Note: At the end of the episode, Wiz states the next review will be All The King's Men directed by Robert Rossen. Unfortunately, Wiz has a cold and will not be recording an episode with Zero this week. So, next week, Zero and Wiz will review The Manchurian Candidate directed by John Frankenheimer. Sorry about that. Wiz DOES NOT RECOMMEND Thirteen Days Historical films can be a pretty thorny premise to get right. Either you can evoke the feeling of a person or time in history or emulate it so damn well it feels like you are in the room with them. Thirteen Days, Roger Donaldson's retelling of the Cuban Missile Crisis, is a film that I'm not sure what it's trying to do. If it's trying to be an emulation of the time and the people involved, there are a few things that the film fumbled on. Let's start with the main characters: Bobby Kennedy, played by Steven Culp, is probably the best of the three who looks and sounds the part well enough, but he does slip in specific scenes. John F. Kennedy, played by Bruce Greenwood, looks the most like his real counterpart, but sounds nothing like him except when he's upset. Kenneth O'Donnell, played by Kevin Costner, is the worst of the three…and of course he is the one you see the most. Not only does Costner not even look like him, he also doesn't sound like him. In fact, Costner has one of the worst New England accents I've heard in a film. If you were going the route of feeling like you are in the room with these titans of history, the illusion is pretty much shattered when you can look on screen and you have to remind yourself who these guys are supposed to play. Now, if the film is trying to evoke a feeling of a person or place in time, the film takes a few stylistic choices that don't work the way that the film intends: The film has scenes that utilize archival footage from the times. It's effective at first, but then the film randomly implements it with no precise reason. There are scenes that are archival, but there are also that have actors playing the scene and neither seem to be of any importance. Another thing that doesn't have a good reason to be there is the transition to black and white. There are scenes that randomly start in black and white then transition to color…and the reason Roger Donaldson gives is he wanted to create a historical feeling akin to photos from Life Magazine. This fails since it feels randomly placed. These issues are further compounded by the slow, drawn out nature of the film. A slower pace could help with creating tension or developing characters to become more engrossed in the film…but the film does neither. The first hour goes on for way too long being hung up on details that could have been cut for brevity or pace. The film does pick up towards the second half, but the need to hasten the film is still desired. In honesty, Thirteen Days is also kind of a throwback for historical epics as well. The film is a clear good guy/bad guy dynamic with a political thriller feel…and as such the moral grays that you may be used to now is not present. But if you look at what I'm saying and say “actually I kind of miss movies like this”, then you should give the film a try. But Thirteen Days, as accurate as it may be, is a film that could have actually benefited from some creative licensing.

BOATS THIS WEEK (OCT 14-20, 2024) — This Wednesday is the anniversary of Marie Antoinette's execution in 1793 that we saw inn the opening sequence of Ridley Scott's Napoleon (2023). After that, we'll travel exactly 169 years from 1793 to 1962, because Wednesday is also depicted in Thirteen Days (2000) as it's showing the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis. For our final historical event from the movies this week, we'll hop to October 19th, 1781 as it's shown in The Patriot (2000) to see how it shows the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.  After learning about this week's birthdays from historical figures in the movies, we'll wrap up this episode by comparing history with another of Ridley Scott's movies, The Last Duel, which released in the U.S. on October 15th, 2021. This week Sara is joined by actor, musician, and nap ninja Charles Esten. The two discuss Sara's short lived acting career as a guest star on the show Nashville with Charles and how Charles embraces his characters as an actor. Charles not only shares stories about his acting career, but he also dives into how music was always a dream of his. Charles proves that he is not just another actor who wants to sing.   About Charles: Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles "Chip" Esten was raised in Alexandria, VA and attended T.C. Williams High School (made famous in the film "Remember the Titans.") He then attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, where he graduated with a degree in economics and met his wife, Patty. While in Williamsburg, he was lead singer/songwriter in a popular local band. Esten made his theatrical debut in London when he portrayed Buddy Holly, singing, acting and playing guitar in the hit West End musical "Buddy." In that role he was honored to perform for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and eventually President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush at The White House. He was also very honored to perform with Jerry Allison and Joe B. Mauldin, Buddy's original hitmaking bandmates, the Crickets. It was during his run as Buddy that Esten first appeared on the original British version of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?," with Ryan Stiles and Greg Proops. When "Whose Line" came to ABC, he became a recurring cast member and frequent song improvisor. Since then he has appeared on Drew Carey's Improvaganza and toured frequently, performing live improv shows with Stiles, Proops and Jeff B. Davis. Esten's many early television credits include recurring roles on "Big Love," "Enlightened," "The Office" and "ER." Besides being the father on Disney Channel's "Jessie," he has been a Klingon on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," a secretary on "Murphy Brown" and Kelly Bundy's fiance on the series finale of "Married with Children." His film credits include "Swing Vote," "Thirteen Days," "61*" and "The Postman." Surpassing 21 million streams for his music to date, Esten is a 2018 Guinness World Records title holder for the "Most consecutive weeks to release an original digital single by a music act" after delivering 54 original songs once a week for 54 straight weeks.   Pre-order Sara's new album, Unbroke out 6/7: https://ffm.to/seunbroke   LET'S BE SOCIAL: Follow Charles Esten: Insta: (@charlesesten) Twitter: @CharlesEsten) TikTok: @charlesesten) Youtube: (@CharlesEstenOfficial) Spotify: (@Charles Esten) Apple Music: (@Charles Esten) Facebook: (https://www.facebook.com/officialcharlesesten?mibextid=LQQJ4d) Website: (https://www.charlesesten.com)   Follow Diving in Deep Podcast: Instagram -(@divingindeeppod) TikTok - (@divingindeeppod) Twitter - (@divingindeeppod) Facebook - (@divingindeeppod)   Follow Sara Evans: Instagram - (@saraevansmusic) TikTok - (@saraevansmusic) Twitter - (@saraevansmusic) Facebook - (@saraevansmusic)   Produced and Edited by: The Cast Collective (Nashville, TN) YouTube -  @TheCastCollective ) Instagram - (@TheCastCollective) Twitter - (@TheCastCollective)   Directed by: Erin Dugan Edited By: Sean Dugan, Corey Williams, Tara Down, & Michaela Dolph https://www.thecastcollective.com

This week on On Story we're joined by David Self, the writer behind films like Road to Perdition and Thirteen Days. In this episode, Self dissects his career breaking into the industry to writing crime and historical dramas.  David Self, having been born into an itinerant family of community college and high school teachers, he broke with family tradition and spent most of his waking hours trying to break into Hollywood. In 1994 he found success and was hired to pen the remake of the 1963 film The Haunting for Steven Spielberg. His credits also include Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days, and Wolfman. Crime and thriller film, Road to Perdition, is an adaptation of the DC Comics graphic novel series of the same name. Starring Tom Hanks, it follows the story of  a mob enforcer's son in 1930s Illinois who witnesses a murder, forcing him and his father to take to the road down a path of redemption and revenge. Thirteen Days is a tale of truths about how the Kennedy administration struggled to contain the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The Haunting is a story about how a study of fear escalates into a heart-stopping nightmare for a professor and three subjects trapped in a mysterious mansion.  Moderator Barbara Morgan sat down with David Self for a panel about his work at the Austin Film Festival.   Clips of Thirteen Days courtesy of Beacon Pictures. But for a man who was right in the middle of it it was more than just a worrisome time, he knew what was happening because he was involved in getting ready for what was possible to be a nuclear war and with a Russian invasion of the Florida Peninsula.   And being right in the middle of it and knowing what was happening and label to happen next he can tell you the story of how we came so very close to where it could've been a humanity ending conflict. So join me as my friend Jim McKay shares with you his personal story of his involvement in the crisis that almost brought an end to humanity as we know it.   Stan Hustad

The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis is reckoned to be one of the most perilous events in history, when the World  faced a looming nuclear collision between the United States and Soviet Union. During those weeks, the world gazed into the abyss of potential annihilation.I speak with Sir Max Hastings whose new history  Abyss: The Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 tells the story from the viewpoints of national leaders, Russian officers, Cuban peasants, American pilots and British disarmers. The period is brought to life with eye-witness interviews, archive documents and diaries, White House tape recordings, and top-down analysis. More than purely a focus on the 13 days of the crisis, the book provides context through the Cold War experiences of Fidel Castro's Cuba, Nikita Khrushchev's Russia, and Kennedy's America. Among the areas we discuss are how Cuba became a crisis, the failure of intelligence on both sides,  and those nail-biting Thirteen Days in which Armageddon beckoned. Buy the book an support the podcast https://amzn.to/3rlPLsMCold War history is disappearing; however, a simple monthly donation will keep this podcast on the air.
