Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast, where each week I recommend four films I think you should check out. This week, I've picked a mix of holiday movies that range from heartwarming to hilariously chaotic. Whether you're looking for some nostalgia, laughs, or a little Christmas chaos, these films have something to offer. First up is…One Magic Christmas (1985)This film has a quiet charm that's perfect for the holiday season. Starring Mary Steenburgen, it tells a story of family, second chances, and finding the true spirit of Christmas. What's interesting about the movies is how grounded it feels, even with its supernatural elements. One of my favorite bit of casting in this film is Harry Dean Stanton, who plays a guardian angel, a role that feels tailor-made for his calm, understated presence.Mixed Nuts (1994)This is a screwball Christmas comedy that might not have gotten the love it deserved when it came out. Directed by Nora Ephron, it has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, and even a young Adam Sandler. The movie is set at a suicide crisis hotline office during the holidays, which makes for plenty of chaotic, offbeat humor. The film's quirky tone might feel unusual, but if you stick with it, there are a lot of funny moments. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning, featuring Louis Armstrong's version of “Christmas in New Orleans” and an original song by Sandler, among many others. The Ref (1994)With an apt working title of, Hostile Hostages, this dark comedy, which stars Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey is one of those Christmas movies that focuses on dysfunction. Leary plays a thief who ends up stuck with a bickering married couple on Christmas Eve, and the results are sharp, biting, and weirdly festive. It is a strange combo, but The Ref somehow manage to balance its humor with just enough heart. Trapped in Paradise (1994)This one leans more into the slapstick side of comedy, with Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey as three brothers who get caught up in a bank heist in a small town during Christmas. The small-town setting adds a proper holiday feel, but the movie's about as chaotic as you'd expect with this cast. Although weird, the chaos is not centered around Cage for a change. He gives a grounded performance. Nicolas Cage has said in interviews that filming this movie was a challenge due to constant rewrites and freezing temperatures on location in Ontario, Canada. Despite the problems on the set, the end result, has a charm that makes it worth revisiting. Those are my recommendations for the holiday season. They are four holiday movies that have a solid mix of magic, dysfunction, and comedy. I hope you'll give one (or all) of them a shot this season. Let me know what you think, and I'll see you soon for more recommendations on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! One encounters all sorts of things during the holiday season. Office parties, strange food, strange people. And your entertainment options are just as varied. Luckily we managed to put down our cocktails and watched some stuff to help you figure out just how to spend your precious time. We start with "Poor Things" which starsEmma Stone as Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. It's one of the stragest movies to ever grace the silver screen. So do listen to what we have to say about it. Then there's "Maestro" which chronicles the lifelong relationship of conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein and actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. He's played by Bradley Cooper and she's played by Carey Mulligan and it'll soon be on Netflix. we'll also tell you about "American Fiction." It stars Jeffrey Wright as a novelist who's fed up with the establishment profiting from "Black" entertainment uses a pen name to write a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain. And for you mystery fans there's "Anatomy of a Fall" in which a woman is suspected of her husband's murder, and their blind son faces a moral dilemma as the main witness. Surely that's enough for a normal podcast but we've also got "Wonka," the prequel in which a young and poor Willy Wonka discovers that the candy industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers. Then there's "Saltburn." It's about a student at Oxford University whio finds himself drawn into the world of a charming and aristocratic classmate, who invites him to his eccentric family's sprawling estate for a summer never to be forgotten. That's just the big screen stuff. For you streaming folks there's "The Fall of the House of Usher" about two ruthless siblings who build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one. And then there's "A Murder at the End of the World" in which Darby Hart, a Gen Z amateur sleuth, attempts to solve a murder at a secluded retreat. It was during this time that Steven got his big break and was booked for his first “Tonight Show” appearance on Friday, August 6, 1982. The king of late night enjoyed the performance so much he invited Steven to appear again the following Thursday, a rarity on “The Tonight Show.” His back-to-back appearances helped put his fledgling career into high gear. The comic soon found himself performing his off-beat routines on “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” and numerous trips back to “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.”Wright expanded his comedy career to include comedy albums, film and television appearances. His 1985 debut album, I Have A Pony, earned him a Grammy nomination. In 1985, Steven starred in his first HBO Special “A Steven Wright Special.” In 1989, Steven was honored with an Academy Award for Best Short Film for his film entitled “The Appointments of Dennis Jennings” in which he starred and co-wrote. Other stars of the film included “Roseanne's” Laurie Metcalf and British comedian, Rowan Atkinson. In September of 1990, Steven starred in his second stand-up special for HBO called “Wicker Chairs and Gravity.” The special included stand-up from The Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto and a short film shot on location in New York and New Jersey.Steven has been seen in numerous films including “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Mike Meyers' “So I Married An Axe Murderer,” Oliver Stone's “Natural Born Killers,” and Nora Ephron's “Mixed Nuts.” Steven was the voice of the DJ, K-Billy in “Reservoir Dogs” and starred with John Cleese and Jack Palance in New Line's animated film, “The Swan Princess” as the voice of Speed, the turtle. Steve also appeared as a sitcom actor in MGM's “Speechless” with Harry Shearer, and as a Mountie in the MGM release “Canadian Bacon”, opposite the late John Candy. In 1999, Steven played a guest starring role in Albert Brooks' film “The Muse” starring Brooks, Sharon Stone, Andie MacDowell, and Jeff Bridges. In ‘98 he played a supporting role in Dave Chappelle's “Half-Baked” and was a featured voice in “Babe 2: Pig in the City”.-more-2-2-2-2 Wright BioSteven wrote, directed and stars in the 1999 short film, “One Soldier,” the story of a man obsessed with the unanswerable questions in life. The film was screened at numerous film festivals and can be seen on the Independent Film Channel. Steven was also seen in the Jim Jarmusch film “Coffee and Cigarettes” and the film “The Aristocrats.” In October of 2006, Steven premiered the hour special, “When The Leaves Blow Away,” on Comedy Central. The special was released on DVD in April 2006 and includes Steven's 1999 short film “One Soldier” and a segment of a 1988 performance at a Boston comedy club.Steven's second CD, “I Still Have A Pony,” was released by Comedy Central Records on September 25, 2007. The CD earned Steven his second Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album.Steven was honored as the first inductee into The Boston Comedy Hall of Fame on December 15, 2008. The ceremony included performances by legendary Boston comedians Tony V, Don Gavin, Lenny Clarke, Kenny Rogerson, Steve Sweeney, Mike Donovan, Barry Crimmins, Mike McDonald and Fran Solomita. On June 2, 2009, Warner Bros. Bowfinger could not have come at a better time for any of its three biggest names. In 1999, Frank Oz, who had a string of successful collaborations with Steve Martin, was coming right off the critical and commercial hit In and Out in 1997, which happened to star 1999's most cursed star yet, one we've talked a lot about lately, Kevin Kline. But Martin was in need of a return to form, having come off a string of duds like A Simple Twist of Fate, Mixed Nuts (now a cult Christmas favorite), Father of the Bride 2 and the dire Sgt. Bilko and The Out-of-Towners.  And Murphy's career had hit a similar snag before the late 90s. After a string of huge comedy hits like 48 hours, Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop in the early 80s, Murphy's track record began to sour, with the diminishing returns of Another 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cops 2 and 3, so-so comedies that never made the best of him like Distinguised Gentelman and Boomerang in the early 90s, all culminating in the legendarily terrible Vampire in Brooklyn in 1995. But Murphy had been given another shot of life with Tom Shadyac's The Nutty Professor remake in 1996. It was Bowfinger that really played to the strength of Oz, Martin, and Murphy, allowing Murphy to showcase his wild comic versatility, Martin his sharp comic writing, and Oz his ability to craft a great, quick-paced feature-length comedy. Even though Bowfinger isn't the best-known or best-remembered of any of the their work, it was a critical hit and is beloved by those in the know, including filmmaker and editor Greg MacLennan, who joined the show to talk about his love of this love-letter to scrappy filmmaking.
