In 2002 Speedstar released their debut, Bruises You Can Touch, and unless you were in Australia, you probably never heard it. The Australian band's first album is a quietly affecting collection of melancholic indie pop that trades in mood and atmosphere over flash. Restrained production gives the band's delicate melodies and wistful vocals room to breathe, creating an intimate and emotionally resonant experience. The album blends acoustic warmth and subtle distorted textures that recalls early Coldplay, Keane, Starsailor, and other 2000s post-Britpop bands, and stands as an overlooked gem of early-2000s indie. You may have heard that Underwood's primitive classic from 1988 entitled "California Sigh" was recently reissued by Drag City Records, but did you know that he played alongside the late and great Tim Buckley? Underwood was responsible for laying down those incredible guitar and piano parts on esteemed albums such as Buckley's self-titled debut, the monumental "Goodbye and Hello", "Starsailor" and countless others throughout their short, but transcendent career together. Underwood eventualy stepped away from music all together to write for prestigious publications as well as publishing books like "Inside Paul Horn" and the accalimed "Blue Monday: Tim Buckley Remembered".

You may have heard that Underwood's 1988 primitive classic, "California Sigh" was recently reissued by the great folks over at Drag City for the first time in over 30 years, but did you know that Underwood was also the lead guitarist for the legendary Tim Buckley throughout his short, but incredible influential career? He was responsible for those beautifully transcendent riffs and chord structures on albums such as Buckely's 1966 debut, the monumental "Goodbye and Hello", "Starsailor" and countless others. Eventually Underwood stepped away from recording music and the tiring industry all together to write for prestigious music publications as well as publish books like "Inside Paul Horn" and the acclaimed "Blue Monday: Tim Buckley Remembered". Hear his story through the cadence of this staticky conversation thats both cosmic and contagiously calming. Enjoy!

Welcome to the Stupid Hearts Club! The Club for everyone with a Stupid Heart-------------------Enjoy this free snippet of Nico's new Patreon exclusive podcast, The Busking Chronicles, which he recorded with James Walsh of Starsailor fame. I have made a really cool episode of The Busking Chronicles here for you guys. James and I met when we both played a fancy pants Soho clubs acoustic night after the last winter lockdown, with James headlining and blowing everyone away with his voice, while I held his beer and then caught Covid. It was a cool night though and we stayed in touch.I was hoping recently that he would be up for doing the Busky Chrons when he actually messaged me saying we should get together and chat and try and think of a project, which we did. Over a slightly wrongly administered lunch order in Londons 'Troubador' club, which is full of Bob Dylan vibes and stories from when he played there many times. This chat took place in a pals house in West London and features me marvelling at some of the shoulders James has rubbed with (?), his positive attitude to the selfie and sound advice on how to deal with knob'eads. The one thing we will never run out of.-------------------If you like what I do and you want to support me financially, as well as get access to some cool extras, please take a look at my Patreon! And if you can't, or indeed just don't want to, then I'm still super happy you're here (but I will now ignore you if I see you in the street)And if you want to hear more from me I'm always putting things up on my Instagram, come and say hello-------------------Editing by Oliver ConnollyProduction support from Drew ToynbeeCopyright 2024 Nico Tatarowicz

On this day 20 years ago, President Bush said that he had seen "no evidence" that Saddam Hussein was involved in the September 11 terrorist attacksWhile The White House has never formally charged that Mr. Hussein was part of the Sept. 11 plot, President Bush had wondered immediately after the attack whether Saddam Hussein's regime might have had a hand in it. We discuss that and the testimony from National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection and Counter-Terrorism, Richard A Clarke, who claimed the government had failed the American people. IN other news Hurricane Isabel made landfall in the USA this week 20n years ago, which was a welcome distraction for the president amidst all the political turmoil. Chris has been by Rob's side even longer than his management. Chris shares never heard before stories about the launch of Rob's solo career: how he came to work with Guy Chambers and the rest of his band, what happened when he went to Miami to work with Desmond Child, how Life Thru A Lens was recorded, and what many record company execs really thought of Robbie ‘pre-Angels'. This week we're discussing every album by Tim Buckley. Known by many for his incredible vocal abilities, as well as being the father of Jeff Buckley, Tim had an extremely diverse and experimental career. While he started out as traditional 60s folk rock, he also ventured into crazy town with albums like Starsailor, before his notorious “Sex Funk” era in the 70s. Buckley overdosed on heroin at the age of 28, having only met his son once.Closing track: “Starsailor” from Starsailor (1970)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Goodbye and Hello (1967) — Best AlbumStarsailor (1970) — Personal FavoriteLook at the Fool (1974) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Starsailor (1970) — Best AlbumLook at the Fool (1974) — Personal FavoriteSefronia (1973) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Tim Buckley (1966)Goodbye and Hello (1967)Happy Sad (1969)Blue Afternoon (1969)Lorca (1970)Starsailor (1970)Greetings from LA (1972)Sefronia (1973)Look at the Fool (1974)
James Walsh, frontman of Starsailor, has a new solo record out. It's called Coming Good, and it really is a lovely collection of songs. As the focal point of the aforementioned four-piece, James has sold over three million records. He's experienced life at every level of the music industry. Major labels and indies. Big budgets and none. He's received adoration and cutting critical distain. And, bizarrely, with Starsailor and the Warrington band's second album, Silence Is Easy, he was also the subject of Phil Spector's final production work before the Wall of Sound pioneer's conviction for murder in 2009. Heads up, the audio on this episode is a bit crummy. Not bonus episode crummy, but a bit stuttery in places. And yet I think good stuff follows regardless. We get into all of the aforementioned, and more, during the course of this episode. In this episode we welcome the excellent Devon Powers — beamed in from Philadelphia — and ask her to talk about The Village Voice, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the White Stripes… and music journalism since the turn of the century.Devon begins by talking about the music she loved when growing up in her native Michigan — and her first awareness of "rock critics". We hear about her move to New York City in 1999, her early pieces for the PopMatters site, and the Anglophilia that led to umpteen pieces about the likes of Clinic, Starsailor, Badly Drawn Boy and, yes, even Ocean Colour Scene. Citing a great 2003 piece she wrote about Red Hot Chili Peppers, who released a new album the week of this recording, we ask Devon what those punk-funk Californicators meant to her in the '90s and noughties. After a brief discussion of Devon's 2004 thinkpiece 'Is Music Journalism Dead?', we turn our attention to Writing the Record: The Village Voice and the Birth of Rock Criticism, the 2013 book which came out of her doctoral dissertation at NYU. She talks about the vital New York weekly paper, and the "rock critics" who were such a key part of its arts coverage — particularly Richard Goldstein, several of whose '60s Voice pieces we have on RBP. We then pay tribute to another Voice contributor, John Swenson, lost to us a few days before this recording, as well as to Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins and Mighty Diamonds frontman "Tabby" Shaw. Two clips from Ira Robbins' 2001 audio interview with the White Stripes prompt a general chinwag about Jack, Meg, blues etc., after which Mark zips through the most notable of the interviews & reviews he's just added to the RBP library, including pieces about the Kingston Trio, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Canned Heat and Teddy Pendergrass. Barney then rounds things off by flagging up pieces on Marc Bolan, the Prodigy, Tony Hatch, Jack Good and the Descendents. Many thanks to special guest Devon Powers; visit her website at devonpowers.com and find Writing the Record in all good bookshops. The Rock's Backpages podcast is proud to be part of the Pantheon podcast network.Pieces discussed: The Village Voice and the Birth of Rock Criticism, PJ Harvey, Is Music Journalism Dead?, Red Hot Chili Peppers audio, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Rick Rubin, The White Stripes audio, Taylor Hawkins audio, Foo Fighters, Crawdaddy, The Mighty Diamonds, Alexis Korner, Paul Revere, Disco, Teddy Pendergrass, Little Richard, Steve Paul, Canned Heat, Curtis Mayfield, Oasis, Marc Bolan audio, The Prodigy, Tony Hatch, Jack Good and the Descendents.
