Oftentimes when we get sober, it feels so good that we can get in the mindset of trying to save everyone! While our intentions are good, it's not often the best approach to just start berating everyone we see with a drink in their hands. But there is a way to spread the message that truly can help those in need. In fact, it's vitally important that we do this. This week we're joined by L.T. Weaver, founder of Recovering Addict to talk about spreading the message. LT is no stranger to this concept. As you will hear in his warstory, he's no stranger to the dark abyss of addiction either. L.T. always had a work hard, play harder mentality that had a negative impact on those around him. Luckily, today he has applied that work ethic to helping others and has a non-profit organization that's doing just that. Check out Recoveringaddict.org for more information on this program of recovery that has a bit of a different spin on it from your traditional twelve step recovery. Falling victim and feeling helpless is not about being weak or strong, but it is about self-awareness and making a mental shift to see what is possible. Stepping back and asking yourself, what is in your control and deciding how you want to respond is critical. Viktor Frankl says in his book, Man's Search for Meaning, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Danny Trejo, an actor and Hollywood Icon, joins me today to discuss a few of the stories from his new memoir, Trejo. Hearing these stories should remind you that it never matters where you are or how you start in life, it only matters how you decide to respond. Yes it's hard, yes all excuses and reasons you have to not try and give up are valid, but ultimately the choice is yours to make. Danny's story is beyond inspiring when you see someone come from a mindset and situation that consumes and devours over 90% of the people engulfed in that life. Which really means, anything is possible and your potential is nearly limitless. “It was a wake up. For me it was I either made a decision to change my life or not.” - Ed Chun Today you're going to hear from Ed Chun. He is a father, husband, entrepreneur and a recovering addict. For many years, he was a well-known member of the southern Oregon community - involved in politics, non-profits and the community's culture. Despite the success and notoriety, he became addicted to street drugs. 2 1/2 years ago, he was pulled over and charged with possession. In this conversation, we talk about how someone successful gets involved in street drugs, why recovery worked the second time when it failed the first time - and why he believes in brutal transparency. You'll hear how transparency and how "being average" has changed his life. CONNECT WITH DANIELLE: Facebook Instagram Twitter Website This podcast is brought to you by the Mail Tribune. He has also contributed articles about recovery to TheFix.com and Recovery Today magazine and has developed and presented a addiction lecture for churches, libraries and other groups. Author, The addiction nobody will talk aboutHow My ography Addiction Hurt People and Destroyed RelationshipsJoshua Shea seemingly had it all. A loving wife, two children, and a supportive extended family. In 2010, he launched a lifestyle magazine in his hometown. Within a year, he was one of the founders of Central Maine's largest film festival and had won a seat on his City Council. Accolades, including receiving the Key to the City and being called one of the "Next 10 People Shaping Maine's Economy" by a state newspaper followed. While the public got one picture of Shea, behind closed doors, his longtime mental health and addiction issues were festering. A workaholic by nature, he actively ignored the red flags surrounding his long-existing ography and alcohol problems. Finding it easier to lose himself in a bottle of tequila and adult websites, Shea's relationships with his family, colleagues, and friends grew distant. His business ventures began to collapse.Life as he knew it came to a screeching halt when he was arrested on a charge of underage ography possession in 2014. Shea was convicted and served six months in jail in early 2016. Following his arrest, he sought help and treatment through intense one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and at inpatient rehab facilities. He has been sober almost four years.Bothered at the lack of quality resources and open discussion around the topic of ography addiction, Shea is now sharing with the public his experience with the addiction in the hope he can help people to not head down the same road that he did.Shea recounts the last several years of his life leading up to his legal trouble and how his poor judgment and bad decision making led to a life he never thought was possiblewww.RecoveringAddict.com
Today’s episode of Stories that Touch your Heart has the second part of Lee Drewa’s story. The recovering addict shares how he got clean in treatment and has stayed clean for 12 years. Only a small percentage of those who are addicted receive treatment, and the number of Americans who die from drug overdoses continues to rise. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 64,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2016 from illicit drugs (like heroin, cocaine, amphetamines) and prescription opioids, which include: oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine, and methadone. A provisional CDC report shows the trajectory for drug overdoses continuing to climb in 2017. While the numbers seem bleak, there is hope. Individuals who get hooked on these highly addictive drugs can receive treatment. “Research shows that combining treatment medications (where available) with behavioral therapy is the best way to ensure success for most patients,” according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
