Every movie in our current moment, regardless of quality, seems to have spawned sequels, prequels, and reboots; in this episode, we lament that the one film that we wish had been the beginning of a series didn't make enough money to do so. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Peter Weir's 2003 adaptation of Patrick O'Brien's novels, is rich, unironic, and inspiring; it's a study of leadership, the tension between technology and human skill, and the ways in which discipline and restraint yield more genuine emotion that what we see now, when people post about their “struggles” every thirty seconds. Join us for a conversation about a film that makes its viewers wonder how they would fare as sailors and that makes them think about the shortcomings of their bosses. The film is based on Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey / Maturin series; Master and Commander is the novel in which the captain and doctor meet. We're back to continue on our Rusty Crowe His-Trilogy, a peak into three Russell Crowe historical epics. This week it's 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, a critically lauded nautical adventure that didn't quite reach the audience it needs to warrent a sequel. Also featuring the likes of Paul Bettany, Billy Boyd and James D'Arcy it's well worth of look if this one happened to pass you by. Send us a textWelcome aboard, hoist the mainsail, and batten down the hatches for this week's film, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany (and a bunch of other dudes.). This movie happens to be one of Rachael's all-time favorites and she is sure to remind you of this. Frequently. We also discuss a recent visit to America's oldest (and best) national park, Yellowstone, as well as what life on the high seas might have been like in the early 19th century. So come join us for some light discussion on super-volcanoes and amputations! And of course, try to answer the thematic question; could I survive?

All July is movies at war, a theme we're calling “GLORY & PROPAGANDA”. War films are movie genre that draws another specific sub-class of film that can also cross over with westerns. We're talking about what we like to call “DAD BONER MOVIES”. I guess you could say “Dad Flicks” if you don't want to be crude but what's the fun in that? Think about your dad for a moment. Think about the movies he likes. The books and shows he like. Now picture your dad with a boner. It's a lot easier than you think, isn't it? Peter Weir's adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's Napoleonic War era nautical stories seemed to come and go rather quietly. With Russell Crowe at the lead it made a few bucks but didn't inspire any sequels. “MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD” nevertheless found critical acclaim and a particular appreciation for the movie developing in hindsight from all the dads and their boners. They love this shit. Perhaps one of the all timer, underrated, more modern Dad Boner films and also kinda gay with Crowe and Paul Bettany looking absolutely wifed. That's just that high seas shit. Peace and love to all the gay dad boners out there. Oh, shit! We found a link to the movie but I bet it gets taken down quick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5syct99MvVw Subscribe to us on YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuJf3lkRI-BLUTsLI_ehOsg Contact us here: MOVIEHUMPERS@gmail.com Check our past & current film ratings here: https://moviehumpers.wordpress.com Hear us on podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6o6PSNJFGXJeENgqtPY4h7 Our OG podcast “Documenteers”: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/documenteers-the-documentary-podcast/id1321652249 Soundcloud feed: https://soundcloud.com/documenteers Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/culturewrought

Russell Crowe returning to the historical epic genre at the peak of his post-Gladiator fame would seem a sure bet in 2003, and yet Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World met with a tepid box office response upon its maiden voyage. Despite being an exquisitely crafted adaptation of the beloved Patrick O'Brian novels and garnering several Oscars, the film failed to launch the hoped for franchise — though appreciation has grown for it over the years, particularly with millennials. Join Sebastian and Andrew as they hoist up the top sails and celebrate this high water mark of seafaring historical cinema.

Whew, that's a lot. I'll let you discover the rest of the story in this thrilling episode, with an ending that will change the Green Team's week forever (or at least a week). In This Episode Matt rolls for taco memory Dimetra checks her hands Quinn says “hello!” And June makes a deal for a friend Original music by Liz Getty
NAVAL WEEK concludes with a highly acclaimed period seafaring adventure which just turned 20!Adapted from a series of beloved historical fiction novels from Patrick O'Brian, this film chronicles the journey of the HMS Surprise, a British seafaring vessel sailing across the Southern Hemisphere and in a continuous cat-and-mouse with the French Navy, this being during the height of the Napoleonic Wars in the 1800's. This ship and crew are lead by Captain Jack Aubrey played by Russell Crowe and the physician on board (and Aubrey's best friend) is Dr. Stephen Maturin played by Paul Bettany. We watch them embark on a series of adventures through choppy waters, blistering heat, conflict amongst the crew, and a continuous cat-and-mouse with a more intimidating French vessel known as the Acheron. Along the way, we get to know Jack, Stephen, and the rest of their spirited crew very well with every aspect of this story and setting being portrayed with an impressive level of historical authenticity thanks to director Peter Weir. This film received ten Oscar nominations including Best Picture, though it ended up losing most of them to the Lord of the Rings; Return of the King awards juggernaut that same year. So let's set sail and see if the weather gage....and Surprise....are on our side! ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Welcome back! In the first new episode in over a year, I was very happy and enlightened with sit down and chat with my friend Dan Holder. When I asked Dan what story he would be most interested in talking about for RTF he quickly replied Master and Commander. As I learned, Master and Commander is a 20+ book series on the adventures of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. As such, we condensed the series down to watching the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World; starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. I absolutely loved this film and can't believe I didn't see it when it first came out. In this episode we discuss: The British fleet and what it meant to the British psyche The role of duty and how historical pieces help us view how people in the past had different mindsets than today Superstition at sea and how that affects people The beauty of the Galopagos Islands and how they engender a sense of secular spirituality in me Many other elements of the film and books. A big thanks to Dan in joining me for this episode, and stay tuned for more!

Ahoy hoy, shuffleheads! Today Remember Shuffle takes a look and 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, the first entry in the best franchise that never was. To help us analyze this film, we are joined by Everett Rummage of the Age of Napoleon podcast. We discuss the uniqueness and out-of-place nature the film in the decade, how this film runs on vibes, the historical authenticity of the film, and why its failure to generate more than 200 million dollars in revenue doomed it to irrelevancy. We also discuss the a whole host of Napoleonic age topics ranging from the alcoholism of its political and military leaders, the contrast between wonder and enlightenment and the destruction of near-total war, and its totally alien views on masculinity--alright lads, Ship shape and Bristol Fashion! This film reminded Sean of why he loves films. Lasse Vogt from 'Fans About Films' is back! My Guest: Lasse Vogt- https://podcasts.apple.com/ye/podcast/fans-about-films-podcast/id1374618646 Discussion Points: -The Review It Yourself audience are clearly loving Lasse's episodes. -Lasse has pulled it out of the bag for this -This film reminded Sean of his love for films. -Sean hopes this film will be retroactively looked upon as the masterful piece of cinema that it is. -CGI is an understandable choice sometimes. -Sean and Lasse mix up the young actors who played Voldemort. -Sean brings yet more British soap trivia-this time from EastEnders. -The conversation takes on a much more serious tone to discuss the nature of survival at sea, and the lack of food. -The similarities and differences between this film and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). -Sean was reminded of how good films can be. -Lasse and Sean decompress from the serious tone of the film with some whale puns. Raised Questions: -Do you remember this film coming out? -Did Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) overshadow this film? -Why did this film get mediocre reviews? -Was this film advertised wrongly? -Has Sean got a Ron Howard thing going on? -Was this film Hemsworth and Holland showing their acting range? -Why did James Cameron give us an analogy of whale-hunting in Avatar: The Way of Water? -Why did many of the real-life crew who survived become recluses? -Did this film just fail to find it's audience? -What is it that Lasse feels is missing or lacking that special something that makes this special? Thanks For Listening! Trailer: FilmFloggers: www.filmfloggers.com Review It Yourself now has a Patreon! Choose from TWO memberships: -'Nowt Special' Side Series: This 'Nowt Special' tier gives you Exclusive Access to a (ANOTHER) side-series in which Sean watches older, classic films.... + other benefits. -Rewatch It Yourself: +All the benefits of the 'Nowt Special' tier PLUS -An even-more exclusive series, where Sean takes you through every Zombie film he owns (there's quite a few).
