On today's show we chat with Svrcina!Singer/songwriter SVRCINA mixes earnest balladry and adventurous electro-pop in the spirit of Sia and Ellie Goulding. Following her initial EPs, she garnered wider attention with her 2020 full-length, Elysian Fields. Born Molly Svrcina in 1996 in Detroit, Michigan, SVRCINA ("sur-cee-nah") sang in church growing up, and became passionate about music around the age of eight. Starting her career as Molly Hunt before adopting her family name, she moved to Nashville, got a manager, and a series of subsequent writing partnerships led to her signing her first publishing deal in 2009 at the age of 13. She released a handful of acoustic-minded pop ballads as Molly Hunt over the next few years before dropping the moniker in 2013. During that year, she released SVRCINA videos including a cover version of Imagine Dragons' "Bleeding Out" and her original Christmas song "The Difference." In 2014, she was featured on the Built by Titan dance track "The Darkness," and her debut EP Lover. Fighter. arrived in early 2016. An eponymous EP appeared in early 2018, followed a year later by the Hearing Colour EP. She also garnered attention behind the scenes, co-penning MOTi and Icona Pop's "Sink Deeper," and Sj and Joakim Molitor's "Live Without You," both in 2019. There were also collaborations with Robin Schultz, Lecrae, Hulvey, and Tommee Profit. With her most recent album release, 1200 Beats Per Minute, SVRCINA, again, showcases breathtaking vocals and mature lyricism while evoking the emotions of all who listen. @svrcinasongssvrcina.comchristianmusicguys.com@christianmusicguys.com

Latest Press Release. The article was written by Beats Per Minute; Larry McClain, October 4, 2024 "LA artist Mae Deline's debut album Whole Again is a 14-song delight, and her song “Hate That I Hate You” is arguably the most wistful and beautiful breakup song since George Harrison's “All Things Must Pass”… "Another standout from Whole Again is the hypnotic country ballad “She's The Enemy”. The streaming market for country music is about as wide open as it's ever been, with newcomers like Dasha shaking things up. “She's The Enemy” sounds every bit as authentic as Miranda Lambert (or even Emmylou Harris from yesteryear). "It should also be noted that Mae's visual flair is right up there with the two Davids (Byrne and Bowie). That's not surprising because she attended Cal Arts, the alma mater of film director Tim Burton. "Watch the video for “Hate That I Hate You” below, and find Mae's Whole Again album on your favorite streamer."

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mereki over Zoom video!Australian/English savant of purposeful pop Mereki releases her debut solo album Death of a Cloud. Created over seven years and three continents, in collaboration with a roster of the artists Mereki trusted most to bring this deeply personal and intuitively conceived material to life, the album is a look into the joy and difficulty of self-realization and finding the universe within, expressing this journey through music – Stream. The album release comes along with the news of Mereki signing with BMG. Proving her success as an independent artist, her progress will be furthered through the creative efforts of BMG along with her own label BunBun Records.Leading up to her album release, Mereki put out the singles “Presence” and “Twin Flame.” The creation of “Presence” stemmed from Mereki getting inspired by the guitars reverberating through the walls while in a writing room above the studio where Dhani Harrison and Graham Coxon of Blur were recording. After she began singing a melody that became the first verse, she shared it with Harrison, and then the two were motivated to work together to complete Mereki's composition. “Twin Flame” sentimentally arrived the same week as Valentine's Day as a hymn to kindred spirits. Her singles were met with praise from the likes of Notion, Beats Per Minute, Soundazed and Mundane Mag, as well as editorial support from Spotify's infamous Lorem playlist, making the artist's return her strongest streaming to date.At the end of 2022, Mereki and her Be Kind charity partnered with the Happy Baby Community for a Presents for Presence holiday fundraiser. The campaign helped raise money, awareness, and much needed supplies for asylum-seeking new mothers and their babies. Happy Baby Community provides a holistic approach to healing which includes long term support for both mothers and children.ABOUT MEREKI:Indie Australian/English artist Mereki creates pop with a purpose – vibrant musical worlds that share messages of transcendence and healing without sacrificing the fun. Now based in the UK, she first moved from her native Australia to the USA where she quickly found a home in the spiritually minded creative community of the east side of Los Angeles, collaborating with an impressive collection of producers, writers, and musicians as she refined her song writing and voice, laying the foundations for what was to come.Mereki began writing and releasing music with esteemed writers & producers Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, Caroline Polachek) and Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira). GRAMMY-nominated superstar producer Ariel Rechtshaid (HAIM, Vampire Weekend, Madonna, Adele) spotted her talent, prompting their collaboration, “Golden Boy”, recorded by fellow Australian icon Kylie Minogue. She scored writing credits with Phantogram and Atrak, and guest artist and co-writer credit on tracks with Dhani Harrison, Goldroom, Basenji, Flight Facilities and Holychild. While fronting Goldroom, she performed everywhere from middle America to NYC to Bogotá, Colombia, before going on to perform with electronic act Flight Facilities as their featured vocalist on the duo's sold out North American tour.Kindness and magic are at the backbone of everything Mereki aims to be and be around in her music and in her life. She finds expression for her message in many creative outlets. In addition to music, she is also working on a record label, a children's book, a book of poetry and a collection of portrait photography. In 2016, Mereki created Mereki's Clubhouse, a pop-up event platform with a focus on kindness and creating spaces to give a voice to up-and-coming female artists. The Clubhouse motto “Be Kind” grew into a non-profit organization of the same name.Through all her work with and for others, Mereki found time to create her own music. Her debut solo single, “Blue Lake”, was released to critical acclaim from the likes of Spin, Nylon and Flood Magazine. After enduring some personal tragedy and heartbreak, she found catharsis in a brief foray into high-energy punk rock, releasing a few singles that landed her music in a Victoria's Secret commercial. In 2017, Mereki returned to the essence of who she truly is with the release of the Beach EP. The songs on Beach have Mereki's signature style, a distinctly pop-feel with positive messaging, while tracks like “Spiritual”, “French Kissing” and “Got It All” also hold an ethereal, dreamy quality.Mereki's return to music marks what has already been an extraordinary year for her, including her UK live debut at the legendary Glastonbury Festival 2022, alongside appearances at a host of UK festivals and headlining shows in London. We want to hear from you! Tramhaus - "Make It Happen," a 2022 single on Subroutine Records. Post-punk quintet Tramhaus provide a sneering statement on their hometown of Rotterdam, Netherlands on today's Song of the Day. The phrase "make it happen" serves as the city's official slogan — "a phrase which coincidentally functions as the absurd and out-of-touch city-slogan of Rotterdam," they state on Facebook. The accompanying music video was filmed in the Wielewaal neighborhood, and the residents who are set to be evicted. “Drawing further on what we believe is a misleading Rotterdam city slogan – 'make it happen' – we came up with the idea to make a video with the Wielewalers,” the band commented to Beats Per Minute. “With the video, we hope to show their struggle to a wider audience.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
June McDoom - "On My Way" from the 2022 June McDoom EP on Temporary Residence Ltd. Singer/songwriter June McDoom taps into her family history for her music: her parents relocated from Jamaica to New York City in the 1970s. As an adult, she began listening to folk artists from that era, like Joan Baez and Judee Sill, vintage soul from The Delfonics and The Supremes, and reggae artists her family listened to, like Alton Ellis and Phyllis Dillo. On her self-titled debut EP, she infuses these influences through a mix of analog and digital recording techniques. “‘On My Way' is about making my way through life while sharing it with another person," she told Beats Per Minute. "About how grounding and scary it can be to share a life with someone, while both working to fulfill life's passions and dreams. Living in NYC always feels like a journey just getting from one place to another and life can feel just the same.” "I recorded several versions of this song, with earlier versions at a slower tempo. Then one day I had an idea to try recording it one more time from scratch a little faster, after continually feeling like it needed something more/dragged a bit and it ended up fitting a lot better so we followed through with that final arrangement. With the tempo change of the final version, I wanted to also texturally mirror the message of traveling and working towards a destination with low and high moments."

This is episode number 104: Three ways to lift your mood (instantly). Welcome to the mindset for life podcast. This is Bethanie Hansen, your coach. And I'm here to talk about three ways to lift your mood. Why would you want to lift your mood? Well, there might be a reason; maybe you're going into a difficult meeting or conversation. Or maybe you're just trying to get through the work day and you can tell that your mood is low. Whatever the reason, lifting your mood is going to help you to perform better, and the things you do in work and in life. It'll help you show up in your relationships positively. And it will even help you feel great about yourself. Whatever is happening in your life, in your work or in the world at large. Lifting your mood can have beneficial outcomes for you. Strike a "Power Pose" So the first way to lift your mood is simply to stand tall, raise your arms in the air, like you're making a Superman shape, or even the why and the YMCA song and breathe deeply. You can stretch your body out in this way. And you can feel all your muscles stretching, and you can get some oxygen flowing to your brain. And that will help you to just move things along in your body and your mind. Breathing deeply stretching your arms out is an instant mood elevator. In fact, I believe it was Amy Cuddy, who did some research on this. And it's called a power pose. When you put your arms in this large Y shape or V shape, like putting them out in their full extended strength, it makes you larger, it also helps you to feel power. Physically, it tells your brain that you're in charge. And it can lift your mood instantly. If you're going into a job interview, or a difficult meeting, and you have a restroom or a bathroom, you could go into if there are people around, you could do this in private. And you could just breathe deeply while you have that going with your arms. And you've already taken it up a level. So you've lifted your mood with just one simple action called a power pose. Now, if you want a variation for that, one way I like to do this is to put my hands up in the air, my arms are straight, and I'm walking through a doorway. Because I'm five foot seven, I can touch that doorway easily. And I will just push my arms backwards just a tiny bit to even stretch them more. And it makes me feel alive and amazing. It's invigorating. And it also elevates my mood a little bit more. So there's your tip number one, lift your mood by stretching your arms all the way out and breathing deeply. Listen to Energetic Music The second way to lift your mood is probably my favorite number one way is music. Music can lift your mood and weighs almost nothing else can. Unless you choose not to listen to music, right again, do that because it's not reaching you anywhere. The the best kind of music, in my opinion, is 1980s Pop. And that just tells you what your I love. So certain 1980s pop songs I can put on and they bring energy to me no matter where I am or what I'm doing because of the beat. And because of the message in the music, so they're happy. And even if they're breaking up with someone or they're singing about a negative subject 1980s Pop generally has a positive vibe to it. So the beat is a certain tempo that enlivens your soul and just brings energy to you. You know, the beat of the music really does have something to do with the energy that you get from that music. You have a heartbeat that might be around 80 or 90 beats per minute during low activity levels or something like that. And if you start to exercise, maybe your heart, heart rates gonna go up to 120 Beats Per Minute 130. If you get music in that zone, and you just start listening to it, pretty soon you're moving faster, because it's pushing you to increase your physical activity. And it's helping you increase your heart rate just a little bit which of course brings you a sense of having more energy.
Second Date Update: How many beats per minute?
Amy: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. Today is our fourth and final episode on LGBTQ history and rights, with our essential texts being Obergefell v. Hodges, The Trouble With Normal, by Michael Warner, Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity, by Jose Estaban Munoz, and No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive, by Lee Edelman. Today we are going to discuss the last of two of those titles, and my reading partner is the spectacularly brilliant historian and teacher, Matthew Nelson. I'm so excited for this conversation with you today, Matthew! Thanks for being here! Matthew: Great to be back in conversation with you, Amy. Amy: Could you introduce us to the subject matter of today's texts, maybe starting as usual with some background? Matthew: Few communities, like survivors of genocide, understand what it is to face annihilation -- both as an individual and member of a group. I was just a boy when the HIV/AIDS brutalized the queer community, but as a student of history I try to read every book and watch every movie related to this extraordinary and tragic moment in order to understand better. David French's How to Survive A Plague, an emotionally arresting and informative book and documentary, most certainly ranks among my favorites to help me inhabit the experiences of gay men, who bore the brunt of the pandemic in the Long 1980s. I also obsessively watch Angels in America, Beats Per Minute, and The Normal Heart because I never want to be too far away from my community's brush with queer generational annihilation. I talk to all of my gay forefathers of San Francisco about this darkness. One of the common themes remarked on frequently in these conversations is the disenchanting experience of seeing crowds of young gay men ambling about the sidewalks like zombies -- emaciated and stumbling. They tell me they went to a funeral every week, sometimes multiple times a week. Their circle of friends -- vanquished in the span of a decade. I used to live on Alamo Square in San Francisco, and I would jog to the Castro, a historically gay neighborhood, to visit my gym. I passed an older African American man who sold beautiful flower arrangements on a street corner who would smile and wave almost every time I passed. One day, I saw another of these documentaries called We Were Here, and I recognized that one of the men profiled in this PBS film was Guy, the same street-side florist who waved me on as I made may way to the gym. The next workout, I resolved to stop and say hi to Guy. So, I did. He was delighted that I admired his contributions to the film. I asked him what it must have been like to sell the funeral flowers to attendees of all these funerals, and he said, “Business was never better!” with a chuckle. Guy elaborated on his stories of death and dying to me, of course with a dolorous tone. But, he wanted me to know that younger gay men like me have to remember that death is forevermore an important part of our history, and we cannot be afraid of death. Instead, and this is where his tone shifted to jubilance: “We have a FUTURE!” Queer theorist, Heather Love, characterizes this contradictory experience as “looking forward” while “feeling backward.” Guy's words reminded me of the concluding interviews with ACT-UP leaders Gregg Bordowitz, David Barr, and Peter Staley in France's How to Survive A Plague. The men say: Bordowitz: I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE, AND THERE'S PROBABLY A LOT OF COMPLICATED REASONS WHY, BUT I STILL FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE, AND/OR ACCEPT THAT I WILL HAVE A LONG LIFE. WHICH IS UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE I'VE HAD A LONG LIFE AND I'VE BEEN LIVING WITH AIDS FOR 20 YEARS. BUT IT'S HARD FOR ME TO RELAX INTO LIFE. Barr: I KNOW LOTS OF US WENT THROUGH REALLY DIFFICULT TIMES AFTER... UM, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT, WELL, WHAT DO I DO NOW? YOU KNOW. NOT JUST BECAUSE I DIDN'T THINK I HAD A FUTURE AND NOW I DO, SO I HAVE TO MAKE SOME...

2018 Official Oscar® Entry – FRANCE Best Foreign Language Film BPM tells the story of how a passionate group of Parisian activists goes to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS, taking on sluggish government agencies and major pharmaceutical companies in with bold, invasive actions. The organization is ACT UP – the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power – and its members embrace their task as a literal life-or-death mission. With more than 6,000 new diagnoses made each year in France, there is no time to waste. And yet, the officials and the corporations are not moving fast enough. “BPM” tells the story of that fight from the inside-out. Amid the rallies, fierce debates and ecstatic dance parties, intimate connections are made and vibrant life rages against death. As the activists scramble from boisterous street demonstrations and boardroom face-offs to dance floors pulsing with light and rhythm, Nathan and Sean’s relationship deepens. They confess individual memories of sexual initiation that are profoundly tied, in different ways, to the emerging AIDS crisis, and sexual intimacy itself becomes a kind of resistance. As Sean gets sicker, their passion sparks against the shadow of mortality, and the activist community of activists plots its most dramatic protest yet. Director and writer Robin Campillo joins us for a conversation on his intimate and thoughtful tale of activism and struggle in the face of intractable indifference and antipathy. 2017-06-06 Special EnglishThis is Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. Here is the news.China has celebrated its first science and technology day, which means it has only been one year since the country declared its intention of becoming a leading power in Science and Technology by the middle of the century.Things have moved pretty swiftly since.Jiaolong, China&`&s manned submarine, went quite literally to the bottom of the ocean recently. Scientists collected samples of seawater, rock and marine life, including sea cucumbers, sponges and starfish. The geological samples will help them understand how the trench was formed. In pursuit of the kind of quantum scientific leaps China needs, space is another frontier to be conquered. In southwest China, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope began scanning the skies in September. It is the world&`&s largest radio telescope. Its mission is to help scientists understand the origin and structure of the universe, and perhaps bring the search for extraterrestrial life closer to what would be an astonishing conclusion.Meanwhile, out in actual space itself, the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft, launched in October last year, carried two astronauts to the space lab Tiangong-2, where they remained for 30 days.In April this year, the Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft docked with Tiangong-2, refueling and resupplying the orbiting lab. This is Special English.China&`&s manned submarine Jiaolong has descended to 6,699 meters in the Mariana Trench, recording images of two swimming snailfishes. The mission, on May 30th, was Jiaolong&`&s fourth dive in the trench this year. The dive began at 7:03 a.m. local time and reached the planned depth at 10:21 a.m. where scientists worked for three hours and ten minutes.Jiaolong collected samples of rock, sediment, deep-sea life and sea water in this dive, and recorded images of two swimming snailfishes.Scientists say research on snailfish, a typical deep-sea species, deepens our understanding on the evolution of deep-sea fishes and their environmental adaptation mechanism.Jiaolong&`&s first dive of this year in the world&`&s deepest known trench took place on May 23, with a Xinhua News Agency journalist descending inside the submarine along with scientists to a depth of 4,811 meters. The second and third dives on May 25 and 27 reached depths of 6,300 meters and 6,544 meters respectively. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. U.S. President Donald Trump has called Germany&`&s trade and military spending policies "very bad" for the United States as tensions between him and German Chancellor Angela Merkel increased.Trump wrote on Twitter that the country have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO and military, which was very bad for the U.S. He wrote that this will change. The blast came two days after Merkel cast doubts on EU&`&s alignment with the United States and Britain, saying that Europeans should determine their own destiny.Merkel, addressing an election campaign at a beer tent in Germany&`&s southern state of Bavaria, said recently that following the election of Trump and Brexit, Europeans "really have to take destiny into their own hands".Merkel said "the times when we could fully rely on others are to some extent over".Although Merkel did not further elaborate the reasons for her unexpected remarks, many German media speculated that Merkel was referring to her frustrating experience at the G7 meeting earlier this week in Italy&`&s Sicily. The German leader described the summit as "very difficult, not to say very unsatisfactory".Trump and Merkel had a long history of disagreement that was previously focused on the two leaders&`& view on immigration. This is Special English. The daughter of a longtime confidante of the former South Korean President has been delivered to South Korea. The 20-year-old is on her way home to South Korea. She was wanted for questioning in connection with a major corruption probe in her home country. The daughter was arrested by Denmark&`&s North Jutland Police on Jan. 1. Her mother is charged with using her friendship with former president Park to extort funds from large businesses and meddling in state affairs. The daughter is alleged to have received illegal favors when entering a prestigious South Korean university. She is also accused of being behind economic crimes in collusion with her mother, which she denied.Initially, the young daughter fought against a local court&`&s decision to extradite her and appealed. On April 19, the Court of Aalborg upheld the extradition decision so that she can stand her trial in South Korea. She has dropped her opposition. You&`&re listening to Special English. Li Sun, former coach of Chinese table tennis super star Zhang Yining has replaced suspended Kong Linghui to take charge of China&`&s women&`&s national team at the ongoing World Table Tennis Championships.Head coach of the Chinese national team Liu Guoliang made the announcement as Kong had been ordered to return home from the World Championships. Liu and Kong won the men&`&s doubles gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Kong was suspended as head coach of the Chinese women&`&s team following a lawsuit over a gambling debt filed by a Singaporean hotel. The Singaporean hotel where Kong and his family had stayed in 2015 filed a lawsuit against him in a Hong Kong court. Media reports said Kong borrowed 1 million Singapore dollars, roughly 721,000 US dollars, from the hotel, but failed to pay back the debt in full. This is Special English. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has launched the standard gauge railway cargo train that is expected to ease congestion at the port of Mombasa. The Chinese Ambassador to Kenya and the President of the China Communications Construction Company attended the launch ceremony.President Kenyatta said at the unveiling of the train that it ushered in an era of fast, efficient and reliable transportation of goods. He said this is a historic moment as Kenya begins its journey of transformation, adding that his government is banking on the cargo train to hasten industrial growth and cross-border trade.Besides reducing the cost of ferrying goods from the port of Mombasa to the hinterlands, the cargo train will drastically reduce congestion in the highways and the environmental pollution.According to Kenya Railways Corporation, it will cost 500 dollars to transport a single container through the train when compared to 900 dollars by road between Mombasa and Nairobi. The president said expansion of Mombasa&`&s port and the operation of the train marked a critical milestone in Kenya&`&s quest to become an industrial and efficient trading hub. You&`&re listening to Special English. That&`&s according to a new study by Australian researchers at Murdoch and Griffith Universities. The study is funded by the Australian Research Council and is the world&`&s first long-term assessment of adolescent mental health regarding late night mobile phone usage. The study examined student&`&s quality of sleep, along with mood, aggression and coping skills. The process was conducted as an annual survey over four years and included 1,100 students from 29 schools. When the subjects began the process, they were in their eighth year of education at high school; and when the program concluded, they had hit year 11.The questionnaires focused on what time of the night students continued to receive or send text messages and phone calls. The study found that late night phone use directly contributed to poor sleep habits, which over time led to declines in overall well-being and mental health.Around two thirds or 65 percent of students in year eight who owned a mobile phone, reported to use it regularly after "lights out."You&`&re listening to Special English. None, however, measured energy expenditure well. The findings were based on an evaluation of the Apple Watch, Basis Peak, Fitbit Surge, Microsoft Band, Mio Alpha 2, PulseOn and the Samsung Gear S2 in a diverse group of 60 volunteers.Millions of people wear some kind of activity tracker and often share the data with their physician.Euan Ashley, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Stanford University says people are basing life decisions on the data provided by these devices. But consumer devices aren&`&t held to the same standards as medical-grade devices, and it&`&s hard for doctors to know what to make of heart-rate data and other data from a patient&`&s wearable device. In the study, the volunteers wore the seven devices while walking or running on treadmills or using stationary bicycles. Each volunteer&`&s heart was measured with a medical-grade electrocardiograph. Metabolic rate was estimated with an instrument for measuring the oxygen and carbon dioxide in breath, a good proxy for metabolism and energy expenditure. Results from the wearable devices were then compared to the measurements from the two instruments. This is Special English."The Square", directed by Swedish director Ruben Ostlund, has won the Palme d&`&Or of the 70th Cannes Film Festival. This film tells the story of Christian, a respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two girls.Christian&`&s next show is "The Square", an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. Meanwhile, the museum&`&s PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for "The Square". The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis."The Square" presents a satirical exploration of the art world, and was seen by many as an unexpected, but solid choice for the prestigious award. The Grand Prix, often seen as the runner-up to the Palme d&`&Or, went to French director Robin Campillo for "120 Beats Per Minute". Chinese art film director Li Ruijun was also present at the renowned international film festival, after his film "Walking Past the Future" was chosen as an official selection for the "Un Certain Regard" category. This is the end of this edition of Special English. To freshen up your memory, I&`&m going to read one of the news items again at normal speed. Please listen carefully.(全文见周日微信。)

The Great Kat must be worshipped. Media outlets who proclaim The Great Kat to be in the top 50, top 10, top whatever, are wrong. The Great Kat is the best, the fastest, the greatest. She is Beethoven reincarnated. This is not open for debate. You either 'get' what this means, or you do not. "Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason, mastery demands all of a person." -Albert Einstein Read the follow-up email interview below, after listening to the phone interview (the yellow/green play button is at the bottom). Fellow WSCA DJ Kim joined me in the studio for the interview. Email/Requests: blacknightmeditations@msn.com Playlists: http://wsca.radioactivity.fm/show.html?showoid=1242 BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Aural ruminations of Black, Death, Speed, Thrash, Doom, Folk, Shred, Power, Prog & Traditional Metal. Tuesday Nights 10pm-2am e.s.t. - WSCA 106.1 FM - Portsmouth, NH USA - Listen online live @ www.wscafm.org ***The Great Kat email interview - 17 Dec 09*** BNM - There were a few things we did not get to discuss during our phone interview. I'd like you to expand on the evolution of your music. Your first 2 albums, Worship Me Or Die & Beethoven On Speed, featured more of a Thrash influence, notably in the riffs. Since your brand of Shred/Classical hadn't fully developed to what it has been over the last decade, can you explain the influence that Thrash Metal had on your early songwriting? Your Metal influences were more traditional, so how much of an influence on your song-writing did Thrash have? Was it a product of the times? Were you at all involved in the New York Thrash scene of the '80s? TGK - The Great Kat High Priestess Of Guitar Shred (http://www.greatkat.com ) got into SPEED METAL after graduating from Juilliard. I liked the power and speed of that music. I decided to mix vicious, speed metal guitar riffs with my Classical Motives. The result was the first Great Kat CD “WORSHIP ME OR DIE!” with it’s RAW, VICIOUS SPEED METAL RIFFS AND CLASSICAL GUITAR SOLOS. The Great Kat’s NEXT CD “BEETHOVEN ON SPEED” was a pure mixture of SHREDDING GUITAR VIRTUOSITY with AUTHENTIC Classical Music from Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov, Chopin, Paganini ALL MIXED with POWERFUL METAL SONGS, like “ULTRA-DEAD” and “KAT ABUSE”! BNM - Much is said about your guitar playing, your violin playing, your image and so on, but I feel your vocals have always been vital to who The Great Kat is. Without those patented Kat shrieks, growls and unique delivery, your music would feel like a symphony without a conductor. My favorite Kat songs tend to be the ones that have the most memorable vocal delivery, especially when you mix the singing and shouting. Would you consider trying new vocal approaches that you have not used in the past? It would be tough to sing over the insanity, but you can easily do it and I want more of those catchy choruses! TGK - The Great Kat’s BRILLIANT music is a TOTAL MULTIMEDIA COMBINATION of CLASSICAL and METAL Virtuosity with SCREAMS, YELLS, BRUTAL SHOUTING and WILD and OUTRAGEOUS IMAGERY—this is the NEW OPERA of the 21st CENTURY!!! NOW CHECK OUT THE NEW “BEETHOVEN’S GUITAR SHRED” DVD: This DVD stars The Great Kat’s Guitar/Violin Virtuosity and finger-blistering guitar shredding of Classical masterpieces and original outrageously theatrical SPEED METAL Wagnerian Mini-Operas. “Beethoven’s Guitar Shred” DVD Features: 7 Outrageous Shred/Classical Guitar Music Videos, including: • “The Flight Of The Bumble-Bee” - At the finger-blistering speed of 300 BPM! • Beethoven’s “5th Symphony” - Metal version of the world’s most famous symphony! • Paganini’s “Caprice #24” – Kat dazzles on this technical virtuoso showpiece on guitar and violin! • Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto #3”- The Great Kat shreds on 6 guitars & 3 violins! • “Torture Techniques” – Watch Kat’s arsenal of Torture devices and abused victims! • Plus MORE Theatrical Metal Madness! 4 Shred BONUS Features: • Hot Kat Shred Photos! Shred Geniuses! Kat Kartoon – A crazy cartoon of The High Priestess of Guitar Shred! DVD Video Clips: http://www.greatkat.com/dvd/dvd.html BNM - Do you own the rights to your first 2 albums that were released by Roadracer? Those albums are hard to find, so a reissue would be great for those who have yet to hear your early material. What is the status of the Total Insanity compilation that features over 50 songs from your discography? It is not available on greatkat.com, nor is the Guitar Goddess ep. How can your worshippers get these releases? TGK - “Total Insanity” is NOT an authorized Great Kat CD and is NOT released by TPR Music. To purchase The Great Kat’s “Worship Me Or Die!” and “Beethoven On Speed” try Amazon.com. “Guitar Goddess” is on TPR Music, but is currently sold out. The Great Kat’s NEW “Beethoven’s Guitar Shred” DVD is available through major retailers (Amazon.com, Best Buy, Target, CDUniverse, Barnes And Noble) and through the Kat Store at http://www.greatkat.com/07/index07.html BNM - Your releases have been issued on vinyl, cassette, cd, and you even released a cd-rom in the mid-90s. Your last 2 releases have been dvds. You seem to want to stay with what is current in promotion, as your online presence has expanded to Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. Will we see any more cd releases, or has the current trend in promotion of music (that sees fewer cd sales) pushed you solely into dvd releases for the forseeable future? TGK - The Great Kat’s SHRED/CLASSICAL GENIUS MUSIC must be SEEN and well as HEARD—that’s why The Great Kat is concentrating on MUSIC VIDEO DVDS!!! Like Wagner’s Operas, you need to get the ENTIRE GREAT KAT EXPERIENCE to understand the REINCARNATION OF BEETHOVEN FOR YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!! There aren't many stations (terrestrial, satellite, internet) who are willing to support music such as yours. Those that do "feature" your work tend to be quite insulting and demeaning. Has this old-school method of promoting The Great Kat been worth your effort over the years? Is it still now? Basically, is any press good press for The Great Kat? TGK - RADIO IS OLD!!! The Great Kat needs to be SEEN to FULLY UNDERSTAND SHRED/CLASSICAL!!!! THAT’S THE MAIN REASON The Great Kat is PRODUCING DVDS!!!!!!!!!!! REVIEWS OF THE GREAT KAT: -"The Great Kat should be feared because her hyper-blasting, neo-classical, whirlwind guitar playing is so precise and intense. This woman really is a better guitarist than most men ever were. Beethoven’s Guitar Shred DVD is a portable clinic of seemingly inhuman guitar antics. Dominating torture, blood, fire, anti-terrorist sentiments – all wrapped in an oddly tasteful, hyper-classical visual feast." - Mark Morton, Heavy Metal Examiner -"The Great Kat named one of the fastest guitar players. Probably the fastest female shredder on the face of the earth. 'Flight Of The Bumble-Bee' at 300 Beats Per Minute. It does not get any faster than that. This ('Beethoven's Guitar Shred' DVD) makes a great stocking stuffer." - Michael Butler, MEVIO Music "The guitarist Katherine Thomas aka The Great Kat is ranked among the fastest metal shredders of all time." - Danny Kringiel, Spiegel Online (Germany) -"Blending the showmanship of metal with the intensive musical construction of classical, Kat has carved out a name for herself in musical history by shredding some of the greatest musical works of our time." - Carly Milne, AOL's Digital City BNM - How do you regard the composer Felix Mendelssohn, given that it's possible J.S. Bach's brilliant music may have been lost to the ages had it not been for Mendelssohn bringing back Bach's compositions to the stage? TGK - Mendelssohn did a great service to society by finding J.S. BACH’S MUSIC and BRINGING it to the masses! THAT’S THE SAME MISSION THE GREAT KAT IS ON—to BRING BEETHOVEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO DON’T EVEN KNOW BEETHOVEN’S GENIUS MUSIC!!!!!!!! BNM - You have been motivated to perform music composed by those you consider to be "geniuses." But can we expect The Great Kat's musical tribute to non-composer geniuses such as Galileo Galilei or our founding fathers of the U.S.A.? Certainly you can apply your Shred/Classical style of music in honor of these geniuses as well. Instead of wasting any more of your time on terrorist scum, how about expanding upon the Wagner's War theme and further celebrate our history, or composing music based upon our future through the eyes of the past? TGK - The Great Kat Guitar Shredder’s MISSION is to NOT only UPDATE CLASSICAL MUSIC for the MASSES, but to ALSO TALK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN THIS TERRORIST INFESTED WORLD—like on my songs “ISLAMOFASCISTS” and “TORTURE TECHNIQUES” from “Beethoven’s Guitar Shred” DVD!!!!!!!!!! BNM - Many of us Kat slaves would like to here much more of your violin playing. Personally, I'd love to hear solo violin pieces. Especially Paganini's Caprice no.1. TGK - The Great Kat’s VIOLIN VIRTUOSITY is heard on the NEW BEETHOVEN’S GUITAR SHRED” DVD—on “THE FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE-BEE”, PAGANINI’S “CAPRICE #24”, BEETHOVEN’S “5th SYMPHONY” and BACH’S “BRANDENBURG CONCERTO #3”!!!!! On the NEXT Shred/Classical DVD, The Great Kat will be SHREDDING one of THE MOST TECHNICALLY DIFFICULT AND DEMANDING VIOLIN VIRTUOSO PIECES ever written: NICCOLO PAGANINI’S “MOTO PERPETUO” on the GUITAR and VIOLIN, along with works of BEETHOVEN, MOZART and MORE!!!!!! BNM - Thanks for your time, Kat. I'd love to delve deeper into your psyche and find out more about you as a person, but I know if I tried you'd just pummel me into submission. Your boots would be cleaner, and I'd still have no answers. Thank you again for sticking to your guns over the years, and continuing on with The Great Kat's Shred/Classical supremacy. You have my support. TGK - THANKS MARK!! THE GREAT KAT IS THE METAL MESSIAH/REINCARNATION OF BEETHOVEN!
