Episode 001 - Get to know me: the Hill District blues: Are you old enough to remember the hit television police drama series “Hill Street Blues”? I know most of the exteriors were shot in Chicago but Stephen Bochco attended Carnie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and as part of his thesis, he took a drive in a police car through my neighborhood, and years later wrote the riveting tv series. According to sources close to him “The run-down, shabby, drug-ridden impression of Pittsburgh's Hill District that Bochco acquired was apparently part of the inspiration for the show.” Yes, that was the backdrop of my life from birth to age 17 in a low-income neighborhood, lovingly called “da Hill District Projects”. I was raised by a hard-working, take no prisoners, party-until-you're-the-last-one-standing divorcee. And as a child of the 60s, what kept me company were tv shows like: Wild Animal Kingdom with Marlin Perkins, Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, Wonderful World of Disney, Hawaii 5-0, plus Johnny Carson, Ed Sullivan, and Benny Hill; these shows all fueled my imagination and wanderlust.  At age 14, I was an eye-witness to a murder, that took me through grand jury and criminal trial testimonies and resulted in a 20-year prison sentence for the shooter. I also either witnessed or was related to so many other abuses, criminal behavior, drama, tragedies, and trauma that could send almost anyone straight to a psychiatrist's couch or off a rooftop. I had so many low moments in my young life that suicide was a serious consideration.  God, however, puts people in your life for a reason or a season and thankfully, because of the friendships that I formed, high school was awesome and a saving grace. Even if you don't believe in a higher power, sometimes you just need to say a little prayer or speak it into existence and trust in the answers or the signs that appear before you. Plus I wasn't going to go out like that. Suicide was just something Black people didn't do back then and neither was visiting a psychiatrist. So self-preservation became my daily mantra and I couldn't wait to leave Pittsburgh to explore the rest of the country, let alone the rest of the world.  Anyway, after short stints in the Army and college, I moved to Washington DC with my best friends and became Godmother to their 3 children. Even though I was trying to remain unaffected, my godchildren, slowly but surely, absolutely stole my heart without me realizing it and actually ruled some of my future choices. We'll discuss them in future episodes…  Anyway, I worked hard and played hard as I traveled the world while working full-time. But deep down inside, I was not happy, not content at all. Living in the USA as a black person, let alone a single black woman, has definitely not been easy and even though I succeeded in most of my career goals, I had too many awful instances that made me dream of living elsewhere. Since I did not have a college degree, my prospects of working in a foreign country were limited so my dreams shifted to The Slow Traveling Soul Sister podcast is sponsored and hosted by SelfishMe Travel. Mark Frost is one of the foremost authors, screenwriters and producers in Hollywood (and Ojai). From his early days on the stage at the famous Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, to his years in the legendary writer's room with Stephen Bochco, David Milch and others with "Hill Street Blues," Mark Frost has been creating and working with some of the best minds in the business. So in the late 1980s when he got a call from David Lynch, with whom he collaborated on another project that didn't get launched, he was all in. The quirky, moody show, which ran for two seasons in 1990 and 1991, was an instant sensation. Who killed Laura Palmer? That question consumed the attention of a curious nation. It was a family affair for Frost, as the show he co-created also starred his father as the kindly Dr. Hayward. The remake, 25 years later, brought back many of the original actors for a limited series on Showtime that took the series to even deeper and darker places, to the delight of millions of fans. We talk about many subjects, including Frost's engrossing sports books, "The Greatest Game Ever Played," and "Game Six," about the incredibly exciting game between the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox in the 1975 World Series. Frost is also involved with the conservation efforts in Ojai, having been roped in through his friend, John Broesamle, who helped found both the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and the Ojai Valley Defense Fund, on which board Frost sits. We did not get around to talking about spitball pitchers, how his golf game has been going or the Japanese conquest of Manchuria.

A seaside conversation about knowing film history, finding the story no matter your title and all the writing advice. Ever... Tony Spiridakis graduated from Albany University and immediately began teaching English at his old high school in Queens. At night, he pursued acting. He joined Circle in the Square’s Professional Workshop, which led to roles at the Williamstown Theater Festival, then his acceptance to the prestigious Yale School of Drama. From Yale, he was cast in the television series, BAY CITY BLUES, created by legendary producer Stephen Bochco, alongside Sharon Stone. Acting took him to Europe, where he starred in HAREM with Omar Sharif, THE AMERICAN WAY with Dennis Hopper, DEATHWISH III with Charles Bronson, and in director Stanley Kubrick’s FULL METAL JACKET. Mr. Kubrick inspired him to try his hand at writing. In his first screenplay, QUEENS LOGIC, Tony co-starred with Kevin Bacon, John Malkovich, Joe Mantegna and Jamie Lee Curtis. Suddenly, he was writing scripts for powerhouse producers Scott Rudin, Laura Ziskin, John Davis and Harvey Weinstein. Known for creating great roles for actors, he wrote for Academy Award winners Dustin Hoffman, Diane Keaton and Richard Dreyfuss, as well as Eddie Murphy, Chazz Palminteri and Giancarlo Giannini. He co-wrote the romantic comedy IF LUCY FELL, with Ben Stiller and Sarah Jessica Parker. His first film as writer-director, THE LAST WORD, starred Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton. He directed the indie-winning film NOISE, with Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”); TINSELTOWN, with Ron Perlman and Emmy winner Joe Pantoliano; BEYOND THE ASHES, with Tony Goldwyn and Janeane Garofalo; his documentary, DRIVING TO GROUND ZERO, captured a road trip from Los Angeles to lower Manhattan during the terrifying week of 9-11. In television, he co-created the series THE HEIGHTS with Eric Roth, Academy Award for “Forrest Gump” and Aaron Spelling, which ran on FOX network. The Heights earned a gold record and a number one single on Billboard, “How Do You Talk To An Angel.” He had the honor of writing with FBI Agent Joe Pistone, the real-life “Donnie Brasco”, for the CBS series, FALCONE. On stage, his plays were produced at the Mark Taper Forum, the Odyssey and Open Fist theaters in Los Angeles. He also produced and acted in Academy and Tony Award winner Doug Wright’s first play, CALLBACKS, with his dear friend, three-time Emmy winner Michael E. Knight. Tony attributes his accomplishments to the quality of teachers, and friends: Uta Hagen, Nikos Psacharopoulos, Geraldine Page, Michael Kahn, Larry Moss and the incomparable Bob Krakower. He’s been a screenwriting mentor at the Hamptons Film Festival, taught film production at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film, and co-founded the Manhattan Film Institute, a boutique conservatory, alongside his life partner Lisa Gillooly. Currently, he is writing a new series, OLIVER’S ARMY, for TNT network, and a screenplay, INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR, under option to Weintraub Films. Tony is the proud father of two – Nikos and Dimitri – and with Lisa and her four – Richard, Lauren, Lianne and Elizabeth – they divide their time between Orient, New York and Sherman Oaks, California.
