This week, we're raising a glass to American Craft Beer Week—because if there's one thing we do best, it's drinking local and talking about it loudly into microphones.Tim's off on a secret beer mission (probably), so Brian calls in reinforcements in the form of Mo Mic Nate— beverage philosopher, and man of many hats (most of them ball caps). The SetupIt's been one of those weeks. Nate's fresh off sweating through a Georgia scorcher with a frosty pint in hand, and Brian's just survived a medieval dental visit where his dentist told him—get this—he has a small mouth. (Cue audience laughter.)But never fear, the mics are hot and the beer is cold.American Craft Beer Week – What's the Big Deal?Craft Beer Week isn't just a clever excuse to drink more (though it helps). Beer and other things for a laid back week.We took a bit of a road trip last weekend to beautiful Cartersville, GA to visit the Savoy Auto Museum. I can't explain the allure of Cartersville to museums, but they have 4 in a town of like 20,000 people. Crazy, right? The Savoy was a fun trip. Lots of classic cars, race cars, and a handful of famous cars from movies - like the Family Truckster from Vacation. Neat. After our museum trip we headed over to Drowned Valley Brewing to try their World Beer Cup medal winning Bartow Brown. Definitely a winner. We also discovered a quirky beer bar with a crazy beer list. All in all our road trip was a successful one.We recap some Cinco de Mayo drinks, make our plans for the upcoming American Craft Beer Week, share some more BrewDog stories, crazy Ballast Point updates, and some science behind the perfect serving temperatures for beer. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Welcome to Lebanon, Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, where you'll find one of Tennessee's newest breweries in an historical town square. Where, after challenges in the changing music industry and the somewhat dull nature of IT work, you'll find a brewer excited about what Cedar City Brewing Company is bringing to the craft beer scene. We have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenomenal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 15-21, 2023. Whether it's ACBW or just any other Wednesday, be sure to celebrate the breweries that you love - no matter the day of the week!Meet Sean Jewett, Head BrewerCedar City is the brewery, but Sean is the artist behind it as its Head Brewer. With a background in music and IT, Sean Jewett comes to brewing with an artistic yet scientific stance. After a shift in the music industry and a lack of excitement and artistry in IT Sean found the perfect fit in brewing beer.Bringing the classics to small town Tennessee, Sean believes beer should be approachable and drinkable for everyone. Not everything has to shift and change and be unique. There's always someone doing that. Sean strives to make classic beers that are great companions for the conversations had while drinking them. That's one of the reasons he switched from IT to beer - the conversations, connections, and community that surrounds it.Classic Beers, Community, Yeast, and MusicJoin us as we chat with Sean about Cedar City, his journey through ever-changing industries and finding his passion in beer. We also chat music, food, and delve a little deep into the world of yeast. There's always something brewing when it comes to conversations centered around beer.Oh, and being so close to Nashville, we can't resist giving you a bit of a rundown on the Craft Brewers Conference that just happened there and Nashville's music and craft beer scene. In the land of Memphis, Tennessee, the beer may not run far and wide, and you'll be hard press to find marshmallow flavored beers. But what you will find are two passionate brewers all about the classics. Located in the burbs of Memphis, Meddlesome Brewing Company brings together community over good, classic beers. After all, what's more meddlesome in the age of throwing everything into a beer, than being classic, instead? We have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenomenal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 15-21, 2023. Whether it's ACBW or just any other Wednesday, be sure to celebrate the breweries that you love - no matter the day of the week!Meet Ben Pugh and Richie EsQuivelEarly on Ben and Richie, now co-founders and owners of Meddlesome Brewing Company, in Memphis, Tennessee, became friends when they first met within their homebrewing community. The two shared recipes and entered into brewing competitions with nothing but passion and community on their side. It was that passion and DIY style of homebrewing that ultimately led them to open Meddlesome.Classic Beers with a Side of ChaosWith inspiration to meddle with the gimmicks and trends of craft brewing, Ben and Richie set out with a goal to give beer drinkers good classic beers. But that's not to say, they don't like to F**k Around and Find Out (which is a name of their pepper beer), because what's more meddlesome than also adding a bit of chaos into the scene. On that note, Meddlesome isn't interested in what everyone else is doing They're interested in making beers for the people that show up for them and making sure everyone around has something to satisfy them. Join us as we chat all the above and more giving you a glimpse into Ben and Richie's world. Their passion for beer, their community, their family, their DIY style, and their down to earth meddling sense of exploration will keep you entertained and informed. Welcome to Knoxville, Tennessee, where the beer flows just as easy as the country music, the whiskey, and the rolling hills. Where Will Rutemeyer finally realized his true calling to become a brewer. Where Balter Beerworks found its roots in classic brews, handcrafted foods, and community gatherings. This is a Will's story as much as it is Balter's story. For without the other, neither would be quite the same. And Knoxville wouldn't be either.Meet Will Rutemeyer from Balter BeerworksGrowing up in Chattanooga, Will's parent's were friends with the owners of Chattanooga Brewing Co. So at a young age, Will was exposed to the art of brewing. Not quite sure yet what path he wanted to follow, off to college young Will went, graduating with degree in hand to land himself in a corporate job hidden amidst the cubicles. Quickly learning that this was not the path he wanted to follow, he began his journey back to brewing. Crossing paths with another that was also looking to get into the brewery business, a new path was forged. One built on well-balanced classic beers to match the lifestyle that so many struggle to create. So while we all may be a bit out of balance when it comes to that ever elusive work/life balance, visiting Balter Beerworks in Knoxville, Tennessee, may just be the weight needed to bring us back to center. At least for that moment that we are enjoying the beers that pair well with the food while gathering with friends.Join us as we chat all the above and attempt to give you, our listeners, a bit of unsolicited advice about how to create a work/life balance that fits your lifestyle. Join Eric, Walt and Dan as they chat through From the Heart: Volume 2 – a special statewide collaboration brew that serves as a fundraising beer to benefit the Ohio Craft Brewers Association. Work life balance - a difficult level to achieve. But those at Level Beer in Portland, Oregon, are well on their way to becoming over achievers. While they may not agree that they have found that sought after work life balance, they have found that balance in their beer, along with a unique take on leveling up. Level may mean equal but it also means fun. Especially when you take "level" and turn it into play. Video game themed beers, I mean. Level up with us as we chat work life balance, beer balance, and the ability to keep it all level until you can figure out that next level. In life or video games, we hope you level up, beer in hand!Meet Shane Watterson from Level BeerA passion for anything that ferments along with a love of beer is a great formula for becoming a brewer. And that is exactly what Shane Watterson became after finding his first job with the Deschutes Brewery team. When you hear Kentucky, you probably think bourbon, but what you really should be thinking about is Kentucky beer...and bourbon. Oh, and you definitely can't forget the Kentucky Derby. And that, my dear beer loving friend, is what Gallant Fox Brewing Company in Louisville, Kentucky, is all about. Kentucky Beer, Kentucky Bourbon, and the Kentucky Derby. Welcome to the fourth episode in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenomenal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22.Meet Roger Huff from Gallant Fox Brewing CoRoger Huff and his business partner, Patrick Workman came together over some serious homebrewing. Combining that with their love of Kentucky, Gallant Fox Brewing Co became a reality in 2020.But they did not want to just sell beer. They wanted to give their visitors a true Kentucky experience. And with Roger's love of Kentucky bourbon and his extensive collection of many bottles, it was quite easy to add a bourbon bar to accompany the brewery. Keeping with the Kentucky proud theme, the name was a given. Not sure how that fits into Kentucky? You'll have to listen to find out more. And not only do we talk about Gallant Fox, and while we do get a little deep into the woods about distribution and expansion, we have some fun with the Kentucky Derby and definitely the bourbon. When in Rome, so the saying goes. So, when in Kentucky we have to talk a bit about the bourbon, and Roger even gives out some tips on what bourbons to buy. Yes, his business is all about brewing beer, and at Gallant Fox, they brew some some damn good ones, but who doesn't love a good bourbon, just as much? Some even more. And think about this - Kentucky bourbon means barrels. Kentucky barrels translate beautifully into Kentucky beer. Roger's passion for what he does is evidenced through a smile you can hear and feel. It's palpable. Grab your favorite beer (or bourbon) and settle in for some good Kentucky conversation.Click here for the full show notes including a few pics, quotes, and more stories.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Welcome to Mikerphone Brewing where music and beer come together seamlessly. Located just outside of Chicago in Elk Grove Village, this brewery crafts all genres of beer alongside all genres of music.Welcome to the second episode in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenomenal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22.Meet Mike Pallen from Mikerphone BrewingStarting out in the music and marketing world, Mike still always had an inkling towards brewing. His dad worked at Miller when Mike was young, and therefore, told him to not do beer, and to go to college instead.Mike listened but still got into home brewing in college and then graduated from that into home brewing out of his basement, ultimately making the jump to his own brewery, Mikerphone.Music and Beer And if brewing had a hold on him, music did even more. Combining his two passions together, music and beer, Mikerphone Brewing just outside of Chicago became real. But not by any traditional means. Well, sorta. He did start home brewing out of his basement. But on the other hand, he also won highly acclaimed awards for his beer before he even had a location. He did finally have a brewing business, but no home for said brewery. This is Mike's story of how he and his wife, Lisa, brought two passions together to create one. When you know you are an entrepreneur and plan on opening a business, and then fall in love with brewing and the community that surrounds it, there's nothing left to do, but open a brewery. And when your partner in life and business is a pilot, and your brewing style is to create small batch brews, again there's nothing left to do, but call said brewery, Pilot Brewing Company.Welcome to the first episode in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenemonal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22.Meet Rachael Hudson, the Pilot Behind the BreweryStarting in the service industry at 19 in a restaurant that served a lot of beers, Rachael quickly learned that she wanted to know more about craft beer and set her professional career in motion doing exactly that. Not only is this her story about rising up through the ranks, eventually opening up her own brewery in North Carolina, but this is also a story about education, community, and innovative practice in a world that needs all of the above.Join us as we chat about the story behind the name, the Cicerone Certification Program (Racheal is an Advanced Cicerone), Pilot's small batch system (Can you guess the name of it?), her love for community brewing, Pilot's Charity of the Month program, malts and ingredients, and much more. Pilot Brewing Company is truly a neighborhood brewery - the kind where everybody knows your name.Oh, and she has a podcast where she and her friend, Jen, "separate their listeners through this crazy world of beer knowledge to help them figure it out." The name? False Bottomed Girls. Do you get the pun? She's got great stories to tell behind the beer, but wait until you hear her response when asked about being a woman in the brewing industry. With a local brew to toast American Craft Beer Week, the boys launch into a redux of last week's HIGHLY controversial Black Superman episode. Downvotes? White supremacists? Bad comic book takes? It's an interesting time, for sure. Then, it's time to a mid-challenge check in as the Brews try to trim down (some doing better than others). Finally, the show rounds out with entertainment controversies from Ellen Degeneres cancelling her show to Conan moving to HBO and Joe Budden flipping the table on his entire podcast. *Beer of the Week* Ravenous Pig Prized Pig Series Higher Love Belgian Strong Ale
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is celebrating American Craft Beer Week with a great group of guests. On the show is Brian Strumke from Stillwater Artisanal in Seattle, WA; Ryan Brower from Gear Patrol in Brooklyn, NY; and Jean Broillet from Tired Hands Brewing Company in Ardmore, PA. To kick things off, Brian introduces his pandemic project: Fast Fashion with Matt Storm (The Masonry Pizza), in Seattle, Washington. Brian and Jean then quickly veer off course, offering a preview into their epic, convertible-style road trip planned across the Pacific Highway. Switching gears, Ryan asks Jean to reflect on the current American beer palette, which Jean feels is in a bit of a recoil period. Brian agrees that everyone is leaning into comforting, obvious flavors right now, but is hopeful that tons of experimentation will soon break-through the cracks. As an example of obscurity, Jean tells everyone the hidden secret in the Tired Hands Milkshake IPA, and explains how he gets away with having a strange recipe but a great-tasting end product. To wrap things up, Brian gives us a preview of an upcoming music project, Jean declares that the new trend in beer isn’t beer, and Jimmy asks the gang what a 21-year-old, new beer drinker should try out this summer.Photo Courtesy of Jean Broillet.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. This week is American Craft Beer Week, which celebrates independent breweries. One of the most unique stories I’ve discovered in this genre is Tennessee Brew Works in Nashville. CEO and President Christian Spears once was a derivative trader on Wall Street with a focus on emerging market government debt, but he wanted to remake his life into something different. While he’d always loved craft beer from his college days bartending, and through the years developed beer knowledge and appreciation while traveling the world, he eventually delved into home brewing and the path became clear. Tennessee Brew Works is Tennessee through and through, from ingredients to labeling, and their commitment to sourcing local yields delicious results in every glass.

We continue to celebrate American Craft Beer Week by taking a look at what makes Michigan craft beer so special - like the state's ability to grow hops. It's not all rosy -- local/state/federal regulations can be a nightmare for craft breweries. It's been a long 14 months for Steve Johnson, owner of Motor City Brew Tours. But just over a week ago, he gave his first tour since the pandemic began last March. As things open up, Steve is offering more opportunities to learn about Detroit's beer history. But, Steve and Zach didn't spend too much time looking back, more time looking ahead.
The name comes from the local Bridger Mountain Range which sits just a few miles north of Bozeman. The community comes from the people that work and live here. The beer comes from Daniel Pollard and his team at Bridger Brewing. The first employee at Bridger Brewing, Daniel is more than that and more than a brewer. He builds bridges with the beer he brews. Bridges to the community both within Bridger Brewing and Bozeman, Montana. With a passion for supporting local organizations and collaborating with other brewers, Daniel works hard at bringing people together over a beer. Daniel is also highly passionate about diversity in the craft beer industry. And not just the work industry but the customer base, as well. He wants to encourage people who weren't traditionally involved in craft brewing to come in, bringing new perspectives, backgrounds, life stories, and skills. So, yes, we talk beer, but we also talk community, diversity, music, and all the things that inspire us to wake up in the morning, grateful for the day ahead. And speaking of beer, you've got to hear what he loves to drink. Sometimes, it's not always about the craft beer, but more about the beer that's crushable. The beer that is a part of every adventure story. We've always said it's about the story more than the beer, and Daniel tells the stories well. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Malteurop Celebrates Craft Breweries During American Craft Beer Week -------------------------------------------------------------------- American Craft Beer Week takes place May 10–16, 2021. You’re about to listen to our Virtual Taproom visit with Jeremy Ragonese, president of Uinta Brewing in Salt Lake City. These brief Virtual Taproom conversations are recorded via Zoom and the video is available now on the Utah Beer News YouTube channel. Jeremy’s voice might sound familiar to you, and not just because he’s been a fixture in the Utah craft beer community for the last five years. He also appeared on Episode 52 of the podcast discussing the Utah Brewers Guild and how Utah’s craft beer community is emerging from the pandemic. This time around, Jeremy is here to talk about his start in craft beer and how his path led him to become president of Uinta Brewing in 2019. We also talk briefly about the impact Uinta Brewing has had on Utah craft beer since its founding in 1993. And with American Craft Beer Week 2021 set for May 10-16, Jeremy describes the importance of supporting local, independent craft breweries — not only this week but all year long. Stay tuned to hear what Uinta has planned for American Craft Beer Week and be sure to visit UtahBeerNews.com to learn what other Utah breweries are doing to celebrate the occasion. That said, if breweries would like their American Craft Beer Week events included on the site, please feel free to send along the details to tim@utahbeernews.com. We recorded our conversation on May 7, 2021, and, as I mentioned, you can catch the full video on our YouTube channel, as well as on our Facebook Page. An abridged version is available on our Instagram TV channel. Thanks to Jeremy for taking the time to talk with Utah Beer News. And thank you for listening. If you enjoy this type of storytelling, I’d really appreciate if you could please leave a review on your podcast platform of choice. Enjoy the episode! Episode 56 | May 10, 2021
Happy American Craft Beer Week! We're going to start things off by going to class. I spoke with Dr. Neil Reid, a professor of Geography and Planning at the University of Toledo. One of Dr. Reid's areas of study is how craft breweries impact communities, which is why people call him the Beer Professor.
We’re back with another visit with Joey Cardaccio, the beer and service manager at Slackwater Pub & Pizzeria in Sandy. Each month we visit with Joey for our Virtual Taproom and 3 Beers with Joey segment that you can watch now on the Utah Beer News YouTube Channel. This month Joey highlights three beers that are worth checking out — two are from neighboring states and one is from Minnesota. The three beers we talk about this month are: Lev Lion Lager (Měšťanský pivovar Havlíčkův Brod) Hofbräu Original Helles (Staatliches Hofbräuhaus München) Weihenstephaner Helles (Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan) Give a listen to learn more about these three beers. Joey also gives us the scoop on events happening at Slackwater in May 2021 — including three tap takeovers happening during American Craft Beer Week. We recorded our conversation on May 3, 2021, and, as I mentioned, you can catch the full video on our YouTube channel, as well as on our Facebook Page. Thanks to Joey for taking the time to talk with Utah Beer News. And thank you for listening. Any craft brewery that has biking as a theme is a craft brewery for us. And Crank Arm Brewing definitely has a thing and a theme for biking. So, let's crank it up this week for some beer and bike love while we chat all about life's trials, tribulations, and rewards! With a mutual love of bikes and beer came a passion project that fit Adam Eckhardt to a tee, Crank Arm Brewing. We were thrilled to be able to talk bikes and beer with Adam, one of the four masterminds behind Crank Arm Brewing in Raleigh, North Carolina. While his story may be similar to some - person loses job, person ponders purpose of life, person loves to brew beer, person opens brewery - his style and passion remain unique to him. When it became apparent that he was going to open a brewery, it was a no-brainer that bikes would be also be involved. Join us this week for some beer love, some bike love, and just all around love for passions that make the world go 'round. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Malteurop Celebrates Craft Breweries During American Craft Beer Week -------------------------------------------------------------------- American Craft Beer Week takes place May 10–16, 2021. We continue our Malteurop podcast series celebrating breweries for American Craft Beer Week. This week, the series takes us to Colorado where we met with Kyle Carbaugh, CEO and Founder of Wiley Roots Brewing Company. Finding a hobby at the encouragement of his wife led to his career as a brewer. Looking to make beer fun again, Kyle and his team at Wiley Roots create beers that are unique and meaningful, all rooted in Greeley, Colorado. Nicknamed Wiley by his aunt when he was a precocious, hot-tempered kid, the name stuck. Years later, transitioning from an accounting career into brewing, Kyle and his wife headed from Denver back to their roots in Greeley, Colorado. Using Kyle's dad's horse barn to create recipes and brew the initial batches may have been where it all started. But, where it will end, nobody knows. Each brew has a story all its own, and each day brings about new adventures, from beer slushies to stone ground mustard. You'll have to listen to make sense out of that statement. We hope you have as much fun listening as we did talking. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Malteurop Celebrates Craft Breweries During American Craft Beer Week -------------------------------------------------------------------- American Craft Beer Week takes place May 10–16, 2021. Multiple rivers flow into Mobile Bay, and as they do so, they slow down, spread out and cross paths with each other, forming a braided river system. David Nelson latched onto that analogy between the rivers and the brewing community, and Braided River Brewing Company in Mobile, Alabama, was born. Combining this philosophy with the outdoor activities popular in Mobile Bay, such as kayaking and canoeing, David leaned fully into that braiding ideal. Welcome to the second in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some amazing craft breweries for the upcoming American Craft Beer Week, May 10-16. Transitioning from being a chemist in North Carolina to a brewer and brewery owner in Alabama, David Nelson has grasped the concept of living life on his terms. This is Braided River's story of inception to conception (during a pandemic, no less), but because breweries require a lot of love, patience and grunt work, this is David's story just as much. We talk brewing, canning, and styles of beer - this is a craft beer podcast - but we also talk life. The hardships of opening a new business. The joy of being on the water. The importance of sustainability. The community that keeps us all together during good and bad times. 2020 has been an interesting year, and David has made it a successful one, a braided journey of community, of living in the moment. A journey of realizing that even in bad times, dreams can happen. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Malteurop Celebrates Craft Breweries During American Craft Beer Week -------------------------------------------------------------------- American Craft Beer Week takes place May 10–16, 2021. Sketchbook Brewing Company was born out of a love for art, community and craft beer. With their first location in Evanston, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, they had big plans of opening a second location in 2020. We all know what happened in 2020. Did they give up? Not a chance! The sketches of a dream still became a reality. And during a pandemic, Sketchbook Brewing grew from one location to two. Welcome to the second in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some amazing craft breweries for the upcoming American Craft Beer Week, May 10-16. Meet Cesar Marron, Managing Partner and Head Brewer at Sketchbook. An avid homebrewer, while working full-time, Cesar is not one to sit still. So, why not open up a brewery? And that he did. Growing up in Brazil and harnessing a work ethic and responsibility from helping at his parents' business when he was a teen, influenced him immensely. He had to figure things out then, and later when he moved to America on his own. That independence has served him well. If he didn't know what to do, he'd learn what to do. Maybe that's why he loves hardware stores and sketchbooks so much. From day one of planning for their 2014 opening to today, Cesar and his team are voracious DIY'ers, artisans and crafters. It's what kept them going during the pandemic and what will keep them going strong afterwards, as well. We've said it again and again, "Beer is about so much more than just beer." We hope this conversation puts a smile on your face like the one on Cesar's above. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Malteurop Celebrates Craft Breweries During American Craft Beer Week -------------------------------------------------------------------- American Craft Beer Week takes place May 10–16, 2021. Wanna go back to school? How about a school with beer? We've got you covered with Schoolhouse Brewing ( https://www.schoolhousebeer.com ) in Marietta, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. And with a tagline - Where Education Meets Recess - how can you go wrong going back to school here? Welcome to the first in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some amazing craft breweries for the upcoming American Craft Beer Week, May 10-16. We're excited for you to join us in the first MMC American Craft Beer Week Conversation with Thomas Monti and Justin Waller, owners and brewers at Schoolhouse Brewing. Yes, we will talk beer, but these two are all about community and education, so the conversations run deep. Both teachers in their previous lives, they now own a brewery and a homebrew shop. They just can't stay away from teaching or brewing. That serves all beer lovers quite nicely. Never brewing the same thing twice, these two are passionate about everything they do. And they do everything. Their website is phenomenal. They're active on social media, and they even have their very own podcast, The Mötley Brewers ( https://www.schoolhousebeer.com/beer-blogs/ ). I warned them about not burning out because we need their beer and their wisdom. Their response? "We're too bright to burn out." Join us for this fun conversation about the joys and trials and tribulations of life while running a brewery. These two will inspire and crack you up. But more importantly, they will remind you that community is everything. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Malteurop Celebrates Craft Breweries During American Craft Beer Week -------------------------------------------------------------------- American Craft Beer Week takes place May 10–16, 2021. Visit our website BeautifulIllusions.org for a complete set of show notes and links to almost everything discussed in this episodeSelected References:2:05 - Treehouse Brewing Company2:30 - The Brewers Association trade group, which represents the majority of American Brewing companies, defines an American craft brewer as a small, independent brewer with an annual production of 6 million barrels or less, which represents roughly 3% of annual American beer production. Although the vast majority produce way less than this, the number was increased from 2 million barrels in 2011 to reflect the growth of the industry. For reference, the Treehouse Brewing Company has the capacity to produce about 150,000 barrels per year at its current facility which opened in 2017, whereas the Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams and one of the largest craft breweries in the US brewed about 5.3 million barrels in 2019. Additionally, an independent brewer is one in which less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer. According to the American Addiction Centers and Alcohol.org, the use of alcohol has been normalized in almost every culture, but it should be noted that alcohol is a toxin, and regular use of the can lead to medical, mental health, and social problems...In the U.S., alcohol is the most commonly used substance of abuse among young people...Individuals ages 12-20 account for 11% of all the alcohol consumed, more than 90% of which is consumed by binge drinking. Current drinking culture can make it difficult for parents and young people to fully understand the severity and potential consequences of alcohol abuse. Teens may drink because of peer pressure, experimentation, stress, or other reasons...this risky behavior can lead to an alcohol use disorder (AUD) and heavy alcohol use in the teenage years can cause lasting cognitive deficits and alter the course of brain development as the brain continues to mature into a person’s early 20’s. Other dangers associated with underage drinking include impaired judgment, which can lead to violent behavior, and drinking and driving, increased risk of carrying out or suffering from physical or sexual assault, injuries, increased risk of later alcohol problems, and death. The CDC estimates that alcohol plays a role in the deaths of 4,358 individuals under age 21 each year on average. These IPAs have a high alcohol content over 7.5% and are typically described as having intense fruit flavors and aromas, a soft body, and smooth mouthfeel. They often have an opaque color with substantial haze and have less perceived bitterness than traditional IPAs but are always massively hop forward. This emphasis on late hopping, especially dry hopping, with hops with tropical fruit qualities lends the specific ‘juicy’ character for which this style is known. The New England IPA has undoubtedly been the hottest trend in craft over the past few years with many small and larger craft brewers trying their hand at some version of a hazy IPA-style beer. In 2018, its first year as a competition category at the Great American Beer Festival, the “Juicy or Hazy Double IPA” style garnered more entries than any other style category - dethroning the American IPA as most entered beer for the first time in 16 years. For more on the New England IPA phenomenon, see “How the Hazy New England IPA Conquered America” (Thrillist, 2018), the “New England IPA” style sheet from Craft Beer, “‘Juicy or Hazy’ Ales Debut in BA Beer Style Guide, Representing New England IPAs” (CraftBeer.com, 2018), “The New England Style IPA is The Anti-IPA” (CraftBeer.com, 2017), “What Are New England IPAs (NEIPAs)?” (Beer Cartel, 2018), and “What the Hell Happened to the West Coast IPA?” (Gear Patrol, 2019) 44:00 - Generally speaking, the west coast IPAs that pioneered the American style highlight the bitterness of hops over everything where east coast IPAs strike a balance between malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Whereas west coast IPAs are dryer and have an aggressive bitterness, an east coast IPA is sweeter on the front end, which fades into bitterness, thanks to the hops. As an offshoot of the east coast style, New England IPAs are distinctly juicy, as in they can sometimes taste like you took a bite into a tropical fruit or citrus with the rind still on. Previous holdouts, who due to the early dominance of the west coast style thought that “craft” and “bitter” were synonymous, as well as newbies to the craft beer scene, have typically found it somewhat easier to get in on the game through the New England IPAs more approachable flavors, which has increased overall interest in craft beer. - For more see “East Coast IPA vs West Coast IPA: What's the Difference?” (Gear Patrol, 2020)49:39 - See “How The Rise Of Craft Beer Is Contributing To The Decline Of The Homebrewing Lifestyle” (Forbes, 2016)49:43 - Counterweight Brewing Company49:45 - DuVig Brewing Company49:49 - In January 1985 there were 100 craft breweries open and operating in the US, including early craft pioneers like Sierra Nevada and the Boston Beer Company, by 1996 the number of craft breweries had grown to 1000, and 50 different categories were recognized and judged at the Great American Beer Festival. The first “American Craft Beer Week” took place in 2006, and in 2014 craft beer production volume saw an 18% increase over the previous year with IPA taking over the overall production lead for the first time. By 2016 there were over 5000 craft breweries operating in the US, by 2019 there were over 8,000. In 2019 craft breweries captured 13.6% of the overall US beer market with sales totaling over $29 billion dollars, up from just slightly over $10 billion in 2011, and Ken Grossman, who founded Sierra Nevada back in 1980, has a net worth of $1 billion dollars. - For more see “Beer History” (Craft Beer), “National Beer Sales & Production Data” (Brewers Association), “Retail dollar sales of craft beer in the United States from 2011 to 2019” (Statista), and the Forbes profile of Ken Grossman53:16 - See “2020 Zymurgy’s Best Beers in America Results” a list compiled by Zymurgy, which is the bi-monthly magazine of the American Homebrewers Association56:42 - See “The History of Beer” (Craft Beer & Brewing), “Who Invented Beer?” (History.com), and the “History of beer” Wikipedia entry57:00 - See “An ancient thirst for beer may have inspired agriculture, Stanford archaeologists say” (Stanford News, 2018), “The History Of Beer And Why Civilization As We Know It May Have Started Because Of It” (All That’s Interesting, 2016)58:49 - See the “Stout” Wikipedia entry and various style sheets from Craft Beer for American Stout, American Imperial Stout, Irish-Style Dry Stout, English-Style Oatmeal Stout, English-Style Sweet Stout (Milk Stout)This episode was recorded remotely via Zoom in December 2020The “Beautiful Illusions Theme” was performed by Darron Vigliotti (guitar) and Joseph Vigliotti (drums), and was written and recorded by Darron Vigliotti

Time to take a step back and celebrate all of the great beers made here in the United States of America. Since the show's inception, we have nearly doubled the number of breweries; so there is A LOT to celebrate.

Jim Quist @ACCTheQ - It's American Craft Beer Week. Excuse enough for you to find out what adventures your friendly, neighborhood craft brewer has in store for your taste buds. But, honestly, do you need an excuse? What goes better together than sports and beer? I spoke with Craftbeer.com's Program Digital Content Editor, Andy Sparhawk to find out what Craft Beer Week is all about. He provided a few reasons why you should expand your drink list. Plus, we share their list of 'Great American Beer Bars' located in the United States of ACC Nation. It's one we should all put on our own personal to-do list. It would be easy for me to say, I've never met a beer I didn't like. The reality is my palate would strongly disagree. Essentially, I like both food and drink that meet a higher standard. It doesn't mean I won't indulge in something as simple as a burger but even the standards for a hamburger can be raised to something special. I can name a few places that specialize in hamburgers that meet that standard and exceed it. Why not enjoy, right? That's where I stand with beer. Specifically, craft beer. I participated in a tasting of several craft beers the other day using judging standards. It was enlightening and a great exercise. To say my fellow participants are great fans of craft beer would be an understatement. They also have discerning tastes. Did we all like everything we tasted? I'll leave that answer in your hands. American Craft Beer American Craft Beer Week is a great opportunity to discover something new, something outside the norm. For a first timer unfamiliar with craft beers and looking for an adventure be sure to visit Craftbeer.com. Take advantage of their 'Find A Brewery' link. Heard This Week's ACC Nation Podcast? Know what you like? Fantastic. Or, you can ask for a recommendation from the bartender. If not, try a flight. Start with the lighter colored samples and work your way to the dark. Indulge in the aroma of each beer. Take a small taste. See where it takes you. If it isn't your thing then move on to the next. Life's meant to be an adventure and that includes beer. In this case you'll find it in craft beer where every day for brewers is a new adventure. Looking For A Brewery? Here's the short list of 'Great American Beer Bars' found in ACC Nation states. Haven't been? It's American Craft Beer Week, what are you waiting on? Welcome to The Hump! Podcast .... In episode 9 of The Hump! Podcast: Won't You Be My Geeky Neighbor .... hosts Brent Bowen and Chad Beland get geeking with geek blogger Angie Pedersen of KC Geeks. Our guest, Angie, is Kansas City's – if not the Midwest's – premiere geek reporter. She shares all manner of geekiness on her blog … KC Geeks. Angie is a Kansas City native and founded KC Geeks in 2015 because she wanted there to be a one-stop-shop for Kansas City geek resources. Local meetup groups and clubs do a great job in their niche, but Angie has made her mission to showcase all “flavors” of geekiness. She is also a former contributor to GeekCrafts, and the author of four books, including The Star Trek Craft Book. This Kansas City Geek definitely encourages people to embrace every geeky part of themselves. So ... buckle in for the guys geeking with Angie Pedersen and enter the geek side of life. The Hump! But before sharing a pint with Angie Pedersen of KC Geeks, the fellas ... Start geeking over one of Brent's favorite breweries — Kansas City's Crane Brewing Co. Their beer of the week is Crane Brewing Co. Coconut Milkshake New England IPA. They provide their Toasts of The Week ... A final toast to Chad's daughter for graduating high school and for now being a Kansas State Wildcat. (Brent reluctantly agrees to this toast). How Brent has managed to keep his four pounds lost off despite it being American Craft Beer Week and him drinking a lot of beer. And chat about what they've got going on: How were the graduation festivities? And how many parties DID Chad hit? When will they see Deadpool 2 ... the electric boogaloo? And does Deadpool 2 live up to the hype? The final KC Brewery Tour (Tap Tour) round is upon them but it has to wait until the next weekend. The guys have the north loop left KC Tap Tour Season 2 "catch-up" consumption plan. That is comprised of Big Rip, Calibration, Cinderblock and Colony. (Sadly. Season or Session 2 is now over) When it comes to geek gear ... why decide between beer and geek clothing ... when you can have both in one T-shirt? Brent starts geeking over the Game of Thrones, Baratheon Stout T-shirt Chad game him several years ago. Brent's supposed to go watch the Royals vs. Yankees, but the Kansas City Royals are so bad is the Craft & Draft enough of a draw to still go. This Week's Topic — Geeking ... With Angie Pedersen, KC Geeks Credit: KC Geeks. In the interview, the fellas and Angie Pedersen: Kick it off by discussing how mixing alcohol and muscle relaxants are a bad idea Chat about Angie's KC Geeks blog, why she started it and the resources she provides (there's NO RIGHT WAY on how to geek, i.e. we discuss her multiple flavors theory) How KC Geeks covers not only traditional geekiness (e.g. pop culture) … but also other topics worthy of addressing when talking about geek culture. Namely, they chat the podcast features and mental health resources Angie includes on her site.
