Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's July, so that means it's time for our “Julygantic” series! Where we cover monster movies! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Matt Naughton discuss Peter Weller's journey into what is effectively “Alien but underwater,” 1989's Leviathan! A terrible final one-liner! Aquatic basketball moves! Blue collar despair! Tonal collapses! A guy named Sixpack! Lots of random tubes! Cool clunky dive suits! Angry computer use! Disastrous butter-handling! "Dry for wet" underwater scenes! Hints of secret underwater affairs! Equal opportunity boss punching! Poor quarantine protocols! Someone opening a Pepsi can with their teeth! Questionable management training! Insufficient skiing knowledge! Fun and gross special effects from Stan Winston! A cast that includes Peter Weller, Ernie Hudson, Daniel Stern, Richard Crenna, and Amanda Pays! Crew members that worked on Terminator 2, Alien, Robot Jox, Rambo 2, Cobra, and Blade Runner! All that and more in this "diamond-encrusted trash" that is not only a great sea monster/body horror movie, but possibly one of the best mockbusters ever made! In addition, the gang shares their spoiler-free thoughts on 1991's Cape Fear, the Apple TV shows Cape Fear and Murder bot, as well as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Milly Alcock's Supergirl, and Evil Dead Burn! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Anthony Frith, disillusioned by the possibility his filmmaking dreams might have been usurped by everyday responsibilities, decided to go boldly into the unknown. He emailed legendary mockbuster (parodies of blockbuster films - i.e. TRANSMORPHERS instead of TRANSFORMERS) studio The Asylum to ask if they'd let him direct a movie. Never mind the fact Anthony had never directed a feature film. But the worst they could say was "No," right? To his surprise, The Asylum accepted and this is where Frith's documentary MOCKBUSTER kicks in, telling the story of his "6-day special," a phrase coined by The Asylum for movies filmed in - you guessed it - six days. What results is chaos, not dissimilar to that of a freshly-punted anthill. After receiving his mission in Los Angeles, Frith flies home to Australia to wait weeks for a script, wrangle together a local cast and crew, wade through studio interference and get the thing done, all while occasionally staring off into the distance to ask "Am I cut out for this?"It's a touching, funny documentary about providing one's nascent creativity with enough bumps and scrapes to take shape in the real world. What starts out as growing pains, this painful dichotomy between the fears of selling out and the inability to fulfill the purest expressions of art, turns into a gentle reminder: Don't take it all too seriously. Have fun. The joys of birthing a project into the world outweigh the terrors and labors of getting it there. It's a mockbuster, baby. Today, I interview Anthony Frith, the director of MOCKBUSTER. The term refers to a knock-off of a blockbuster. For every FAST AND THE FURIOUS, there's a FAST AND THE FIERCE.No studio does this more prolifically than The Asylum, best known for pumping out B-and-C movies quick, fast and dirty. They're the SHARKNADO crew.Frith sent them a cold email, asking to direct one of their movies and make a documentary about the process. They agreed and MOCKBUSTER, this insane story about getting a movie filmed in just six days, was born.We chatted about being silly online, balancing the needs of an Asylum sci-fi flick with those of a documentary, the realities of moviemaking, the surrealities of having AI write not one but two books about one's unreleased documentary, and so much more.MOCKBUSTER is currently available to watch in select theatres and on digital platforms across the U.S. & Canada.THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT (the 2025 version from The Asylum, not the 2009 version from the Asylum) is available to watch on Tubi.---Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdThrow a couple dollars in the tip jar!

We have spent years talking about how important The Blair Witch Project is. We discuss the pros and cons of the latest reimagining of the iconic found footage classic. And we are definitely interested. Plus, the latest internet horror fad that Hollywood wants to adapt into a movie. And while it does seem a little silly to us, they do have a strong director attached to it. The Asylum has been putting out grade-A quality B movies for a long time. Sharknado may be their most well-known, but their specialty are mockbusters like Tomb Invader and Top Gunner. We could not wait to take a look at their inner workings. Mockbuster does much more than that. Sure, there is plenty of footage from The Asylum library. And yes, all of it is amazing. The interviews with the people at the top of the company are also great. They know the score and are funny, entertaining, and informative. But it is the documentary's subject that is the beating heart of the film. Anthony Frith is one of the most charming people we have ever seen and we enjoyed watching his journey. Mockbuster ended up being an unexpected feel-good watch thanks to Frith and all of the incredibly supportive people featured. On top of all that, we get to see how a movie from The Asylum gets made! In a special interview, Will chats director Anthony Frith about his upcoming documentary Mockbuster. A once-promising Australian filmmaker, Anthony lands a final shot at glory with Hollywood's kings of B-movie schlock, the Asylum, the studio behind Sharknado. Tasked with directing a lost-world dinosaur film in suburban Adelaide on a six-day shoot and a shoestring budget, he also turns the camera on himself, filming a behind-the-scenes documentary as the chaos unfolds. Between demanding LA execs, a bewildered cast, and his own creeping self-doubt, both productions push their first-time director to the brink. Mockbuster is a hilarious and unexpectedly tender documentary about chasing the dream through the absurd hustle of genre filmmaking, but finding a different kind of success behind the scenes.0:00 - Introduction6:55 - InterviewFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/1980snow.Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@1980snowSee Mockbuster: https://www.mockbustermovie.com/.

It's another entertaining and enlightening episode of BEHIND THE LENS thanks to co-writer/director ANTHONY FRITH and his documentary MOCKBUSTER. Now, MOCKBUSTER isn't your typical documentary. This is a documentary directed by Anthony Frith concurrently with his directing of an Asylum Studios B-movie classic, THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT. I know you know The Asylum, the studio responsible for the SHARKNADO franchise and a few hundred other glorious B-movie genre gems that inevitably revolve around sharks, aliens, dinosaurs, Nazis, Russians, nukes, bad accents, vampires, zombies, and generally a take-off on known blockbusters by altering titles and scripts ever so slightly into what have become known as "Mockbusters." Enter Australian filmmaker ANTHONY FRITH. Anthony has an interesting background but has primarily made a living making corporate video shorts and PSAs like "how to grieve" video manuals, but has long dreamed of directing a feature film. One day, the light bulb went off, and he got the idea to reach out to The Asylum, asking to direct a film. As luck would have it, The Asylum had a movie for him to direct – THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT. Terrific! But, Anthony has to adhere to The Asylum model – 6 days to film, there is no script yet, and we want it shot in Australia. Okay! But Anthony took things a step further. He saw comedic potential in documenting the process of making a film for The Asylum and spoke with David Latt, CEO and Head of Production, about his idea to shoot a documentary of the making of THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT while he was shooting THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT. Needless to say, Latt loved the idea and said go for it, which meant Anthony would be directing two films simultaneously – a documentary and a narrative, with the documentary capturing the entire Asylum process of B-movie filmmaking. Thus, MOCKBUSTER was born. MOCKBUSTER is a scream! And this conversation with Anthony is almost too much fun as Anthony and I dive into the logistics and challenges of directing two films concurrently. THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT was financed entirely by The Asylum, while it was left to Anthony and his documentary producers to find financing for MOCKBUSTER. As you will hear, Anthony makes it clear that the two productions maintained separate budgets and did not overlap financially. They also had separate crews. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Australia really does punch above its weight when it comes to documentary filmmaking. Over the past 18 months alone, this country has produced a number of inspiring, world-class documentaries that fit in so well on the world stage. Documentaries like Floodland, Yurlu | Country, In the Trenches, Every Little Thing, and Songs Inside are some that you really must seek out if you haven't already seen them. Some new documentaries set for release this year include Jebadiah: Are We Ok?, Hard as Puck, Silenced, Prompt: How to Make a Documentary, and Anthony Frith's Mockbuster, one of the most unforgettable and enjoyable documentaries made in Australia in recent years. In this episode, I'm joined by Anthony to take a deep dive into the making of Mockbuster, and I can tell you he shares some really inspiring stories that will pump up any filmmaker. Having confidence and belief in yourself is what I took away from Anthony's story here. Mockbuster follows Anthony, a struggling filmmaker at the time, and his chance at redemption as he navigates the eccentric world of notorious Sharknado production house, The Asylum. Anthony has a love for absurd pop-culture anomalies. His work has taken him to Boston, where he studied the art of churning out novelty songs with cult musician Matt Farley in Lessons From A Middle Class Artist; to Burbank, where he made his feature debut directing a trashy dinosaur movie, The Land that Time Forgot, for The Asylum. Anyway… enjoy.

Horror Mockumentaries succeed because of the implied truths they pretend to offer. The authenticity, tangibility, and verisimilitude all convey that what you are watching actually happened. And, it could happen to YOU. Because it is a MOCKumentary and not a DOCumentary, this is all fiction, though, and thank goodness for that. Some of the most brutal and horrific stories originate from this favorite subgenre of horror. Join us in Episode 199, as the Scariest Things investigates the truth of Mockumentaries.

Christmas is the second scariest holiday of the year. From scary decorations to Christmas horror movies, there are a lot of things for horror fans to look forward to during the Yuletide season. It makes complete sense that Spirit Halloween would have a Spirit Christmas store. Though it is disappointing that they do not seem to be going a more horror-centric direction with it.We know what we are in for when we are going to cover a movie from The Asylum. Halloween Night from 2006 sounded as original as anything else they have ever done. The plot focuses on a young boy who has spent a decade in an asylum and is now heading home to wreak havoc. Oh yeah. It is also set on Halloween. If only it were that derivative. The story somehow manages to be straightforward and confusing. The Big Bad is one of the best from the studio. Unfortunately, he is offset by a lead who is one of the worst in cinema history. This describes Halloween Night in a nutshell. For everything it does right, it does a number of things completely wrong. But if you are participating in a 31 Days Horror Challenge is it worth a watch? We have covered a few Stephen King adaptations on our humble little podcast. We have yet to cover a really great one. The third Salem's Lot remake had a lot going against it. The source material is one of King's best and Tobe Hooper's take on the story is iconic. Add in that the 2024 version has been in limbo for a few years and you have a recipe for disappointment. We have yet to cover a truly awesome King movie, but the latest version of Salem's Lot does a lot of good things. The question here is not if it is actually good, but will people accept it? It seems to boil down to how familiar you are with other versions of the tale. It is by no means a masterpiece, but it may serve as a great introduction into one of the most important names in horror history. Hey listener! Let's dive into the fake, shall we? On this episode of Baconsale, Joel, Kent & Zack are going to be ranking movies that don't really exist. We found a website that lists fictional films found in shows such as Home Alone, 30 Rock, Singin' in the Rain, Seinfeld, UHF, Tropic Thunder, and The Office. Therefore, we'll be discussing which movies we would go see if they were real, which ones deserve a tier Tubi, and which films we're glad were never actually made. We may not agree a lot, but we'll certainly have fun chatting about counterfeit cinema.   If you know the difference between a matinee and a manatee, press play!

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the (overdue) season 3 finale, Nate is forced to deal with Cameron Winter's “Christmas gift”: the Asylum's infamous Monster Island. It's supposedly a “mockbuster” of 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but even by the Asylum's standards, that's a stretch. To unravel the legal loopholes and shenanigans that went into making this...movie, Nate brings on the Island's star lawyer, Raymund Martin, and the man's paralegal, Gary Steward. Not only do they riff this half-competent (and therefore, boring) “kaiyu” flick into the ground, they give you a crash course in the history of the Asylum and mockbusters. Nate's contractual obligations are now complete! Beforehand, Nate delivers his final report as the nonexistent “media master” to Mr. Gold, who reveals a few tantalizing details about what's been happening on the Island lately. Guest Cast Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward This episode's prologue, “Heart of Gold,” was written by Michael Hamilton and Nathan Marchand.
