Episode 18 - “Aging Gracefully - with Starla Fortunato & Sybil Henry" Two thousand years ago the average Roman had a life expectancy of 22 years. By 1900 the average American life expectancy was about 50 - but with the advancements in medicine, health care, and technology, in 2015 it takes us almost 80 years to get to where our bodies used to burn out at age 50. So how do we make those extra years worth it? How do we take the potential Crisis of Aging and turn it into an Opportunity? Our guests Starla Fortunato and Sybil Henry are two strong insightful women who shared a lot of knowledge on the subject of Aging Gracefully - and it was obvious they're living it every day. And I'm not gonna candy coat it… this episode has a LOT of estrogen in it. But because women begin to increasingly outnumber men around the age of 30 - Today there are 128 women to every 100 men over 65, increasing to 196 women for every 100 men by age 80 - because of this, I can't help but think even our male listeners might find this conversation useful. www.DoctorWendyOConnor.com e: DrWendyOConnor@gmail.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/askdrwendy tw: @askDrWendy www.JenniJVWilson.com e: JenniferJVWilson@gmail.com fb: www.facebook.com/JenniJVWilson tw: @JenniJVWilson Guests: Starla Fortunato - Photographer www.StarlaFortunato.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/starla.fortunato tw: @StarlaFortunato Sybil Henry - Brand Style Strategist www.TheStyleConcierge.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/HiSybil tw: @SybilHenry Resources & Clips: MENTIONS - Malcolm Gladwell - “Outliers” http://gladwell.com/outliers/ Ari Seth Coen - Advanced Style (Blog, Movie, Book) http://advancedstyle.blogspot.com/ http://www.advancedstylethemovie.com/ http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Style-Ari-Seth-Cohen/dp/157687592X Julie Cameron - “The Artist's Way” http://juliacameronlive.com/ http://www.amazon.com/The-Artists-Way-Julia-Cameron/dp/1585421464 Sweetzer Cellar Wines http://sweetzer-cellars.myshopify.com/collections/all https://www.facebook.com/sweetzercellars/ https://twitter.com/sweetzercellars READING, AGING STATICS, AND INFO - http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/03/health/secrets-aging-gracefully/ http://www.webmd.com/healthy-aging/features/the-art-of-aging-gracefully http://www.ecumen.org/resources/50-tips-aging-gracefully-ecumen http://www.whitehouseconferenceonaging.gov/about/statistics.html https://www.census.gov/prod/2014pubs/p25-1140.pdf http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/older-american-health.htm MUSIC CUES - Joni Mitchell - “Down To You” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj-Dl7txva4 Yvonne De Carlo - “I'm Still Here” (from Follies) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SRl89aEvUQ Black Eyed Peas - “Smells Like Funk” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMqnOTscQnE Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - “Ten Thousand Hours” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxZPNXRT2fQ
Episode 17 - “Pet/Person Relationship: Pt. 2 - with Douglas Green" Beyond acting as alarm systems, garbage disposals, rodent control, and hunting companions, the pet/person relationship is often a familial bond, with benefits including improvement of health and longevity for both people and animals. Studies are showing that owning a pet can benefit those suffering from a myriad of health and social concerns, including a variety of mental and physical illnesses. Sure animals might be dirty, tracking mud into our homes, but studies also show that babies raised in households with pets develop less allergies and develop stronger immune systems than those who are not. Therapeutically, animals are used to promote empathy and responsibility in children and adolescents, including those on the autistic spectrum. In part 2 of this episode, we continue our conversation about the animal/human connection with Douglas Green (http://www.douglasgreenmft.com/), A marriage and family therapist here in Los Angeles, who has written a book about his own special relationship with a pet, titled "The Teachings of Shirelle: Life Lessons from a Divine Knucklehead” (www.CavalleriaPress.com). www.DoctorWendyOConnor.com e: DrWendyOConnor@gmail.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/askdrwendy tw: @askDrWendy www.JenniJVWilson.com e: JenniferJVWilson@gmail.com fb: www.facebook.com/JenniJVWilson tw: @JenniJVWilson www.DouglasGreenmft.com www.AskShirelle.com FB: https://www.facebook.com/Ask.Shirelle FB: https://www.facebook.com/TheTeachingsOfShirelle tw: @DougGreenAuthor Book - “The Teachings of Shirelle: Life Lessons From a Divine Knucklehead” - Douglas Green http://www.amazon.com/The-Teachings-Shirelle-Lessons-Knucklehead/dp/099122812X Resources & Clips: ORGANIZATIONS - http://nkla.org/ https://www.aspca.org/ ARTICLES - Article: “Can Pets Keep Us Healthy?” https://newsinhealth.nih.gov/2009/february/feature1.htm Article: “How Humans Created Cats” http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/12/how-humans-created-cats/282391/ Article: “A Brief History of House Cats” http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/a-brief-history-of-house-cats-158390681/?no-ist VIDEOS - National Geographic Channel - Brilliant Beasts - "Genius Dog" http://www.natgeotv.com/ca/brilliant-beasts/videos/genius_dog National Geographic Channel - “The Truth About Cats” http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/wild/the-truth-about-cats/ National Geographic Channel - “The Secret Life of Dogs” http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/wild/destination-wild/episodes/the-secret-life-of-dogs/ MUSIC CUES - The Shirelles - “This is Dedicated to the One I Love” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mTeVE4rTm0 Cat Stevens - “I Love My Dog” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qcqk_SEsLPU Harry Nilsson - “Best Friend” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQhVMQ5Wcg8 Ani DeFranco - “Little Plastic Castles” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfhOTopqtnQ The Cure - “Lovecats” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jCxP0d5BtI Laura Nyro & The LaBelle Sisters - "Spanish Harlem" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb6db0UM0nY The Shirelles - “Welcome Home Baby” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRReLmsFlww The Shirelles - “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo-oXk5Bjrc "Scooby Doo Theme" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_C2HJvtRDY The Shirelles - “Everybody Loves A Lover” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QztqoL66-R0
Episode 16 - “Person/Pet Relationships: Pt 1 - with Douglas Green" Animals not only share the earth with us, but are our companions, confidantes, protectors, coworkers, friends, and family... The domestication of cats and dogs runs alongside the evolution of human civilization. To many of us, our relationships with our animals are as significant as any we have with fellow humans, and the loss of them can be devastating. In the late 1970s, in Northern Israel, archeologists unearthed the buried remains of a human ancestor positioned with its hands resting on a 6-month old wolf pup – the skeletons are dated at over twelve thousand years old. Although we cannot be 100% certain of the circumstances contributing to these skeleton postures, researchers believe it's further indication of the long existence of an affectionate bond between person and pet. While dogs have been joining humans on the nomadic hunt long before we settled into agricultural societies, researchers find evidence of feline domestication may be more recent, only about ninety-five hundred years ago - when we started settling into villages and needed our furry nocturnal friends to aid in population control of rodents attracted to our grain storages. So, what part of our natural selves do animals bring us back in touch with? What lessons of life and death can we learn from our relationships with our pets? In the following episodes we explore some of the special qualities of the animal/human connection and are joined by Douglas Green (http://www.douglasgreenmft.com/), A marriage and family therapist here in Los Angeles, who has written a book about his own special relationship with a pet, titled "The Teachings of Shirelle: Life Lessons from a Divine Knucklehead” (www.CavalleriaPress.com). www.DoctorWendyOConnor.com e: DrWendyOConnor@gmail.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/askdrwendy tw: @askDrWendy www.JenniJVWilson.com e: JenniferJVWilson@gmail.com fb: www.facebook.com/JenniJVWilson tw: @JenniJVWilson www.DouglasGreenmft.com www.AskShirelle.com FB: https://www.facebook.com/Ask.Shirelle FB: https://www.facebook.com/TheTeachingsOfShirelle tw: @DougGreenAuthor Book - “The Teachings of Shirelle: Life Lessons From a Divine Knucklehead” - Douglas Green http://www.amazon.com/The-Teachings-Shirelle-Lessons-Knucklehead/dp/099122812X Resources & Clips: http://nkla.org/ https://www.aspca.org/ image of skeletons of Natufian human w/wolf pup http://news.sciencemag.org/sites/default/files/50417W_5.jpg Article: “Can Pets Keep Us Healthy?” https://newsinhealth.nih.gov/2009/february/feature1.htm Article: “Evidence for Domestication of the dog 12,000 years ago in the Natufian of Israel" http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v276/n5688/abs/276608a0.html Article: “How Humans Created Cats” http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/12/how-humans-created-cats/282391/ Article: “A Brief History of House Cats” http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/a-brief-history-of-house-cats-158390681/?no-ist Book - The Blessings of a Skinned Knee - Wendy Mogel, PhD http://www.wendymogel.com/books/skinned_knee The Chiffons - "One Fine Day" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvyOqKhKWQ4 Theme from Love Story (1970) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTSc4hBdCd0 Meghan Trainor - “Credit" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJgqrLtFTZg The Shirelles - “Mama Said" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQlImg2bm28

It seems there are million things to juggle and hundreds of people to please - how do we not get swept away by it all? With the end of the year holidays upon us, Dr. Wendy & Miss Jenni have some ideas about how to get ahead of it. They are joined by friend-of-the-show and "Singles Correspondent" Ivy Iocano to reflect on ways we can be loving and giving without sacrificing ourselves or our sanity. In Part 1, they look at some ways families can approach interfaith and multicultural issues, how one might gracefully dodge those awkward and uncomfortable moments at holiday gatherings, and when to bring a new special someone to those inner circle holiday festivities. Episode 13 - “Ashley Madison Hack: The Impact of Affairs, Technology, & Schadenfreude on Committed Relationships”: Part 2 Looking for emotional connection outside a romantic relationship might mean game over for some people, or it could just be a game some people play. In Part 2 of this episode, Wendy, Jenni, & Candace continue their conversation on the Ashley Madison hack and what it says about technology's power to prevent and distract from intimacy. These days, with the fantasy of an affair being just a click away, how do we stay focused on our partners?? How does anyone trust their partners - especially if they've been hurt before? Perhaps the answer to it all is hidden in Shakespeare's Sonnet one sixteen… tune in to find out! **Correction: in this episode Miss Jenni refers to an essay on UnMonogamy by Camille Paglia - which is incorrect. The essay entitled "UnMonogamy: Loving Tricks and Tricking Lovers” was written by author Pat Califia and is included in her book “Public Sex: The Culture of Radical Sex” (2nd edition, 2000) www.DoctorWendyOConnor.com e: DrWendyOConnor@gmail.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/askdrwendy tw: @askDrWendy www.JenniJVWilson.com e: JenniferJVWilson@gmail.com fb: www.facebook.com/JenniJVWilson tw: @JenniJVWilson www.CandaceMcKenzie.net tw: @CMcKenzieD Resources & Clips: Recommended Ashley Madison Hack Coverage - http://www.wired.com/tag/ashley-madison/ AshleyMadison.com Nancy Wilson - Face It Girl, It's Over https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQXagInaXIU Esther Perel http://www.estherperel.com/ Harville Hendrix & Helen LaKelly Hunt http://harvilleandhelen.com/ John Gottman http://www.gottman.com/ Pat Califia - Public Sex: The Culture of Radical Sex - "UnMonogamy: Loving Tricks and Tricking Lovers" http://pdfbook.caninebytes.com/read-free-online/620927.Public_Sex.html Peggy Vaughn - The Monogamy Myth http://www.dearpeggy.com/myth.html Erik Erikson's Stages of Development http://www.simplypsychology.org/Erik-Erikson.html William Shakespeare - Sonnet 116 http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/116detail.html
Episode 12 - “Ashley Madison Hack, Part 1: The Impact of Affairs, Technology, & Schadenfreude on Committed Relationships” Due to hackers exposing millions of AshleyMadison.com users, recent conversations around the globe have been more focused on technology and infidelity in committed relationships. Are online sites like Ashley Madison just the new personal ads? What constitutes an affair? Could even fantasizing become forbidden fruit? Is sexual monogamy the only way of expressing loyalty and commitment in long-term relationships? Should a partner's infidelity always be a traumatic event or is un-monogamy just another untamable part of human nature? In this episode, Dr. Wendy and I are joined by Candace Dale Mckenzie (www.candacemckenzie.net) to take a closer look at the potential impact of the Ashley Madison Hack and the psychological consequences this cyber crime might have on modern romance. www.DoctorWendyOConnor.com e: DrWendyOConnor@gmail.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/askdrwendy tw: @askDrWendy www.JenniJVWilson.com e: JenniferJVWilson@gmail.com fb: www.facebook.com/JenniJVWilson tw: @JenniJVWilson Resources: Recommended Ashley Madison Hack Coverage - http://www.wired.com/tag/ashley-madison/ AshleyMadison.com Esther Perel http://www.estherperel.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2AUat93a8Q http://www.ted.com/talks/esther_perel_rethinking_infidelity_a_talk_for_anyone_who_has_ever_loved?language=en Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Piña Colada Song) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TazHNpt6OTo Frank Sinatra - All or Nothing At All https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfeBAo-08c0 Peaches & Herb - Reunited https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaem79tZ6W4 Jill Sobule - The Girl In The Affair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnfszQjELrQ Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Faf1ch7Q9XE
Episode 11 - “Ghosting” - the Haunting Goodbye Breaking up has always been hard to do – so is “ghosting” - the haunting goodbye - just a new way of doing the same old thing – you know, that conflict avoidant thing formerly known as bailing, ditching, or blowing someone off? Disappearing without a trace, ghosting is proving itself to be the newest trend in breaking off a relationship with no contact and no explanation. Current stats show women ghost more often than men, and that the majority of those under age 30 are using digital media to break-up with people - significant or otherwise. Breaking up face-to-face or even over a phone call is becoming as rare as the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla. So, what matters more – the message or the messaging system? What do you do when being iced out with no closure? What's the etiquette if you're the ghoster or ghostee? And does ghosting speak to a larger societal or generational trend? Or is this just human nature being played out on cell phones in the hands of old and young alike? In this episode, Dr. Wendy and I are joined by Candace Dale Mackenzie (www.candacemckenzie.net) for a conversation about the psychology and impact of saying goodbye by going radio silent. www.DoctorWendyOConnor.com e: DrWendyOConnor@gmail.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/askdrwendy tw: @askDrWendy www.JenniJVWilson.com e: JenniferJVWilson@gmail.com fb: www.facebook.com/JenniJVWilson tw: @JenniJVWilson Resources: Modern Romance - by Aziz Ansari (with Eric Klinenberg) http://book.azizansari.com/ Billie Holiday - These Foolish Things https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_20tKuKtF8 Psychedelic Furs - Ghost In You https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T87u5yuUVi8
Episode 10 - "Borderline Personality and Narcissistic Personality in a Relationship: Part 2" - In part 2 of this episode, we continue our exploration of what's likely to happen when a BPD* meets an NPD** and they fall in love. Sure these are some mighty attractive people, but what's the attraction? And they can be some of the smartest people you'll ever meet, so why can't they break the fight-fuck cycle? What's the long-term likelihood these two will stay together and actually work it out? In our efforts to illustrate some of the behaviors and relationship dynamics we're talking about, we refer to popular songs, high profile personalities and or couples, and recognizable pairings from real or fictional relationships. Tweet us your own #ToxicLove sitings in movies or TV at @AskDrWendy! *It is important to note, every person is different. The information in this podcast is not meant to be used as a clinical diagnosis. **Another important thing to point out is that we believe strongly that people are not their diagnoses. Episode 9 - "Borderline Personality and Narcissistic Personality in a Relationship: Part 1" - In part one, we discuss what Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) look and feel like to the uninitiated. We explore what's likely to happen when a BPD meets a NPD and they fall in love. We point out some of the recognizable developmental similarities between these two diagnoses, and talk about what can happen when these two choose to have children together. *It's important to note that every person is different. The information in this podcast is not meant to be used as a clinical diagnosis. **Another important thing to point out is that we believe strongly that people are not their diagnoses. However, in conversation about these personality disorders professionals often resort to shorthand, referring to someone with BPD as "a borderline" or someone with NPD as “a narcissist”.
