#200: Martin Frick, Director of the World Food Programme's Berlin office, sits down with Dave to discuss issues of food security and their interconnectedness with the Climate Crisis. The challenges of food waste, industrial agriculture, misguided philanthropy, and the need for global cooperation to extend true support to smallholder farmers all come up.Dr. Martin Frick has served as the Senior Director of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Director for Climate Change at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Fans!https://www.realorganicproject.org/1000-real-fans/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Today, I'm thrilled to welcome Judy Simon and Dr. Angela Thyer back to the podcast to talk all about their brand new book, Getting to Baby. Dr. Angela is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist, and Judy is a registered dietitian nutritionist who specializes in reproductive health. They've developed a practical, food-based fertility blueprint that helps fertility patients improve their odds of success and shorten their time to pregnancy. If you've heard me talk about assembling your fertility TEAM, you know that E stands for “exercise and nutrition.” What you fuel your body with during this journey makes a difference, and based on Dr. Angela and Judy's work, that difference can be huge. They've already helped thousands of women who were struggling with infertility thanks to this blueprint, and I know they're going to help so many more with this book. Getting to Baby makes it easier to understand exactly what to eat and how to make those dietary changes in a simple, straightforward way with the science to back it up. During our conversation, we talked about: How food supports fertility The research-based science behind their plan Using food to support specific fertility diagnoses, like PCOS and endometriosis Practical tips and ways to make this transition easier Their course, Food for Fertility If you're looking for things that you can do yourself to create a more supportive lifestyle around your fertility goals, with the science and results to prove they actually work, this is an episode you don't want to miss. Last year, a week's worth of groceries cost the average family of four eight percent more than in 2022. Food First N.L. CEO Josh Smee joined us in studio for more analysis.
Rising food prices in NL cause some people to cut back on spending - and food banks are busier than ever. Recent data from the provincial government show that a basket of nutritious food cost the average family of four $333 per week in 2023. That's eight per cent more than in 2022. Costs were even higher in rural and northern areas. Food First NL argues that these numbers show social supports aren't keeping up with the cost of living. Josh Smee is the CEO.

First, we'd like to apologize for the joke that starts this episode. This is what happens when good vegetables go bad…. ;) In this delicious snack, Ruby and Anne are chatting with Judy Simon and Angela Thyer about their new book, Getting to Baby: A Food-First Fertility Plan to Improve Your Odds and Shorten Your Time to Pregnancy. If you are considering starting or building your family, it's great for everyone involved to get in their best possible health, whether you'll be carrying the child or not! And this plan can help everyone attain optimal health. Get your answers to: What is a “food-first approach” to fertility, and does it actually help? How do nutrition and lifestyle affect fertility? Is nutrition a one-size-fits-all? (spoiler alert: no.) Should I focus more on plants? (spoiler alert: probably) Are you all about weight loss? (nope) And so much more. One thing we love about this plan is that it focuses on making progress, not on being perfect. And there's no shame here: nutrition can be challenging, especially when life is busy. But the great thing is even small improvements can yield great, noticeable benefits. Cooking and eating well don't have to be stressful, and that's what this book is all about. Let Angela, Judy, and your own body guide you to explore new foods and reach your health goals! As always, we hope you'll share this episode with anyone who could benefit! I've always thought that magnesium is every menopausal woman's best friend. It's a magnificent mineral and a mega multitasker. So it really does deserve a whole episode of The Happy Menopause! I've invited magnesium expert Andrew Thomas to talk us through everything you need to know about this marvellous mineral. Andrew is the founder of Better You, which is one of my favourite supplement companies. He founded the business in 2006, and it was the first company in the world to commercialise transdermal magnesium therapy and to develop the delivery of nutrients via an oral spray. We had a great chat about vitamin D in Season 4 (worth a listen if you haven't found it already) and he's back to share his wisdom about magnesium. This episode is a real magnesium masterclass, as Andrew explains the 300+ roles of magnesium on the body, why we might be low in it and how magnesium depletion could be the root cause of a number of symptoms. We also discuss the different forms of magnesium in supplements and Andrew explains the difference between oxides, malates, glycinates, sulphates and citrates and why certain forms may suit some people better than others. It's truly fascinating! We discuss dosage, because supplements need to be treated with respect, especially if you're on medication or have any medical conditions. And of course we discuss which foods you need to focus on to boost your magnesium levels, because ‘Food First' is always going to be my mantra for any therapeutic nutritional approach! Tune in – this is an incredibly helpful episode!Check out the full Show Notes for this episode on my website www.well-well-well.co.uk/podcast, where you'll find all the relevant links and references for my guest. The full interview with Rev Dele is available with Spanish subtitles on the Cultivemos YouTube channel.Description:We have to reimagine our relationship with the land.Farmers are experiencing a crisis of land access. The number of farms is decreasing and the cost of farm real estate has nearly doubled in the past decade, shutting out many prospective farmers. That's especially true for BIPOC farmers: 98% of farmland is owned by white landowners. With better land access, farming would be more sustainable, achievable and diverse. Without it, farmers can't farm. But there's another harm that's hidden within the crisis of land access. It's harder to measure, but no less important. With land out of reach, fewer and fewer people have a relationship with the earth. That means, fewer and fewer people are getting the healing benefits of land: wonder, refuge, calm, even wealth and liberation. To move forward, we have to reimagine our relationship with the land.So on today's episode, we speak with two people who are committed to creating relationships with the land. Danielle Peláez is the Education Coordinator at Soul Fire Farm. Through their programming, they create opportunities for Afro-Indigenous people to forge lasting relationships with the earth. Rev Dele is a Black, Indigenous minister, who is teaching the church how to model sustainability.
Food is not the solution to poverty. It is, however, the first step toward a self-sufficient life. When hunger comes off the table, the ability to focus beyond the current crisis becomes clearer. When food is available, worry is replaced with comfort. Over 50% of the food our network distributes is fresh and whether it is a box, bundle, or bag it provides hope. That's the power of food. On today's episode of Food First, we talk about the power of food and the impact it has on people faced with scarcity.
In this episode I discuss the importance of "food first" in eating disorder recovery; what it is, how to implement and my own experience with this approach. I also answer a listener question about mental hunger when physically full.
Improving Life for Michigan Families Increasing the Michigan Agricultural Surplus System line item is an important investment we need to make in MI farmers and the families who are struggling. The faces of the individuals in need of food are changing. They are often in and out of food security, have enough for most of the month, but need help for a short time. Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet came to Lansing to get things done by passing bills that impact all of us, especially the families served by MI's food banks. EITC, MASS, and economic development are some of her priorities. Check out this week's edition of Food First for an important conversation about these issues with Senator McDonald Rivet.
