From Hope to the Secretary of State's office: Dr. Shirley Weber

We're joined today by Dr. Shirley Weber, California's Secretary of State. Governor Newsom appointed the four-term assembly member as Secretary of State in 2020 to fill the remainder of Alex Padilla's term when Padilla went to the US Senate. Voters elected her to a full term on November 8, 2022.  Serving as the state's chief elections officer is a natural fit for Weber, whose family left Arkansas during the Jim Crow era after her father was threatened for agitating in favor of voting rights. The family settled in southern California, where her mother became a longtime poll worker, with the family home often serving as a polling place.Hosts Rich Ehisen and Tim Foster spoke with Weber about administrating elections, why it takes so long to get results in some districts, and how to inspire young Californians to care as much about voting as Weber's family does. Just a few days ago, Eleni Kounalakis, the Lieutenant Governor of California, penned a communique to the California Secretary of State, Shirley Weber, urging maintenance of stringent legal barriers to keep the name of ex-President Donald Trump out of the California 2024 presidential primary ballot. This bold move came hot on the heels of a similar development in Colorado, where the state's Supreme Court ruled out Trump's appearance on its primary ballot in the upcoming elections. Given the gravitas of this decision, Kounalakis expressed her desire that California should follow the same path. Having analyzed the details of Anderson v. Griswold (2023 CO 63), a case which sealed Trump's fate on the Colorado ballot, Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis implored Weber to comb through every possible legal avenue to maintain equivalency between California and Colorado in this matter. Notably, her efforts seem to be geared toward protecting the sanctity of the ballot and the republican principles that the United States was founded upon. Indeed, she pinpoints the pivotal 'rule of law' as the driving force behind her motivations. Kounalakis stressed on the verdict declared in Colorado, referencing it as a blueprint for potential similar actions to be taken in California. She highlighted, conjecturally, that the Insurrection Clause could be brought into play – a clause declaring any insurrectionists as ineligible for presidential candidacy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Corbett boasts almost three decades of work experience in the nonprofit domain, and he brings a wealth of invaluable insights to the forefront. One key to a nonprofit's success lies in the underlying motivation of its board members who serve. We shall delve into board membership and explore the opportune moment for a board to consider engaging a consultant. This episode brims with essential information tailored to empower your nonprofit endeavors.   IN THIS EPISODE:   [01:30] Dr. Corbett discusses the Pivotal Group, how it evolved, and the secrets to an engaged board [06:30] Dr. Corbett talks about his childhood and how that has formed his love for non-profit work  [10:52] Dr. Corbett discusses the importance of a qualified, committed board member [15:18] Being a committee member before being a board member has value, and he talks about his favorite non-profits [23:24] Dr. Corbett discusses non-profits who compete and those who work collaboratively [27:33] What should a non-profit look for in a consultant    KEY TAKEAWAYS:    Nonprofits should look for board members who are truly passionate about the organization rather than just friends of members or someone willing to donate their money but not their time.  The pivotal question to ask a person who wants to become a board member is “why?” You may need to ask the question several times until you reach a meaningful reason.  A great recipe for getting to know your community is to join a church, join a gym and mentor a youth.    RESOURCES:   For Profit Law Group - Website Nonprofit Counsel - Website Nonprofit Counsel - Instagram Nonprofit Counsel - Linkedin The Pivotal Group - Website Dr. Lyn Corbett - LinkedIn   GUEST BIOGRAPHY:    As a senior executive with over 20 years of leadership experience, Dr. Lyn Corbett has developed innovative strategies to strengthen business, non-profit, and government organizations. What drew a career educator, on the verge of retirement, into state politics? Creating Citizens, The Commonwealth Club's education initiative, has invited California Secretary of State Shirley Weber to talk with high school students about why their voice matters and how to become civically engaged at a young age. After 40 years as a professor at San Diego State University, Shirley Weber was appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom to become California's 31st secretary of state. Secretary Weber is California's first Black secretary of state and only the fifth African American to serve as a state constitutional officer in California's 170-year history. Secretary Weber, in conversation with KQED's Annelise Finney, will discuss the duties and responsibilities of a secretary of state, the importance of voting, and the importance of civil discourse. She will also explore the power that young people have in the democratic process—wether they realize it or not. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Voters can easily be misled by a narrative in a headline that can be lacking other pertinent information. California's secretary of state, Dr. Shirley N. Weber, explains in detail why the 105,000+ votes not counted in June are not by the mistake of the voter registrar's office; voters have to pay closer attention to signatures on the outside envelopes, and dates of when the ballot is dropped in a US postal mailbox.

Direct democracy is supposed to be a people's process, allowing everyday citizens to enact their own ideas for laws or constitutional amendments. But does California's system live up to that promise? Qualifying a measure for the ballot costs so many millions of dollars that only the richest people and interests can bring their proposals forward. Elected and appointed officials have considerable sway over the process, and routinely use it for their own aims. And voters have little information, and few opportunities to deliberate, as they make decisions about complicated proposals that, once approved, are very difficult to fix or change. How should recall and ballot initiatives change, and what reforms does the state seem likely to enact? California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, Public Policy Institute of California president Mark Baldassare, and Initiative & Referendum Institute president John Matsusaka, author of Let the People Rule, visit Zócalo to explore what it would take to bring more democracy into California's direct democracy. If we want teens to grow up with a healthy attitude, and practice safe sex, then parents and teachers need to feel comfortable talking about this complex and emotionally charged topic. There's no shame going in-store to buy a Sex Toys, but many people still feel uncomfortable discussing sexual preferences and fetishes with sales assistants, or would rather not go shopping for adult sex toys in public.
