It's my great pleasure to have Kimberly Ann Johnson join me for a rich and wide-ranging conversation on The Becoming Podcast this month. I've been following Kimberly's work since her seminal book, The Fourth Trimester, rocked the worlds of mothers and birth workers alike when it was released five years ago.  Since then, I've come to view Kimberly as someone who sees the connections between seemingly unrelated things and brings us insight and wisdom from intersections in the worlds of birth + postpartum wellness, somatics, sex and trauma. Here's a little more about Kimberly:  she is a Sexological Bodyworker, Somatic Experiencing practitioner, yoga teacher, postpartum advocate, and single mom. Working hands-on in integrative women's health and trauma recovery for more than a decade, she helps women heal from birth injuries, gynecological surgeries, and sexual boundary violations. Kimberly is the author of the Call of the Wild: How We Heal Trauma, Awaken Our Own Power, and Use It for Good, as well as the early mothering classic The Fourth Trimester, and the upcoming co-authored book with Stephen Jenkinson, Reckoning.  She is the host of the Sex Birth Trauma podcast. The conversation I had with Kimberly was so generously informative and thoughtful – I can't wait to share it with you.  We talked about: > Kimberly's new book, Reckoning, co-authored with Stephen Jenkinson, on navigating grief in the times we're living in. > How Kimberly's first book, The Fourth Trimester, was truly a roadmap for the rite of passage into motherhood….and also what she feels are the necessary next steps in our culture's approach to postpartum wellness. > How female nervous systems are unique, and how Kimberly's recent book The Call of The Wild invites women to understand their nervous systems and learn what they need.  Hint:  it's not more deep breaths and hot baths. > How learning the particular language of your nervous system allows you to experience deeper authenticity and power – even in circumstances, like birth, that are often vulnerable. > “Hold it” moments, and how we can metabolize important moments in our lives, no matter how tiny or tectonic their impact.

*Gains weight during pregnancy* People: Oh cute, you're eating for two!*Gains weight postpartum* People: Ew, you need to start losing the baby fat ASAP.Why do people think that our bodies are ready to start bouncing back to an intense exercise routine and restricted diet IMMEDIATELY after giving birth? Postpartum is the time that you need to rest, replenish, and recover! Childbirth and infant feeding demand a lot from our body, and when we deny those demands, our health can suffer. Here's why: - 20 million women in America have an eating disorder. - Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. - Only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.- 93% of individuals who identified disordered eating during their pregnancy are not identified by their providers. Jaren Soloff, a Registered Dietitian, an Internal Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and I discuss her experience with recovering from an eating disorder, how motherhood challenged her relationship with food and her body in ways she couldn't imagine,  the importance of practicing intuitive eating, especially around your children, and the dangers of restricting your diet while recovering from childbirth.Jaren is the founder of FULL CRCL, which provides nutrition counseling and lactation consultations to help both mom and baby thrive in motherhood. Informed by her own journey and the hundreds of women she has counseled, Jaren's experience comes full circle to support women in navigating pregnancy, birth, and postpartum from a simple and intuitive framework. You can receive Jaren's pre and post birth nutrition counseling or lactation counseling at her website: https://www.fullcrcl.co/aboutOr follow her on Instagram: @Fullcrcl_Check out her new cookbook:  The Postnatal CookbookJoin the Postpartum Revolution on FacebookQuestions? It's December, which means we're heading into the season of colder temps and less daylight, and it's a time I feel called to hibernate and store up some energy for these long winter months. I've already put up lights, candles, and a tree to create a cozy den for myself! It's something I've done for years, as an antidote to the bustling Holiday Season, where everyone is busy, over extended, and staying up late. That frantic energy during the darkest month of the year just doesn't sit well with me - it doesn't feel good to be out of sync with the seasons.  Ancient medicines like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine describe Winter as a season of cool, wet, slow, feminine and quiet energies. So, to feel balanced and healthy we should lean in to the qualities of warm, dry, coziness and use the slow, quiet, feminine qualities  to rest, reflect, hold space, hibernate, and withdraw some of your outwardly focused energy and redirect it inward. That's what I'll be doing this December - slowing down, resting, reflecting, deepening connection to my community... and building season 2 of The Postpartum Revolution!I'd love to stay in touch over the break, so please follow me on Instagram @fullbloomwellness603 - you can join me in a daily 5 min morning meditation (or just cheer me on and hold me accountable to my own practice!). (let's start a Relaxation Revolution!) And, let me know what you want to hear more of in season 2! I love talking to change makers and learning more about how we can rise up together as a community and change postpartum culture for the better. Thank you so much for all the love, support, engagement, and inspiration for my first season - it's been a wild ride and a lot of fun... a bright spot in this strange year. No More Trauma: An Anesthesiologist's Perspective on Creating a Positive Birth Experience with Dr. Tracey Vogel

The Postpartum Revolution

It's time the standards change for all birthing experiences. There's a whole lot of trauma in a person's life that never gets the attention it deserves and is too easily brushed under the rug. How did we let this become the new norm? When it comes to birth, let's ask ourselves; is basic survival enough?NO! The patient's needs are not being heard. The providers don't have the time to really listen, nor are they taught how to empathize in medical school. The side effects of birth trauma are more significant issues than we make them out to be. Something CAN be done if we stop being quiet and nice and start to give give real, honest feedback. No more: "Everything is fine." - "I'm okay." - "The baby is healthy, and that's all that matters."Instead, we need to empower women to talk about their feelings and advocate for  themselves. That's why I was so happy to invite Dr. Tracey Vogel, a practicing OB anesthesiologist and a certified Sexual Assault Counselor, on to talk about what can be changed in the labor and delivery units so that birthing people feel seen, heard, and supported.Tracey truly is the definition of the Postpartum Revolution. Dr. Vogel is fighting to bring attention to this trauma, and she is a strong advocate for consistent feedback to the medical system. Dr. Vogel gives women a voice to make a change. Tracey learned many of her skills for trauma informed care while becoming a rape counselor. She's combined her experience and knowledge as an anesthesiologist with obstetrics and has some unique ideas for the healthcare world. In today's episode, we talk about the importance of informed consent and how the patient's needs should be discussed ahead of time. What-if scenarios should be a real discussion with actual back-up plans. "Part of fear is lack of understanding and lack of knowledge."There is no black and white answer to the issues. It takes some creativity to navigate the gray areas and find the right solution for both parties. Tracy has created a center that is giving women the power to have their voices heard. She's creating structured plans, investigating fears, and bettering communication across the board! Everyone deserves a positive birth experience. Want to work with Tracy? Check out her website http://www.theempowermentequation.com/You can also share your story, read about other birth experiences, or write a grievance on her website.Twitter @TraceyVogelMDAre you a member of The Postpartum Revolution's Facebook group? First trimester: nauseaSecond trimester: eat all the things! (but don't gain “too much” weight)Third trimester: heartburn, still eating all the things and watching the scaleFourth trimester: time to go on a diet to lose the baby weight! This old familiar pattern is so engrained in our lives.. it's in movies, diet culture, blogs, memes... so this all must be normal right? Nothing we can do about it, it's all just part of the sacrifice birthing people sign up for when they decide to become parents. Right? Wrong. I talked with registered dietitian and perinatal nutrition specialist Shelby Guptill about how we can nourish ourselves throughout our pregnancy and postpartum journeys. And guess what? Nausea, cravings, heartburn, bloating... they're common, but not normal! AND there's a way to combat these ailments through food. No fad diets. No miracle products. Just a food first, supplements second approach to nourishing the birthing person along their journey. And the best part? Shelby is here to teach you how to do it! (aka no more google rabbit holes, judgey mom blogs, and wasted money on supplements your neighbor “heard were helpful”). Our postpartum bodies need to be nourished with whole foods, not deprived of calories. In fact, Shelby argues that we need MORE nutrients, food variety, and calories so that we can heal our bodies and feed our infants. We also talk about weight gain and weight loss, the BS that is BMI, and how to start listening for that deep inner wisdom that we all possess (it's still there, despite all the doubts that we have been taught to fear!). Nourishing ourselves is a lifelong pursuit, and pregnancy is the perfect time to start. Connect with Shelby:shelbyRD@thelunacenter.com603-609-7502IG @shelbyguptillRD FB @ShelbyGuptillNutritionCounselingAre you a member of The Postpartum Revolution's facebook group?  You can find Shelby's free Prenatal Nutrition Handout there!Questions? I got to chat with author Beth Berry about her new, bestselling book, Motherwhelmed, and it was an affirming and empowering conversation to say the least! If you are a mother, this pod's for you!We talk about... - the standards in place on what being a “good mother” means, and how they have been written for us without our knowing.- how mothers *need* to have a community... your child needs you to have a community.- how unreasonable it is to expect a new mother to recreate a village of support during the most vulnerable moments in their life.- and how to rewrite our “shitty first drafts” so we can start to heal ourselves with love and compassionBasically, if there is ever a Postpartum Revolution academy, this book will be required reading! Beth Berry is a life coach, small group and retreat facilitator, mother of four daughters and author of the recently published #1 Best Seller Motherwhelmed. Follow her journey at www.revolutionfromhome.com. Connect with Beth on Facebook and Instagram @revolutionfromhomeQuestions? **Trigger Warning: pregnancy loss** When my friend Steven heard about this podcast, he reached out to share his story about the pregnancy journey he and his wife Robyn went through. Sadly, the difficulties that he and his wife faced are not uncommon. As I listened to his story, the I kept thinking that if this is the experience of a White, male physician... it makes sense why America's maternal mortality rates are the highest in the developed world and the only country to see these numbers continue to rise. We also talk about how poorly medical residents are treated during residency, why America needs paid parental leave, the difficulties of breastfeeding, and the struggle with postpartum isolation for new families. Steven also shares a bit about how these experiences have influenced how he practices as a Family Physician, and how he is still optimistic about the future of medicine.Connect with Steven:aussenbergfamilymedicine@gmail.com 520-329-0511Instagram + Facebook: @aussenbergfamilymedicineBONUS!Steven is licensed to practice in AZ, CA, GA and PA… and if you mention that you heard him on the Postpartum Revolution podcast, your first consult with him is free!Questions?
