In this episode of the Movement Logic Podcast, hosts Laurel Beversdorf and Dr. Sarah Court critically examine common beliefs surrounding spinal flexion exercises and osteoporosis, particularly from a yoga and Pilates perspective. They delve into two pivotal studies on exercise and fracture risk, both led by Dr. Mehrsheed Sinaki, a renowned specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The first study, Postmenopausal Spinal Osteoporosis: Flexion versus Extension Exercises, is frequently cited on Pilates websites and in yoga and Pilates teacher trainings as evidence that spinal flexion is risky for individuals with osteoporosis—even during bodyweight exercises. However, despite its widespread use to justify movement restrictions, the study has notable methodological flaws. The second study, Stronger Back Muscles Reduce the Incidence of Vertebral Fractures: A Prospective 10-Year Follow-up of Postmenopausal Women, suggests that progressively overloaded back strengthening exercises can reduce fracture risk—even if the strengthening occurred only for a few years in the distant past. Yet, this study also has its own limitations. When viewed together, these studies present an intriguing contrast: one warns of the potential dangers of spinal flexion (even under low loads) based on weak evidence, while the other highlights the lasting protective benefits of strength training. Laurel and Sarah explore why bodyweight spinal flexion is often singled out as risky and question whether this caution is always justified. They also discuss the ethical implications and the boundaries of a movement teacher's scope of practice—particularly when making broad recommendations to avoid certain movements based on limited or flawed research. The hosts emphasize the importance of individualized context in exercise prescriptions, the need to follow medical guidance from a student's doctor, the evidence-backed benefits of strength training, and the necessity of empowering students with the autonomy to make informed movement choices.Get on the wait list for our Bone Density Course: Lift for LongevityFollow Movement Logic on Instagram00:56 Podcast Production & Content Creation01:33 Bone Density & Squat Depth02:20 Benefits of Full ROM Strength Training08:24 Is Spinal Flexion Dangerous for OP?10:00 Issues with Yoga/Pilates for OP Classes18:43 1984 Paper: Flexion vs. Extension for OP40:22 Flaws in the 1984 Study41:57 2002 Study: Stronger Back Muscles & Fractures43:03 2002 Study Design & Methods46:35 2002 Study Key Findings52:09 2002 Study Limitations56:30 Practical Takeaways01:06:15 Ethics for Movement Teachers01:17:43 ConclusionReferences:Episode 77: Make Dr. Loren Fishman Make SenseEpisode 92: Are You Getting Dexa Scammed? 1984 Sinaki paper 2002 Sinaki paper
Episode 2604 - Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino discuss the return of CICO, hormones and eating, yoga and pilates, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/02/the-return-of-cico-episode-2604 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - The Return of CICO Vinnie has been getting a lot of questions lately regarding restricting and tracking calories. (2:00) Does CICO (Calories In Calories Out) work? (5:00) Short answer: yes. But why do it? It is a form of restriction and the best way of losing weight is through controlling your hormones, which can be done without tracking every calorie. (13:00) You can control aspects of your hormones through lifestyle and eating. Eating correctly and avoiding processed junk helps control insulin, ghrelin, leptin. Insulin regulates blood glucose. Ghrelin is the hormone that signals hunger. Leptin signals when you are full. Cortisol responds to stress and can cause weight gain. Vinnie explains how “resistance” develops. (30:00) Vinnie mentions he had a consultation where a caller's life coach joined in the conversation. (39:00) Anna loves this idea! Getting the extra help, if you can do it, could be beneficial. ALSO: You can invest in Eat Happy Kitchen through her website and StartEngine. (18:30) Details are at Eat Happy Kitchen. Yoga/Pilates 101 What about yoga, Pilates, & stretching as forms of exercise? Vinnie loves yoga because it can stretch your muscles and joints, but it is not necessarily great for strength training. (43:00) Reformer Pilates is a great anaerobic exercise and great for strength. Don't rush through the exercises. Take your time and do it right. It should kick your ass, but not put you in pain. Stretching is good for muscles and joints, but doesn't count towards strength training. More News If you are interested in the NSNG® VIP group, register here! Takeaways: Perceived stress from the cycle before can make PMS in the following cycle worse Aerobic activity helps more with physical PMS symptoms, Yoga/Pilates helps more with mental PMS symptoms A well balanced, unprocessed nutritional intake is best long term, but more research is definitely needed in this area Research Quoted: A post-phenomenological analysis of using menstruation tracking apps for the management of premenstrual syndrome - 2022 Association of Premenstrual Syndrome with Adiposity and Nutrient Intake Among Young Indian Women - 2022 Associations of premenstrual symptoms with daily rumination and perceived stress and the moderating effects of mindfulness facets on symptom cyclicity in premenstrual syndrome - 2023 Evaluation of the effectiveness of yoga in management of premenstrual syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis - 2022 Exercise for premenstrual syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials - 2020 Impact of nutritional diet therapy on premenstrual syndrome - 2023 Let's Be Friends! On Tuesday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey spoke to Daniel Flanagan, Director of Hackett Flanagan Academy of Irish Dance, Shannon and Rosie McMahon, Yoga Instructor, Life coach, Exercise and health fitness coach from Ballynacally but based in Ennis Yoga and Pilates teachers are said to be 'frustrated' at the ongoing Covid restrictions which have impacted on their ability to hold in-person classes. While, Irish dance classes are permitted to run, only individual training is allowed indoors with a strict 2 meter rule. It is unlikely there will be any significant easing of public health rules until the end of next month at the earliest as the Government focuses on the resumption of schools.

Each episode features Jill's experiences with personal development and her journey to being yourself, sometimes featuring guests who are prime examples of women helping women. Jill has built a community of women helping women so that each one can reach their full potential as the badass girl boss they are. Whether you're already a champion of women's empowerment, you're a girl boss interested in personal development, you'd like advice on being yourself, you're looking for a community of women helping women, or you're just here for Jill's lessons and entertainment, the Be You podcast is for you. ------------------ McLean McGown is a mother of two, wife, Postpartum Doula, Yoga & Pilates teacher, Nutritionist, Buddhist, and yoga practitioner living in Los Angeles. Valerie Wiest shares her experience of going through a marital breakup. One may not think immediately of leadership before they hear her story but leadership is what Valerie is all about. She is raising her children, helping women with strength training and is on a mission to start a business. What is amazing to us is Valerie does not throw her Ex under the bus. She looks inwardly and admits that she wasn't her true self during the years leading up to the affair and eventual divorce. Her attitude allows her to accept some of the responsibility and she does not want to be viewed as a victim. Pretty amazing perspective if you ask us.Have you ever hearsd the line, everything happens for a reason? This too is discussed. Some things in life can't be explained. What would be the reason for pedophilia? There is none. A better expression is :there can be meaning found in every situation. Other gems in the conversation include: Comparison is the thief of joy.Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.Don't let hidden fears prevent you from achieving your goal.Trials in our lives can prepare us for future challenges.Valerie can be found on Linkedin here https://www.linkedin.com/in/valeriewiest/ Her book on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/Surviving-Affair-honest-journal-entries-ebook/dp/B08VFHQPK4/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2SDKQSD16UYY2&dchild=1&keywords=surviving+an+affair+valerie&qid=1615857204&sprefix=surviving+an+affair+%2Caps%2C165&sr=8-1 Be sure to connect with us in our Lead Sell Grow – The Human Experience Tribe Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadsellgrowDownload the FREE ebook that will help you connect with, and understand your buyers faster! Victoria Cunningham from @stretchbodymind is here to talk about her journey that takes her from teaching a full class timetable of Yoga/Pilates classes, to shutting up shop and going all in with her Teacher Training offerings. Like many people last year, she had to pivot. She said goodbye to her all of her loyal clients and stopped teaching her Yoga/Pilates classes, and went all in with her teacher training offerings. But, there was a catch. None of her qualifications up to 2020 were delivered online, so it was huge learning curve, and it felt a bit like a race against time to not let her already paid up Yoga and Pilates students down: they were expecting in-person training and that's not what Victoria could provide. What Victoria offers her students is something very unique for the industry. And, if you've missed chatting to other colleagues at work, or, you're just desperate to talk shop with someone, view this conversation between Victoria and Claire as 2 passionate colleagues chatting about what life's like as a teacher trainer. In this episode I breakdown all the common fitness practices and explain how to make them more Pelvic Floor Safe. Including Yoga, Pilates, Walking, Running, Hiking, Cycling and of course Strength Training. In my course and coaching we focus on mastering your ABCs (Alignment, Breathing and Ceasing Tension for muscles to function properly) and then challenge that up with more intense and challenging fitness routines like the ones explained in this episode. Although my Pilates career has run its course I definitely have it to thank for my teaching currently in my community. Stay tuned as we find out the similarities and differences of Yoga and Pilates, Where the heck did they originate from? What is the culture like? Might you gravitate to one more than the other? Today we will chat with one of my FAVORITE teachers Anula Maiberg. We will be discussing the subject of Yoga and Pilates. I was really giggly because I love Anula's humor at the same time she had a lot of wisdom and insight about Pilates, the future of it, and thoughts on teaching. Have you ever had a conversation with someone and it makes you reevaluate everything? This was that for me, and it's all recorded. This week I’m finding out all about pilates and yoga, the difference between them, the importance of movement, and the massive benefits that can be had from their practice. To give me insights, tips and advice, I speak to two of Ireland’s leading experts and practitioners, Annie Kirwan and Lee Tracey, who are co-founders of Reformation, a Dublin-based studio. Annie and Lee also reveal how and why yoga and pilates became so important to them, how they ditched careers in science and finance to pursue their dreams and why we need to all start re-connecting with ourselves to find quiet time in this world of busy-ness.
