The nebulous idea of “enough” is the topic of conversation in the season 2 finale of A Sunny Side Up Life podcast. Most of us struggle with this concept very early in our lives, as we begin to understand complex topics and facts of life like class, race, and inequity. But how do we handle not being enough as adults when not reaching “enoughness” has real mental, physical and psychological ramifications? I explore “being enough” by discussing our inner critic, the power of therapy and trusted confidants, and how social media will never be able to tell the full story. It was early 2020 and my husband and I were bright-eyed and bushy tailed when we bought our land. Acres of East Texas pine trees, quiet neighbors (mostly cows), and a creek. The term “trauma” seems to be rampant in 2023… especially on social media. Being “trauma informed,” experiencing “childhood trauma,” or having a “trauma bond” are phrases used repeatedly to describe certain pivotal and disturbing life experiences and/or mental distress. And while sometimes “trauma” is over exaggerated or used incorrectly, the current spotlight on this pervasive problem has brought, front-and-center, the need to explore it in greater depth. This leads to the question: what about trauma and money? Can you have financial PTSD? Can you experience financial trauma? How valid are these things… or are we, as a society, being dramatic when it comes to this pairing? In this episode, you'll learn more about: What is financial trauma + who experiences financial trauma The 6 common ways financial trauma manifests itself in your body, mind, and life Ways to address financial trauma and learn healthy coping mechanisms Sami's financial trauma: money examples she had during her childhood, how these experiences shaped her money narrative + more RESOURCES USED: https://www.choosingtherapy.com/financial-trauma/ https://theneighborhoodfinanceguy.com/empowerment-and-financial-trauma/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/briannawiest/2019/04/04/financial-trauma-is-a-reality-for-one-third-of-millennials-this-expert-explains-how-to-recover/?sh=592085c130c2 https://plutusfoundation.org/2022/financial-trauma-impact-creators/ https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/finance/generational-trauma CREATORS TO FOLLOW: https://twitter.com/RahkimSabree https://www.instagram.com/stevenmhughes/ PAST EPISODES YOU'LL ENJOY: FEELING FINANCIAL STRUGGLE, COMBATING INFLATION & HOW TO OVERCOME FEELING OUT OF CONTROL WITH YOUR MONEY SPENDING FUN MONEY WHEN YOU'RE BROKE COMPOUNDING EMOTIONAL INTEREST ASSUL RESOURCES: 1:1 Coaching With Sami: Apply today Instagram: Follow me on the ‘gram Facebook: Follow me on Facebook The Sunny Sqad: Join the VIP Facebook Group SHOW INFORMATION: A Sunny Side Up Life Podcast is a show for women who are ready to live an abundant life full of freedom + positivity. That post kicked off the beginning of a real place where women could connect and talk about money and all other things important to them and soon after the post was published, Angela created the Women's Personal Finance Facebook community. Later that year, Regina wrote a guest post on Angela's blog about her newly coined term PrepperFi. Angela and Regina cemented their friendship over the course of Regina's son developing cancer and entering into treatment. Sometimes, great things come out of hardships. The Facebook community has now grown to over 70k members and is known to be one of the best, most supportive places on the internet. With WPF's expanded community and mission supporters, they offer a premium community, WPF Insiders, articles about money written by other women, access to money experts, resources about all things finances, a super neat swag shop, and more. You've probably heard the saying, "It's not about how much money you have, it's how you manage that money." Well, this episode is a perfect example of why that is 100% accurate. Haley and Justin Brown-Woods from Price Of Avocado Toast Podcast joins A Sunny Side Up Life podcast to talk about their journey into the personal finance space and financial coaching, how their lives have been changed by podcasting and what it takes to work together as a Millennial married couple on money management. In this episode, we chat about: What Haley and Justin did with a $600K inheritance How tracking your money will transform your life Why Dave Ramsey got the boot from their lives The importance of spending on joy + more GUEST BIO: Haley and Justin Brown-Woods are a married millennial couple from California working to help folks normalize conversations about money through their company, Price of Avocado Toast. In their early 20's, they received a $600k payout from a wrongful death lawsuit after Justin's grandmother died of mesothelioma. They each grew up in low-income single-mother households and financial education was not a priority. So you could say, they essentially won the lottery. They spent every last penny of the $600k and then found themselves in over $220k worth of debt in just 3.5 years. In late 2019, they decided to start their journey to financial freedom and they paid off $132k in 18 months. If your goal is to become a more positive person and have a more intentional life, then you also have to expect to feel more empathy when hard times happen. There are, I dare say, millions of “Get Rich Quick” schemes. They sometimes come in the form of #bossbabe MLMs and they sometimes come in the form of going “all in” in bitcoin due to internet hype. The truth about a real financial journey… you know, for everyday “normal” people, is that it's not about thriving everyday. It's not about getting rich quick. It's about balance. It's about the BIG picture. It's about long-term thinking. Even in your downturns, you have to look at the average trajectory of your journey. Have you made progress? Are you working towards your goals? Where do you think you'll be in x years? It's easy to get stuck in the weeds of negativity and “the grind,” but remember: It's not get rich quick. It's get rich consistently. IN THIS EPISODE, SAMI SHARES ABOUT: Everyone has good and bad seasons in life, even with personal finances It's important to consider the BIG PICTURE, not zoom in on where you're at right in this moment. Keep perspective Building wealth, fulfilling dreams and achieving a life you want to live is a long-term, consistency-based process There's no ‘get rich quick' scheme — it's about living the life you want to live over time and making habits that are sustainable RESOURCES MENTIONED: Digital Budgeting System Worksheets 1:1 Coaching with Sami —> Sami's YouTube Channel

It's financial literacy month, which means my social media feeds are ablaze with tips and information all surrounding personal finance. I love this time of year, because we are coming out of hibernation and setting our sites on how we can improve ourselves. A spring cleaning of our personal finances and emotional lives is a wonderful, fresh way to celebrate spring. With all of that being said, I want to touch on the subject of money and emotions. We have this incorrect notion that money is removed from feeling. I am thinking of how I learned (even more) the importance of holding my loved ones close. Of not taking for granted what we have, of not hoarding things other people may need (lookin' at you, TP) and, above all, how this season of life will change all others. If I can take away one single thing this year, it's to be kind to one another. A scarcity mindset is the belief that there will never be enough, resulting in feelings of fear, stress, and anxiety. Does this sound familiar? Is your life in a scarcity state? Do you, “Well, that's just the way it is,” instead of changing your frame of mind and seeking out your own happiness? Do you sit in negativity? You're not alone and negative thoughts are normal, BUT the reality is that these thoughts and these patterns are holding you back from your potential. They're holding you back from your best life! In our society, where money and is the popularized pinnacle of success, it's easy to correlate self-worth with income. Here's your reality check: Your worth isn't dependent upon the amount of money you make. I want you to read that again. Your worth isn't dependent upon the amount of money you make. Our worth is not dependent on how productive you, how busy you are, or how much you make for a living— no matter how much our world tries to convince you otherwise. You are worthy by simply existing.
