THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL EPISODE. Please check out the full podcast episode on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture The 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held last night! Daniel Howat and Giovanni Lago initially joined me to recap the show on Sunday night, but unfortunately, we forgot to hit record. As a result, Giovanni Lago and I were joined by Amy Kim for the first time on the show as a guest to review the winners for our second recording last night. We expected "Adolescence" and "The Studio" to dominate the evening. Still, it was a real nail-biter between "Severance" and "The Pitt" to find out which one would take Outstanding Drama Series. What did we think of the winners, the show's presentation, and Nate Bargatze's hosting? Please tune in to find out as we discuss these points, the speeches, shocking wins, and more in our reactions podcast. This will be our last Next Best Series Podcast episode for now. We don't know when we will return during the Oscar season, but there's still plenty of good television to catch up on. Hopefully, the answer is sooner rather than later. We thank you for all of your support throughout this season and hope you enjoy it! See you soon! The TV show Severance debuted on Apple TV+ in February 2022. It was created by writer Dan Erickson, and developed into a series by director and executive producer Ben Stiller. He directed the pilot and most of the episodes. After the first season came out, Severance was nominated for 14 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, and it won two Emmys: for Main Title Design and for Musical Composition. I love this show, and the main title sequence is incredible. I was so excited to get to talk to the composer, Theodore Shapiro, about how he made the main title theme music. In this episode, you'll hear how that theme first came into existence in a totally different form, and then, how Teddy re-imagined it to become the final version. For more, visit songexploder.net/severance.

It premiered on AMC on February 8, 2015. The show ran for six seasons and a total of 63 episodes. It ended on August 15, 2022. The show had a short-lived animated prequel on AMC+, entitled Slippin' Jimmy. The series chronicles the evolution of small-time attorney Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) into the morally corrupt lawyer Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad. It also reveals Saul's future living under an assumed name. Other returning characters include his eventual fixer Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) and drug distributor Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito).  New characters include Jimmy's romantic interest Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), his brother Chuck (Michael McKean), Chuck's legal partner Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian), drug dealer Nacho Varga (Michael Mando), and cartel leader Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton). Like Breaking Bad, many critics consider Better Call Saul one of the greatest television shows of all time. Some even hail it as better. It was nominated for 53 Emmy Awards with no wins (a record for nominations without a win). Nominations included Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Aaron and Alex chat about their exposure to Better Call Saul before going into the two-night series premiere, the general plot, the performances, the connections to Breaking Bad, and the series finale. They also ponder the potential for another show set in the Breaking Bad universe.  For a podcast on another prestigious TV series, you can listen to Aaron and Josh talk about Game of Thrones. Better Call Saul is streaming on Netflix.

We're joined by 3 gamers: Chris, Sergio, and Sarah for their takes on what the TV series got right (hint: A LOT), some differences between the show and the video games, and some perspective into gaming and adaptations as a whole. We really appreciate their perspectives given Melanie and Emily are NOT gamers, at all, and approached our "Fallout" coverage as TV viewers. Let's just say we learned a lot! What better a time to highlight the "Fallout" TV adaptation than ahead of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards Award ceremony on September 15, 2024? Amazon MGM Studios has received 62 nominations, including 17 for Fallout. Walton Goggins got a nod for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for "Fallout," but we're pretty bitter our girl Ella Purnell (Jackie in #Yellowjackets) didn't get one. BOO! Twenty-five years ago, on September 22, 1999, one of the most beloved television shows of all time premiered on NBC: The West Wing, starring Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, John Spencer, and a whole host of other talented actors, including our two guests today—but more on them in a moment. The political drama was created and largely written by Aaron Sorkin, one of my personal favorite writers, and aired from that day in 1999 until May 14, 2006, totaling seven seasons. Across its 154 episodes, we become immersed, as the title suggests, in the West Wing of the White House, where the Oval Office and the offices of those that work closely with the president are located, during the fictional Democratic administration of President Josiah Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen. The West Wing is regularly and often ranked among the best television shows of all time, and during its run won three Golden Globe Awards and a whopping 26 Primetime Emmy Awards, including the award for Outstanding Drama Series, which it won four consecutive times from 2000 to 2003. Beloved cast member John Spencer, who played chief of staff Leo McGarry, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on December 16, 2005, about a year after his character experienced a nearly fatal heart attack on the show. This, naturally, rocked the cast, and the show ended five months after his death. Today on the show we have two cast members, Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack, here to discuss their new book What's Next?: A Backstage Pass to the West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service, which is out August 13. This book is so great, and it's long—825 pages' worth of interviews and oral history about a show that changed culture. Today, Melissa, Mary, and I talk about what made The West Wing such a cultural touchstone, the show's enduring commitment to public service, the group chat that continues still today, what the book's title means, the show's legacy, and so much more. Melissa played Carol Fitzpatrick on the show, an assistant to press secretary C.J. Cregg (played by Allison Janney). In addition to her career as an actress—she has also appeared on Grey's Anatomy and in The Truman Show—she is also the founder of Voices in Harmony, a nonprofit community theater in L.A., and back in November 2013 joined Justice for Vets as its Senior Director. Mary played Deputy National Security Adviser Kate Harper on The West Wing and has appeared in films like Private Parts, Deep Impact, True Crime, and Mystery, Alaska, and on shows like Murder One, ER, In Plain Sight, Scandal, The Newsroom, Will & Grace, and The Kids Are Alright. I can't wait for you to hear this conversation!   What's Next?: A Backstage Pass to the West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service by Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack

House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019), it is the second television series in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik served as the showrunners for the first season. Based on parts of Martin's 2018 book Fire & Blood, the series begins about 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest, nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. Featuring an ensemble cast, the show portrays the events leading up to the decline of House Targaryen, a devastating war of succession known as the "Dance of the Dragons." House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019, with casting beginning in July 2020 and principal photography starting in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The series premiered on August 21, 2022, with the first season consisting of ten episodes. The series was renewed for a second season five days after its premiere. Sapochnik departed as showrunner after the first season, leaving Condal to serve as the sole showrunner for the second season. The second season premiered on June 16, 2024, with eight episodes. In June 2024, ahead of the second-season premiere, the series was renewed for a third season. The first season received positive reviews, with praise for its character development, visual effects, writing, score by Ramin Djawadi, and performances. However, the pacing, specifically of the time jumps, and the dark lighting of some scenes were criticized. The series premiere was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on the first day, the biggest in HBO's history. At the 80th Golden Globe Awards, House of the Dragon won Best Television Series – Drama, and Emma D'Arcy was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama. The series earned nine Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and won three British Academy Television Craft Awards.

What's wrong with Larry Abbot?  The radio star is having bouts of fear, perhaps a remnant of childhood trauma.  Otherwise, everything seems to be swell:  he's engaged to be married to his scene partner, the delightful Vickie Pearle.  But the radio show, hosted by the Manhattan Mystery Theater and lead sponsor Ralston-Purina are concerned about Larry's mental health, so they've hired Larry's Uncle Paul, a psychiatrist. to employ a radical cure that will rid Larry of his fears in no more than 36 hours.  And off go Larry and Vickie to Larry's ancestral stomping grounds, a palatial estate that bears a striking resemblance to, well, let's just say we've seen it before.  Just like the Abbot family butler, Pfister, and the maid, the diminutive Rachel – there's something familiar about them as well.  What's new are the cast of characters that assemble at the estate for Larry and Vickie's wedding – Larry's cousins Charles, Nora, Susan, and Francis Jr., all of whom seem to have ulterior motives of one kind of another, some of which may include death or inheriting the fortune of the family matriarch, Aunt Kate.  Will Larry and Vickie make it through the next couple days intact?  Will we, the audience, figure out what's really going on?  Maybe so, but we'll have to sit through all 82 minutes of this film to find out. In this episode, David Chen and his wife @joyonapping offer their overall thoughts on the show, why it continues to be compelling after all these years, and what the next seasons might have in store.Programming Note: While Decoding TV will cover Season 5 of The Crown, we're still working out the details of our coverage. At the very least, we can promise there will be one more Decoding TV podcast episode discussing season 5 but we may or may not have weekly coverage given that the show will be released binge-style on Netflix beginning November 9th. Stay tuned to Decoding TV for more details. The Crown is returning to Netflix on November 9th for its fifth and penultimate season. Its last season drew attention for its depiction of Princess Diana and her marriage to Charles - an event that even many millennials such as myself remember in their lifetimes. Season five promises to begin following that story to its horrifying conclusion (the show currently plans to end with season six). The production of The Crown is estimated to cost over $100 million per season, making it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made. It's also one of the most critically acclaimed: The Crown has been nominated for hundreds of awards since its premiere in 2017, including Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys and Best Television Drama at the Golden Globes. In 2021, it won all seven drama categories at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the first show to ever do so.
