Welcome back to Not A Bomb! — the podcast where we resurrect cinema's most infamous box office disasters and ask the burning question: is it a bomb? This week, the guys set sail for one of the most ambitious and accomplished films of the 21st century with Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Released in 2003, this sprawling naval epic follows Captain Jack Aubrey and the crew of HMS Surprise as they pursue a powerful French warship across the globe during the Napoleonic Wars. Despite earning critical acclaim, multiple Academy Award wins, and a passionate fanbase, the film never quite became the blockbuster franchise many expected. Over the years, however, Master and Commander has steadily grown in reputation, earning recognition as one of the finest historical adventures ever put to screen. But does the film deserve its status as a modern masterpiece? Troy and Brad dive into the incredible craftsmanship behind the production, from its obsessive attention to historical detail to its thunderous sea battles and unforgettable performances from Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. The hosts also discuss why director Peter Weir remains one of cinema's most underappreciated filmmakers despite a career that includes classics like The Truman Show, Witness, and Picnic at Hanging Rock.Hoist the colors, secure the gun decks, and join the chase as Not A Bomb celebrates a film that proves blockbuster filmmaking can still be intelligent, immersive, and endlessly rewatchable.Want to help support the show? The fastest way to destroy a great firm is to let standards slip while you scale. In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael Mogill sits down with Sam Pond, founder and managing partner of Pond Lehocky Giordano, to break down what it really takes to build a high-performing law firm without losing what made it great in the first place. From leadership under pressure to culture enforcement, delegation, data, and the real ROI of team retreats, this conversation is a masterclass in scaling without becoming bureaucratic. Here's what you'll learn: Why “take care of the client and everything else will take care of itself” is the only scalable North Star How to build a culture that holds under pressure (and what to do the moment you see slippage) What it takes to run a real executive structure, delegate at scale, and still deliver exceptional service The firms that win next are the ones that scale without surrendering what made them great. It's our first After Dark of the season, and we're revisiting a childhood classic, Dragonheart, as a bridge between April's YA month and our upcoming theme for May: dragons! Lätta ankar, kör i vind! "England is under threat of invasion, and though we be on the far side of the world, this ship is our home. This ship, is England." – Capt. Jack Aubrey

Ben and Rob dive deep into Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, directed by Peter Weir and starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany, and, of course, Russell Crowe (with even more Russell Crowe to come). They unpack why this film grabbed them so powerfully on first watch, why politics usually stay off the table for them, the incredible making-of craft behind the production, and the bizarre yet undeniable parallels between this tightly focused nautical adventure and today's sprawling mega-franchises.Why does this film hit so hard right from the start? How does such a contained story feel oddly aligned with modern blockbuster logic? What did the behind-the-scenes dedication achieve? New month, new theme. We're kicking off "CROWvember" with yet another failed franchise starter from the surprisingly-regularly-featured-on-F2F Russell Crowe. But this time, it's a classy, prestige play Oscar contender from acclaimed filmmaker Peter Weir that was, nevertheless, meant to hopefully kick off a cinematic series. Adapted from the long-running "Aubrey/Maturin" period war-drama novel series by Patrick O'Brian, 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a rousing 19th century naval battle action epic. But for all the excitement of ship vs. ship conflict, at the heart of the film is a story of loyalty, duty, and male friendship. In an era unfortunately dominated by displays of male toxicity, did we two dudes find something more admirable and aspirational in the friendship of the two dudes played by Crowe and Paul Bettany? And, do we think even a big Best Picture contender like this could really justify a blockbuster-like series of sequels? We discuss all this and more, as we set out to sail in the choppy waters of "CROWvember." Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd
This week, we discuss two films from American director Jules Dassin. The first is Topkapi (1964), a heist comedy based on the 1962 novel The Light of Day by Eric Ambler. The plot follows a small-time con artist who gets roped into helping a gang of international art thieves steal an emerald-encrusted dagger from Istanbul's Topkapı Palace, while he is simultaneously forced to spy on them for the Turkish police. The second is The Naked City (1948), a crime procedural starring Barry Fitzgerald. Shot almost entirely on location in New York City, the film depicts the police investigation that follows the murder of a young model. On this episode of Remainders, we watch the 2003 war epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Based on the series of novels, Master and Commander is a chase movie that goes much deeper. Russell Crowe plays Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey, and Paul Bettany plays Dr. Stephen Maturin. The Captain represents leadership and duty, and the Dr. represents academia and revolution. As they chase the elusive French war ship The Acheron, the two men both test and help each other during the Napoleonic Wars. Every movie in our current moment, regardless of quality, seems to have spawned sequels, prequels, and reboots; in this episode, we lament that the one film that we wish had been the beginning of a series didn't make enough money to do so. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Peter Weir's 2003 adaptation of Patrick O'Brien's novels, is rich, unironic, and inspiring; it's a study of leadership, the tension between technology and human skill, and the ways in which discipline and restraint yield more genuine emotion that what we see now, when people post about their “struggles” every thirty seconds. Join us for a conversation about a film that makes its viewers wonder how they would fare as sailors and that makes them think about the shortcomings of their bosses. The film is based on Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey / Maturin series; Master and Commander is the novel in which the captain and doctor meet. Send us a textWelcome aboard, hoist the mainsail, and batten down the hatches for this week's film, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany (and a bunch of other dudes.). This movie happens to be one of Rachael's all-time favorites and she is sure to remind you of this. Frequently. We also discuss a recent visit to America's oldest (and best) national park, Yellowstone, as well as what life on the high seas might have been like in the early 19th century. So come join us for some light discussion on super-volcanoes and amputations! And of course, try to answer the thematic question; could I survive?

All July is movies at war, a theme we're calling “GLORY & PROPAGANDA”. War films are movie genre that draws another specific sub-class of film that can also cross over with westerns. We're talking about what we like to call “DAD BONER MOVIES”. I guess you could say “Dad Flicks” if you don't want to be crude but what's the fun in that? Think about your dad for a moment. Think about the movies he likes. The books and shows he like. Now picture your dad with a boner. It's a lot easier than you think, isn't it? Peter Weir's adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's Napoleonic War era nautical stories seemed to come and go rather quietly. With Russell Crowe at the lead it made a few bucks but didn't inspire any sequels. “MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD” nevertheless found critical acclaim and a particular appreciation for the movie developing in hindsight from all the dads and their boners. They love this shit. Perhaps one of the all timer, underrated, more modern Dad Boner films and also kinda gay with Crowe and Paul Bettany looking absolutely wifed. That's just that high seas shit. Peace and love to all the gay dad boners out there. Oh, shit! We found a link to the movie but I bet it gets taken down quick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5syct99MvVw Subscribe to us on YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuJf3lkRI-BLUTsLI_ehOsg Contact us here: MOVIEHUMPERS@gmail.com Check our past & current film ratings here: https://moviehumpers.wordpress.com Hear us on podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6o6PSNJFGXJeENgqtPY4h7 Our OG podcast “Documenteers”: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/documenteers-the-documentary-podcast/id1321652249 Soundcloud feed: https://soundcloud.com/documenteers Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/culturewrought

We ran into a bit of a roadblock with the episode we originally planned to release this month, so we've decided to pivot. We're returning to the seas to cover Aubrey/Maturin from Peter Weir's 2003 Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Between an unexpected topic and no episode at all, this was truly the lesser of two weevils.Follow the show on Tumblr at ltbkpod.tumblr.com

Russell Crowe returning to the historical epic genre at the peak of his post-Gladiator fame would seem a sure bet in 2003, and yet Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World met with a tepid box office response upon its maiden voyage. Despite being an exquisitely crafted adaptation of the beloved Patrick O'Brian novels and garnering several Oscars, the film failed to launch the hoped for franchise — though appreciation has grown for it over the years, particularly with millennials. Join Sebastian and Andrew as they hoist up the top sails and celebrate this high water mark of seafaring historical cinema.

NAVAL WEEK concludes with a highly acclaimed period seafaring adventure which just turned 20!Adapted from a series of beloved historical fiction novels from Patrick O'Brian, this film chronicles the journey of the HMS Surprise, a British seafaring vessel sailing across the Southern Hemisphere and in a continuous cat-and-mouse with the French Navy, this being during the height of the Napoleonic Wars in the 1800's. This ship and crew are lead by Captain Jack Aubrey played by Russell Crowe and the physician on board (and Aubrey's best friend) is Dr. Stephen Maturin played by Paul Bettany. We watch them embark on a series of adventures through choppy waters, blistering heat, conflict amongst the crew, and a continuous cat-and-mouse with a more intimidating French vessel known as the Acheron. Along the way, we get to know Jack, Stephen, and the rest of their spirited crew very well with every aspect of this story and setting being portrayed with an impressive level of historical authenticity thanks to director Peter Weir. This film received ten Oscar nominations including Best Picture, though it ended up losing most of them to the Lord of the Rings; Return of the King awards juggernaut that same year. So let's set sail and see if the weather gage....and Surprise....are on our side! ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
