The race to replace the District One County Board of Supervisors seat will likely lead to a run-off election, after no candidates got more than 50% of the vote in last night's election. Construction to close gaps in the border fence, south of San Diego, will begin immediately after the DHS secretary issued a waiver. People living in San Diego are concerned about the new parking regulations that might go into effect, because popular areas could charge more for parking and end free parking on Sundays.

Marvin shares his goal of showcasing Miami in a different light and his evolution from a social media presence to opening an investment company and running for a local office. Join Sebastian Rusk to learn more about Marvin Tapia's journey and his efforts to make a positive impact in his beloved city - Miami.TIMESTAMPS[00:02:21] Making a Difference in Miami.[00:05:06] Hispanic Advisory Board.[00:08:25] Community Engagement for Political Change.[00:11:14] The Myth of Miami Corruption.[00:16:04] Non-Partisan Approach to Politics.[00:21:13] Transparency and Community Input.[00:26:10] Mitigating Developer Impact on Neighborhoods.[00:28:02] Local Politician's Vendetta.[00:33:02] Little Havana's Cultural Significance.[00:39:28] Activating the Power of Voting.[00:41:10] Bringing Communities Together. In this episode, Marvin Tapia expresses his passion for bringing about change and disrupting the existing political system in Miami. He firmly believes that as a large city, Miami needs someone who can approach things differently, with integrity and a deep love for the city. His goal is to eliminate personal agendas and genuinely prioritize the well-being of the city and its residents. Sebastian Rusk, together with Marvin, firmly believes that elected officials should come from the community they represent and genuinely want to help the residents. They see politicians as a beacon of hope, someone who can bring about positive change by putting the needs of the community first. They want to make the political system more accessible and understandable for everyone, enabling individuals to actively participate in shaping their communities.Overall, this episode highlights the importance of caring for the community, working without personal agendas, and prioritizing the needs of the residents, and by doing so, they can bring about positive change and create a more inclusive and responsive political system.QUOTES:“But I really think that, especially with Miami being just a, just a gigantic city. And one of the big ones throughout the entire nation on here, there has to be someone to step in and say, we're going to do this different. We're going to do this, with integrity. We're going to do this with deep passion for the city that we live in. We're going to do this without agendas.” - Sebastian Rusk“That's how you inflict change is that you're, you know, from a civic perspective, you've been able to cultivate, a community of people that believe in what you're doing and understand your message and see eye to eye with that. And then in turn, when it turns political, you've already got that base. They're a true base.” - Sebastian Rusk"Change is a word that can trigger a lot of people. It's more about giving the power back to the people." - Marvin Tapia"We need a commissioner that's going to walk in through the front door with his head held up high, and not one that's going to walk out the back door in handcuffs." - Marvin TapiaThis is not going to be a win for me. I don't see it as a personal thing. I see it as a district-wide, city-wide win. So if I win, we all win." - Marvin TapiaSOCIAL MEDIA LINKSSebastian RuskInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/beyondthestorypodcast/Facebook:

The aftermath of war leaves physical scars in its wake. The abject destruction of landscapes and cities like Kherson, Kharkiv and Mariupol will take tens of years and maybe even a trillion dollars to rebuild, while systemic infrastructure like healthcare and energy plants have been equally affected. So where do you begin when you have to rebuild a country destroyed by war? Who pays for it? And what should be the priorities: people's homes, or hospitals, schools and roads? In this episode, we speak with two top European economists to answer these questions. First, Ivan Mikloš, a Slovakian politician and the country's former Minister of Finance. Secondly, Tymofiy Mylovanov, who was previously the Minister of Economy in Ukraine, and is now the president of the Kyiv School of Economics and an advisor to the Zelenskiy Administration.  We also hear from Borys Dorogov, co-founder of interior architecture studio Balbek Bureau, and Adrii Kopylenko, the co-founder of charity organisation District One, to hear how smaller organisations are already beginning the rebuilding process from the ground up. Rundown -   Intro with Troubadour Dave Gunders - 00:36   "Do What I Say" by Dave Gunders - 19:13   Paul Pazen - 24:38   Paul Pazen is a Denver cop, through and through. Born and raised in Denver in the shadow of District One, Pazen attended North High School and then joined the Marines where he served in the first Gulf War. He returned to join the Denver Police Department in January 1995.   Pazen took on one top assignment after another. He rose through the ranks to become Denver's police chief from 2018 through 2022. Retiring last October, Pazen is poised at age 52 for his next public service challenge. We discuss what's next.   Public service was instilled in Pazen at an early age by his grandmother Lola Trujillo. Pazen only wants to succeed in Colorado and has no plans to move. Although he seriously considered a run for Denver mayor, listen as he explains his family reasons for not running now.   Pazen initiated successful law enforcement programs and had crime going down pre-pandemic. This former Denver police chief created and implemented the STAR (Support Team Assisted Response) program which sends mental health professionals, not cops, to certain non-violent calls.   Pazen responds to controversies occurring during his tenure. There was a $14 million judgment in federal court for DPD civil rights violations responding in 2020 to George Floyd protests. Former Chief Pazen brings up that 81 police officers were injured in that terrible week of downtown violence. We also discuss the Lodo shooting incident in which a DPD officer is now indicted.   Chief Pazen explains his fear of mass murder and preparation therefor. We review horrific crime sprees that went down on his watch. We remember the tattoo parlor victims and others in Lakewood and Denver, slain by a gunman who wrote it all down. Could DPD have stopped him? Could prosecutors? We discuss.   We also discussed the tragic murder of Shmuel Silverberg at Yeshivah Toras Chaim in August of 2021 and how his five assailants have still not been arraigned in Denver's congested criminal court system. Chief Pazen showed up at that murder scene and countless others.   Pazen provides behind the scenes details, including how these crimes affected him personally. Discussed also is the tragic murder of Isabella Thallas and the critical wounding of Darian Simon on June 10, 2020. We try to further solve the mystery of the AK-47 murder weapon which belonged to DPD Sgt. Dan Politica.   We talk about Denver and Colorado's crime problems and their solutions, including how to combat car thefts and fentanyl deaths. Murder is not at record levels in Denver, but Colorado is setting murder records. What is going on? Pazen has wisdom.   Troubadour Dave Gunders has abundant wisdom, as displayed in his magnificent song, "Do What I Say." Dave Gunders contributes to a lively introduction, discussing current events, including the Biden classified documents investigation, Governor Jared Polis' inaugural and possible run for president, as well as guitar greats, the late George Harrison and Jeff Beck. GoGo's Belinda Carlisle talk too.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board candidate Lt. Col. Bill Fountain (USAF retired) is running a campaign against wokism, Critical Race Theory, and Radical Gender Theory for the District One seat. Fountain is a former CMS teacher and said the district's focus on social engineering rather than core academic objectives is harming students - particularly poor and minority ones. Also, a local activist group is proposing a solution to the controversy surrounding inappropriate books in CMS libraries. The Charlotte Observer reports: Brooke Weiss, chair of Moms for Liberty-Mecklenburg, says she's never been in favor of banning books. But books containing controversial content, particularly explicit sex, should be rated with age restrictions to give parents the choice about whether their child should have access to the book. ... Weiss proposes the district establish a book review committee that includes parents, teachers, librarians and administrators. The committee would review challenged books and make a decision that applies to all CMS schools' libraries and classrooms. The committee would also assign a universal book content rating. For example, books with a “1” rating, the lowest, contain no profanity, no reference to sexual activities and are appropriate for all audiences. Books with a “5” rating, the highest, make explicit references to “aberrant” sexual activities. Books with a rating of 3-5 are restricted, and parents must opt into the system that allows their child to access those books.    Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our winter high school sports talk is highlighted this week by the start of the PIAA championships in basketball and the PIAA tournament for wrestling. Several girls' and boys' basketball teams, in various classifications, begin their road to state gold with first-round games this week. And, in wrestling, the PIAA championships begin Thursday in Hershey and run through Saturday. A weekly podcast that's all about winter sports in the Bux-Mont area with Drew Markol and Daryl Bell of the Intelligencer/Courier Times sports staff. Boys' basketball There are seven area teams, including Bensalem, Abington and Archbishop Wood in Class 6A, vying for state gold. It's a long trek, and each round gets harder and harder, but will we see a local team emerge and win it all? Time will tell. Girls' basketball A whopping 10 area teams - with four in Class 6A and four in Class 4A - begin play this week with the ultimate goal of a PIAA title on the line. Defending PIAA champ Archbishop Wood looks like the odds-on favorite again in Class 4A, but undefeated Gwynedd-Mercy might have something to say about that. Pennsbury, in Class 6A, placed third in the District One tournament and will also look to make a run. Wrestling Faith Christian will be well represented in Class 2A as seven Lions, an astounding number, will be competing for gold at the Giant Center in the PIAA championships. In Class 3A, three seniors, Council Rock South's Matt Colajezzi at 160 pounds, Central Bucks East's Quinn Collins at 189 and Central Bucks West's Carl DiGiorgio at 215 lead the way for our area.

Our winter high school sports talk is highlighted this week as we discuss which area girls' and boys' basketball teams are still going in the PIAA District One and District 12 tournaments. The girls are having more success at the highest classification as Souderton and Pennsbury both have reached the Class 6A semifinals. On the wrestling side, the area's top individual performers are prepping for this weekend's Southeast Regional Tournaments. Our Class 3A wrestlers will be competing at Oxford while the Class 2A individuals will be at Bethlehem Freedom. A weekly podcast that's all about winter sports in the Bux-Mont area with Drew Markol and Daryl Bell of the Intelligencer/Courier Times sports staff. Girls' basketball We could see an all-area final in the PIAA District One Class 6A tournament as both second-seeded Souderton and fourth-seeded Pennsbury are in the semifinals on opposite sides of the bracket. Both teams play in the semifinals Wednesday night. Also, congratulations to unbeaten Gwynedd-Mercy for winning the Class 4A district crown and to the Archbishop Wood girls who will be playing in the District 12 4A title game on Wednesday. Boys' basketball In District One, there are no area teams left in the winners' bracket as Bensalem dropped into the consolation bracket after a loss in the quarterfinals. Another meeting with Abington could be on tap for the Owls. Faith Christian did win the Class A district title while Archbishop Wood is still going in the District 12 tournament. Wrestling Quakertown and Council Rock South, as expected, dominated the PIAA District One-East Class 3A tournament as the host Panthers crowned five individual champions to snare the team title while the Golden Hawks were next with three individual winners and a second-place team finish. In Class 2A, Faith Christian dominated the District One/12 Tournament by crowning a whopping eight individual champions.

We go around the area talking everything winter sports each week. A weekly podcast that's all about winter sports in the Bux-Mont area with Drew Markol and Daryl Bell of the Intelligencer/Courier Times sports staff. Boys basketball The emergence of George School thanks to an infusion of young talent has the Cougars optimistic about the season. How Abington, a perennial District One power, is trying to stay that way despite not having a star player like the Ghosts have had so many times in the past. Over at Neshaminy, a hard working bunch is using hustle and grit to succeed. Girls basketball Archbishop Wood, defending PIAA state champions, are loaded again and priming for another long playoff run. And in the Suburban One League, Pennsbury, in the Patriot Division, is undefeated and being led by University of Maryland commit Ava Sciola - while Souderton looks strong in the Colonial Division and Abington, in the Liberty Division, is off to a great start behind Cire Worley. Wrestling This weekend's rugged Escape The Rock tournament at Council Rock South brings together local powerhouses like Quakertown, Faith Christian and the host Golden Hawks, along with a bevy of out of state powers. It all adds up to one of the toughest tournaments you'll find anywhere. And two wrestlers to watch at Escape The Rock would surely be Council Rock South's Matt Colajezzi and Faith Christian's Eric Alderfer. Both are seniors and both finished fourth in Hershey last season. The tournament will also mark the return of Quakertown to Council Rock South's gym where the Panthers edged the Golden Hawks 33-31 in a classic dual meet a month ago. A pin from Quakertown heavyweight Fred Retter in the final match was the difference.
