A Missouri judge ruled Thursday that an elderly white man must stand trial for shooting and seriously injuring unarmed Black teenager Ralph Yarl in April when the high school honor student mistakenly rang his doorbell in Kansas City, the Associated Press reports. Andrew Lester, 84, pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action on April 20. The ruling came after a preliminary hearing to determine whether to move forward with a criminal trial. Lester is now slated to appear in court on Sept. 20 for an arraignment. Yarl, now 17, was among the witnesses who testified in the Clay County courtroom. At least six other witnesses, three neighbors and three police officers, also testified, and a recording of Lester's 911 call was played, local station KCTV reported. A history of anti-Black fear has left everyone unsafe in a nation full of anxious gun owners. There are more guns than there are people in the U.S., and a lot of people seem to be afraid. According to historian and Emory University African American studies professor Carol Anderson, our nation's history with guns is directly related to its legacy of anti-Black racism. She explains this history in her 2021 book, “The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America.” Anderson joins host Kai Wright to discuss the state of gun violence today and the role that race and fear have played. They hear from both pro and anti-gun listeners about fear and choice as they respond to gun violence in this country. Then, producer Rahima Nasa returns to reflect on her Ramadan celebration. She joins Kai to open our listener mailbag and hear voicemails responding to our recent episodes. After two separate shootings of young people, a Black man in Missouri and a white woman in New York, we explore 'stand your ground' laws, media fearmongering and race. On Today's Show:Imani Perry, professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and the author of books including South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation (Ecco, 2022) and Breathe: A Letter to My Sons (Beacon, 2019), reflects on the shootings of Ralph Yarl and Kaylin Gillis. Original Air Date: April 19, 2023 It's an act that's familiar to countless older siblings around the nation: pick up your younger siblings from afterschool, the bus stop, maybe even another friend's house and then walk them home. It's an act that took a decidedly dangerous and near deadly turn for the 16-year-old “gentle soul”, clarinet player and member of his high school marching band – Ralph Yarl. Hundreds marched and called for justice after Ralph Yarl was shot twice – once in the head – by a white homeowner last Thursday. Ralph's supposed wrongdoing? Accidentally ringing the wrong doorbell while trying to pick up his younger brothers and bring them home. Ralph Yarl has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. The white man who shot him, will now face two felonies: assault in the first degree and armed criminal action. Young Black boys – children – are often viewed as far older and threatening than reality would suggest. This can have far reaching consequences on their lives, and their mental health.
Topics include: 1)84-yr-old Andrew Lester is released on bail after arrest in the Ralph Yarl shooting. Carl is convinced, since race hustlers have chimed in on the case, Lester will not receive a fair trial.2)Sen. John Fetterman is not mentally fit to serve. 3)Speaker McCarthy releases proposal to avoid debt ceiling. 4)A young couple that was beat up during the Chicago teen riots last weekend, speaks out. 5)Commies gone wild: Biden looks to punish those with good credit scores by making them fund high risk mortgages. The Ralph Yarl case is awful and complicated all at once. Nobody won here and there is no great outcome for either of the two people involved. But piling on a frail, seemingly confused 84 year old man exposes the worst of us. The new details around Andrew Lester's plea are just despicable. I've got two audio clips to play for you from national figures that have been in the news a lot over the last year. You won't believe how these two people sound. How do you get and keep large crowds for the NFL Draft to stay all night for the end? You hire Fallout Boy, Motley Crue and Thundercat to play each night after the drafting ends. Who knew? We can scratch moving to Vegas off the list of possible Royals threats if they don't get a new $2 billion stadium because the A's are moving onto 49 of the most expensive acres in America right by the strip. But somehow, the Royals want to spend 33% more money than the A's to build here. What? And the soccer teams in KC appear to be as bad as the Royals. The women's team just fired their coach after an 0-3 start for some mysterious reason. This same coach had them in the title game last year.

[00:30] Government-Created Crises (14 minutes) In an article for American Greatness this week, Victor Davis Hanson correctly identified that “the government is the cause of our many crises.” While America's problems spiral out of control, our city, state and national leaders ignore crises or blame them on their political enemies. [14:30] Media Incite Racial Conflict (7 minutes) The Biden administration and media are inciting racial conflict through their coverage of Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old black youth who was shot by an 84-year-old white man. The mayor of Kansas City said on CNN that Yarl was shot “because he was existing while black.” [21:00] Raffensperger Gloats Over Fox News Settlement (11 minutes) On MSNBC yesterday, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger celebrated the Fox News settlement payment to Dominion Voting Systems as “vindication” for him and the end of the supposed “conspiracy theory” about the stolen presidential election in 2020. [32:00] Biden Crime Family Corruption (12 minutes) An IRS whistleblower claims the investigation into Hunter Biden's tax returns is not being handled fairly. The IRS agent wants whistleblower protection before he goes public with evidence of the preferential treatment that is compromising the criminal probe. [44:20] Confidence in Christ (11 minutes) The book of Jonah teaches us that we must not run away from what we know we should do. Jesus Christ living in us provides the confidence we need to stand firm for God's truth and go forward with Christ.
Ralph is home and is healing. Today I have some important updates on how he's doing and what's next - including a very interesting call from President Joe Biden. Let me unpack and explain it. As is common in high-profile, politically- and racially-charged shootings, I'm seeing an enormous amount of bad legal takes on whether the shooting of Ralph Yarl by Andrew Lester could possibly have been lawful. In fact, Missouri law explicitly allows for the use of deadly defensive force under the circumstances in which Lester encountered Yarl, and we'll explore that in today's show. One caveat--Yarl claims that the second time he was shot was while he was on the ground. I've seen no evidence to corroborate that claim, but there may well be forensic evidence decisive on that issue. If Yarl's claim is supported by the evidence, that second shot might be difficult to justify. Any shots fired while Yarl was upright and apparently attempting to unlawfully enter Lester's dwelling, however, were almost certainly lawful under Missouri law. Interested in learning why? There is no question 16 year old Ralph Yarl did not have any bad intentions when he mistakenly went to the wrong door last week but the case is much more complicated than what's being presented. It's more than plausible that an 84 year old man that was asleep that night was truly scared and in fact called the police himself. We simply have to get to a point where we stop jumping to racist conclusions and allow "innocent until proven guilty" to be our guiding light once again. Andrew Lester may be a lot of things both good and bad... we just don't know yet. The Missouri House has passed a slam dunk bill that prevents trans persons from competing in girls and women's sports, 104-46. It's got a chance to become law and wrecks my plan for the KC Current to win an easy championship. Dang the luck. It's hard for the Royals to hit a new low but they did it Tuesday night. The NFL Draft is coming to KC and if you can believe it, our town will have more security for this than Nancy Pelosi wanted for January 6. Fact.
