Sam Clements and Hope Hopkinson and speak to director Tim Fehlbaum and actors Peter Sarsgaard and John Magaro about their new film September 5. September 5 unveils the decisive moment that forever changed media coverage and continues to impact live news today. Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the film follows an American Sports broadcasting team that quickly adapted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage. Through this lens, "September 5" provides a fresh perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time. At the heart of the story is Geoff (John Magaro), a young and ambitious producer striving to prove himself to his boss, the legendary TV executive Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Together with German interpreter Marianne (Leonie Benesch) and his mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), Geoff unexpectedly takes the helm of the live coverage. As narratives shift, time ticks away, and conflicting rumors spread, with the hostages' lives hanging in the balance, Geoff grapples with tough decisions while confronting his own moral compass. John Magaro has quietly built one of the most impressive filmographies in Hollywood. So quietly, in fact, that he's still often being dubbed a “breakout” with each new hit he delivers. Magaro insists his priority is being an artist, not a movie star. However, given the pace with which he's churning out standout performances in phenomenal films, the latter is more undeniable than ever. John Magaro is a star and any production would be lucky to have him.The two most recent films to have Magaro as a headliner are an Oscar nominee and a Sundance 2025 Grand Jury Prize nominee. The former is September 5, a film that masterfully brings the viewer into ABC Sports' control room at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics as they redefine live news when they have to shift from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage. The film recently scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and was deserving of far more. The other film Magaro is in the midst of celebrating is his Sundance 2025 selection, Omaha. In Cole Webley's feature directorial debut, Magaro plays a father who suddenly wakes his two young children, Ella and Charlie, and insists they must go on a road trip. Ella soon comes to suspect that what seems like a fun family adventure is actually something wholly different for her father. In honor of Omaha's big debut at the Sundance Film Festival and September 5's Oscar run, Magaro took the time to swing by the Collider interview studio at Sundance, brought to you by Rendezvous Capital, for a Collider Forces interview. While paving the way to his experience making those two films, Magaro explained how he came to embrace his truth as an actor, a truth that's sparked some of the very best performances we've seen in recent years. Today on Cinemaholics, we’re sitting down with director Tim Fehlbaum and actor John Magaro to talk about their new film, September 5. This gripping drama takes us behind the scenes of the 1972 Munich Olympics, where the ABC newsroom was thrust into the chaos of broadcasting one of the first live terrorist attacks. It’s a high-stakes story about media ethics, personal decisions, and the power of storytelling that feels just as relevant today as it was back then. With Tim’s sharp direction and John’s striking performance, September 5 premiered at Venice to rave reviews and has already sparked some big conversations about how we navigate the intersection of truth, accountability, and media. We’re diving into all of it—how they approached such a delicate story, the challenges they faced, and why this film resonates so deeply right now. If you're a reader, listener, viewer, or follower of BEHIND THE LENS, then you know that this week is a very special show as it's the last show of 2024 AND the last show of the first TEN YEARS of BTL!!! And I think this is a special befitting the occasion thanks to my special guest w/d JOHN CORCORAN talking about his debut short film SKYFOREST, plus my exclusive interview with JACK HUSTON talking all things DAY OF THE FIGHT. We kick off the show with my exclusive interview with writer/director JACK HUSTON discussing his narrative feature directorial debut, DAY OF THE FIGHT. A truly knockout directorial that shows me that as good as Jack is acting onscreen, he's even better as a director and writer behind the lens. Written and directed by JACK HUSTON, DAY OF THE FIGHT boasts a megawatt cast including, among others, Michael Pitt as "Mikey", Ron Perlman as MIkey's trainer and father figure "Stevie", John Magaro as "Father Patrick", Steve Buscemi as Mikey's uncle, and Joe Pesci as Mikey's dad, along with Nicolette Robinson and Cameron Williamson. Then writer/director JOHN CORCORAN joins me live fresh off his West Coast premiere, discussing his directorial debut with the short film/concept film SKYFOREST, a sci-fi thriller that will have you wanting more as soon as it ends. Hard to believe that so much tension and anticipation can be built within 15 short minutes, but John together with his editor Jordan H. Johnson does just that. Truth be told, I didn't want to see this short end! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Josh Porter, Jai Stefan, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, and Colleen Camp joined Jack Hutson on the production team. In 2023, the movie was featured in various film festivals. Sixty-nine episodes in and John Magaro may be the best example of a Don't Know Her? actor... We had seen him in the likes of Orange Is the New Black (2015-2019), Carol (Todd Haynes, 2015) and The Big Short (Adam McKay, 2015) but hadn't properly noticed him until First Cow (Kelly Reichardt, 2019) and Past Lives (Celine Song, 2023). And wow! His soulful performances are the stuff of magic and we are still surprised how John (along with his co-stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo) were not Oscar nominated for their work. Join us as we go to the start of John's career starring alongside Jodie Foster in The Brave One (Neil Jordan, 2007) and award-winning lead performance in Not Fade Away (David Chase, 2012) though to Past Lives. The actor John Magaro is picky about whom he goes to dinner with. Magaro is an adventurous eater. So whether he's buying offal from the butcher, making stews from the 1800s or falling in love over a plate of rabbit, he says it's important to him that the people he shares a meal with are willing to be curious. For Magaro, it's about more than personal preferences. Sharing a meal and connecting with other people, he says, is the bedrock of society.Magaro played Arthur in “Past Lives,” one of our favorite movies last year. His character is constantly working to understand his wife on a deeper level. And Magaro sees that quality in “My Dinners With Andrew,” by Sara Pepitone, a Modern Love essay about food as a love language, and a series of dinners that make, and break, two relationships.

We wrap up what is left of the 2024 Academy Awards Best Picture Nominees that we hadn't gotten to yet with a nice little romantic drama about love, destiny and the nature of relationships. Nora left her childhood love, Hae Sung, in Korea when her family emigrated to Canada. They reconnect in their twenties online for a friendship with overwhelming emotion. Years later Nora has married a man she met on a writing retreat while Hae Sung served in the military and traveled to China. Now Hae Sung comes to New York to finally meet, in person, the woman he has been emotionally tethered to for the first time since their childhood. We're talking about Celine Song's “PAST LIVES” starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo & John Magaro. It probably won't get all the awards. It's only nominated for two Oscars and one of them is fuckin' best picture. Damn I woulda probably nominated Greta Lee & Teo Yoo. They did some good stuff here. Ah well. Ain't our ceremony. We're predicting that they will pick Oppenheimer. The funniest Best Picture winner would be Maestro, hands down. Anyway, you can watch “PAST LIVES” on Paramount Plus as of this drop so trade your Netflix password for your cousin's Paramount password and check this one out. Fucking feel it. John Magaro has been delivering consistently stellar performances in films like “Not Fade Away,” “The Big Short,” “Carol,” “First Cow,” and “Showing Up,” to name a few. This past year he played Arthur, husband of Greta Lee's character Nora, in “Past Lives.” On this episode he talks, spoiler-free, about the last scene of that film, and why it makes people emotional. He explains how receiving books, music, photos from directors helps in his preparation. He makes the case for experience over academia, takes us back to a big breakthrough that came to him from the legendary acting teacher Howard Guskin, and talks about how newfound freedom in the work has changed everything. Plus much more! Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Then the importance of accepting the life you have and are blessed with rather than sacrificing the life you should have for the life you had and or did not have. Mark 1:35-39 Paul's teaching in 1st Corinthians 13 that one puts away the things of childhood when one becomes an adult. One can easily covet the past life or the life that might have been rather than accepting and embracing the life one has been blessed with.
