Dutch and Tena briefly share their thoughts on the film titled The American Society of Magical Negroes. This film depicts a distorted reality where a secret society of black people dedicate their lives to pleasing white people. The organization's ultimate goal is to make white people feel comfortable and safe, thus aiming to reduce hate, racial injustice, and violence towards blacks. In actuality, a "magical negro" is a sell out who shucks and jives for the white man. A magical negro loses their power when they stand up to white supremacy.Tune into the discussion!Visit our website: https://www.therealistthevisionary.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-realist-the-visionary--3304218/support.

The collaboration between director and cinematographer is arguably the most important dynamic on any film shoot. Here to discuss that are Director Kobi Libii and Director of Photography Doug Emmett, with their satirical comedy, “The American Society of Magical Negroes.” “To me, the best versions of most collaborative things are the things you get to and you're like, ‘wait, was that your idea or was that my idea? I can't remember.' And there's a million like this… where I'm like, ‘oh, I really thought you pitched that to me.' And he's like, ‘no, no, I thought you pitched that to me!' Because it's not my idea or Doug's idea. Or my process or my vision or Doug's vision. It's a thing that gets made in the space between us, that is of the story, and of the characters, and of what this thing that we're building between us is.”—Kobi Libii, Director and Writer, “The American Society of Magical Negroes”This conversation was a live webinar as part of the Dolby Institute's partnership with Sundance Collab, the digital platform from the Sundance Institute designed for filmmakers, with exclusive webinars, curated resources, and free educational videos.“The American Society of Magical Negroes” was a winner of the Dolby Institute Fellowship, which grants independent films with the funds to finish in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and we were very proud to finally watch the completed film when it premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival before it was released in theaters by Focus Features.Be sure to check out the film, now available to rent in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on video streaming services. Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to announce the next film, "The American Society of Magical Negroes." The film follows a young man, Aren, who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people's lives easier. The random topic this week is about the rap beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. However, as there are so many other shows talking about the lyrical contest, we decided to take a different angle on what this beef means in a larger context. Frankly, how it and many other rap beefs tend to squeeze women in the middle as named victims, weaponized sexual encounters, and even the stripping of their humanity to be used as merely objects for these men to manipulate for the end goal of winning the contest in the court of public opinion.
Summer Blockbuster Season is officially here and we kick it off with our review of THE FALL GUY starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt! We discuss the odd combination of high critical scores and weak box office totals and where this puts Ryan Gosling's movie star status. We also look back at the epic season of "Shogun" before Shane gives his mini-reviews for Nic Cage in 'Arcadian', 'The American Society of Magical Negroes', and 'Challengers' after Andrew's glowing review last week.

Adam Ball and Van Connor are back with your seven day guide to everything movies: feat. reviews of Boy Kills World, Scarygirl, Ordinary Angels, There's Still Tomorrow, The American Society of Magical Negroes and Challengers. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week there's no guest, but lots more witterings from the good doctors to make up for it. Mark gives his take on a swathe of new films, including ‘Ordinary Angels', a Hilary Swank-starring emotional drama about a hairdresser who rallies an entire community to help a widowed father get his critically ill youngest daughter a liver transplant; ‘Boy Kills World', an action thriller about a martial arts expert who goes on a campaign of vengeance after he is rendered deaf-mute by an attack that killed his entire family; ‘I.S.S.', a science fiction thriller, which sees tensions flare aboard the International Space Station when a worldwide conflict breaks out on earth; and ‘Challengers', Luca Guadagnino's latest, which sees Zendaya star as a former-tennis-prodigy-turned-coach who transforms her husband into a world-famous grand slam champion only to become embroiled in a love triangle when he competes against his former best friend – and her former lover. The big review of the week is ‘The American Society of Magical Negroes', a comedy-drama, which sees a young man join a clandestine group of magical African Americans committed to enhancing the lives of white individuals, satirising the Magical Negro trope. “The American Society of Magical Negroes” may go down as the biggest box office flop of all time. Only three weeks after its release, the farcical film has been pulled from theaters after tallying just $2.5 million in receipts. Jason, T.J. Moe, Anthony Walker, and Shemeka Michelle have done the hard work and endured the movie so you don't have to. The panel members share their biggest takeaways from the cinematic catastrophe and why the film's failure should provide hope for America. In Tennessee Harmony, Virgil Walker joins T.J., Anthony, and Whitlock to discuss South Carolina coach Dawn Staley's recent conflicting comments on God, her faith, and transgenders in sports. The title alone caught Panama Jackson's attention; we're talking about 'The American Society of Magical Negroes.' Some call it one of the worst films ever made, so Jackson and Wypipologist Michael Harriot spent their hard-earned money on movie tickets to answer the question, just how bad is this movie? Fashion! Politics! Entertainment! This episode of LC kind of has all those things! What it definitely has is best in the biz guest Nicole Byer! Nicole and the boys get into how we'd do the pandemic differently, escape room techniques, how all male flight attendants are gay, reveal the REAL MCU, and anticipate Cowboy Carter just days before its release. Also, what it feels like to fly in a film, selling the joke, Goodfellas, Oda Mae Brown culture, Christian Siriano, Jenifer Lewis's recent accident and recovery, how Madame Web was maybe good, how Fed Ex can kinda suck and the battle between water based and silicon based personal lubricant. All this, and Nicole demands Matt give her the information of a bad, harmful psychic that made him distrust Bowen Yang. Go see The American Society of Magical Negroes in the CINEMA! David Alan Grier has been a mainstay on TV, Broadway and film since his initial acting debut in the acclaimed Broadway show “The First,” about Jackie Robinson's life and legacy. That role, in 1981, earned him a Tony Award nomination, but he found a new level of fame as a core cast member on the classic 1990s sketch show “In Living Color.” His more recent projects spotlight the actor's range: he stars in the 2023 musical film adaptation of “The Color Purple,” and in this year's “The American Society of Magical Negroes,” a satirical fantasy film that's introducing Grier to a younger generation of fans. In this episode, he sits down with host Kai Wright to talk about the highs and lows of navigating the industry, while also sharing reflections on his past work, and what he thinks about his legacy going forward as he reaches new audiences.
