This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is celebrating American Craft Beer Week with a great group of guests. On the show is Brian Strumke from Stillwater Artisanal in Seattle, WA; Ryan Brower from Gear Patrol in Brooklyn, NY; and Jean Broillet from Tired Hands Brewing Company in Ardmore, PA. To kick things off, Brian introduces his pandemic project: Fast Fashion with Matt Storm (The Masonry Pizza), in Seattle, Washington. Brian and Jean then quickly veer off course, offering a preview into their epic, convertible-style road trip planned across the Pacific Highway. Switching gears, Ryan asks Jean to reflect on the current American beer palette, which Jean feels is in a bit of a recoil period. Brian agrees that everyone is leaning into comforting, obvious flavors right now, but is hopeful that tons of experimentation will soon break-through the cracks. As an example of obscurity, Jean tells everyone the hidden secret in the Tired Hands Milkshake IPA, and explains how he gets away with having a strange recipe but a great-tasting end product. To wrap things up, Brian gives us a preview of an upcoming music project, Jean declares that the new trend in beer isn’t beer, and Jimmy asks the gang what a 21-year-old, new beer drinker should try out this summer.Photo Courtesy of Jean Broillet.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Kung Pao Chicken Beer? We know what you're thinking. Someone was brave enough to combine Chinese food into a craft beer. FINALLY! Now you don't have to make your ramen noodles with Pabst anymore (#PBRnoodles). There's got to be a better way! And now there is! This unique blend of flavors is brewed to taste like Kung Pao sauce. We chat about the history of Kung Pao chicken in America, the rise of Sriracha as a dominant hot sauce, and how Stillwater Artisanal has been making a name for themselves with unique craft blends. Brewed with chili powder, ginger, Sichuan pepper, sea salt, and peanut extract, this is one that has to be tried to believe. So does this motley blend of spices and cultures work? Well, Stillwater Artisanal has been awarded the No. 2 slot for "Best New Brewer in the World" by Ratebeer.com, and ranks in the global 100 list. Not shabby. We do love an underdog. Cheers.
Hey Brewcrew, We had an amazing time discussing all the different types of armor that characters have worn in the past. Yup, even duct tape armor makes the list! Once we heard PK’s suggestion for the topic we were surprised we hadn’t thought of it sooner. We also announce the winner of the Mad Swede Brewing giveaway. GoB Radio steps back into a time when the world still made sense to bring you this episode. Recorded a few weeks ago, we talk about a recent trip to Conneticut breweries with our good friend Ed from W.E.Eat. Episode Notes Episode 53: Stillwater Artisanal’s On Fleek Imperial StoutIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time of the week again where we pick a bottle from that massive craft brew aisle hoping to find a hidden treasure. This week we’re going to take a look at On Fleek Imperial Stout by Stillwater Artisanal in Stratford, Connecticut. Is this one as picture perfect as the name suggests? Let’s find out!On Fleek pours like any good stout should—black and opaque. It’s thick in the glass like motor oil. It smells of coffee and molasses with a little tang in the very background, barely noticeable at first. But what about the taste? The first thing I notice about on Fleek is that it seems to be rather aggressively carbonated for a stout. Where most stouts nowadays have soft, foamy bubbles this one is actually quite prickly to the tongue. The flavor is at once coffee bitter and toffee sweet, maybe just a little bit earthy on the end like the smell of the earth after a good hard rain. There’s just a bit of alcohol flavor in there but it’s not overwhelming and then, at the very end of the swallow a little bit of chocolate syrup right around the edges.I like On Fleek. It’s a tasty stout with decent flavor and a good mouthfeel. It’s thick but not unpleasant and that aggressive carbonation actually makes it more interesting rather than detracting from the flavors. If you’re a stout enthusiast, this is one that I think you will like. Just drink with caution—that 13% Alcohol by Volume will catch up with you quickly!Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I take a look at Raspberry Blonde by Lead Dog Brewing in Reno, Nv. Is this one the fruit trip we’ve been waiting for or will it end up the butt of another blonde joke? We’ll find out next week! Look for links to this week’s beer and brewery in the show notes. This week nomadic beer cultist Brian Strumke and visual disrupter Mike Van Hall of Stillwater Artisanal search for creative rules to break, from flipping the sacred to Action Bronson collabs. Mike and Brian hate on coriander and triangles, Mathew mourns the death of Jon Snow, and Eddie feels the wet-nat
Thats right. Action Bronson collaborated with Stillwater Artisanal New York and made a dry hopped sour with muscat grapes. We drank it. #tapgeeks @tapgeeks
It's that time of the year when everyone thrusts their favourite games down your throat. We're no different except it's accompanied by several beers to ease it down. Lucy, Ben and Aadil start off with a few honourable mentions then launch into their top ten games. We've no rules here as you know, so these are games we've enjoyed this year even if they didn't release in 2018. For those all important beverages Ben and Lucy are drinking The Trilogy MMXVIII from Northern Monk and friends. These beers are brewed to showcase Malts, Yeast and Hops and are Malt - A Brut IPA with Whiplash, Yeast - A Sour IPA with Verdant and Hops - A Triple IPA with Garage. Aadil has three beers that he's tried to match alongside Ben and Lucy. He has to start 'Side Control' IPL from Marble. Follows with a sour pilsner from Cloudwater and Stillwater Artisanal called 'Tangible Object' and finishes on 'Zenne-Like' a Belgian IPA from Magic Rock and Brasserie De La Senne. After today's epic we're having next week off but will be back in the first week of the new year. Have an awesome few weeks.

Today we spotlight Whipped Peaches and Cream Nitro Smoothie Sour Ale. The retro label design font and color choice instant screamed super sexy 80s; and it pours exactly the same.

Get ready, folks! For this season finale, Ryan and Alex try the whopping sixteen-percenter that is Stillwater Artisanal’s “Collaborations Are For Lovers.” Straight from their website, Stillwater Artisanal was started in 2010 and is the brainchild of Baltimore native Brian Strumke, whose past life as an internationally renowned electronica DJ and producer strangely led him down a path to crafting some of the world’s most unique and highest rated beers. And now, in 2018 Stillwater Artisanal still stands tall. Collaborations Are For Lovers hits you hard with coffee flavor. Following this, mango flavors can be subtly noted while the vanilla notes add a nice sweetness to the drink. All these flavors coming together do a great job of hiding the high 16% ABV. We’ll also be calling fellow beer podcaster and enthusiast Cee Certified Brew Head, from the very popular Beer and Other Shhh podcast. This week on FDB - we fantasize about being the world champion of using the dishwasher, learn how poor decisions could cost your child their name, learn where the name ‘beer’ comes from, and more! Now please kick back, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer. Have you heard of Union Craft Brewing in Baltimore? Then you probably fall into one of two categories: You love their beer, and you already know how awesome Union head brewer Kevin Blodger is; or You love their beer, and now it's time to get to know Kevin Blodger. (There's probably a third category of not liking their beer, and thus not caring about who Kevin Blodger is... but if that sounds like you, we may not be able to be friends, so let's just move on.) Kevin Blodger, Union Craft Brewing head brewer, all-around badass One sunny Friday morning not too long ago, I made my way to Baltimore to sit down with Kevin in Union's taproom. During our chat, we talked about: How he got his start in brewing and his background at Gordon Biersch and District Chophouse. Upcoming collaborations with Goonda Beersmiths, Oliver Brewing Co. and Stillwater Artisanal. Why the first day they ever brewed their Duckpin was the worst day ever. Moving to their new space — the Union Collective — and the community-focused vision behind their new space. Bars vs. brewery taprooms -- what's the difference? How it felt to have Guinness’ interests as a foreign company prioritized ahead of local Maryland brewers. "Shelfies" vs. limited releases.... and much more! Okay, Here’s the Episode “When I look back on it, we were doing something really cool. We were training as German brewers … We were getting a formal brewing education through our practices.” “We’ve got all of these great breweries here already -- why not do everything you can to help them shine?” “I wish that at some point [Del. Talmadge Branch] had reached out to us, so we can show him what we do here…” “There isn’t a single brewer in the state that I don’t like, that I’m not happy to see every time I see them.” “I hate this saying that if you can buy a beer on the shelf, it’s not as good as a limited release.” Related Articles and Content The Union Collective (and coverage by the Baltimore Sun) My interview with Del. Reviewing the movie The Innocents, Thai Kitchen by Yada, and On Fleek Double Imperial Stout by Stillwater Artisanal in collaboration with Casita Cerveceria
This show's featured style is wheat! And we review an old favorite from Triton, the Fieldhouse Wheat. We compare it to Stillwater Artisanal's The Devil is Other People sour smoked wheat ale. I'm not sure any two wheats could be any further apart on the wheaty spectrum that is wheat beer. Adam provides one of his most disgusting beer sounds ever, and Pete may have located the sounds of a Rhino in heat. So, if you're on safari, make sure you turn the volume down.
Quite a lineup this week with beers from Shell's, Stillwater Artisanal, and Untitled Art to try and talk about. The Beer talk continues with a discussion of the now defunct 3rd Sign label and their legal battle with Wisconsin Distributors. We also review Solemn Oath Brewery's Snaggle Tooth Bandana, which we compare to an Isthmus retraction, Marvel vs DC, Willy street facial hair, and Alien.Break Music Provided by the Whiskey Farm If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element
Lawyer turned artist, who deep down was always an artist and just gave in to what made him happy and brought pure enjoyment through his work is the story of Mike Van Hall. We had the opportunity to speak with him and learn about his craft, his story and how through minimalism he is able to bring the two breweries' (Stillwater Artisnal & Aslin Beer Co.) can and label work to life through vivid and lively art design. His appreciation for the legacy and importance of art was also not lost on us. It was genuine and selfless, which made me want to learn more about it in the process.
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, we’ll chat about some of the best Spring craft beers brewing out there to into your home brewery! We’d like to welcome to the show Iain Kyle (Jolly Pumpkin Event Coordinator), Daniel Ohly (JP Brand Manager), Brian Strumke (Stillwater Artisanal), Stephen Valand (Brooklyn Brew Shop), and Erica Shea.
