As we mature into adults, we often get messages, directly and indirectly, that we are not creative. But you are! Everyone is creative! It's a skill and a way of being that can be cultivated. Think about how to recover your creativity and live your life more creatively! ----------------------------------------------- Welcome to Ever Better Today: the daily podcast for creating your optimal business, career, or overall life in ten minutes or less. I'm Lisa Conners Vogt, Executive and Leadership Coach and founder of Ever Better Coaching and Consulting. Let's jump in! ----------------------------------------------- From The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron “Many of us find that we have squandered our own creative energies by investing disproportionately in the lives, hopes, dreams, and plans of others. Their lives have obscured and detoured our own. As we consolidate a core through our withdrawal process, we become abler to articulate our own boundaries, dreams, and authentic goals. Our personal flexibility increases while our malleability to the whims of others decreases. We experience a heightened sense of autonomy and possibility.”  ----------------------------------------------- Live more creatively by… Thinking about how you can create options for your life each day. Be aware of how routine can help and hinder your creativity.   Doing something creative every day. This can include writing, painting, singing, playing an instrument, creating a garden, sewing, or anything else that gets your brain working in a free-flowing way. Identifying and executing solutions that are outside the norm. Actually executing your ideas rather than just talking about them. This becomes a habit and your creativity will build! Tips on how you can live more creatively from The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron… Write morning pages every single day. After you wake up in the morning, get your notebook, and a pen then allow yourself to write about anything for at least three pages. The more you create, the more you can create. At first, I was afraid of doing a podcast because I might run out of things to say but now I am on Episode 61 with a catalog of ideas that keeps growing! My friend Noelle Van Vlierbergen wrote the book, Sober Moxie. As she incorporated writing and creativity into her daily schedule, she created a journal for recovery, called the Day by Day Book. And then she created multiple versions of the journal, including one for teens. Check out her books at noellevan.com Another example is Pradeepa Narayanaswamy, the author of Loving Myself and You - Embracing your Perfect Imperfection. Pradeepa didn't view herself as a writer before but now she is known as one! And, she continues to write on a regular basis! ----------------------------------------------- To learn more about working with Ever Better, send me an email here or book a complimentary call with me here

Following her own struggle with infertility - labeled as "unexplained infertility", Pradeepa recognized the need for women and men to be supported in this emotional journey through infertility. She views infertility as a disease and wants to promote awareness of how much infertility is present. 1 in 3 women miscarry in lifetime 1 in 8 couples are going through infertility challenges The fertility industry is becoming a $20 billion industry - not just the clinics but companies ready to take advantage of the desperation of couples wanting to get pregnant.  She tried it all in her 12-year journey - hoping for a magic pill. She was stuck. Nothing worked, even after trying everything. The strain affected everything in her life. She tried traditional counseling, but that didn't seem to be what she needed. She was looking for something different. She doesn't promise her clients a baby as an outcome. She helps them get a good mindset to go into treatments, so the experience can be more positive. Men benefit from her coaching as well. She partners with doctors and clinics to offer 1/2 day workshops, mainly targeted for women just starting the fertility journey. Helps then get the right attitude from the start.

2-Minute Talk Tips

2-Minute Tip: Identify Your Biggest Take Away   To deliver an effective presentation, first identify the biggest take away for the audience. If they remember only one thing, this is the thing it should be.   To figure that out, start by doing a brain dump on a piece of paper or whiteboard. Then go through all theses random ideas that are in someway related to your topic. What stands out? Which ideas are most important? What themes keep popping up?   As you do this, you'll likely discover the big idea for your talk. Once you have that, you can begin building everything else.   Post Tip Discussion: Meet Julia Wojnar   In the theater you have to know your part and how your role fits into the rest of the show. You have to know your lines and be rehearsed.   Speaking is similar. You have to know your purpose. Why are you speaking? What is your role in this meeting? What is the purpose of your talk in the larger event or conference? What are you meant to accomplish.   You have to be prepared and rehearsed to be effective. Unlike theater, you don't need to have your talk memorized word for word, but you do need to know your content.   That's what the prep work is all about.   Today's guest, Julia Wojnar comes from a theater background which helps her be an effective Public speaking trainer through her company, Unleash Your Presence.   In this conversation we talk about theater, working through nerves, identifying your purpose and speaking in different cultures.   Crazy 8s   One reason we get anxious before speaking is that our bodies don't really know how to deal with it. Evolutionarily, we are not optimized for standing in front of a group of other human animals and having the focus on us. Our fight or flight instinct kicks in. Adrenaline pumps. Muscles tense. Secondary biological processes may shut down. Muscles tense to spring into action and survive.   But it's all unnecessary. There is no threat to our lives. We're not about to be kicked out of the tribe. We need to rechannel that energy and deal with it.   Pradeepa Narayanaswamy recommended changing your language. Don't tell yourself you're anxious or nervous; tell yourself -- and others -- you're excited. And it's great insight because excitement and anxiety often feature similar physiological symptoms.   Julia offers another great way to deal with the anxiety -- the Crazy 8s (though it could use a less ableist name).   This is exercise comes from Julia's theater background where it can be a valuable warmup exercise for actors as they burn off their excess energy and get ready to wow the audience.   Take a look at the video below to learn more.   [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NANGMbz5-Gk[/embed]   Billy Mays   I mentioned Billy Mays in this episode. If you're not familiar with him, Billy Mays was the quintessential TV pitchman of the 90s and 2000s. 2-Minute Tip: 3-Fer   This week's tip comes from our special guest, Pradeepa Narayanaswamy and is a 3-pack of tips.   Wear comfortable clothes. That doesn't necessarily mean loose. It means clothes in which you feel comfortable and powerful. Practice power poses and do vocal warm ups before going on stage. You can check out Amy Cuddy's work for more details on poses. For vocal exercises, go ahead and make sounds and loosen up to get comfortable. You can even step into the bathroom before you speak to do this. Bonus: you may end up with an entire public restroom to yourself as you make theses sounds to loosen up. When someone asks if you're nervous, say instead, "I'm excited." Even announce on stage how excited you are. The body responds similarly to nervousness and excitement so embrace the mindset that best prepares you for success.   Post Tip Discussion: Meet Pradeepa Narayanaswamy   Pradeepa is a corporate trainer, speaker, and fertility coach whose mission in life is "to help men's women's, and couples' infertility journey suck less."  We talk about how she group up in the public speaking world, first learning by watching her father, and later being coached by him when she entered the world of competitive speech. She developed a natural rhythmic style that came through as we spoke. It's one of the things that makes Pradeepa a compelling speaker.  She brought those skills to her new found passion as a fertility coach. This is not a journey anyone seeks out. It's the result of her own, long struggle with infertility. She talks about the details and heartbreak of these struggles over at the Biz Babes with Soul podcast.   Conferences have played an important part in Pradeepa's evolution from developing new skills and understanding around the importance of listening to giving her an opportunity to experiment with branding and publicly embracing her new identity.  We also talk about the challenges of talking about a subject many folks don't want to talk about publicly, and how Pradeepa benefited from doing just that. So take a few minutes this week, and get to know the fascinating Pradeepa Narayanaswamy.   This week's links   Pradeepa's Coaching Site -- Lives-Transformed.com Pradeepa's interview on Biz Babe's with Soul Pradeepa's LinkedIn article "Claiming My Niche" Pradeepa on Twitter Amy Cuddy on TED   Call To action   What are your thoughts on this week's episode? Pradeepa Narayanaswamy's journey began with an opportunity to coach in a professional setting. "I loved my role and enjoyed helping colleagues and providing the coaching support they needed for career and personal challenges.  I fell in love with coaching. Then…. My biggest life challenge showed up…. Infertility." In her words... My journey was long, 3 miscarriages, 3 failed Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI) treatments, 8 back-to-back In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments and absolutely no answers to why. “Unexplained infertility” wasn’t really an answer to anything.   By this time I have decided to expand my reach into Life Coaching for clients outside of my workplace as well.  I didn’t have a specialty identified. A friend asked me last year at a conference about my “thing” in life coaching. I didn’t have a good answer. Do I want to be a Minority women coach, Fertility coach, Adoption coach, or all of them???  I did an experiment at the conference where I introduced myself to new people as one of these personas. ONLY when I talked about infertility, my heart was beating fast, I had butterflies in my stomach and my body felt a tingle! There I knew it!!! I am a Fertility Coach!!! That’s my purpose in life! That’s why I was born!  My experience opened my eyes to the extreme need for support and service to this community of people that are experiencing infertility and going through this process.  The process that no one wants to talk about or even knows what to say.  It was like a lightning bolt!!   Fast forward to the present - I am proud to report I have a beautiful son, Kartik that my husband and I adopted. We are truly blessed to have him in our lives. Infertility can take us in many paths. My path led us to adopting Kartik. Yours may be different. Are you ready to find out? Pairing is a common concept for development teams: two developers working to produce superior code together. While their pairing role may change (e.g. from driver to navigator, etc.), it's generally assumed that pairing is only useful within development teams, but couldn't it be useful elsewhere as well? Pradeepa Narayanaswamy has been pioneering an approach to pair testing within Agile teams and also external stakeholders that provides each individual in the pair a new perspective of the application being developed and iterated on. Pradeepa shares with Agile Amped her experience of working with a salesperson to gain a new perspective on how customers actually use the application. The result is quicker, more valuable feedback that the developer can use early in the development cycle while it is still cheap, rather than late in the cycle. As an Agile Coach, Trainer and Consultant, Pradeepa Narayanaswamy is a self-proclaimed “Agile Passionista” who strongly believes in the agile principles used in transforming organizations to build superior quality products.
