When you flipped the calendar from December to January, what were you certain was going to happen this year? Maybe a family vacation, wedding, simply going to the store as often as you needed! And then...  Borders closed. Events were canceled. Online learning became the norm. Dining room tables, pets and children replaced offices and coworkers. Today, Janine Urbaniak Reid shares her own reluctant journey with unexpected chaos - hers is in the form of mothering a son with cancer. But the truth she shares is applicable to all of us navigating these uncertain times:   This crisis can pull away the distractions and leave you with focus on only the essentials; clarity on what truly matters.  Now that is a gift.  SHOW NOTES: At a young age, Janine learned to hide secrets of abuse + alcoholism from others.  "Every big transformative moment comes from the simple word help." Janine hoped that her overprotective parenting style would protect them from similar trauma she faced as a child while also re-parenting herself. Her youngest, Mason, was in kindergarten when his hand began to shake before suffering migraine headaches. They'd later learn this neurologist misdiagnosed this "normal tremor". Boze Grozi: What did you do to make God so mad at you?  Tree roots under a sidewalk: Mason's slow-growing tumor had wrapped itself around essential brain structures making it irremovable.  "We are ordinary people called to do extraordinary things and push beyond our limits." "I'd rather be anything but powerless." While orbiting an unpredictable tumor, Mason faced numerous setbacks and Janine saw it as a balance board of surrender yet do everything possible. Courage is not feeling like Wonder Woman. Courage is asking for help, surrendering and prayer. "I don't want to live a life I hate while living circumstances that I do." Instead of waiting for a crisis to be over, Janine found simple ways to find God + take care of herself including calling friends + going on walks. "Love is always enough. Strength is enough. You are enough." Get Janine Urbaniak Reid's book The Opposite of Certainty. JANINE URBANIAK REID'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Willams and anything by Anne Lamott. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Fearlessness. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. Katherine + Jay Wolf: Finding Joy While Suffering (ep. 258)

Does your life look different than you imagined it would? In 2008, Katherine + Jay Wolf were newlyweds and parents to their six-month-old son when the unimaginable happened. Just 26 years old, Katherine suffered a massive brainstem stroke. After a rare, life-saving surgery, Katherine spent nearly two months in a coma-like state. With her faithful husband Jay by her side, Katherine had to relearn how to breathe, talk, eat... and eventually thrive. While no one wants terrible pain or unbearable tragedy, this couple is a tremendous example of finding hope in the midst of the storm. Today, Katherine + Jay Wolf remind us that suffering isn’t the end of our story, but the beginning of a new story. SHOW NOTES: At 22, Katherine + Jay tied the knot in an unusually perfect November day in Georgia before seeking adventure together in California.   April 21, 2008: When their first child was just 6 months old, Katherine suffers massive brain stem stroke without any warning and does not wake up from a coma-like state for almost 2.5 months. As a stroke survivor, it was the brave surgeon who performed a meticulous 16-hour surgery that gave Katherine the ability to sustain life, in spite of some disabilities. Every year, they celebrate April 22 as Katherine's second birthday.  "I can't eat. I can't walk. I can't take care of my son. I can't do anything. I'm a mistake and I should not even be here." - Katherine Wolf after failing her ninth swallow test. Our lives are all stories that have many chapters and much complexity. Fully live into the story we have, not the one we wish we had. Jay credits faith + community to lift them up in healing + beyond to flourishment. "It was a surreal vision, a waking dream, a stark reminder that perhaps in the breaking of precious things, something even more precious than we can imagine might be unleashed. Perhaps in the breaking, we can find the healing we long for." Live Inspired community member Therese asked: how do you cope with the uncertainty/fear of the future and what your health holds? Live Inspired community member Robbie asked: What advice would you give healthcare professionals - specifically those who work in the rehabilitation field? Since they credit neurosurgeon, Dr. Nestor Gonzalez, in saving Katherine's life three times, they named their second son after him. Get a copy of Katherine + Jay's latest book Suffer Strong. Learn more about Katherine + Jay's story here. KATHERINE + JAY'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Katherine: Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Jay: Music + childhood rhythms.  3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A phone or iPad that has our photos... Google Cloud! 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Jay: Mother Teresa. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Katherine: When I was relearning how to walk, my father-in-law would say, "You just have to win. Do whatever is necessary." 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Jay: Enjoy that flexibility while it lasts. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Katherine: Joyfully rebelling against how our world, our culture, views health and success; Jay: He gave his life and unstoppable goodwill towards people in need and people he loved. *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! How do we react when an unwanted diagnosis appears? Or when adversity arises with a child, a loved one or for ourselves? How do we move forward with compassion, courage, love, respect, possibility, and certainty that the best remains in front of us? Dr. April Jones holds many professional credentials. Yet it’s her personal journey that makes her an authority on transforming pain into purpose. Before her son's 2nd birthday, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer... and April + her husband were faced with an agonizing, life-changing decision. April's heartfelt journey + uplifting story is sure to help those seeking to turn struggle into strength! SHOW NOTES At 16 years old, April met future husband Billy. He offered encouragement when she wasn’t sure if she believed in herself + they had similar goals and sense of adventure to grow as a person outside of their small town Embracing change: Billy and her married at 19 + unexpectedly became pregnant 3 months later. “We can always learn from our feelings, even if we don’t like them. We control how we react to situations.” Tyler’s cancer: Her oldest son was almost 2 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. February 2, 2004: April makes the life-changing decision to amputate Tyler’s leg, and cancer, to achieve full remission. “Sometimes it takes losing everything we thought was important to us to find that we have everything we actually need. Sometimes we have to hit rock bottom before we will force ourselves to finally look up.” Some of their greatest supporters were a couple named Todd + Dawn. After losing their son to cancer, they supported other families dealing with life-threatening childhood illnesses and became an inspiration to many families. Little reminders were helpful + impactful: Support through First Baptist Church in South Haven was a reminder that they weren’t alone in Tyler’s fight. The support from the community celebrating Tyler’s life during his Make-a-Wish grant was life-changing. Advice for others in a similar situation: Have hope. Allow yourself the freedom to feel what you feel + know that’s okay. “Life is fleeting. Just like the good moments are fleeting, so are the bad.” “At some point, what your current situation is, is going to be the story that inspires someone else or helps you relate to someone else so that they can listen to what you have to say.” Tyler was 2018 Paralympic High School All American for Track and Field. “How someone treats you says nothing at all about you and everything about them.” “Whether you are proud of where you came from, ashamed of it or pretend it does not matter, you either let where you came from propel you forward or hold you back. But the good thing is this: you get to choose.” Get a copy of Dr. April Jone's book No Mess, No Message here. Are you or someone you know dealing expected diagnosis or illness? Why do we expect kids to do things we don't or can't do? In the same way that I can not expect my kids to have control of their phone usage if I don't have control of my phone usage. I can't expect my kids to process their emotions if I can't process mine. In the same way that I can't expect my kids to choose food that is healthy for their bodies if I don't choose healthy foods for my body. I can not teach my kids how to regulate their emotions if I don't know how to regulate mine. In order for our kids to be able to process their emotions from a strong, empowered place, we parents have to know how to do that. Yet whoa, if you’re anything like me, I did not know how to manage my own emotions in effective, healthy ways. I certainly knew how to manage my emotions in ineffective, unhealthy ways: over eating, drinking, blaming others, procrastinating, etc. But how to process them in helpful ways? Enter this podcast! In a nutshell, as chiropractors and physical therapists, we often times we get phone calls from possible new patients asking questions: How much for a quick adjustment? Do you take my insurance? Do you do XYZ soft tissue work? These patients are really wanting one thing... to feel better. In my interpretation, their questions are based upon what they believe to be barriers to their success, but really the only barriers is themselves. Over the past several weeks, I have felt prompted over and over to share more of my own story of growing closer to God and learning how to rely on Him. What I am sharing in this episode is the hardest time I have experienced in my life. It revolves around a lengthy trial that went on for years and hasn't totally ended. Share Your Story I always hesitate to share about hardships I have experienced. I know so many who have gone through so much more than I have. However, as I learned from Danelle Beckstrand in episode 19 of the podcast: "Pain is pain and hurt is hurt," and "Humanity is connected through trial." I am learning there is power in being vulnerable and sharing our story and ultimately, part of ourselves. My trials are not the same as yours, however sharing what we learned and how we were blessed during our hardest times allows us to help each other. Lessons Learned In the episode, I share some of the lessons I learned during this difficult time including: How God is aware of me and my family in big and little things. "If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you're getting." (Stephen R. Covey) Why I have to act for the Lord to help me. Turning my trials over to God and not relying solely on myself is possible. Trial Helps Us Grow After I recorded this episode, I found this quote by Orson F. Whitney, an early apostle of the church, that describes what I have experienced. “No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility. All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called the children of God … and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire.” I don't know completely why I have felt prompted to share this. It's probably more for me than anyone else. However, I hope you will find something from this episode that will help . If anything, I hope you will be able to reflect on the the lessons you have learned as well as the blessings you have received from the hardest time in your life.   Show Notes At the end of the episode I mentioned the workbook you can download called Five Ways to Become a More Spiritually Minded Mom. Get access to the workbook by clicking HERE. Tessa Brown is my guest today on the podcast. She's a wife and a mom to two boys ages 2 and 4. She's also an artist and has a beautiful Instagram accountwhere she shows her incredible talent of artwork depicting motherhood and Jesus Christ. She has learned to embrace the spiritual gifts God has given her and has found a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ as she pleads for help in becoming the mother He wants her to be. Show Recap Tessa relates the story of Moana facing the lava monster and how this story helped her in motherhood to know who she is and who God wants her to be. Tessa tells how she found painting early in motherhood to give her a place to focus so she could go back to her family and give more. Growth Mindset Tessa has developed a growth mindset about motherhood and shares some doable ways she has developed that mindset in her life. Her advice to other moms is to figure out what makes you feel love for yourself, for God and for your kids and then to be aware of those things and seek them out. Tessa says to notice the times when you feel love and focus on those things. Love For Tessa, what always speaks the loudest in motherhood to her is to just love her children. She knows the only thing that lasts is love. What motivate is love. "Christ makes me feel that I am more than I am. ... I want my kids to feel that from me." Tessa shares beautifully how she developed a deeper relationship with the Savior. She used to picture Christ standing over her shaking his head as a disappointed coach. Now she views Him as a cheerleader and friend who encourages her throughout her day, no matter what has happened. Tessa feels it is important not to compare the way you show love to the way another mother shows love. "You have a divine way to love your kids." Own it. Artwork Through her artwork, Tessa hopes mothers will feel love and that they are enough. "I would love my art to bring mothers back to those moments when love was really all that matters because I feel that really is all that matters. If you do a lot of things wrong, but you get the love part right, I think you and your kids will have a great relationship. That's what we're striving for." Spiritual Gifts Throughout the interview, Tessa talked about spiritual gifts and how a mother can use the gifts she's been given in motherhood.  We had a great discussion about owning your gifts and not being afraid to claim them. Tessa shares a great insight on using what you've been given and why don't have to be "everything" to your kids. Show Notes At the beginning of the episode I shared how YOU can be part of a future episode of the podcast. Each month I will be asking listeners to share their answer to a specific question about motherhood and spirituality. If you want to participate in the November episode, here's how to do it: At your convenience, call this number 480-525-7145. Leave a message starting with your name and where you are from. For example, "Hi, this is Darla from Arizona." Give your answer to the question: How have you seen and felt God as your partner in motherhood?" Feel free to share a specific story or experience. Please keep your answer to under 3 minutes so I can share as many answers as possible. Submit your answer/message by Sunday, October 28th. If you're hearing or reading this after the deadline, call the number anyway to hear the current question and give your answer. Stephen interviews "The Gratitude Guy", Terry Josiah Sharpe: Combat Veteran & CEO dedicates his life to one thing: inspiring the creation of social change in our world. In 2014, TerryJosiah founded the Creative Agency MusicLifeChange to cultivate social revolutions through the Music, Education (Life), & Philanthropy (Change) – through the foundation and values of gratitude. Born into an unstable family life, he quickly learned balance in a chaotic world; writing became paramount and music became an essential piece of his joy. He cultivated both; applying them to reach, connect and inspire like‐minded individuals. At 18 years old, TerryJosiah turned his desire to create change into action when he enlisted into the United States Army six days after the terror attacks on 9/11. He served two tours in Iraq and was an integral member in the Battle of Fallujah. After an honorable discharge in 2007, he attended UTEP where he studied music and creative writing. In 2010 he won College Songwriter of the Year (TX) and was the first college student to repeat the award in 2011. As recognition grew, multiple independent record labels approached him and he ultimately chose to sign with Above The Notes – where he was able to focus on writing and music creation behind the scenes. He received his BA in both Music History and Creative Writing from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2012, and within two years founded MusicLifeChange. As a millennial visionary, he understands the need for spreading a positive message through new and innovative ways. http://musiclifechange.com   Show Notes At 32 years old, becoming homeless was the last thing Terry would worry about, until it happened. That moment in his life where he was sleeping on couches or in his car, there was a mind shift. Rather than thinking that life was shitting on him and blaming others or moping, he found gratitude. At least he had a car to sleep in. At least he had a couch to sleep on. At least he was still  ALIVE! Terry’s complete mind shift has changed his life forever and now he shares his insight on living a life of gratitude, including some action steps you can start today! He is dedicated to helping others change their life through his Gratitude Ambassador Program, which will completely shift your perception forever.   Cliffnotes - How he became “The Gratitude Guy" - At 32 years old he lost his house and was homeless for about three weeks. He was upset. In his car, bothers couch, or girlfriends parents house. He has kids and it was rough for him. - Gratitude showed him “how many homeless actually have a couch or car to sleep in?” 32 years old was the day he became the gratitude guy. Complete perspective shift. -We don’t recognize how many self inflicted wounds we create. - Everything that happens, either we learn from it or get upset from it. - Whatever is going wrong, he takes three deep breathes. Then thinks about losing it. Now he feels the optimism of having it. Does this three times a day with three different objects. 5 minutes each / 15 minutes a day - You have to change your mindset and really look at the good things regardless of situation - Gratitude is a decision you are going to have to make. - As a person of gratitude, you are not immune to shit going wrong in your life. If you use gratitude as your foundation, then when life throws you a curve ball and tries to knock you down, you’re balanced. - Quote: “If it’s not gonna effect you in five years, don’t spend more than five minutes on it.” - Quote: “Gratitude is the trampoline that bounces you into happiness.” - Quotes: "If I do something for me and someone recognizes it, its infectious" - Quote: “Gratitude is the virtue that sustains the temperature of our happiness.”   Promotions - MusicLifeChange.com ——> The gratitude revolution. - Launching gratitude ambassador program April 28th - 60 day program to get on the track of “Finding Happiness." - Turn your gratitude on autopilot - Scholarship Opportunities - "Gratitude Song", translated in multiple languages. - Gratitude guy/gal shirts - Upcoming event to help 50 under privileged males learn entrepreneurship and business Contact Instagram https://www.instagram.com/the_gratitude_guy/
