-open-up-about-their-first-video-game-in-25-years/
Roberta was barely interested in Ken's computer coding. But after playing the text-based game "Adventure" she started to wonder if there was more to these machines. Soon, the couple was running Sierra On-Line, and they brought us the dragon-slaying, wizard-dueling, skeleton-xylophoning adventure series that changed gaming forever: King's Quest! It's time for another visit with Stewart Cheifet and the Computer Chronicles. This time we're heading back to 1995 for a computer games special that includes Microsoft's ill-fated DirectX event Judgment Day, a very silly Bill Gates promo video, demos of MechWarrior 2 and Phantasmagoria (with Roberta Williams!), a random PlayStation-versus-Saturn head to head from Stewart, and more.SHOW NOTESThe relevant Computer Chronicles episode, season 13 episode 8:https://archive.org/details/CC1308_greatest_gamesBill Gates invades Doom:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2V9TFrmQ_QThe letter from Alex St. John's daughter:https://www.wired.com/2016/04/alex-st-johns-daughter-wrong-women-tech/Support the Pod! King's Quest is a graphic adventure game series, released between 1980 and 2016 and created by the American software company Sierra Entertainment. It is widely considered a classic series from the golden era of adventure games. Following the success of its first installments, the series was primarily responsible for building the reputation of Sierra. Roberta Williams, co-founder and former co-owner of Sierra, designed all of the King's Quest games until the series' reboot in 2015.
As well as mentioning Adventure X returning plus Ken and Roberta Williams' new game and release dates from the likes of Crowns and Pawns and Chinatown Detective Agency, the team also fits some reviews in too! Seoirse reviews two games - The Whisperer and Dexter Stardust : Adventures in Outer Space, whilst Laura takes a look at dark David Lynch-esque reverse detective game Who's Lila?.

One of my favourite actors – a performer who can do comedy and drama, stage and screen, and that’s Kat Stewart. Kat got a degree in marketing and arts before attending the National Theatre drama school at night while working as a publicist during the day. After graduating, she started making guest appearances on The Secret Life of Us, Stingers and Blue Heelers before landing her first leading role on BBC’s Supernova opposite Rob Brydon. After that, came her award-winning turn as Roberta Williams in Underbelly – followed by Newstopia, Tangle, Offspring, Mr and Mrs Murder and now Five Bedrooms. We discuss most of those shows in this interview and a few more. But before getting to the questions, we talked about our childhoods and Kat happened to mention she went to school with Portia De Rossi. Are you ready for an entire episode devoted to adoring Kat Stewart? If your answer is, who the hell is Kat Stewart...then HOW VERY DARE YOU, but also please allow us to educate you on her brilliance. Fun fact, she's the Emsolation podcasts number one ticket holder, okay so we don't actually have any tickets, (aside from the ones we have on ourselves, naturally) but what we mean is she's officially our biggest fan and has been since Emsolation first started. She holds that position because she is a dear friend of both Em and Michael and she's also been in almost ALL of our living rooms at one stage in our lives. You see Kat is famous for playing people like Roberta Williams in the TV Series Underbelly, and Nat Manning in Tangle, plus there's her role as Billie Proudman in Offspring (a role written by Michael Lucas and actually based on our fabulous leader Em Rusciano) and lets not forget her current role as Liz Wendell in Five Bedrooms. Look, I could sit here and type up her entire IMDB profile if you want, but that's hardly going to be as entertaining as this chat. To properly set the scene before you listen, please know that Em and Michael had both been having a teensy beverage, so they are feeling loose, also it was late at night, plus Em had no technical wizards to help her set up her recording devices, so there are a few hiccups within this episode. To begin we start with a very special introduction that Em hasn't even heard, she actually won't get to hear the introduction until she listens to the show once it's gone live on Spotify, you'll understand more once you plug yourself in and have a listen. Also it should be flagged that the hateful warlock of technical difficulties strikes again, this time he actually refused to record Em's vocals. So you'll get a great and hilarious chat for about 30 minutes, then you'll get selected highlights of the rest of the chat that feature recorded introductions from Em and then Kat and Michael's replies. In all honesty, the tequila when mixed with Em's competitive nature, plus the fact that Michael did actual research for once, means he was in for a whole heap of mockery throughout, so we took the actual funniest parts of the lost conversation and present them to you in bite size perfection. They include two wonderful pieces of Kat Stewart trivia from Michael, who loves to reveal uncomfortable secrets at the drop of a hat, plus there's a bunch of info on the forthcoming season of Five Bedrooms and also some proof that Kat is a huge fan of this podcast as well. Honestly, the stuff that was lost probably should stay lost, so we are seeing it as a blessing, but Em will be making a sacrifice of some sort to ensure that we manage to move forward without any technical hiccups in future episodes. So settle in for three mates having a huge gasbag about their friendship, a revisit with Kat's work as Roberta Williams in Underbelly, including a return of that character to our podcast mic, there's also a heap of Offspring talk, including the return of the fact that Michael is responsible for killing off Patrick, and how much info Michael stole from Em's actual life, to slip into the script. Plus there's soooo much more audio goodness that you didn't know you needed in your ears, until you actually hear it, so hurry up and get amongst it now. Learn more about your ad choices. Video games are a staple to our modern culture. We certainly have many people to be thankful for that, but there's one person in particular who we want to celebrate today, and that is game designer Roberta Williams. This week Alex chats with the amazing illustrious Roberta Williams, video game designer, writer and co-founder of Sierra On-line. Roberta gives us a first hand account of what it was like designing the first ever adventure games, a legacy that is still carried on in our video games to this very day!
Episode 23 of The Blank Canvas with Kat Stewart. Making a career in the performing arts is notoriously challenging but in this case the cream has certainly risen to the top. Kat Stewart's searing performance as Roberta Williams in the iconic first TV series of UNDERBELLY, planted her into our collective consciousness. Kat received both the 2008 AFI Award for Best Lead Actress and the 2009 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Actress. Whether comedy, drama or anything in between, the incredible performances and accolades have followed ever since, however Kat is probably best known for her AACTA Award winning portrayal of Billie Proudman in the TV phenomenon - Offspring. Aside from being a lovely human and charming conversationalist, this is an inspiring career change story; Kat completed a degree in marketing and arts and was working as full time publicist for publisher Penguin Books. Unable to shake the acting bug from some university theatre she dabbled in, she studied acting at night after work for 3 years, eventually getting her confidence up to taking the plunge into that arena. "There are some people that have just driven by an innate self-belief, I'm driven by a lot of self doubt, but it means that I work really hard because I do think that I can fail at any second. You know, every time I take on a job, I think, oh shit. I don't know if I can pull this off. Every character you starting from ground zero, but in a way that's the greatest thing, the fear and the trepidation is a respect for the task at hand.” Kat’s latest hit TV series is FIVE BEDROOMS which is produced by Hoodlum. Series Two is returning to Network 10 in 2021. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1830811/ https://www.instagram.com/kat_stewy/ W: https://theblankcanvaspodcast.com.au/ W: https://leerogers.com.au/ SOCIALS Insta: @theblankcanvaspodcast FB - The Blank Canvas Podcast Twitter: @blankcanvaspod THE BLANK CANVAS TEAM Produced by Lee Rogers & Rien MacDonald.
