In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton explore a common challenge faced by first responders: feeling uncomfortable or unsure about how to accept praise when someone says, “Thank you for your service.” Inspired by a recent post in the Police, Fire, Military, and Families Facebook group, this conversation is for anyone who struggles to navigate these moments with grace and confidence. Why Accepting Praise Can Feel Uncomfortable: Understand why first responders often feel hesitant to accept gratitude, whether it's due to humility, guilt, or the nature of their work. Five Ways to Handle ""Thank You for Your Service"" with Grace: 1. Acknowledge and Accept with a Simple Response: Example: Respond with “Thank you, I appreciate that” or “It's an honor to serve.” Why It's Beneficial: Acknowledging the thanks shows appreciation without making the exchange feel awkward or dismissive. 2. Redirect the Praise Toward the Team: Example: Say, “It's a team effort, and I'm proud to work alongside incredible people.” Why It's Beneficial: Highlighting the collective work of your team shifts the focus and reinforces camaraderie. 3. Use It as an Opportunity to Educate: Example: Respond with, “Thank you—it's a challenging job, but it's worth it when we can make a difference.” Why It's Beneficial: Sharing a little about your role can help bridge understanding and foster a stronger connection with the community. 4. Internalize the Gratitude: Example: Take a moment to reflect on what their praise means, even if it feels uncomfortable in the moment. Why It's Beneficial: Recognizing that their gratitude is genuine can help you embrace your work's positive impact. 5. Be Humble Without Dismissing the Thanks: Example: Avoid minimizing their gratitude by saying things like, “I'm just doing my job.” Instead, say, “Thank you—it means a lot to hear that.” Why It's Beneficial: Validating their thanks makes the interaction meaningful for both parties. Why It's Okay to Feel Awkward: Learn why many first responders find praise uncomfortable and why it's normal to feel this way due to the nature of the profession. How Praise Reflects the Community's Gratitude: Understand how these expressions of thanks represent the community's appreciation for your sacrifices and contributions. Steps to Make These Interactions Easier Over Time: Gain insights into how small mindset shifts and practice can help you feel more confident and comfortable when receiving praise. Why This Matters: As a first responder, your work leaves a profound impact on the communities you serve. Learning how to accept gratitude gracefully not only honors the person offering thanks but also reminds you of the value and importance of your service. Listen now to discover how you can handle “Thank you for your service” moments with authenticity and ease. I recorded with my hubs about women, not just in the military, but in the special forces!HAPPY VETERANS DAY & THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!listening suggestion: listen with a friend and play a drinking game. One of you drink every time I say “badass” and the other drinks every time Patrick says “badass” and see who gets black out drunk first. Fun? Probably not. Ya I'm not endorsing alcoholism. I'm making fun of the absurd number of times we both used the word BADASS in this ep. This is a big one, folks: for our 50th episode (arguably), we're taking aim at Clint Eastwood's monster hit military biopic AMERICAN SNIPER. Is this an anti-war film, as Clint claims? Is it a glorification of military power? Is it either? Why does Chris Kyle's hat say "Charlie" on it? What is Bradley Cooper's whole deal? For real, though, we get into a lot of pretty heavy stuff on this one, and we're extremely smart about it. They say we're the deadliest minds-men in podcast history, with over 200 confirmed Good Points each. Listen and enjoy! IN THE NEWS Return criminal penalties for those who take advantage of disabled veterans or their families THIS WEEK'S GUEST Actress Julia Ling is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserves, has appeared on many popular television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, House, ER, Grey's Anatomy, The OC – but is best known for her role as "nerd-herder" Anna Wu on Chuck. After losing multiple military friends to suicide and battling her own depression after a training injury, Julia wanted to do more than raise awareness about the veteran suicide - she wanted to provide a solution. Thus was born Veteran Powered Films, a production company focused on empowering and engaging veterans in all facets of the entertainment industry via on-the-job training and mentorship with fellow military veterans. Julia joins Marine Corps veteran and actor Hiram A. Murray, who will star in Veteran Powered Films next project - an apocalyptic horror film called "Homestead." RAPID FIRE Veterans banners to come down - maybe for good U.S. veterans use art to help female Afghan soldiers who fled their country process their pain ‘Go beyond thanks:' New survey reveals we should do more than simply thank our veterans for their service Special Guests: Hiram A. Today we talk about the battle of Ia Drang valley on 14 Nov 1965, troops and veterans don't like “Thank You For Your Service”, US military gives Lockheed Martin $33.7 million to develop nuclear spacecraft, Space Force's secretive X-37B space plane is going back in orbit, the B-21 Raider's historic first flight, and the VA rolls out free healthcare for World War II veterans.
Radio Show Salutes Women in the Military I am celebrating veterans and active-duty military who keep us and have kept us out of constant harm's way, often at great costs. We are reminded that war is a part of human history. I aim to share varied war stories across age, gender, and race to include family impact and cultural legacies. The Vietnam War was my coming-of-age war. I became immersed in and confused by the concurrent war at home about the necessity of US involvement while at the same time grieving over school friends who paid the ultimate price. There were so many bold and untold stories. Today's story, although history, is her story as well. We will hear about women who decided to make history instead of reading about it. The Voices of Women in Vietnam is a replay of a weekly National Public Radio show called With Good Reason. When I first heard this show, it was such a heart tug I knew I had to share. It includes, in their voices, stories from wives, widows, nurses, and librarians who took off their white lace gloves and struggled culturally, socially, intellectually, and physically to build a foundation for our continued gender-based struggles today. So, brew a cup of tea, get comfortable, and be transformed by a story 28 years later. This show is dedicated to all women, your children, and your children's children. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, then and now.
Thank you for coming back for Season 2, which is all about HEALTH & HEALING. This episode is dedicated to all Essential Workers who kept us alive and worked tirelessly to figure out ways to keep our society going through the pandemic.THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!Horses, Mountains & Dogs will be our lens for those we interview and a gateway to health and healing in this second season of our show. Animals and nature help us get and stay healthy, and are also a great way of measuring how we are doing mentally, emotionally & spiritually, as well as physically. Often, the greatest healing available to us does not come through the hospital, but comes from the unconditional love and lessons available to us through working with animals and getting outside. In this episode, we interview Dr. Lauren Towle about her perspective on health, medicine and her unexpected experience of healing with animals. A self proclaimed "Chicken Mama," Lauren was surprised to learn that her lifelong dream of owning chickens was not only for her, but served her entire family in unexpected ways she never could have planned for. The chickens were exactly what she needed - and perhaps, in some form or another, they are what we all need!At the beginning of this episode, we have a 7 minute current introduction followed by the full length interview we did together in the fall. The Full length interview begins around minute 8 where I share my Get Fit with Your Dog spot!(**Full disclosure here - there are a few things I wish were better in this podcast, and one is that it is a bit confusing having two introductions! Another is that the music on the dog spot is too loud... Hopefully you made it to the show-notes for an explanation. I am reminded and would like to remind my audience that sometimes "done" is better than perfect, and that there is value in allowing ourselves to imperfectly release work when we recognize that we have done the best that we could with the time that we have. Try this affirmation on for size: "Even though it isn't perfect, I love and accept myself and am grateful for the opportunity to remember it is okay to be imperfect!" Infact, in some cultures, a knot is always left out of place to signify our humanity, which is imperfect, and point to the divinity of the universe, or God, who is the only one who can and will be perfect.**)But I digress from the amazing beauty and knowledge imparted in this interview. You will not want to miss us unpacking the stigma around mental health, chicken egg prices today, the immeasureable, unexpected gifts of the pandemic, talking to our children about death, workhorse mentality, grief as a universal experience, giving yourself permission, functional medicine, homeostasis and the general sickness that is so prevalent in many of our lives these days. Dr. Towle offers us hope, perspective and the beautiful possibilities available to each of us in healing the root cause, and the journey of discovering it.Thank you so much for listening! Keep coming back for more great interviews about how horses may heal us with Horses for Mental Health, among others in Season 2. In case anyone has not told you today, I LOVE YOU, and so does an animal or nature preserve near you. May you feel the fur and find yourself outside in fresh air today! If you would like to get in touch with Dr. Towle, you can find her in the following ways:@laurentowlemdtowlemd@gmail.comIf you would like to work with CatJust says "buy the book on Amazon!"Support the showUpcoming events:The 2024 Adventure Paradox Digital Course HOLIDAY PRESALEConnect with me here:www.catcaldwellmyers.com@catcaldwellmyersThe Adventure Paradox Podcast Page (Fb)
Listen to the rest of the episode, over 40 minutes, by joining the ITBR Cafe for only $5 a month! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom.com For the first time ever, Andrew is joined with a dystopian and war novelist, Zac Topping! Zac explains that his novel "Wake of War" was inspired by one question in the back of his mind...what would happen if America experienced a second Civil War? He didn't know his novel would be so timely since it was released right after January 6th, the COVID pandemic, and Trump's presidency. Andrew asks Zac whether his dystopian approach mirrors America's current political divisiveness? Then, Zac opens up and reflects on being a United States Army veteran and how his experience made its way into his novel. Zac answers so many questions that Andrew has about the military, including what misconceptions civilians, like Andrew, have about the military. Why are politics rarely discussed by military members, and what is meant by the word "comrade"? Zac even entertains Andrew's male homoerotic military fantasy and explains what it was like serving during "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." But, Zac is just getting started since their conversation continues on our Patreon where he talks for another 44 minutes with Andrew. He openly discusses what lessons he learned from the military and how his writing career is shaped by these experiences. Then, he provides an analysis of the phrase "Thank You For Your Service" and the weight that carries as a veteran. Dr. W.D. Ehrhart is a Vietnam veteran, poet, teacher, and essayist who was active in Vietnam Veterans Against The War and has written multiple volumes of memoirs about his observations of the war and his return to civilian life afterwards, beginning with Vietnam-Perkasie. He has been hailed as "the dean of Vietnam war poets" and "one of the major figures in Vietnam War literature." His work offers a blunt and often haunting look at the realities of war. His collected poems, on Vietnam and many other subjects, can be found in the volume Thank You For Your Service. (Included are the poems featured in this episode.)Today, Dr. Ehrhart joins to discuss how the Vietnam War destroyed the image of America that he had formed during his upbringing in small-town Pennsylvania and give some insight into the true nature of the war for both Americans and the Vietnamese. It is a powerful and important conversation about a period in this country's history that we might rather forget but need to confront head-on.An article by Nathan on the Vietnam War is here. Today's episode focuses on a very important topic, mental health. Tyler talks with Dr. Mark Russell, a Marine Corp and Navy veteran, clinical psychologist, educator, and founder/director of the Institute of War Stress, Injury, Recovery, and Social Justice at Antioch University in Seattle, about the need for a Behavioral Health Corps within the military. "The military has an opportunity to become a leader in the field of mental health and really eliminate the stigma in the disparity between mental and physical health. And if the military chooses to do that, I think we could see some advances in mental health that we can't imagine. So I'm hopeful that as the military goes, so goes society. I hope that that ends up being the truth there." ~ Dr. Mark Russell The MissionThe mission of the Institute is two-fold: (1) investigate, identify, and eliminate root causes for repetitive crises in military mental healthcare, and (2) end the cycle of crises by transforming mental healthcare policy and practice. Although special emphasis is given to the estimated 24 million members of the warrior class including their family members, and healers-the activities of the Institute will equally benefit non-military populations through the advancement of knowledge and understanding of traumatic stress-related injuries.Stranger at Home Film STRANGER AT HOME reveals WHY a harmful, 100 year-old policy perpetuates catastrophic PTS and suicide rates amongst our country's military community. The film offers an in-depth look at eradicating stigma and creating a National Behavioral (Mental) Health Corps as achievable and critical steps to end an unnecessary mental health crisis.STRANGER AT HOME contrasts the intimate stories of three Veterans — Mark Russell, Charles Figley and Steven Elliott — with their unified message, which is: mental healthcare reform is the most essential human rights frontier ahead of us, and that it's time for the American Military to take the lead role in this profoundly important movement.Thank You For Your Service DocumentaryAn investigation into the failed mental health policies within the US military and the deadly consequences to America's troops. Thank You For Your Service takes aim at our understanding of war trauma through the interwoven stories of four struggling Iraq War veterans and candid interviews with top military and civilian leaders. The film posits that from the moment someone enters the armed services, their mental health is as important as their physical well-being and that by the creation of a Behavioral Health Corps (BHC), services and treatment can be effectively streamlined and create long term accountability. Featuring interviews with General David Petraeus, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen, General Loree Sutton, Dexter Filkins, Senator Patty Murray, Gary Sinise, and Nicholas Kristof. Retired Navy Seal commander and human performance expert, Rich Diviney, shares the 25 attributes for optimal performance, while sprinkling in some seriously cool stories of his time as a Navy SEAL. During his 20 + year career, Rich completed more than 13 overseas deployments. As an officer in charge of training for a specialized command, he was involved in an extremely specialized SEAL selection process, weeding out extraordinary individuals down to just the elite few. During this process, he discovered what set the chosen SEALs apart and what makes a person more successful and thrive in life, comes down to attributes. True optimal performance goes beyond just skill. In his book, The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance, Diviney explains that skills are different than attributes. Skills direct our behavior in known and specific environment. They tell us how and when to do something but they're not inherent in us. Skills do not tell us how we're going to show up in times of stress, challenge, and uncertainty. It is in those times that we lean on our attributes. Attributes dictate how we behave, react, and perform; how we are going to show up in life. We are all born with all the attributes, but the difference in each one of us is the level of which we have each attribute. "Thank you for your Service" What do you want it to mean? “I'm appreciative of you being a volunteer and sacrificing yourself for our country”? What does it possibly mean to a veteran that has: -Immense stress -Experienced worst of humanity at a young age -PTSD -Struggles with depression -Grieving -Survivors guilt -Lost time/missed life occurrences -Relationship strains/divorce -Physiological or physical wounds -Social reintegration (distances themselves) -Relatability to society In Leu of Veterans Day, the team tackles this topic to help bring together civilians and veterans on a more human level. As a society, both should strive to reconnect as common people, instead of civilian vs veteran. Taking the time and getting to know and understand what veterans have been through can have amazing results on the common perceptions about military service and possibly help those veterans who are struggling with post military service. Challenges: What can you do different the next time you approach a veteran? To the best of your ability, attempt to imagine being in their shoes and ask yourself how would you want to be approached? Bob Barteck has made a career of public service as a firefighter, EMT, Disaster Medical Assistance Team Leader and in 2021, embracing a new role as Fire Chief in Wausau Wisconsin. Having known him since the mid 90's, I can say firsthand that he has a servant's heart and would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need. We discuss 9/11 and the impact it had on the country, specifically the firefighting and emergency response communities. He also talks at length about the time he spent working with DMAT on deployments to Houston and Puerto Pico and the lifelong friendships that were formed in those times of crisis. As most conversations do on the HHAUSA Podcast, we focus on Bob's love of archery and the outdoors and how it has helped him disconnect while working in a profession not immune to battles with PTSD.While the majority of our time is spent around Veterans and Active Duty Military, we want to take a moment to thank all the men and women across America who selflessly put on a uniform each day as First Responders, racing into harm's way to protect their communities. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Episode #107 - This Marvelous MEMORIAL DAY Motivating Monday, as we celebrate Memoria Day, we open with a little of Billy Ray Cyrus song Some Gave All. When go on to discuss evolving to challenge ourselves. Evolve is defined as develop gradually, especially from a simple to a more complex form. Challenge is defined as an objection or query as to the truth of something, often with an implicit demand for proof. Before we talk about today's history, I want to thank every military veteran and current personnel for keeping our country safe – THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! I also thank their families for sharing their heroes with us – We Are Grateful. Unfortunately, this 2021 Memorial Day also is the 100 Year Anniversary in America of the Burning of Greenwood (outside of Tulsa) Oklahoma known as Black Wall Street on May 31 and June 1, 1921. Also called the Tulsa Race Massacre, is said to be one of the single worst incident(s) of racial violence in American history. Destroying more than 35 square blocks of the district at the time the wealthiest Black community in America. It is funny because it is so hard for me to say United States of America because we are not a United country. Thank you @VonnettaLWest for your inspiring teaching. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY?
