The Conservative Party of Canada will announce a new leader on Saturday evening. This comes after more than half a year of campaigning. Scott Aitchison, Roman Baber, Jean Charest, Leslyn Lewis and Pierre Poilievre were all competing for the job, but it's widely expected that Pierre Poilievre will win the race. The Globe's writer-at-large and longtime political columnist, John Ibbitson explains why Mr. Poilievre is the favourite to win, what it signals for the future of the Conservative Party and the broader implications to Canadian politics.
The Conservative leadership race will be finally coming to a close on Saturday when the winner will be announced in Ottawa. The safe bet is that Pierre Poilievre will win — perhaps even on the first ballot. But what will the results mean not only for the consensus front runner, but for Jean Charest, Leslyn Lewis, Roman Baber and Scott Aitchison?Does it matter if Poilievre wins on the first ballot? What's next for Charest should he lose? What will the results mean for Lewis and the social conservative wing of the party? And did Baber and Aitchison succeed in what they set out to do by launching their long-shot candidacies? To answer these questions and lots more, I'm joined this week by Tim Powers of Summa Strategies, Chad Rogers of Crestview Strategy and Stephanie Levitz of the Toronto Star.As always, in addition to listening to the episode in your inbox, at TheWrit.ca or on podcast apps like Apple Podcasts, you can also watch this discussion on YouTube. You'd be hard pressed to recognize them as on the same team, but that is the picture before us of the federal Conservative leadership race. Six in all have lined up to present their case as best choice to lead the party into the next election. Will they tack even further to the right? Hello and welcome to Unpublished TV. It's been a bare-knuckle brawl in two debates so far. The party reports a record 600,000 party memberships sold, giving those people a say in who will capture the leadership. First to declare was Carleton MP, Pierre Poilievre, in the middle of the trucker protest in Ottawa. He has grabbed the most attention and support thus far. But it's a long campaign with the vote not coming until September 10th in Ottawa. Our Unpublished Vote question asked: Which candidate will the Conservatives select? Our audience responded:Pierre Poilievre = 83.02%Jean Charest = 4.72%Leslyn Lewis = 3.30%Patrick Brown = 5.19%Roman Baber = 3.77%Scott Aitchison = 0% However you're watching and listening to our show, whether through our social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, or on our podcast channels—iTunes, GooglePlay, Spotify, iHeartRadio and more—we would like to remind you that you can “cast your vote” on this topic at http://Unpublished.vote, and then email your MP to tell them why.Guests: Warren Kinsella, Political commentator / former advisor PM Chretien Lori Turnbull, Director School of Public Administration, Dalhousie UniversityCristine de Clercy, Professor Political Science, Western UniversityMario Canseco, President Research CoRick Peterson, Co-founder, Centre Ice Conservatives
The At Issue panel discusses the state of the Conservative Party leadership race as they announce a record-breaking number of new members. Plus, the panellists unpack Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino's rationale for invoking the Emergencies Act.
For someone who's spent his career in politics, Conservative MP and leadership candidate Scott Aitchison doesn't have a lot of good things to say about politicians. He thinks elected leaders today are all about stoking division to bump their popularity with their base, as he tells Anthony in this latest instalment of Full Comment's discussions with federal Conservative leadership candidates. The result, Aitchison says, is that real people and concerns are being ignored in favour of cheap political wins, making us all a lot angrier. And, as he explains, he's running for party leader because he's determined to fix it. (Recorded May 26, 2022) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Conservative Leadership candidate Patrick Brown has accused his rival Pierre Poilievre of supporting conspiracy theorist Pat King and King's support for “white replacement theory.” In an email sent out to Conservatives by the Brown campaign, party member Dionne Duncan accused Poilievre of being “silent on this hate” and called on the Carleton MP to condemn “King for his support for white replacement theory.” True North's Andrew Lawton says Brown's tactics will not win him the Conservative leadership and that Brown's campaign is doing the dirty work for the left. It wasn't the nasty affair that we saw last week, but Wednesday's Conservative leadership debate still had its moments — and sound effects! It was like a game show, and like a game show there will only be one winner.Pierre Poilievre entered the debate as the front runner, chased by the likes of Jean Charest, Patrick Brown and Leslyn Lewis. Unlike the first debate, though, this was not a head-to-head match between Poilievre and Charest. Instead, there were entire stretches of the debate in which Poilievre could do nothing but stand on the sidelines as the audience sat riveted by the epic duel between Roman Baber and Scott Aitchison over their agreed positions on what to do with Canada's North. Can such a scattershot debate have much of an impact on this Conservative leadership contest? The At Issue panellists share their takeaways from this week's Conservative leadership debate and what it all means for the race ahead. Plus, the panel discusses whether candidates were able to reach Canadians inside and outside of the party.
Last night, six Conservative leadership hopefuls squared off in the first official debate of the race. Conservative MPs Pierre Poilievre, Leslyn Lewis and Scott Aitchison; former Quebec premier Jean Charest; Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown; and Ontario MPP Roman Baber shared the stage – and while they're all supposed to be playing for the same team, things still got a bit scrappy. Power and Politics host Vassy Kapelos was in Edmonton for the event and she joins Jayme Poisson to recap the night.
The tensest moments at the first Conservative leadership debate of the campaign came when candidates were debating which among them was the first and loudest supporter of the truckers' convoy to Ottawa earlier this year. Jean Charest called it an "illegal blockade," Scott Aitchison said it was a product of Justin Trudeau's failings, Roman Baber said we need to talk about mandates and not just the convoy, Pierre Poilievre said he supported the truckers, and Leslyn Lewis said Poilievre only stood up for them when it was politically convenient to do so. In this edition of The Andrew Lawton Show, Andrew breaks down the debate with Lewis and Baber, and discusses the curious absence of Patrick Brown.
