Sonny Mayo started his professional music career in 1995 with the band Snot (Geffen Records) and, in 1998, went on to play in the band Amen (Virgin, Roadrunner Records). Having been in rehab as a teenager, Sonny continued to struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction while touring the world and writing/recording albums. On occasion he was issued ultimatums from his fellow band mates, which would bring brief periods of abstinence, but would inevitably lead to another relapse. Spiraling ever downward, Sonny hit bottom in late 2001.Desperate for sobriety, Sonny sought and received the help he needed in 12 Step fellowships. In January 2002, with less than 30 days sober, he went on his first clean/sober tour in Australia, where Sonny attended 12 Step meetings and began laying the foundation for a whole new experience as a professional musician, and has maintained sobriety ever since. In late 2002 he joined his friend, Wes Geer, as a touring guitarist in the band (hed)P.E. and, in 2005, joined the band Sevendust (TVT, Warner/Asylum Records).Sonny facilitates virtual Rock to Recovery® sessions, serving Air Force Wounded Warriors (AFW2), Semper Fi Fund, and other non profit organizations. He is also the lead recovery coach for R2R Companions, a Breathwork healer, and plays guitar with the Rock to Recovery® band, Sacred Sons.

When Sonny Mayo was growing up, he had tendencies of manic depression often. He started using drugs and felt like this released him from the anxieties and problems he had in his life. This led him on the path of addiction, and he heavily relied on it; mentally and physically. Sonny got into treatment at the age of 16 after abusing Dexedrine with a friend of his. He wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, and pushed everyone that cared about him away. One of his lowest lows around this time was smoking meth in an airplane bathroom during an international flight. One night he came home to his mother high on acid, claiming he had a message for her and that she should treat him like the messiah. The next day, he was in rehab. He hated it at first & didn't feel like he belonged there. But after a while, it started to connect with him and he finally committed to getting better. This week Scott sits down with John and Mikey from Snot for an epic conversation. Snot's history is tragically short lived but their influence lives on to this day. Formed in California in 1995, the group took off quickly on the strength of their 'Get Some' album. Tragically, it was all cut short with the untimely death of vocalist Lynn Strait in 1998. If you're a Snot fan, you'll get a lot of great details on the band in this episode. From John and Mikey's first meeting in 1994, the guys share the full history of how things developed for Snot.Snot's influences lie between punk rock and funk. Mikey shares the story of what bands influenced their sound and how it came together from there.Other topics covered include how Lynn Strait was discovered, Sonny Mayo's addition to the band, the Santa Barbara music scene, recording at Longview Farms, getting big in Los Angeles, shows with System of a Down, Sevendust, an insane Ozzfest story, the 'Strait Up' tribute album and much more!We hope you enjoy Scott's talk with John and Mikey from Snot and SHARE with a friend!
We've covered some absolute guff from the 90s on Broken Records, Steve and Remfry's collective favourite period of time for music but it's always led to some compelling, nostalgia-filled conversations and this week's 90s entry is no exception. Stop, collaborate and listen cause Vanilla Ice's on the mic and he's jizzin out 13 truth bombs that are going to be Hard To Swallow. Released by Republic Records in 1998, Hard to Swallow is the third studio album by American rapper Vanilla Ice. It proved to be a shallow attempt to move away from hip hop and discard his former pop image. Instead, Hard to Swallow featured what he described as "skate rock", a fusion of heavy metal, punk rock and hip hop. The album features appearances from Amen vocalist Casey Chaos, Bloodhound Gang vocalist Jimmy Pop, and Insane Poetry front man Cyco. Session musicians included drummer Shannon Larkin, keyboardist Scott Borland, and Snot guitarist Sonny Mayo. Oh and it's produced by Ross Robinson, the nu-metal superstar producer who said that working on this album was “the most punk-rock thing you could do." But was it? Or was it simply a sticky, premature gag of an album?
Where does Strait Up, the tribute album to Snot singer, Lynn Strait rate in comparison to other metal compilations? Is it as good as Chef Aid or Freddy vs Jason? That's the question we'll be talking about on this episode. To be honest, the answer probably won't surprise you. But I was super surprised hearing Staind compared to the Pixies - such an obvious comparison that I have been regretting all the times I could have dropped that truth bomb at dinner parties. There's a bunch of Sonny Mayo love on top of a very difficult question to answer: Who's shoes are bigger to fill? Freddie Mercury or Wayne Static? Did you know music can be beneficial for finding healing and freedom from your addiction? Our guest this week helps people unlock their creativity and freely express how they feel emotionally through the gift of music. This week, we are talking with Sonny Mayo, Rock To Recovery Brand Ambassador, Board Member, Program Administrator, and Recovery Coach. Sonny is a music interventionist with Rock to Recovery, an active member of AA, and a Breathwork Healer. On occasion he was issued ultimatums from his fellow bandmates, which would bring brief periods of abstinence, but would inevitably lead to another relapse. In late 2002 he joined his friend, Wes Geer, as a touring guitarist in the band (hed)P.E. and, in 2005, joined the band Sevendust (TVT, Warner/Asylum Records). In 2009, Sonny attended the Recording Institute Of Technology at Musicians Institute in Hollywood and received a certification in audio engineering. He is a touring guitarist with the band Ugly Kid Joe, a guitar teacher, as well as a music producer, songwriter, and mixer. In this episode, Sonny shares how he often felt an intense longing and sadness in early childhood and how he self-medicated with drugs and alcohol to numb the pain at a young age. We discuss why the “fake it til’ you make it” mantra lacks clarity for those in recovery and what it means to find true freedom and healing. Topics Discussed The power of meditation, yoga, and breath work How music helps soothe the soul (and helps with addiction recovery) The many benefits of the original 12-Step Program How traumatic experiences impact the way we view the world Why inner-healing and self-love is an important step towards recovery Connect with Sonny Mayo Instagram (Personal) - https://www.instagram.com/sonny_mayo/ Instagram (Business) - https://www.instagram.com/rocktorecovery/ Additional Resources Rock to Recovery - https://rocktorecovery.org Rock to Recovery Companions - https://r2rcompanions.com Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Connect with Positive Recovery Centers online Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Contact Positive Recovery CentersIf you or someone you know needs help, visit the website or call the number below to schedule an assessment. Sonny Mayo is one of my favorite people I've met and when I say ever I mean ever. When I simply think about him I usually feel better and smile. That's his way. We met, like many of my acquaintances and friends, on tour under rock circumstances and we've stayed in touch. Sonny has been in a number of great touring bands but has most recently been focused on sharing his energy with Rock to Recovery, a non-profit that works with treatment facilities by using music and songwriting to help heal people struggling with and recovering from all kinds of addictions. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/support
"It was only Morgan (Rose, drums) and John (Connoly, guitar)... there wasn't a band yet", recalled Sevendust vocalist Lajon Witherspoon of his first introduction to what were to become his bandmates for the next 25 years. "They came to a bar I was working at - and this is a true story - and it was Morgan, John and Vinnie (Vince Hornsby, bass) and John had never played guitar, he was a drummer, he never even had a guitar strap! (laughs) They said man, we really love what you do and I used to always go and see those guys jam - except for John, he was in Piece Dogs and played drums for them. They were signed to Energy Records so I was already impressed with him, he was a signed artist already, but he never played guitar so that was a little bit weird (laughs). It was great and Vinnie and Morgan were in the band Snake Nation and they almost got signed by RCA records but the A & R guys signed Dave Matthews instead - which I think was a great move for him (laughs). So these guys showed up in a spot I was working at and I was playing on a Monday night in a little band I had and they said they'd really like to get together and to come down to the rehearsal place but it wasn't a band. It was just us jamming and that's what started it. That's what started the seed of Sevendust right there, in that room and we wrote 'Black' and we wrote a song called 'Crazy' and we were so excited about this little band that we had that we went out to a local bar and we just jammed and everyone showed up because they knew us from previous bands and we only played those two songs and they asked us to get up there again so we played the same two again (laughs). We rocked it, man, so it was like, we have to put a band together and that's what we did; that's where it started".Rising from the Atlanta music scene in 1994, Sevendust garnered their reputation the old fashioned way through relentless touring and taking their music to the masses. So much so that Witherspoon jokes that fans in their hometown weren't sure whether or not the band had fulfilled their dream or merely faded into the shadows of many others that had followed the same path."We were just on the scene in Atlanta", he laughed. "That was the only place we ever played and then we got a record deal and I remember leaving from the Midtown Music Festival and we never went back to Atlanta for a year or two because we were on the road. It was like we got thrown from our home scene to the world. It was like wow, we've left Atlanta and never went back. I don't think they ever realised what we were doing out there on the road because we'd been gone so long (laughs). We'd really been working and paying dues - and we still are - but we went out there in a van and toured the world and went from a van to several vans to several R.V's! One time I remember the bus pulling up and we all said wow, all our rock and roll dreams have come true but in reality, the nightmare had just begun. We didn't know that yet but (laughs). It's been an incredible journey. We started in Atlanta with bands like Sunk Mojo, and The Black Crowes were coming out of there but we weren't really that big yet. We were growing. We knew that we had a good thing going on and once we hit the road it kind of hit man and we just never stopped"!Sevendust released their self-titled debut in 1997 and while it is widely respected now hardly set the music world on fire then, selling poorly in its first week. Rather than let that dampen the young band's spirits, Witherspoon says that the members were largely oblivious to the fact it had failed to ignite."No way, no way"! he reiterated when pressed if it was an issue. "Not for me. I was 21 years old, I had a record deal, we didn't care about the numbers. I don't even... not even today. It's still just an honour to be relevant in the music business when it's so crazy and you can be here one minute and then you're gone so for me it's that same feeling of I'm still here, you know? I really didn't look at the numbers back then. I don't care about them. I just felt wow, we're signed, we're touring the world and going to places we've never been before and people were singing our songs back to us! We were on Ozzfest all of a sudden with Ozzy and Lemmy from Motorhead was my buddy. That was what I was thinking about back then and getting back in the studio and making another album. Back then we didn't care about what was going on in the business, we just cared about the art".In 2004 Sevendust put out what was at the time a groundbreaking release from a metal band. They recorded and packaged a live DVD/CD set named Southside Double Wide: Acoustic Live from a show recorded at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. It was ambitious, innovative, and risky, showcasing a softer side to the band and their music that ran the risk of alienating their diehard metal fans. It was a sign of a band at the peak of their powers, unafraid to bare their musical soul, and was to become a worldwide hit with both hardcore fans and those seeking something a little fresh and adventurous."That's something we come back to from time to time", Witherspoon shrugged. "A lot of the time a song starts with an acoustic guitar when jamming and it was really cool to show people we could be under the microscope and jam and still bring the same energy to the acoustic set that we bring to the live set. That was something that we captured then and something we capture now whenever we break out the acoustic. We did another acoustic album years later, but it's something that we feel is important. Especially for me, because doing this allows me to showcase more of my vocal ability and to sing more and not necessarily sing over the guitars and the loudness. It brings it down. We're still doing a heavy song but you can hear it (laughs)".That same year original guitarist and backing vocalist Clint Lowery left the band to play with his brother Corey in Dark New Day. Although the split was amicable and Lowery was to return four years later, Witherspoon admits that musically the adjustment was difficult."That was a weird period for us", he reflected, "because that's our brother and for me, I loved writing with Clint but for us, I think... we continued. It was something that made us work harder and we had our brother Sonny Mayo from Snot there for a while and it was a great opportunity for us all and for him too and it was a pleasure to play with him but like anything I think when you leave home sometimes you've gotta come back and I felt that was what happened. When Clint came back to the band for me it was the missing link that we needed back, even though we didn't stop. For me, this band is the original band. The guys that started it and are still here. There's a certain air about it when we're all together in a room writing music that is like no other".One of the strengths of Sevendust, particularly in the live arena, is the passion and emotion exuded by their enigmatic frontman. Witherspoon not only gives voice to the songs that have nurtured Sevendust, but he also feels them. It is not uncommon for him to be seen on the brink of tears during their performance, unashamed to let the essence of the music shine through in his actions."Oh man, it gets emotional just thinking about it when you ask me the question", he managed, obviously choking up at the thought. "It's my serenity. When I'm on stage it's a place where I go and feel from the soul. I feel the energy from the people and I get emotional because I can look out and there can be one person in the crowd that is looking at me and I can see the effect and what's going on and maybe it's even something going on in their lives. You can feel that pain or that energy. It goes both ways, any time. You never know what can spark emotions and it's a rollercoaster ride of happy, sad, exciting - it's every emotion that you can possibly feel and fit in your body on that stage for me and I love it every time I go on it".Sevendust return to Australia this April on the back of last years album All I See Is War, an album which many critics believe harks back in sound to the early days of the band."It's crazy", Witherspoon enthused, "because the first thing the producer said when he came in was listen, you guys don't need any help so let me know if I can do anything and it was just like he was policing things. He said I want you guys to just be Sevendust. Let's go back to the old sound. Let's not get crazy and that's what we were able to do with him. I guess with any artist you want to grow and expand but it wasn't hard for us just to be Sevendust and I think we were able to - not on all of the tracks - but on some of the songs we got that old feel back and it was really cool to do that". It is not uncommon for fans - especially those from the beginning - to demand each new album has some sort of throwback to earlier releases, but Witherspoon agrees that what gets lost in the cries is the fact that it is not quite so easy to replicate a period and feel that was captured in a time when innocence was the best virtue of their chosen artist."It's not easy at all", he shook his head. "You want to evolve and you want things to... especially as an artist you're your own worst critic and you definitely don't want to keep doing things the same. I've always felt that Sevendust is Sevendust and we've never really gotten away from that Sevendust sound. On this album we were able to get back to a more... familiar side of it".Kris Peters
I'm joined via Skype by one of my music heroes, Sonny Mayo. He's played guitar in a few of my favorite bands and it was so great to get to know him a bit over the phone. I'm so happy he's still here kicking ass and doing such great work for others. This episode features the songs “The Box” and “I Jus’ Lie” by Snot. SONNY MAYO, former guitarist for bands like Ugly Kid Joe and Snot, talks to me about getting STEM CELL THERAPY in Panama for a genetic heart condition. After two heart attacks and unpleasant side-effects from heart medications, Sonny was introduced to stem cell therapy through listening to a Joe Rogan podcast. Raising money through GoFundMe, he was able too make the trip and receive treatment which is not yet legal in the United States. Sonny is a stellar example of taking back his health treatment from an often limited and close-minded medical system. This is an important message as heart disease is the #1 killer in our country!

It's rare to have the opportunity to have a candid conversation with someone so open and kind as verified metalhead Sonny Mayo. Between his life on the road, recovery, spirituality, and choosing compassion it's hard not to be awestruck and inspired. As a phenomenal guitarist you undoubtedly have heard him play with Snot, Sevendust, or his current band Ugly Kid Joe. After his bout with drugs and alcohol he joined up with fellow musicians to form Rock to Recovery that uses music to aid in the healing for others turning to a life of sobriety. In addition to his music and outreach Sonny spends as much time as he can with other loves, his doGs. I know what you're saying, "You've got a typo there guys!" Nope, Sonny goes into detail about how his doG saved his life, aided in his turn to a plant-based diet, and how he sees doG is goD.
