The world is currently facing multiple crises, from geopolitical conflicts to pandemics and climate change. But amidst this turbulence, international aid budgets are being stretched as domestic issues take precedence. The UK has cut its overseas aid budget significantly, from 0.7 to 0.5 per cent of gross national income. Meanwhile, low-income countries need more support than ever, as they deal with the fall out of wars, extreme poverty, natural disasters and humanitarian issues. The costs involved are huge, and while aid still has a role to play, we need to look beyond grants to unlock funding on a bigger scale to fix these problems. In this sponsored podcast, host and freelance journalist Emma Haslett is joined by Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham and chair of the cross-party international development parliamentary committee; James Mwangi, founder of Climate Action Platform for Africa, an organisation working to unlock Africa's potential as a global hub for climate action; and Hannah Ryder, CEO at Development Reimagined, an Africa-led and women-led international development consultancy.Focusing on the African continent, they explore the need to reform global financial institutions, and how the UK can develop new models of financial support that rely less on aid and more on partnership and collaboration with low-income countries. This podcast is sponsored by ONE, a not-for-profit international development organisation which campaigns to end extreme poverty and preventable disease by 2030.Join the fight for a more equal future: visit one.org. Following the chaotic scenes in Parliament on Wednesday Sonia Sodha of The Observer analyses the political week. Dr Ruth Fox of The Hansard Society explains why an opposition day debate about Gaza, and calls for a ceasefire, descended in to bitter arguments about parliamentary procedure. John Nicolson of the SNP discusses why his party thinks the Commons Speaker should resign over the issue. And, to reflect on the wider crisis, Sonia speaks to former Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood and the Chair of the International Development Select Committee, Sarah Champion, who has just returned from a trip to the Egypt-Gaza border. On Monday the Business Secretary, Kemi Badenoch, gave a robust response to claims made by the former Chairman of the Post Office who she had previously sacked over the Horizon scandal. Sonia speaks to two MPs who were in the chamber for that statement: Conservative Conor Burns and Labour's Kevan Jones, who has campaigned for many years on behalf of wrongly convicted sub-postmasters. And, after Keir Starmer's chief of staff suggested Labour could make use of citizens' assemblies to decide on contentious issues, Sonia brings together Louise Caldwell, who took part in the Irish citizens' assembly on abortion, and Joe Twyman of Deltapoll, who has helped run such assemblies in the past.

Not physical beauty, fading charm, splendour of earthly light (so precious to our eyes), fair melodies of harmony and song, odours of flowers, incense, spices, manna or honey, a body we can embrace with physical delight. It is these things I love when I love my God. Yet, when I love him, I love a certain sort of light, and a voice, incense, food, embrace; but they are of the sort I love deep in my inner being, where my soul is steeped in a light no place can contain – listen to a voice that never fades away with time – breathes an incense no gust of wind can carry away – tastes a food that never runs out through being eaten – clutches an embrace that doesn't dissolve through desires fulfillment. That is what I love when I love my God.But what is my God? I asked this question to the earth. It answered "I am not God". Everything on earth said the same. I asked the sea, the abysses of the deep, and the life-forms that creep in them, but they replied, "we are not your God. See what is above us". I spoke to the blowing wind; but the entire atmosphere and all that lives in it replied, "I am not God". Then I asked sky, sun, moon, stars; but they told me, "we are not the God you seek". I spoke to everything around me, all that my senses revealed to me, and I said, "seeing that you are not my God, tell me about him. Tell me something of my God!" In a loud clear voice they replied "God is the one who made us". I put these questions simply by looking on these things, and their beauty was the only answer they gave.Augustine - Confessions – Ch. 10
In this episode, I cover fake news, child abuse, the continuing Hunger Games society and Asian and Muslim sex gangs. Figures show increasing numbers of young people get their news and information from social media. The increase in fake news means more and more people are finding it harder to discern fact from fiction. Social media is also dictating what information people see and what they don't see. Silicon Valley has the greatest level of censorship the world has ever seen. Household debt in the UK is worse than at any time on record, according to the Office for National Statistics. Also, thousands of people are working for top high street brands while still being homeless. This is the Hunger Games society. Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham, has had her security boosted after receiving death threats for speaking out about the *fact* that Asian and Muslim sex gangs are abusing women. Prince Charles has stated in a letter recently he had no idea a long-time friend of his, Bishop Steve Ball, was a paedophile. I talk about the wider implications of this statement.

When you take a radio show outside of the studio, it can be one huge operation! This week, I’m joined by my two radio best buddies and seasoned pro’s when it comes to broadcasting outside the usual studio comforts - from Absolute Radio, Sarah Champion and Pete Donaldson. Hear about why a live outside broadcast can be the setting of such beautiful on-air moments (maybe not when Pete fell into human waste on the job) but from the disasters to the triumphs. We cover everything you need to know about LIVE OB’ing, including the very important dump button! Enjoy & soak up all the insight and advice on this very funny episode.

The grand comeback continues as friend of the show Jude Wanga (on Twitter @judeinlondon) joins the gang to review the 2016 film Imperium and the 2017 Jay-Z album 4:44, as well as to discuss Labour frontbencher Sarah Champion's appalling Sun article on child abuse, the fascist forum Stormfront, and the leaked transcripts from Donald Trump's first week in office. Putting the heat on the RP crime syndicate to discuss Lord of the Rings, Jude posits to the team that Daniel Radcliffe has chosen to follow "the Elijah Wood route" and that, if indeed he has, good.
MPs have knocked off for another break. But the podcast doesn't stop. A couple of weeks ago I took the opportunity to interview shadow equalities minister Sarah Champion along with a very special guest - my 8-year-old daughter. Let's face it, we need a bit of sweetness in our politics after the US election and this delivers as Sarah is quizzed about whether Jeremy Corbyn is rubbish, the Labour family and her Dare2Care initiative.
This week, Helen and Stephen explore Jeremy Corbyn's appeal among different parts of the Labour membership, discuss Sarah Champion's return to the shadow-cabinet, and question the value of social mobility as an aim for the Left. You also ask us: When will Labour's turmoil end? And what do we think about More United? (Helen Lewis, Stephen Bush). See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
