Wes Geer, guitarist for Korn, would have advised his younger self to follow and trust his heart, remember that he is loved, and everything will be OK in time. He explains that trauma does not have to originate from a drastic situation. Trauma can happen to everyone and from any situation. The traumas people do not want to address are the traumas that need healing the most. Wes says that our experiences do not define if we are good or bad, and we should meet people where we in the recovery process. “Your success will be determined by the number of uncomfortable conversations you are willing to have.” Wes describes how helping others is a form of self-healing. He encourages others to become a seeker and that God is a unique experience for everyone.
The clouds parted for Wes as he gave up his addiction. He got excited about recovery and contemplated what he would do differently at Alcoholics Anonymous. Although Wes wanted to quit several times, now he put complete faith into the process. He began meditating and had premonitions of getting back into a band. Soon, he received an invitation from Korn to go on tour. Wes jammed with the band for an hour before playing his first concert in front of 12,000 people. It went great, and they toured for years. When Korn rekindled their relationship with their original guitarist, Wes created Rock to Recovery and integrated his program into the curriculum of numerous recovery centers.
Growing up Wes Geer moved schools a lot and always felt that he had to be “extra” to fit in. Self-medicating with marijuana was a way to avoid his real feelings. “I limped out of high school,” Wes recalled. He focused on playing music with his band and had the passion to keep trying. “It's not about the talent, it's about the hustle,” Wes believes. He and his band were doing massive amounts of drugs, playing gigs and rehearsing nonstop. Record labels were flying in to see them. “I was a tweaker about to sign a record deal,” Wes remembers. The lie he believed was, “How can I have a problem if I have a record deal?” The drug use escalated to meth and heroine. He couldn't keep a job and couldn't sleep, ever. He was mid-30's and lost. His brother intervened and Wes ended up in a 30-day rehab. He ended up staying for 60 days, “I was into it,” he shared. It was during that 60-day recovery that Wes discovered AA and learned how to ask for help.
Korn guitar hero Wes Geer founded “Rock to Recovery” as a way to harness the healing power of music. He also created a unique type of musical expression for treatment centers. As the youngest of seven children, he experienced his parents' divorce at five and sexual abuse. Wes admits that his parents' divorce “screwed me up on several layers.” He bounced between his mom and dad and discovered a love of music, drugs and alcohol. Getting kicked out of several high schools didn't deter him. “I knew I had it in me. I was not going to relent,” Wes shared. Escalating drug use, coupled with rock ‘n roll became the fuel that kept Wes going, but it would also lead to an overdose and a spiral into rehab. “Your success in life will be determined by your willingness to have uncomfortable conversations.” Wes added, “Music is the ultimate drug.”
Only after overcoming mental health issues and a near-fatal addiction was Wes able to recreate himself, and land the gig playing guitar with the legendary rock band, Korn. His transformation spawned a passion for helping others to not only overcome their greatest challenges, but to help transform their lives. Wes has dedicated himself to carrying the messages of his many teachers and how to tap into the highest versions of ourselves, and what he calls the The Vortex of Radness™. From getting the Korn gig, to forming Rock To Recovery®, a nonprofit that uses the healing power of music to uplift those in recovery, meditation has been part of everything amazing in Wesley Geer's life. Wes Geer's substance use as a teen ended up getting him kicked out of both high school and his home; by 18, he was living in his car and working at Domino's. Eventually, he was able to get a better job and continue playing in local bands, which led to the creation of Hed PE at the age of 21. For eight years, the band toured the world, but Geer's feelings of loneliness made him turn back to alcohol. He began to drink excessively and progressed to harder substances like meth: at the time, he accredited the high from the substance as the reason for his songwriting success. The severity of Geer's addiction intensified, and after nine years with the band, he quit. After leaving the band, he reached the point where he felt his life was imploding and he decided to seek help.Though he relapsed after three years of sobriety, Geer immediately went back to working his steps, and after 10 days of prayer and meditation, he received an offer to be the touring guitarist of the band Korn.It was after touring with the band that he formulated a way to give back and to do so through music, and in 2012, he founded Rock to Recovery – a music therapy program that helps people heal and transform their lives through the powerful experience of writing, playing and performing as a group. Now, more than 15 years sober and with Rock to Recovery in its 10th year, he is the host of the top-rated Rock to Recovery Radio show, and a highly sought-after speaker on the topics of personal growth, spirituality, addiction, mental health, harm reduction and music therapy.

Wes Geer is a professional guitar player, songwriter, recording artist, and producer, who signed his first record deal to Jive Records with the band he founded, (Hed) P.E.. Wes toured the world for nearly a decade, and the band sold over 1 million records worldwide. Their music was on high rotation on MTV, radio stations, as well as having numerous placements in popular feature films, TV, and video games. What many didn't know at the time was while he was leading his band to their first-ever record deal, Wes was a full-blown drug addict, using alcohol, methamphetamines and other drugs, daily, for years. No matter the efforts to quell his addiction and control it, things continually got worse. After nearly a decade of touring the world, with the biggest names in rock, Wes' life was imploding, and he finally left in 2003, for a ‘lifestyle change' that ultimately ended him up in rehab in 2004.In 2010, Wes decided he wanted to get back into music and started praying and meditating on what that would look like. Not long after, and only because he was sober, Geer was offered the gig as a guitarist with the rock band Korn. He traveled the world, performing in more than 40 countries with the multi-platinum stars, as well as appeared on numerous live televised and studio recording sessions. Geer was then moved to give back, wanting to create something that could help people who struggled the same way he had. He then founded Rock to Recovery (R2R), a non-profit organization created in late 2012 with the purpose of providing those in various types of treatment and recovery programs the cathartic, uplifting, healing experience of connectivity through music. Sonny Mayo started his professional music career in 1995 with the band Snot (Geffen Records) and, in 1998, went on to play in the band Amen (Virgin, Roadrunner Records). Having been in rehab as a teenager, Sonny continued to struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction while touring the world and writing/recording albums. On occasion he was issued ultimatums from his fellow band mates, which would bring brief periods of abstinence, but would inevitably lead to another relapse. Spiraling ever downward, Sonny hit bottom in late 2001.Desperate for sobriety, Sonny sought and received the help he needed in 12 Step fellowships. In January 2002, with less than 30 days sober, he went on his first clean/sober tour in Australia, where Sonny attended 12 Step meetings and began laying the foundation for a whole new experience as a professional musician, and has maintained sobriety ever since. In late 2002 he joined his friend, Wes Geer, as a touring guitarist in the band (hed)P.E. and, in 2005, joined the band Sevendust (TVT, Warner/Asylum Records).Sonny facilitates virtual Rock to Recovery® sessions, serving Air Force Wounded Warriors (AFW2), Semper Fi Fund, and other non profit organizations. He is also the lead recovery coach for R2R Companions, a Breathwork healer, and plays guitar with the Rock to Recovery® band, Sacred Sons.

Did you know music can be beneficial for finding healing and freedom from your addiction? Our guest this week helps people unlock their creativity and freely express how they feel emotionally through the gift of music. This week, we are talking with Sonny Mayo, Rock To Recovery Brand Ambassador, Board Member, Program Administrator, and Recovery Coach. Sonny is a music interventionist with Rock to Recovery, an active member of AA, and a Breathwork Healer. On occasion he was issued ultimatums from his fellow bandmates, which would bring brief periods of abstinence, but would inevitably lead to another relapse. In late 2002 he joined his friend, Wes Geer, as a touring guitarist in the band (hed)P.E. and, in 2005, joined the band Sevendust (TVT, Warner/Asylum Records). In 2009, Sonny attended the Recording Institute Of Technology at Musicians Institute in Hollywood and received a certification in audio engineering. He is a touring guitarist with the band Ugly Kid Joe, a guitar teacher, as well as a music producer, songwriter, and mixer. In this episode, Sonny shares how he often felt an intense longing and sadness in early childhood and how he self-medicated with drugs and alcohol to numb the pain at a young age. We discuss why the “fake it til’ you make it” mantra lacks clarity for those in recovery and what it means to find true freedom and healing. Topics Discussed The power of meditation, yoga, and breath work How music helps soothe the soul (and helps with addiction recovery) The many benefits of the original 12-Step Program How traumatic experiences impact the way we view the world Why inner-healing and self-love is an important step towards recovery Connect with Sonny Mayo Instagram (Personal) - https://www.instagram.com/sonny_mayo/ Instagram (Business) - https://www.instagram.com/rocktorecovery/ Additional Resources Rock to Recovery - https://rocktorecovery.org Rock to Recovery Companions - https://r2rcompanions.com Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Connect with Positive Recovery Centers online Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Contact Positive Recovery CentersIf you or someone you know needs help, visit the website or call the number below to schedule an assessment. Wesley Geer is a professional guitar player, songwriter, recording artist, and producer, who signed his first record deal to Jive Records with the band he founded, (Hed) P.E.. Wes toured the world for nearly a decade, and the band sold over 1 million records worldwide. He also lived a rock star's lifestyle with full blown addiction and self- destructive behavior. After a long pause from music Wes got sober and found his path to service in teaching music and eventually joining Korn in 2010. After touring the world several times over Geer was then moved to give back, wanting to create something that could help people who struggled the same way he had. He then founded Rock to Recovery (R2R), a non-profit organization created in late 2012 with the purpose of providing those in various types of treatment and recovery programs the cathartic, uplifting, healing experience of connectivity through music.
Wes Geer is a rock star - literally and figuratively. He founded the band HedPE and was traveling guitarist for KORN. In 2003, Wes was addicted to methamphetamines, alcohol and pot. He got clean. In 2012 he founded Rock to Recovery, a non-profit organization that allows recovering addicts, victims of abuse and troubled teens to express themselves through song. Rock to Recovery also works with Wounded Warriors helping our most valued citizens - our veterans.

On the show today I welcome Wesley Geer. Wes is best known as the founding member of Hed P.E and touring guitarist for the legendary band, Korn. He’s traveled to 42 countries and played in front of crowds of 80,000. However, it’s his current endeavor that really struck a “chord “with me. On 12/12/12, Wes created “Rock to Recovery” using Music as Medicine. After hitting rock bottom himself and getting sober, Wes had a vision to transform lives through the powerful, healing, consoling experience of music. R2R works with veterans, the youth and those working to overcome all forms of addictions, disorders and a variety of mental health issues. Plus, their program extends internationally through the Air Force “Wounded Warrior” program. R2R holds approximately 500 sessions a month writing and recording original songs on the spot to promote happy, healthy brain chemistry. Let’s see if we can get this episode to “go to 11.” This is…”FULLY ALIVE.”
Wes Geer shares his journey of touring with KORN, embracing sobriety and founding one of the most unique and successful rehabilitation programs, Rock To Recovery.

Wes Geer | Rock to Recovery Find Rock to Recovery here: https://www.facebook.com/rocktorecovery/ Former (hed) P.E. and Korn guitarist Wes Geer founded Rock to Recovery on 12-12-2012 in an effort to bring a new and unique type of music expression group into treatment centers -by forming a band! Together the band writes and performs a song, finally recording it at the end of each session. The program is designed so that ‘non-musicians’ can access the magic, healing, uplifting powers of writing and playing music. "Music is a language we are encoded with before we even exit the womb. Put on a song and a toddler will start singing, even dancing.” -Wes Rock to Recovery gives people the outlet to challenge themselves and channel the music that’s deep in their soul, many for the first time. Rock to Recovery is the vehicle to help bring it out of them. Connecting to this creative, Higher-Self force reminds participants that there is a hopeful, happy, playful, part of their Self still inside. For those struggling with PTSD, TBI, addiction, mental health, etc., it may have been years since having this part of Self activated. Those in the early days of recovery can enjoy the therapeutic release that only music can provide. The participants feel a part of, grow self esteem, walk through fears, inhibitions, escape their woes, to come out the other side with a totally new vibration. People in recovery can start becoming activated, re-connecting to people thru the process, as playing music does organically, what psych meds do, helping to stimulate serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin (the ‘’love molecule’) naturally. Rock to Recovery typically operates as an adjunct service to a treatment center's curriculum. Since it’s inception, Rock to Recovery has been integrated as part of over one hundred treatment programs. "I went through a rehab program, I know what it feels like. Playing my guitar was such a vibe changer for our whole milieu. We would get so silly writing songs, singing dancing on breaks. Walls would come down. The day’s struggle would fade away. I wanted a way to bring that energy to everyone that enters a treatment program. The results have been beyond anything we ever could have imagined. Watching the hopeless find hope, the lost feel purpose, the self-loathing find confidence, the miserable, dark-minded find their light and laughter again; these transformations are nothing short of magic.” -Wes Rock to Recovery has for-profit and non-profit entities. The company uses the NPO to donate services to treatment programs that otherwise would not be able to access their services. As a result Rock to Recovery has started doing fundraising concerts and holiday events. The concerts honor rockstars with the ‘Rock to Recovery Award’ for their service, and success in overcoming addiction, and assisting others in the community. Past recipients have been Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Wayne Kramer (MC5) and Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stonesour). These sober events have provided a unique resource for hope and fun in the recovery community as well as been supported by members from Guns n Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Billy Idol, Jane’s Addiction, Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray) and the late Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) to name a few.
Wesley "Wes" Geer, founder of the "G-punk" group Hed PE as well as a long-time touring guitarist of KoЯn, visited the show to talk about the things we never stop to consider would be the way they are in recovery. Geer's main passion is bringing the healing power of music to rehabs through his groundbreaking therapy program Rock to Recovery), which "was created to help soothe the restless souls of those in recovery ... we do this by creating a “band” and writing and recording songs together with Rock to Recovery’s staff of professional musicians, who are also in recovery." Artists in this episode include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, and Phantogram. Follow Wes here: Instagram (Drop the Needle does not own or claim ownership of any music used in this podcast. In a rather short period of time, Joe Polish has become one of my favorite people around. The genius marketer (who presides over The Genius Network) and I met in early 2017 and connected over the fact that we were both trying to change the message around addiction. (Related: we also connected over the fact that we were both once active drug addicts.) And so we partnered with Hal Elrod and Honoree Corder on creating a book in the Miracle Morning series that focused on addiction recovery. You can get it here! If you're not familiar with The Miracle Morning, it started as a book written by Hal Elrod. Published in 2012, it quickly became one of the highest rated books on Amazon, with over 2500 five-star reviews. The premise: changing your life starts with following certain habits and tactics every morning. I'll be honest: when this opportunity first came up, I thought, "Look, I already meditate and pray in the morning. What could this book tell me that I don't already know?" Well, here's what I learned: the day after reading it, I changed my morning routine, incorporating movement, affirmations and much more into it. There's something magical in Hal's message—perhaps because he's one of the kindest people ever, perhaps because he's experienced events that would have destroyed most of us...and come out with the most hopeful attitude I've ever experienced. Here's the concept of our particular book in the series. As many of us know, addiction can be fatal, and while it may sound glib to say something simple like attending to your morning can magically influence the course of your recovery, implementing this Miracle Morning practice can help you transform any area of your life...all before 8 am. The Miracle Morning for Addiction Recovery outlines cutting-edge research, all designed to support your recovery. Here's some of what we cover in the book: Why mornings are critically important to an addict’s success, how your alarm can be a gift, challenge, and opportunity, the Five-Minute Five-Step Snooze-Proof Wake-Up Strategy, how the Six-Minute Miracle Morning can be the remedy for an overly packed schedule and much more. (Bonus: we've included morning routines from some of our favorite folks in recovery, including Recovery 2.0's Tommy Rosen, Wes Geer from Korn, actress Mackenzie Phillips and more.) In this episode, Joe and I interview each other about our respective morning routines and how we strive to live miraculous lives.
Z-Man sits down with Wes Geer, founder of HedPE, touring guitarist with Korn, and founder of Rock to Recovery. They talk about the music scene in 90's and playing at some of the same shows. Wes talks about starting HedPE and being one of the first bands to pioneer a rock group with a DJ and how he met DJ Product. They talk about getting signed to Jive Records and getting arrested the night before their biggest showcase. Wes talks about his recovery process and what lead him to start Rock to Recovery. They talk about their peace in recovery and what the future holds.
Wes Geer may have once looked like an unlikely recovery hero. The founding member of the band Hed PE, Geer went down the path familiar to many young, wild and crazy dudes in bands...all of which culminated in a trip to rehab in 2004. After finding sobriety in 2007, Geer was asked to join the legendary band Korn and he played with them for years. But just being a rock star wasn't enough for Geer and so, in 2013, he formed Rock to Recovery. Rock to Recovery's mission sounds almost impossible: a bunch of musicians go into treatment centers and teach the (non-musical) residents there to play. Together, they write a song. Yes, non-musicians write and play a song. Does it work? Well, Rock to Recovery currently does about 400 sessions a month—at both non-profit organizations and high-end treatment centers. They also put on shows, where people like Billy Idol, Fred Durst and Mark McGrath play. In this episode, Wes and I talk about the manifestation meditation that led to his greatest epiphany, whether or not he's always been spiritual and the fact that aliens may have been tuning in on our conversation, among many other topics. NOTE: This episode is from a Facebook Live interview that we did, which means that the audio isn't as sharp as it is on regular episodes. Please bear with that! And please tune into my regular Facebook Live interviews, which take place at 4 pm PST on Tuesdays (unless I have a conflict, in which case I reschedule but announce the change on my page. Make sure you Like my page so stay up on the info!)
Former guitarist from the band Korn, Wes talks about his organization Rock To Recovery, which uses music to heal. He talks about his own struggles with addiction, his life in rock music, and his passion for helping others to recover and discover through musical expression.
