Today, we'll sit down with acclaimed actress Glenn Close. Close has won Tonys, Golden Globes, and Emmys for her work on screen. You probably know her best from movies such as Fatal Attraction, 101 Dalmatians, The World According to Garp, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs, The Big Chill, The Wife, and Hillbilly Elegy. She's also possibly the most interesting actress working today. We'll talk about how she grew up in the midst of what she calls a cult, how mental illness has touched her family and her work championing productive ways to talk about it through her organization, Bring Change 2 Mind. And of course, her renowned career. Specifically, we'll talk about her work in Hillbilly Elegy, directed by Ron Howard, where she plays Mamaw, the fierce matriarch of a scarred family, and in The Wife where Close plays a famous novelist's wife who's constantly shadowed and diminished. [ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 2012 and the nominees are: 1. Michelle Williams - My Week with Marilyn 2. Viola Davis - The Help 3. Rooney Mara - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 4. Meryl Streep - The Iron Lady 5. Glenn Close - Albert Nobbs - In 2012 Meryl Streep won her third Oscar (second for Lead Actress) playing Margaret Thatcher in The Iron lady. She swept award season with this performance. Weinstein's angle during the campaign season was that Meryl hadn't won since Sophie's Choice- she was over due. This award seemed to be in the bag for Streep until Viola Davis showed up to the table with her incredible performance as Aibileen in The Help. A role she would later express regret toward due to the film's white saviour narrative. White saviour narrative aside - it's a heartbreaking performance and a real contender for this Oscar. Rooney Mara made her Oscar debut in the Hollywood version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The original role was played by Noomi Rapace. Michelle Williams played Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn; which she won the Golden Globe for. Glenn Close received her 6th Oscar nomination for playing Albert Nobbs, a woman disguised as a man trying to survive in 19th century Ireland. Very strong year! Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Fiona O'Brien as they discuss.

The year is 2012 and the nominees are: 1. Jessica Chastain - The Help 2. Melissa McCarthy - Bridesmaids 3. Bérénice Bejo - The Artist 4. Janet McTeer - Albert Nobbs 5. Octavia Spencer - The Help In 2012 Octavia Spencer won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The Help. The famous line ‘eat my shit' is hilariously iconic and makes me laugh to this day. Jessica Chastain was also a first time nominee for The Help (maybe a third time for The Eyes of Tammy Faye?). Janet McTeer gave one of my favourite performances in Albert Nobbs opposite Glenn Close playing, what I would assume, would be described as a trans man in our modern day. Bérénice Bejo was nominated for a recent fav ‘The Artist' playing a new movie star with the introduction of ‘talkies' during the early 1930's. And of course Melissa McCarthy's performance was nominated for her hilarious work in Bridesmaids (no! Megan no!). Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Rob Browne as they discuss.

Julie Lynn formed Mockingbird Pictures in 1999, with Bonnie Curtis joining in 2012 after more than 15 years working with Steven Spielberg. Together they produce film and television across a wide variety of genres, with movie budgets that range from under $1 million to over $100 million. They have produced for brand-new filmmakers as well as experienced, award-winning directors. Julie worked as a First Amendment lawyer before embarking on a film career as a creative executive for producer Mark Johnson.. They first partnered under the Mockingbird Pictures banner after producing the Academy Award®-nominated Albert Nobbs in 2012. They are still thinking about what non-profit work they are going to cook up together after they retire from filmmaking … but they are hopeful that day is still many years away. They are most proud of all the “repeat customers” amongst their collaborators, as well as the fact that they were able to successfully take their families on a joint vacation, because they clearly don't see enough of each other at work. This week, Bonnie and Julie shine on light on: Creating a producer's group Putting trust in your filmmakers How their unique partnership functions

This week, we are joined by Matt Nisenoff from Politipod as we watch An American Carol, a disaster of a "patriotic" riff on A Christmas Carol starring Chris Farley's brother, Kevin, and Kelsey Grammer as Patton. It's a real doozy from the newly conservative third of the team that brought you Airplane! and The Naked Gun - oh, how the mighty have fallen, or at least, began creating patronizing conservative comedy. Topics include golf with Kevin Sorbo, what character looks the most like Albert Nobbs, all the terrible, insulting jokes of this movie, and why you should just see Albert Nobbs instead. We love you! The GREENLIGHT Review by Ann Elder and Les Roberts of the film "Albert Nobbs."
How audiences respond to the body on stage and on screen. This presentation will seek to explore how audiences respond to the body on stage and on screen. We will explore the concept of ‘liveness’ and question how the physical presence of an actor alters our expectation of a cinematic/ theatrical event. We will touch on spectator theory, in both theatre and film, briefly explaining the key theories and concepts in relation to this. Finally, we will apply this to a practical example, using the play The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs and the corresponding film to explore what all this theory means in practice. We will conclude by offering up for discussion the question of to what extent we apply ‘theatrical’ or ‘cinematic’ modes of interpretation when we look at bodies in real life.

Dramatist Robert Holman's triptych of plays Making Noise Quietly has just received a new London production.

Oscars Shmoscars. Who wants to sit around and golf-clap to fancy Best Picture winners like The Artist when you could watch and discuss Fatal Attraction and Fear instead?! Clearly, J and K have decided to take the road less traveled this year. In fact, it may not even be a road... but a Choose Your Own Adventure masturbatory roller coaster ride with Glenn...we mean...Albert Nobbs! Either way, it's a truly harebrained ride on the good ol' podcast crazy train. We discuss the merit (or lack thereof) in cheating on your wife with a comparatively hideous Medusa-haired man-troll, how to pick up on girls with wide foreheads in 90s rave clubs a la Mark Wahlberg, and (most importantly) HOW TO INCLUDE ALBERT NOBBS IN ALMOST EVERYTHING. Seriously. That chick/dude is *everywhere.* This episode is rated 'R' for some salty language and some even saltier Julia Childs impressions.
Myq Kaplan ("Last Comic Standing") and Samm Levine ("Freaks & Geeks") join Cole and Vanessa for an hour of straight-up Academy Awards talk! The four get Extremely Loud & Incredibly close as they make their predictions of who will and should win those gold statuettes, try to make sense of Tree of Life, argue about Hugo, mention Drive a lot, giggle at Albert Nobbs, break the silence of The Artist, and "Descendants" into madness as they give out some special awards of their own. Let us know your special Oscar award (any sort of recognition you'd like to give to something from film this year that wasn't nominated) on our website for a chance to win the Entertainment Weekly Oscar issue signed by Myq, Samm, Cole and Vanessa!
This is exciting! On this special BONUS minisode (it's short for "miniature episode," friends), Julie discusses the 2012 Academy Awards with New York Times reporter DAVE ITZKOFF and cinephile GARY THA SQUIRREL, who came to the New York Times building in a Wawa bag toted by TOM SCHARPLING--- just to talk about Oscars, Oscars, Oscars! Join Gary, Dave and Julie in a respectful roundtable discussion, during which they address burning questions from last night, such as: -Who got the worse snub: Scorcese or Albert Brooks? -Will "Community" get a post-Oscars Descendants bump? -Where was Tom Cruise during the majority of the broadcast? -What happens when Nikki Finke decides to be funny? -Can Billy Crystal be stopped from doing blackface? -Did Gary like Midnight in Paris? Does he have an anecdote about Diane Lane? Plus! Gary shares with us his three point plan to make next year's ceremony dazzle us all. And Dave hints at some tidbits from his book about the great film, Network! And, as an even bigger bonus, the great TED LEO wrote a brand new theme song to the show--complete with a tropical beat that will cause you to shake your maracas. Even you, Albert Nobbs! You want the mini-sode? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE MINISODE! But here it is anyway. Hooray! Host: Julie Klausner Guests: Gary Tha Squirrel, Dave Itzkoff Produced by Chris Spooner Original Artwork by Marcia Neumeier Special Theme Song and Incidental Music by Ted Leo Thanks to Tom Scharpling

It's a clip show-palooza this week, also known as an outtakes episode! The 48th episode of How Was Your Week features all-new content from Julie, who is still recovering from her "sore trote," and did not wish to infect new interview subjects with it, because she is a nice and civilized person. Therefore! This week's episode features never-before heard footage from four terrific guests: -PATTON OSWALT, who explains his opinion on whether inventors are weirder than magicians! -MIKE DAISEY, who reveals what Steve Wozniak ordered when they lunched together! -JOHN MULANEY, who reminisces on that insane "Breaking Bad" Season Three finale! and -TED LEO, who explains the origins of the How Was Your Week theme song! Also in this episode, Julie discusses her emotional takeaway from watching the major motion picture ALBERT NOBBS, how Walgreens integrates social networking into its mission of selling lube to people, Debra Messing's character's arc on SMASH, and how fun last night's HWYWLive show was. (It was extremely fun.) A fun episode for fans of the show both new and old!
