Like they say, behind every good Frankenstein's monster is a great Frankenstein's monster's girlfriend??? If you're scratching the bolts that are on both sides of your neck in confusion, fear not. Perhaps this week's movie “The Bride” exclamation point will educate you and raise awareness as to what's going on. This movie could, quite possibly, save lives! One of the lifesavers is Christian Bale, playing Frankenstein's monster and the other is Jessie Buckley as The Bride exclamation point. They join forces as a sort of grotesque Bonnie and Clyde or Mickey and Mallory from “Natural Born Killers” in director Maggie Gyllenhaal's “reimagining” of Mary Shelley's classic story. Is it worth watching at the theater to find out what happens? Check out this episode of Movies Merica to find out! “The Bride!” also stars Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Matthew Maher, Julianne Hough, Jeannie Berlin and Zlatko Buric.Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

Comment on this episode by going to KDramaChat.com We were supposed to publish episode 13.15, an episode recapping and analyzing episode 15 of the hit K Drama Start-Up. We've had some technical difficulties, so instead, we are republishing episode 11.18, the episode where we analyze the movie Past Lives by Celine Song. Thanks for your patience. We'll be back to Start-Up next week!  Original show notes: Today, we'll be discussing Past Lives, the acclaimed 2023 film written and directed by Celine Song and starring Greta Lee as Nora Moon, Teo Yoo as Hae Sung, and John Magaro as Arthur. We discuss: How Past Lives explores the Asian diaspora experience, especially the tension and beauty of living between two cultures. The significance of Greta Lee's performance and her fear of speaking Korean, being filmed in 35mm film. The childhood relationship between Na Young and Hae Sung and how their sweet bond sets the foundation for the rest of the story. The scene of their final childhood goodbye on the stairs—symbolic of diverging life paths and emotional separation. The realism of immigration—what is gained and lost when families move to another country, and how that move changes identity and aspirations. The film's exploration of inyeon, the Korean concept of fate or connection, and how it plays out in both romantic and platonic relationships. The emotional Skype calls between Nora and Hae Sung in their twenties and how video calls ultimately weren't enough to keep them together. Arthur's perspective as Nora's husband and how he navigates feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, and his genuine interest in her Korean identity. The triangulated tension during the New York reunion—how Nora, Arthur, and Hae Sung's interactions reveal different types of love and connection. The power of silence and simple gestures, particularly in the final moments between Nora and Hae Sung. Why Nora cries at the end—mourning a love that never was, and the layers of her past that she can never reclaim. Whether Nora and Arthur's marriage is built on love, convenience, or shared experience—and how their synchronized steps at the end suggest a kind of unity. The cinematography's role in enhancing the film's emotional resonance, including scenes of the Brooklyn Bridge, ferry rides, and the iconic closing restaurant sequence. Hollywood has never shied away from portraying obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — but it often gets it wrong. Typically, OCD is reduced to a punchline, a quirky habit, or a stereotype about neatness and handwashing. In this episode, TV & movie actor Rachel Alig and award-winning filmmaker Sam Sabawi take us behind the scenes of their acclaimed short film “For All I Know” to show how OCD can — and should — be portrayed with truth and compassion. Sam, who lives with OCD, explains why lazy writing has distorted public understanding and how he used his lived experience to create an authentic story. Rachel shares the emotional depth required to embody a character with OCD, and how she avoided the clichés that Hollywood often leans on. Together, they reveal how real therapy techniques — especially exposure and response prevention (ERP) — were brought into the film to highlight the messy, ongoing reality of recovery. Listener takeaways: how Hollywood depictions have shaped public misconceptions of OCD and why the process of authentically portraying OCD on screen matters what OCD actually is — and isn't why ERP therapy is the gold standard for treatment This is a rare insider look at mental illness through the eyes of two industry leaders determined to change how we see OCD. Listen now! Sam and Rachel's Award-Winning Short Film About OCD, For All I Know, is available on YouTube now. (Viewing Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vwk4UPHKp0) Our guest, Sam Sabawi, is a two-time Emmy-nominated filmmaker whose work spans narrative fiction, documentary, and unscripted formats. A five-time Telly Award winner and two-time Anthem Gold recipient, Sabawi brings over a decade of experience in visual storytelling across scripted film, development, and branded content. His recent short film For All I Know explores the interior landscape of OCD to externalize intrusive thoughts. The film is currently on its festival circuit. Our guest, Rachel Alig, is quickly establishing herself as a dynamic force in both comedy and drama, with a growing list of standout performances across film, television, and commercial work. With over a decade of experience, she has shared the screen with acclaimed talent including John Magaro (The Big Short, PastLives, Carol), Lou Diamond Phillips, Nick Jonas, Jason Biggs, Rob Riggle, and Master P. Her most recent film, OMAHA—starring John Magaro—premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in the prestigious U.S. Dramatic Competition category and was acquired by Greenwich Entertainment for a theatrical release in early 2026. She also appears in FOUND FOOTAGE, distributed by Vertical Entertainment, which hit theaters nationwide on June 20, 2025. Rachel stars opposite of Lou Diamond Phillips and Malcolm McDowell in, ET TU, which started streaming on all major platforms this summer.  And today, September 2, 2025, INVISIBLE, is streaming on Amazon Prime, where Rachel has the lead female role. Rachel's craft is rooted in a strong foundation of training, including The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in West Hollywood and The Groundlings. John Magaro has quietly built one of the most impressive filmographies in Hollywood. So quietly, in fact, that he's still often being dubbed a “breakout” with each new hit he delivers. Magaro insists his priority is being an artist, not a movie star. However, given the pace with which he's churning out standout performances in phenomenal films, the latter is more undeniable than ever. John Magaro is a star and any production would be lucky to have him.The two most recent films to have Magaro as a headliner are an Oscar nominee and a Sundance 2025 Grand Jury Prize nominee. The former is September 5, a film that masterfully brings the viewer into ABC Sports' control room at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics as they redefine live news when they have to shift from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage. The film recently scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and was deserving of far more. The other film Magaro is in the midst of celebrating is his Sundance 2025 selection, Omaha. In Cole Webley's feature directorial debut, Magaro plays a father who suddenly wakes his two young children, Ella and Charlie, and insists they must go on a road trip. Ella soon comes to suspect that what seems like a fun family adventure is actually something wholly different for her father. In honor of Omaha's big debut at the Sundance Film Festival and September 5's Oscar run, Magaro took the time to swing by the Collider interview studio at Sundance, brought to you by Rendezvous Capital, for a Collider Forces interview. While paving the way to his experience making those two films, Magaro explained how he came to embrace his truth as an actor, a truth that's sparked some of the very best performances we've seen in recent years. Today on Cinemaholics, we’re sitting down with director Tim Fehlbaum and actor John Magaro to talk about their new film, September 5. This gripping drama takes us behind the scenes of the 1972 Munich Olympics, where the ABC newsroom was thrust into the chaos of broadcasting one of the first live terrorist attacks. It’s a high-stakes story about media ethics, personal decisions, and the power of storytelling that feels just as relevant today as it was back then. With Tim’s sharp direction and John’s striking performance, September 5 premiered at Venice to rave reviews and has already sparked some big conversations about how we navigate the intersection of truth, accountability, and media. We’re diving into all of it—how they approached such a delicate story, the challenges they faced, and why this film resonates so deeply right now. "I was so beaten down by the system. I remember thinking I need to rethink this whole thing. I'm just gonna be honest, I'm just gonna be real, I have nothing to lose at this point.”- John Magaro TODAY'S EPISODE OF 10,000 NOs Podcast is rife with takeaways for actors, from the craft of acting to the approach to auditions to the ups and downs of a long career, even for someone as well-respected as John Magaro. John was one of the leads of last year's Best Picture Academy Award nominee, Past Lives. For his performance, he was on the short list for Best Supporting Actor. He has also consistently worked with prestigious filmmakers like Adam McKay ( in The Big Short), Todd Haynes (in Carol), Kelly Reichardt (in First Cow) and David Chase (in Not Fade Away).John and I spend time breaking down his extremely honest approach to character, inspired by his work with famed acting coach Harold Guskin. And we discuss his role as a producer of Laroy, Texas as well as being the lead of our little indie that has made waves at festivals and with critics. Actors, you don't want to miss this one.10,000 NOs podcast is now in it's 2.0 phase: after a long pause from late 2021 to late 2023, it has returned in a more raw format: shorter episodes, like the Monday Morsels of yesteryear (they may be short, solo riffs by Matt on central themes of the pod, excerpts from Matt's 10,000 NOs Insiders Community Zooms, or excerpts from Insiders VIP sessions with VIPs from the entertainment interview and beyond). Be on the look out as, every now and then, we will likely drop some old school, long-form, classic 10,000 NOs interviews as bonus episodes. Prefer to WATCH (versus listen)? The actor John Magaro is picky about whom he goes to dinner with. Magaro is an adventurous eater. So whether he's buying offal from the butcher, making stews from the 1800s or falling in love over a plate of rabbit, he says it's important to him that the people he shares a meal with are willing to be curious. For Magaro, it's about more than personal preferences. Sharing a meal and connecting with other people, he says, is the bedrock of society.Magaro played Arthur in “Past Lives,” one of our favorite movies last year. His character is constantly working to understand his wife on a deeper level. And Magaro sees that quality in “My Dinners With Andrew,” by Sara Pepitone, a Modern Love essay about food as a love language, and a series of dinners that make, and break, two relationships.
