All new episodes are coming back soon, but until then, we're letting Yadvina grant you access to another episode from behind the Patreon wall, this one from August 2022. (Bryan)'s back in The Carriage House! He hasn't listened to Scarlett Curtis's Free Feed episode yet, but there's just SOMETHING about her that rubs him the wrong way (we have no idea what it could be, but Naomi and Cynthia might know, pardon me). After a thorough chat about THE DEEP END, the Hulu documentary about Teal Swan, we answer a cliffhanger about a brother and his socially anxious girlfriend causing a rift in the family. Then we end with some follow-ups, including one for the ages from our Lonely in Madrid letter writer that you've got to hear. This is the kind of episode that you'll want to listen to while walking down the cobblestone roads of Spain, excuse me. Do you miss Ronna (& Bryan) while they're on their summer Free Feed break? Back at the very beginning, when The Shift was still a hair-brained idea, I sat in Emma Freud's kitchen chatting about being old birds. It ended up being the final episode of the first series. Here it is again.Where to start with this week's guest? Now 58, Emma Freud is a broadcaster, presenter, columnist and fund-raiser, for want of a better way of putting the incredible work she and her partner Richard Curtis do with Comic Relief. And she's got four kids. And a bazillion pets (listen on for kittens!). And she lives in my Pinterest board. And she's not afraid to call a spade a spade. Lots of spades, in fact.In a no-holds barred conversation, Emma talks frankly about reshaping Comic Relief for a new generation, how being the mother of one of the country's most outspoken millennials, Scarlett Curtis, has changed her attitudes to just about everything, the contradictions of ageing (will dye, won't Botox) and why she will never ever deny her age. Note: this podcast was recorded before lockdown. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker, edited by Emily Sandford. I'd love to hear what you think - please let me know on twitter @sambaker or instagram @theothersambakerThe Shift: How I (lost and) found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker is out now in hardback and available to buy here.Find out more about Comic Relief here. TW: This episode discusses sexual assault and rape, please take care whilst listening. Today's guest is an actor, author, comedian and self-professed celebrity in North-West London. She grew up in the world of privilege and politics as the daughter of labour politician Alastair Campbell who has attended Hannah Montana concerts with Boris Johnson AND went to school with international pop sensation Dua Lipa. Her book, AMAZING DISGRACE, was described by Katherine Ryan as 'An outpouring of truth, wit, and beautiful comedic wisdom' and Scarlett Curtis as 'Bold, vulnerable and hilarious.' The front cover, which shows Grace riding a dick-shaped, should say everything you need to know about what's in store. On 6th August, during of her stint at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, she published an article in the Guardian, discussing a sexual assuault that had happened whilst in the US the previous year. The article spoke sensitively about assault, the topic of consent and a failing judicial system that cannot protect victims of rape (most notably women). The piece immediately garnered an outpouring of praise and if you haven't read it already, I urge you to pause this podcast and read it immediately. It is this vulnerable honesty surrounding not just the topic of intimacy, but destigmatising shame around sex, mental health, and the female body - that has made her so beloved amongst her fans. She is a loud, unapologetic “sex positive” , shame embracing comedian who hosts her own comedy night “the disgraceful club” and is taking her critically acclaimed show “A Show About Me(n)” on tour around the UK next year. Said about herself - “GRACE CAMPBELL IS THE FUNNIEST PERSON SHE HAS EVER MET. IF SHE WASN'T HER, SHE WOULD WANT TO BE HER. ” She's an utter disgrace that all women love and tory men are afraid of, healing the nation, one fanny fart at a time. Grace Campbell, it is a HUGEE pleasure to welcome you on to the podcast! ***Today's episode is in partnership with Deshall Beauty.*** Early listeners will know that the first EVER episode of this podcast was with my amazingly talented good friend Tanyia Ahmed, Founder of Deshall. This month she launched the website www.deshall-uk.com and I couldn't be more proud of her. Recently, doctors have recognised a strange phenomenon: patients turning up with mental health diagnoses in hand. And they all have something in common: social media.A search of the hashtag #depression on Instagram returns more than 25.3 million posts. On TikTok, the hashtag #BPD (borderline personality disorder) has 3.7 billion views, #ADHD has 14.5 billion views, and #DID (dissociative identity disorder) another 1.5 billion. This week, Media Storm asks why people are turning to TikTok for help with their mental health, what happens if you get inside an algorithm bubble, and why misdiagnosis can be so dangerous. Plus, host Helena Wadia shares her personal experiences with mental health for the first time. Author Scarlett Curtis and journalist Kamilah McInnis join in the studio, to discuss the media's portrayal of mental health, the dos and don'ts of reporting on suicide, and why it can feel so good to speak out.The episode is hosted by Mathilda Mallinson (@mathildamall) and Helena Wadia (@helenawadia), produced and researched by Zeynab Mohamed (@zeynabmohamed_) Guests:Zoe Aston @zoeastondotcom Thea Rickard @thearickard @thelastnightpod Lauren Bradley @jointheofficialsZeynab Mohamed @zeynabmohamed_ Jack Valentine @nunchukaroo17Scarlett Curtis @scarcurtis Kamilah McInnis @KamilahMcInnis Resources:Samaritans.org or call 116 123mind.org.uk @mindcharity Kiddycharts.com, resources to help with kids' mental healthangermanage.co.uk @angermanageuk @sensorystoriesbynicole Sources:Young Women Are Self-Diagnosing Personality Disorders, Thanks To TikTok, by Zeynab Mohamed https://www.elle.com/uk/life-and-culture/a39573245/young-women-self-diagnose-personality-disorder-tiktok/Media reporting on mental illness, violence and crime needs to change https://theconversation.com/media-reporting-on-mental-illness-violence-and-crime-needs-to-change-144856Mindframe guidelines on media reporting of severe mental illness in the context of violence and crime https://mindframemedia.imgix.net/assets/src/uploads/MF_Guidelines_Violence_and_Crime_spread_FINAL.pdfMind violence and mental health factsheet https://www.mind.org.uk/media-a/4968/violence-and-mental-health-mind-factsheet-2018.pdfGresham College Press Coverage of Mental Health and Suicide https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/press-coverage-mental-health-and-suicideTikTok and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Study of Social Media Content Quality https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/07067437221082854NHS failing patients with mental health problems https://www.ombudsman.org.uk/news-and-blog/news/nhs-failing-patients-mental-health-problemsMental health pressures in England, BMA https://www.bma.org.uk/advice-and-support/nhs-delivery-and-workforce/pressures/mental-health-pressures-data-analysisGet in touch:Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/mediastormpodor Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mediastormpodor Tiktok https://www.tiktok.com/@mediastormpodlike us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MediaStormPodsend us an email mediastormpodcast@gmail.comcheck out our website https://mediastormpodcast.com Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/media-storm. Scarlett is the Sunday Times Bestselling author of Feminists Don't Wear Pink and Other Lies and It's Not Okay To Feel Blue and Other Lies, and daughter of Richard Curtis, who has made some films you may know, including Love Actually. She says she's always felt like a bit of a sad cloud hanging over her otherwise happy family, due to her chronic illness and bouts of depression and anxiety. Here she shares her story. We also talk about the commodification of self care, how the pressure to have a 'solution' is helping nobody, and lots more. Read more of her work on ScarlettCurtis.com. As a young teenager Scarlett Curtis @scarcurtis had what should have been a very standard operation for scoliosis… but it left her in crippling pain. For a year, she was in pain every day, used a wheelchair for long periods, and couldn’t stand the feeling of any fabric touching her back. She was depressed, lonely, and withdrawn. Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong, and for a long time, many people even within the healthcare community made her feel like it was all in her head and she was making the whole thing up. Finally, after months of this, they gave her family the option for an “unnecessary” second surgery. It was during this procedure that they discovered there was a screw which had been pressing into her spine the entire time. As soon as they removed it, the pain went away. ...But the whole experience was traumatizing enough to a 14-15 year old girl that she then had what she describes as a complete breakdown, and didn’t leave the house for three years.   As a young adult, Scarlett decided to open up about her experiences with depression and anxiety, and started a lifestyle blog with a major focus on mental health. In addition to her own blog, Scarlett has written for The Guardian, Elle Magazine, The Times, and The Telegraph.   In 2017, Scarlett co-founded the feminist activist collective, @pinkprotest, seeking to redefine what activism means for young people, and to make activism accessible and fun.   Although the story of her adolescence is infuriating, it ultimately led to her remarkable ability to help others and be a catalyst for change. She helps inspire us to have conversations about mental health and to normalize that subject matter. Scarlett also represents that there is community available for all of us… and that through community, we can be and achieve anything we dream of.   Scarlett is on a mission to make the world a better, safer place. Make sure you follow her - and the Pink Protest - on social media to learn about how you can get involved!
