CX Is More Important Than Ever! Shep Hyken interviews Simon Harrison, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Avaya. They discuss the importance of creating a personalized and effortless customer experience. Top Takeaways: · Your customers aren't just comparing you to your direct competitors anymore. They are comparing you to the best. For example, customers may ask, Why can't your app be as good as the Peloton app? Why can't your speed be as quick as Amazon's? · If there is a choice between customer experience and the product, CX will usually win. You can have the best product, but if you don't create an experience around it that works for the customer, they will find another provider. · Our experience ambitions have changed in all aspects of how we live our life, how we keep fit, how we eat, how we shop, or how we travel. Companies need to aim for composability, propose solutions to create the right kind of experiences, and make sure that people feel good about what they do. · To realize the benefits of personalization, suggesting what people want and how they want it should be part of how we engage our customers, staff, colleagues, and everyone in our ecosystem. · We must personalize our digital experiences until it rivals the person-to-person experience. Customers need to feel like you are talking to them, even in digital transactions. Quote: "In this challenging experience economy, we need employees who are connected and empowered. Creating great experiences is enabled by employee experiences. They need to have great experiences themselves." About: Simon Harrison is the Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Avaya, leading the global marketing function to engage with new and existing customers and partners, driving adoption of the company's software solutions, and supporting Avaya as one of the leading player in a dynamic digital communications market. Claims that Russia is using the high gas price as a political weapon are "drivel", according to President Vladimir Putin. His comments come as there is intense focus on the energy markets. Energy prices in the UK, Europe and Asia have hit record highs in recent weeks triggering inflation concerns. The International Energy Agency says that targets to limit global warming are in very real danger of not being met. Their chief energy economist Tim Gould explains what's going wrong and we get reaction from Simon Harrison, head of strategy at consultancy Mott MacDonald, which advises governments and businesses on how to move to cleaner energy sources. Also in the programme, China's banning of Bitcoin mining has prompted what some have called the great mining migration. Alex De Vries, who runs the Digieconomist blog, explains where the miners are going and how much energy are they consuming. Plus, the BBC's Frey Lindsay reports on what's being called a housing affordability crisis in Australia, where the cost of buying a home has risen sharply relative to what people earn. And our regular commentator Stephanie Hare makes the case for actively using our senses to transform our experience of the world of work. All this and more discussed with our two guests throughout the show: in Taiwan, Samson Ellis, Taipei bureau chief for Bloomberg News and Takara Small, technology reporter for CBC News in Toronto, Canada. The International Energy Agency has called for trillions of investment in clean energy. It argues that it is the only way that the world's climate targets can be met. Tim Gould is chief energy economist at the IEA and talks us through its latest World Energy Outlook, and we get reaction from Simon Harrison, head of strategy at consultancy Mott MacDonald, which advises governments and businesses on how to move to cleaner energy sources. Also in the programme, the BBC's Frey Lindsay reports on what's being called a housing affordability crisis in Australia, where the cost of buying a home has risen sharply relative to what people earn. Plus, our regular commentator Stephanie Hare makes the case for actively using our senses to transform our experience of the world of work. Josh talks to Simon Harrison, SVP and CMO of Avaya about a wide range of topics, including the importance of grabbing attention early, the power of educating your consumers, and how company culture is the foundation of good marketing. Building a total experience is the key to good business, and that starts with marketing, but it also means that everything is, in a way, a part of the marketing. Do you remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? Here's a quick refresher: a tortoise and a hare were having a race, which, you assume, would be pretty lopsided in favor of the hare. But the hare was so focused on showing off that he lost sight of the ultimate goal: winning the race. Why do I bring that up? Well, because it reminds me of a phrase you may have heard in the business world, that “marketing is meant to be remarkable.” You may have also heard that companies are always aiming to “surprise and delight.” The crux of what both of these phrases are talking about is really that companies are focused on creating experiences for consumers that they will remember forever. According to Simon Harrison, CMO of Avaya, that's also the completely wrong way to be operating your business.Avaya is a software solutions company that many people may not have on their radar, but it is steadily bringing software solutions to 90% of Fortune 500 companies, has a presence in 190 countries, and it is effortlessly improving customer experiences. How is Avaya succeeding? Simon tells us on this episode of Business X factors.Main Takeaways: Effortless Trumps Delight: Customers may be delighted to be offered a freebie like chocolates on their pillows at a hotel, but loyalty or repeat business does not come from these ‘feel good' moments. Customers have a preference for organizations who make life easy for them, solve their problems and create an effortless experience and will return to them over and over before they go back to a company that did one nice thing for them one time. Everybody Loves a Story: A powerful way of persuading people is to unite an idea with an emotion and the best way to do that is by telling a story. People connect with stories and it builds familiarity. Ditch the PowerPoint slides and the charts and tell stories that engage and are remembered. Design/ Reach for Utopia: Joseph Pine and James Gilmore coined the phrase ‘Experience Economy' way back in 1998 and they have since made an even stronger case for experiences as the critical link between a company and its customers. To design solutions to create the ultimate customer experience in a booming customer experience economy, imagine a utopia, a moment or experience when there is a perfect match between what a customer wants and what a business offers. And then empower staff to come up with transformational customer experiences. ---Business X factors is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by Hyland. Episode Notes:Avaya SVP and CMO Simon Harrison joins The Customer Experience Show to discuss how being a product manager has helped him become a successful customer experience leader, what the future of CX looks like as the world transitions into an experience economy, and much more.3 Takeaways:Before they can improve the CX experience, CX leaders need to make sure they understand every detail of the customer journey. One key to creating a great customer experience is listening to customers and learning from what they are saying and what they want and need.Trust is an important part of building a great CX. Leaders need to train their employees how to create a great experience, and then empower and trust them to do the right thing.Key Quotes:“We have a relentless focus. Effectively, if you have engaged and empowered staff, they enjoy great experiences and that directly translates to our customers having great experiences.”“It's whether you decide the ambition to change things is significant enough for you to push on into a role where, it may be out of your comfort zone, but you could make a difference. I took the leap and worked hard to become perhaps somewhat of a success as a product manager.”“As a CXO or someone that's passionate about customer experiences and in a leadership role in a company, I'm really keen to talk about the customer journey and understand more about how to make people feel better. It's about memorable experiences rather than trying to sell them something.”Thank you to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by IBM. Welcome to the second part of our European special on the Blood Red channel to see how the leading clubs on the continent are going to react to Liverpool winning the Champions League. In part one, we spoke to writers who cover Ligue 1 in France and the Bundesliga in Germany, and if you missed the show, you can listen to it by clicking HERE. But in part two Paul Wheelock picks up the phone to Simon Harrison, a Spanish football expert who covers La Liga for BT Sport and the i newspaper, who tells us all about the fallout from Barcelona’s humbling at Anfield, Real Madrid’s incredible spending spree, and how it is an end of an era for Atletico Madrid. But we start by speaking to Italian football writer John Solano, who is the editor of the excellent RomaPress.Net website. Now John got Liverpool fans very excited with what he had to say about Alisson Becker prior to the goalkeeper's arrival at Anfield in July last year. So, naturally we started our conversation by talking about the brilliant Brazilian – before moving on to discuss what will be a summer of transition for Serie A’s top clubs. Like our podcasts? There’s a saying doing the rounds at the moment that data is the new oil and analytics the new engine, so you’d think that if this is where the opportunity is at, and given how much we are involved in generating and reporting the data & insights, then why are some of our skills as finance professionals only just touching the surface of what’s possible and so threatening our ability to remain relevant and continue to be involved in solving meaningful problems for our organisations. These are just some of topics our guest mentor Simon Harrison and I cover together in today’s episode as well as: • The surprising skillset Finance professionals don’t quite yet have and the simple practical things we can do to improve this. • The issue with educational silos impacting our ability to pick up the necessary skills to get hired and create value in our organisations. • The main areas to be open minded on what IT can teach us on. • We discuss why when it comes to data Finance needs to be more an art than a science. • Why SQL is important and why we both still love Excel. • At the end an important development challenge we lay down for our audience.
