Through those endeavors how often do we walk away or lose sight? Moreover, do we have anyone to support us and do we support those around us? I recently saw a video going viral showing a child doing a box jump with the support of her coach/parent. The intensity and tenacity of the kid, the support they received, and the elated celebration of achievement really hit home. Stress can do a surprising amount of damage to you physical and mental health. We tend to forget the amount of damage it can do to our friends and family. It's not possible to avoid stress completely but being able to recognize the signs and deal with stressors correctly can be a massive benefit to ourselves and those around us   Symptoms headaches insomnia anxiety over eating / not eating social withdrawal chest pain fatigue feeling like you’re losing control How Stress Effects Us Physical increased risk of heart attack / high blood pressure Stress increases blood flow to muscles, constricts blood vessels, and increases heart rate. Constant stress to the heart in this manner can lead to heart attacks and stroke. Even in relatively healthy people. weakened immune system Stress hormones jump starts the immune system, good if you’re hurt but constant stimulation weakens your system leaving you open to illness missed periods / heavy or irregular cycle Can also magnify symptoms of menopause drug / alcohol abuse obesity mental increased chances of depression anger / irritation How Our Stress Affects Others Someone once told me, we take things out on those we love because we trust them. Unfortunately, that places your chronic stress on them putting them into the same cycle you’ve found yourself. It’s important to be self aware and listen to those around you. If they lash out back at you, it’s likely they are feeding off your stress. They may also ask why you’re acting or talking a certain way, this is a great trigger that you may need to dial it back and evaluate. There’s nothing wrong with saying you need a moment to think or calm down. We all have a mechanism in our brains that copycats those in our social circles. These are called “mirror neurons” and are used to help social circles empathize, bond, and learn. We see these in action when we yawn after another person or we mirror our work collages posture. This also goes for emotions. Steps to reduce Stress Start writing in a journal A journal can help you recognize stressors as well as help you naturally work out solutions Try to locate your triggers If you can, figure out what your common stressors are that you can control. If it’s you commute, maybe discuss flex time with your boss to avoid traffic or maybe telecommute a once or twice a week. If it your kids when you get home, work with a family member or spouse to watch your kids for a moment to decompress. You may not be able to address every stressor but you’ll be surprised what targeting only a few can do for your physical and mental health. The 4 A’s Avoid stress if you can by saying “no”, keep away from those who stress you out that you don’t have to interact with, take control over your environment such as the the TV or shopping in a less crowded store, reduce your todo list to the necessities. Alter your situation Express yourself to those that add to your stress by limiting conversation or letting them know they are adding to your stress. Most people will sympathize and be willing to help, compromise where possible, be mindful of your workload. Adapt Try to put a silver lining on problems such as bad traffic is a chance to listen to a new audiobook or podcast, look at the big picture / the long term odds are the problem won’t have as long of an effect as you think Accept things you can’t change Don’t try to control the uncontrollable sometimes it’s easier to prepare than fight the inevitable, learn to forgive those that caused stress or make mistakes holding on to something that’s causing stress to you but no the other person is just poisoning yourself. Talk to loved ones, vent. Find a person at work, at home, friend, or family that’s happy to just listen to you talk. They may be able to help with solutions. If you just want to vent without getting feedback, let them know. MOVE THAT BODY hit a heavy bag / excersize dance like an idiot go for a walk hike Do something out of the ordinary take a painting class lay in the grass and find pictures in clouds read drink some coffee or tea and do nothing Manage your time better by not over committing to things, making a list of priorities, white board your items at work or display them so other know you have a lot going on, break things into steps Meditation Take a break / breather ----- Check out the store: https://goo.gl/Ytti1Y Support the show: https://goo.gl/O5w2R0 Grab a book with Audible: https://goo.gl/SzEZJO Start shopping at Thrive Market: https://goo.gl/D1YEyH

As I grazed on some buffalo cauliflower, red pepper hummus, and the guacamole I brought I glanced that the television from time to time. My parents always have the "rockin' new year's eve" on so the night was full mostly of pop singers. Near midnight I caught a glimpse of Mariah Carey performing. I noticed she was lip syncing but that's not what caught me off guard. It was obvious she was having technical issue. Even more obvious, she wasn't taking the malfunctions very well. She was visually shaken, frustrated, and action out toward the staff. The next day the internet was abuzz about this performance I saw another video, this one of Adele. In this video, all the audio caught out on her mid song. For a split second she was taken off guard, as we all would be, but she quickly snapped back into her song (with some audience participation) and let the professionals running the show do their jobs. The sound quickly came back before the song was complete. Aside from the lack of audio, you would never know things were awry.  I found it interesting how to professionals in their field not only reacting to an unexpected moment but how the openly treated the staff there to assist with problem and ensure a smooth performance. While you're at it, support the show, grab a book with Audible, or start shopping at Thrive Market. We hope you've set some time aside for an unexpected therapy session as that's what this episode turned into. Jen Peer-Rich is a unique spirit that, in our opinion, could fill countless episodes. We certainly could learn something new from her and about ourselves with each show. It's safe to say this episode will give you the ability (and permission) to have some inner reflection. After this episode you'll have the tools to be comfortable in who you are and begin to rebuild. Through all of our laughs, and nearly blowing out Matt's ears, Jen made amazing points. She really forced us to think about how we view ourselves, how those views are part of who we are, and how our thoughts are not really us. We covered quite a bit on the show, to say the least. So much that you'll need to listen more than once to really take each part to heart. Personally, I recommend finding a comfortable couch, laying down and using her words as a guide for inner reflection and finding your strength. ABOUT JEN PEER-RICH Jen Peer-Rich is the founder of Friends in Presence. She is an alchemist, artist, speaker, and author, focusing on themes of conscious living, ecological sanity, and cultural evolution. Her message attracts brave humans, who dare to investigate themselves in an honest psychological inquiry that challenges the lie of separation from nature. Jen established Friends in Presence as a celebration of individual and collective healing. We had some great feedback about his episode so we know new and season listeners will enjoy. See you next week guys! Robert grew up on a farm in Corvallis, OR where he adopted a vegan lifestyle in 1995 at age 15. Today he is the best-selling author of the book, Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness: The Complete Guide to Building Your Body on a Plant-Based Diet, and his latest book, Shred It!. While you're at it, support the show, grab a book with Audible, or start shopping at Thrive Market. Recently we had the opportunity to work with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue at Asheville Veganfest. While there we managed to steal away some speakers for a quick two on one chat. One of the speakers, Renee King-Sonnen, stole the show with her amazing story and amazing energy. After spending sometime talking with her during and after recording we couldn't pass up a chance to have her on the show for a long form interview. Renee's story is not like any other. After marrying her now husband and cattle rancher, Renee settled in to be a typical rancher's wife. Though she always had animal rights and welfare buzzing around in her mind she suppressed the urge to succumb, something many of us have felt and done. In an attempt to follow tradition she purchased a calf with intention to raise to market weight and to be sold for food. While going through the process something began to wake within her and she wasn't able to keep what she knew to be true and decided she'd had enough. Renee was able to recognize what she and the other ranchers were doing wasn't right and decided to make a change. The calf that she raised leant her name to her new home, "Rowdy Girl Sanctuary". We talked with Renee King-Sonnen about her waking up, working with other ranchers and rancher wives to further the cause, and a very moving story about a strong calf that thought her, and I'm sure you, a lot about the future of animal welfare and the future of sanctuaries. If you can, please take some time and support the efforts of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. You can also become a member or adopt an animal and get some great perks while supporting the sanctuary and help some amazing animals. ABOUT RENEE KING-SONNEN Renee, a native Houstonian, is the Executive Director and Founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary in Angleton, Texas. She remarried her husband Tommy Sonnen, a multi-generational cattle rancher in 2009 and moved to the ranch. She fell in love with farm animals, having no idea her life was about to transform. After witnessing time and again the baby calves going to the sale barn she became extremely depressed. In October 2014, she went vegan as a result and began researching factory farming and the compassionate alternative, farm sanctuaries. She desperately consulted with leaders in the vegan movement, determined to do whatever she could to create sanctuary out of what was once a beef cattle operation in the heart of cattle country. VEGAN: EVERYDAY STORIES The documentary Vegan: Everyday Stories features Renee King-Sonnen along with other prominent figures in the plant based movement. The movie focuses on a set of very different vegans, their journey, and their everyday lives. A great movie free of graphic imagery to inspire others that they too can make an amazing life change and be happier and healthier than ever before. In true Curiously Veg fashion we managed to detour into discussions about infighting with the plant-based community and Scott’s love to pull some great pranks on his lifting buddies. Few exemplify that more than Dustin Harder, The Vegan Roadie YouTube sensation. Dustin jumped on a call with us a couple months ago to talk about his travels, starting out on the road as The Vegan Roadie and allowed us to get personal with his past and his journey. Now that the feel good stuff is under our belts he dropped by again to talk about the good stuff: season 2 and tasty food. You can watch The Vegan Roadie in pieces or wait till the end of the month and watch the whole episode. We managed to get Dustin to admit to some of his favorite restaurants around the country, some dishes that really surprised him, and a few touching stories about people he's met. I think me managed to make us laugh and cry throughout this episode. Which makes us even more excited for season 2. We dug into some tips to get local places to either add to their menu or start placing vegan options. Many of the places Dustin visits have starting putting options on their menus through the work of the local community applying some of our suggested techniques and showing we're here and we're a powerful market. Hope, Dave, and Matt had an amazing weekend at the Asheville VeganFest presented by Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Though we were only able to spend one of the two days at the event we saw some amazing speakers, heard some inspiring stories, and our very own vegan renegade was called into action to speak on the vegan athlete panel. We had some minor technical difficulties but streamed the event over Facebook, it was a great success with a lot viewers. If you somehow missed our streaming you can view them on our Facebook video page. A few of the speakers were able to make to the pre-party as well and we snagged them for a quick chat. Renee King-Sonnen: Rowdy Girl Sanctuary Matt Frazier: No Meat Athlete Jen Peer Patrik Baboumian: Strongman and world record holder We were also honored to have a few of these speakers sit down with us for a quick "one on two" after their talks. RENEE KING-SONNEN Renne from Rowdy Girl Sanctuary has an amazing story. She married into the Texas rancher way of life and in an attempt to find solidarity with her rancher husband she raised a calf. While doing so she became aware of it's sentience and began educating herself. Though she struggled to find balance with her internal battles and her marriage she hit a breaking point. Instead of he choice for compassion breaking down her relationship she turned her husband around and converted their cattle ranch into an animal sanctuary. MATT FRAZIER Matt Frazier is well known as the No Meat Athlete and has a popular podcast (just like us). Matt's transition was slow as he worked his way into a plant-based life. Our short chat with Matt ended up focusing on making small changes and working toward gradual improvement. He also shared how he raises his young children on a vegan diet but at the same time, not sweating the small stuff. PATRIK BABOUMIAN Patrik Baboumian is just as powerful as his name sounds. Considered the strongest man in German, one of the strongest in the world, and holding multiple world records you would assume he would be a meat eating powerhouse. Instead he's a plant eating vegan badass. After Dave fangirled we were still able to get a glimpse into Patriks view on diet, training, how his journey from a meat eater, vegetarian (eating 6lbs of cottage cheese), and finally a vegan was the best decision he's ever made. ASHEVILLE VEGANFEST WRAP UP We can't state how much we enjoyed our time at VeganFest and we look forward to working with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue more next year. If you're anything like us you spend quite a bit of time on YouTube looking for great channels that you can connect with and provides information that is both useful and entertaining (hey! Just like us!). There are plenty of channels dedicated to a vegan lifestyle but few compare to the dedication of Emily Barwick, also known as Bite Size Vegan. What really attracts us to Emily's work is her wide range of video topics and styles. Her ability to produce a video that can appeal to those who need a "wake up call" and/or cold hard facts sets her apart from the other YouTubers. However, she can usually find a way to let her genuine heart and personality shine which really makes her subscribers loyal viewers. Personally, we've seen and used her videos to answer questions in social media posts and groups because she addresses topics so clear. Along with her traditional, and sometimes silly, videos she also provides a rare service: videos for kids. We know quite a few parent's raising vegan children or working to guide their families toward a more plant based lifestyle. Many of the parents I've talked to tend to have the hardest time explaining these changes to their children. Emily is able to speak honestly to children without over stimulating or talking down to them. She believes children are smart and should be treated as such. ABOUT BITE SIZE VEGAN Emily Moran Barwick is an animal liberation activist, artist, educator and the creator of Bite Size Vegan, an ever-expanding free educational resource consisting of a YouTube channel and accompanying website. Her videos range from the very serious and highly researched, to down to earth talks, to using humor to present a very real topic. She’s one of the very few vegan YouTubers who strives to not only educate the plant based community on how to address other but attempts to help the non-plant based to understand the plant based viewpoint. Regardless of the topic Emily presents the information that is passionate, sincere, and with plenty of her own personality. CHECK OUT OUR STORE Interested in getting some awesome CV swag? We had the immense pleasure of speaking with Gene Baur, President and CEO of Farm Sanctuary. Gene took nearly an hour out of his busy schedule to talk with us over Skype (yes we have video!) about the 30th anniversary of Farm Sanctuary, his new book Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day, his journey going vegan, and so much more. We know you’ll get as much out of hearing from Gene as we did. Stay tuned to the end of the show as we dig into what Gene said and how it affect us. WHO IS GENE BAUR? Gene Baur is co‑founder and president of Farm Sanctuary, America’s leading farm animal protection organization. Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by TIME magazine.  For 25 years he has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our cheap food system.  Gene’s latest book, published by Rodale, Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day, is available for sale April 2015. His previous bestseller, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, was published by Touchstone in March 2008. “If you can live well and be happy without causing unnecessary harm, why wouldn't you?” ― Gene Baur, Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day INTERVIEW WITH GENE BAUR Gene Baur co-founded the Farm Sanctuary 30 years ago in 1986 and now has three locations in New York and California.  He started out investigating and exposing the mistreatment of farm animals. During his investigations Gene would come upon live animals in trash cans and piles of bodies. It was then that he and his team started rescuing farm animals. Not only did these rescues help the animals but helped Gene heal from witnessing the cruelty during his activism. Farm Sanctuary is and continues to be a place of hope, and healing, and transformation. Part of what Gene works on is talking with people to get them to live within an alignment with their own values. As the thought of harming another animal is abhorrent, making them aware of that value is beneficial in his message. Gene makes a great point that, “most people are humane but most people are unwittingly supporting this horrendous system.” This is a point that we make quite often that if a person had to perform the act taken in slaughterhouses there would be a lot less meat eaters. Since the typical diet is something we are introduced to we assume that the action is the norm and acceptable but as the message spreads we’ll see a wider turn towards a more compassionate diet and lifestyle. Recently we’ve had companies purchasing vegan companies to gain in the vegan market as well as companies such as Ben & Jerry’s releasing vegan products. The question we always get is how do we feel about buying those items. Gene views this as generally a good thing as it brings vegan options to a wider audience but understands we should use caution as it bring the non-vegan influence to the vegan brand. When asked about advice for those new to being vegan or plant-based, Gene offers a great piece of wisdom, “stay the course.” We all know how tough it can be at first especially going out, but keeping true to your lifestyle and remembering why you’ve chosen compassion is a great help. Also, if you make mistakes or stray don’t let that deter you. No one is perfect, recognize that and do better next time. “Becoming a vegan is not about self-denial; it’s more a matter of self-awareness. It is about trying new foods and broadening your palate, expressing the joy of being alive, and knowing that you’re making a daily effort to live less violently and more sustainably.” ― Gene Baur, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food We asked Gene what he would say in a letter to himself to when he started. His advice hit home for us and is something that can only be heard from Gene. That being said, pay attention during the interview and take heed to his words about what he would say to himself then, and now. His book Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day, brings a fantastic perspective from the animal’s point of view showing how we are all connected in many ways. Of everything Farm Sanctuary does, Gene loves seeing the transformations of people and the animals who come to them only knowing cruelty and pain from humans eventually learning to trust them again and enjoy life. Seeing people healing and doing better after recognizing the impact they have has also been extremely rewarding. One amazing example is the story of the “fur farmer” across from Farm Sanctuary and how Gene managed to change the farmer’s heart and mind. When speaking with neighbors and others he finds breaking through the idea that we need animal foods for nutrients one of the hardest to speak to. This is likely because food is not only personal but something we’ve been taught for all of our lives. However, demonstrating the idea is a myth is a great way to get through the barrier. It’s always best to find common ground and build from there. We spoke further with Gene about stories and interactions that benefit people and animals while finding a compassionate lifestyle. Gene also points out and digs into how animal based diets aren’t sustainable for the long term. Something that Bill Nye and Richard Dawkins have both expressed. NASA is even making steps to have astronauts on Mars to live on a plant-based diet. Though we see companies making changes and producing more options we agree with Gene that the growth of compassion will start with small groups such as Curiously Veg and our listeners. It’s important to remember that you are an ambassador for the animals and the planet. Of course there is so much more that Gene touched on throughout our talk, more than we could possible write about. We invite you to listen to the show on our site or on your podcast app of choice. We took some time off from the interviews this episode to banter about a few things that got under our skin the past couple of weeks. We discussed an article that lists cheese, eggs, and dairy yogurt as healthy fats, “lab grown”/cultured meat, people spreading bad science online, and more. Things get a bit silly from the start, you’ve been warned. CONTEST WINNER There were quite a few entries into the contest for the signed copy of Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis. We’d like to thank everyone who threw their hat into the ring but there can only be one winner: Brian Burkhart! We’ll be in touch soon to get your info! Don’t worry if you didn’t win, this won’t be the last contest from us. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."- Mark Twain WATCH OUT FOR LIES The “what grinds our gears” episode started out look at the study posted by a fellow Facebook user. The study, Mortality in vegetarians and comparable nonvegetarians in the United Kingdom, was the focus of a post that started as “Got meat? Or do you avoid it because you think being a vegetarian will increase your life span? A large study found no difference in all cause mortality between them. Rut ro!...” We found this alarming as the study didn’t really say what this person was claiming, the region and sample size was low regarding the claim, and even the conclusion was ignored by the poster. Given that the person hails themselves as a health professional, many would follow his lead without taking time to understand the lack in value of the study and/or his interpretation of the abstract. Once you managed to separate our face from our palms the next article, 10 High-Fat Foods That Are Actually Super Healthy, wasn’t quite as bad since it atleast had some nuggets of truth. What struck us was claiming cheese, eggs, fish, and dairy as “super healthy”. Given what we know about the links in heart disease, cancer, etc. these food are far from “super healthy”. We covered a few alternatives to the healthy claims the article made. However, we point out it’s important to be aware of who writes an article as well as how it’s written. For example, “Cheese, like other high-fat dairy products, also contains powerful fatty acids that have been linked to all sorts of benefits, including reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.” is read as one statement that is really a collection of partial truths. However, if you remove the first part you end up with the full truth, “powerful fatty acids that have been linked to all sorts of benefits, including reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.” Now, we know none of you eat fast food… right? Ok, good. As we dove into a level of absurdity, you may have heard about Chick-fil-a stating, in regards to a healthy diet:   “...Eat smaller meals (like our 8-count pack of grilled nuggets) every three to four hours” Not to mention this would cost a person $700 a month, it would also give you (per serving): 3g of fat (1g saturated) 70mg of cholesterol 0g of fiber 23g of protein (listen to our interview with Dr. Davis to hear about protein) 530mg of sodium They claim health benefits because of the low calories. However, as we’ve said before, on a whole foods plant based diet calories aren’t an issue. Sounds like a better and healthier plan that 8 chicken nuggets every 3 to 4 hours. Digging out of a grease filled bag we talked about a recent hot topic, being cultured or “lab grown” meat. If a few of the social media groups this has come up as either a “would you” or “is this vegan”. Given that the product is still meat we know the negative baggage that comes along with animal products. One argument is this would be less damaging to the environment since it wouldn’t require livestock. This topic did spark some debate between Hope and David about if the effort is well spent. Hope feels like is a valuable stepping stone to reduce/end a large portion of animal cruelty and possible turning more to a plant based diet. However, David feels the time and money spent could go toward a vegetable replacement and ending the cruelty altogether. We’d like to know your thoughts on this one. You can contact us or post to our Facebook or Twitter. We covered a lot in this episode. Give it a listen, subscribe, and feel free to contact us with your questions or comments. Your hosts at Curiously Veg Radio got a chance to talk with Dr. Garth Davis about his ground-breaking new book, Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession With Meat Is Killing Us And What We Can Do About It. We spoke about the role nutrition plays in a healthy lifestyle, evaluating research, and his own experience with changing his perspective on health and weight loss. Why in the heck do we focus so much on protein? Won’t I get a protein deficiency if I don’t eat meat? What about gains tho?  Shouldn’t we buy foods that contains lots of protein? It’s carbs that make us fat, right? Butter is healthy because Time Magazine said so, and aren’t they experts? We have all asked these questions when deciding how to eat to be healthy and build muscle. It’s confusing and there seems to be a new study or article out everyday that tells us what is the best way to eat, so how in the world can someone tell what is correct and what is profit-driven sensationalism? You can start with Dr. Davis, because he will open your eyes to what’s really going on and gives key advice on what is a healthy lifestyle. In his book, Dr. Davis takes you on his personal journey of the physician becoming the patient - physician heal thyself if you will. He compiles all he learned, research, and findings in a guide that illustrates why we are sick and becoming fatter every year.  It is an easy to understand synopsis of what is really going on with our health and how we can take control back. The bonus material offered on Proteinaholic.com is a valuable resource for starting a healthy lifestyle. Both your hosts wishes that the guides and recipes had been around when they started their plant-based journey! Dr. Davis said it best with “For doctors to fail to inform patients of the gentlest, safest, most beneficial action they can take to protect their own health is nothing more than criminal negligence.” So, hunker down and get ready for an awesome interview! If you go to audibletrial.com/CuriouslyVegRadio you can sign up for a 30 day free trial. We got a little, well, a lot geek for episode four. The idea of doing episode four brought up thoughts of Star Wars which lead us to other fandoms such as Doctor Who, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, and more. We wanted to go through some of our favorite areas of pop culture geekdom and examine the philosophies and diets of different races and characters. We managed to jump around some (and got a bit deep in fandom) but we managed hit some interesting points along the way. Warning, things get weird... STAR WARS The topic that started this discussion is, "would a Jedi be vegan?" We fill that they would however, there are some holes we worked on filling. Our first set of evidence was the Jedi creed: Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy. Jedi use their powers to defend and to protect. Jedi respect all life, in any form. Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy. Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training. We felt that the last three were great points about protecting all life. However, the area Dave got stuck on was since Jedi's view death as a part of life, does that mean they would consume something that died naturally and without suffering? Hope pondered if Ahsoka Tano would switch to a meat substitute even though her species was carnivores. Hope also questioned if the Jedi reaches a certain level, do they need to eat. However, David said that since the Sith are the "Jedi" of the dark side and Vader needs vitapaste for food then the Jedi must eat. However, we think the Sith would be meat eaters given they get their power from taking it from others. You can see some of this in the Sith creed. Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. Dave proposed the question that if the Jedi were vegan and came across someone who wasn't would they intervene and "guide them"? Hope thought the Jedi would remain hands off and provided the logic behind it. Hope realized... now... after recording... that she called the Solo kids, Jaina Solo and Jacen Solo, the names of the Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna. She has been scolded and frozen in carbonite for her betrayal. STAR TREK Hope mentioned that Liam Hemsworth went vegan, which turned our talk to Star Trek.  There is an episode where Spock has to eat meat to survive and is disgusted with himself. To which David remarked that the concept of meat consumption and our biological makeup leads to an animal based diet to being "illogical". Also, we speculated that beings traveling the universe would have moved passed animals in their diet. However, what about a replicated turkey breast? We have this now with people working on "lab grown" meat that didn't require "mistreatment". Dave and Hope addressed this and talked about if we would consume a "lab grown" burger would we? (you'll need to listen to find out). SCIENCE Dave brought up the clips of Bill Nye and Richard Dawkins(1 | 2) and how they viewed a plant-based diet. This tends to frustrate us since they support it but don't make nor push the change. In addition to Bill and Richard Dave proposed that even the act of catch and release fishing is harmful as fish can still feel pain even though people still want to debate it: fish can feel pain: according to “pain in fish” wiki It has been concluded that bony fish possess nociceptors that are similar in function to those in mammals. The central nervous system (CNS) of fish contains a spinal cord, medulla oblongata, and the brain, divided into telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon and cerebellum. In regards on how a plant-based diet affect the mind Hope pointed out a prison experiment that tested diet and how it affects repeat offenders. Our research found, "At the time Mooreland took over the facility, California had a recidivism rate of 95%. During the seven years Mooreland had the inmates at Victor Valley on a vegetarian diet the recidivism rate at the prison went down to under 2%." (source) FUTURAMA We talked about the poppler episode of Futurama where the crew found a tasty food on a planet and started selling it. Once they realized the "food" was alive and sentient they changed their tune and tried to save them. DOCTOR WHO Being big Doctor Who (2005) fans Hope and Dave gushed over their favorite doctors and discussed their possible dietary choices. In the episode "The Two Doctors" the doctor changed to a plant-based diet for his companion but that wasn't mentioned again. We talked about how the Doctor is able to talk to horses, babies, the space whale, and remembers "Jim the Fish" with River. Because of this we suspect he may be vegetarian/vegan. However, Hope points out that the Doctor did eat fish fingers and custard but Dave contests that he was mid regeneration and was out of sorts. GAME OF THRONES There was a brief mention that Peter Dinklage follows a plant-based diet and is an avid spokesman for animal rights. Any food he eats on Game of Thrones is made from tofu or seitan. COMICS Hope mentioned that Beast Boy went vegetarian/vegan because he was able to turn into those animals and knew that they were able to feel pain and other emotions. According to the Teen Titans Wiki: "Having transformed into most of the meat-producing animals, Beast Boy has lost his taste for meat and is now a vegetarian, which often gets him arguing with the others (especially Cyborg) because he constantly attempts to have the others adopt his culinary taste as well." Mark Waid, in "Birthright", made Superman vegetarian when he gain the power to see the pain of animals. However, this was quickly reversed by DC. Hope, thought that Wonder Woman would be plant-based since she sees all life a sacred. Dave, in attempt to get slammed with hate mail, pointed out that he thinks comics tend to cling to the meat eating idea since it's seen as manly and comics tend to market heavily to the male demographic. GENERAL A few off topic items came up where We discussed how we aren't part of the food chain but rather removed from it. In addition, humans have caused animal extinction faster than they would have naturally. We took some time while talking about Neil Gaiman about his comments on honey and our views on the subject. FOLLOW UP What do you guys think? Would the Jedi or the Doctor be vegan? Know any plant-based superheros we didn't mention? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.
