March 11, 2023 ~ Avalon Breads CEO Jackie Victor talks about her company's move after 25 years from their Willis Street location to their new home on Canfield, which is in partnership with the Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria & Brewery. Jackie says all your Avalon favorites are there, with several new offerings that came from their recently-developed Jolly Pumpkin partnership.
We're going sour this episode. Martin found a new lambic from Belgium that he couldn't wait to try. Kestmont Groene Kruisbes is a gooseberry lambic. It's a sweet and sour experience. It's always exciting to try a new lambic maker. Stefan was looking through the webshops and saw a Jolly Pumpkin that he's always wanted to try. Bam Biere is a classic Jolly Pumpkin beer. They started releasing their beers in cans instead of bottles and that's dropping the price a bit. This farmhouse saison is a great introduction to saisons. Light, hoppy with just a hint of barnyard funk, this is a great gateway beer to the amzing world of saisons. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #lambic #saison #farmhouseale
Things have been super busy with a bunch of projects, so I caught up with Devon O'Reilly in his office high atop downtown Detroit. Longtime U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is retiring. Who's next? What's next? It's a question to explore form multiple angles. Devon adds his two cents. Programming note - yes, we plan on having Steve Friess on the show as well. I got the assignment. Avalon International Bakery is closing their flagship store and moving into Jolly Pumpkin around the corner. Though it's not bad for the business, it does bring up memories. And, the reason I had to catch Devon at his office for a few minutes is he's planning the Detroit Policy Conference on Tuesday. He gives a preview of what's happening - and of course, Daily Detroit will have a mobile podcast setup there. Detroit Policy Conference: https://www.detroitchamber.com/detroit-policy-conference/

Shawn Johnson of Birds Fly South (https://bfsbeer.com) dreams about brewing. In fact, their solera system for fermenting farmhouse beers came to him one night in a vision of sorts—as Jolly Pumpkin’s Ron Jeffries appeared in a dream with a command to “keep the beer moving.” Funk is always on Johnson’s mind, awake or asleep, and five years in, the brewery continues to adhere to their mantra of “Funk First!” In this episode, Johnson discusses: - Developing and managing their house culture - Maintaining the balance between Brett and Sacch expression in the culture - How different grist bills and mash processes affect the expression of the culture - Pushing higher bitterness (25-35 IBUs) in mixed-culture beers - Using hyped hops in farmhouse beers as a bridge to today’s drinkers - Embracing a bit of lightstruck character by using green bottles - Brewing for different barrel-aging strategies - Exploring flavors in barrel-aged stouts with Belgian yeasts Brewing today means balancing one’s creative vision with consumer demand, educating drinkers, and creating a market rather than simply creating products for an existing one. Birds Fly South has stuck to their guns, building a bridge between classic expression and modern innovation. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Nearly 2,000 breweries across the US, Canada & Mexico partner with G&D Chillers. Keeping it local we also discussed our favorite and least favorite Miami holiday traditions.Starting off the show we played a holiday version of “Would You Rather?” Plus, we got to try some great beer from Jolly Pumpkin, Avery, He’Brew and a local favorite Funky Buddha. You know, we spend a lot of time in the city. but more and more - mostly by popular demand - we’re venturing into the suburbs. It’s a running gag among my friends that once I cross 8 Mile or west of Wyoming or Telegraph, that I start to turn to dust and blow away into thin air. But this simply isn’t the case. Today, the show ventures to the west downtown of Dearborn. The Longboard by Jolly Pumpkin is on Michigan Avenue is a new entrant to the Metro Detroit cuisine game, and they have an interesting spin on the Jolly Pumpkin favorites as well as new dishes and drinks to befit a very Hawaiian theme. 10-8-19 We're talking tonight with Adam Crockett, owner of Haymaker Meadery. Before starting Haymaker in 2015, Adam worked in the barrel industry for 4 years selling barrels to breweries, wineries, and meaderies all over the US and Canada. He has worked with large breweries like Allagash and Jolly Pumpkin and small local breweries in every corner. He has worked directly with distilleries and wineries to provide the best barrels available. He has helped many breweries build up their barrel program and has helped a number of breweries win GABF medals because of his barrel knowledge. He hopes to share his knowledge that he has collected and help meaderies and meadmakers take the step into barrel aging meads. Haymaker does a number of barrel aged meads. In this talk we will cover barrel aging mead, he will talk about barrels, oak alternatives, preparing barrels for homebrewers and what to expect from certain barrels. Adam has also been working with 'Pét Nat' meadmaking. 'Pét Nat' is short for Pétillant Naturel. Pét-Nat is produced in the méthode ancestral, otherwise known as “rurale,” “artisanale,” or “gaillacoise.” Long story short, the wine is bottled prior to fully completing its first fermentation, allowing carbon dioxide to be produced by the natural sugars found in the grapes. The méthode ancestrale was originally used in Limoux in the south of France in the early 16th century by winemaking monks. This production method is contrary to the méthode champenoise, the way in which Champagne is produced, where the base wine is fully fermented, then undergoes a secondary fermentation in bottle with the addition of yeast and sugar (otherwise known as liqueur de tirage.) Unlike Champagne, Pét-Nat is not disgorged, and may or may not be filtered on completion of fermentation. Adam will be telling us about his efforts with Pét Nat, and how it's working for mead. The popularity of the Bayshore Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K in Traverse City is undeniable. The event attracts thousands of runners, along with their families and friends, from all across the state and the U.S. to northern Michigan each Memorial Day weekend. And the race distances sell out -- the half marathon in particular is a sought-after race, filling up not long after race registration opens Dec. 1. This year, the annual kick-off-to-summer race tradition features an all-new event: the Munson Healthcare Kids Marathon, a fun run that gets kids moving not only on race day (they run 1.2 miles at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 25), but in the days leading up to race day as well. Adding a kids event was a long-held dream of TC Track Club members, and Lisa talks about what it means to see this come to fruition. So far, more than 300 kids have signed up for the run -- there's still time to get registered (kids get race bling at the finish line!). More details here. The Traverse City Track Club, northern Michigan’s largest and oldest running club, organizes the Bayshore Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K. Lisa Taylor, the club's executive director and a past guest on the MRG Show, talks about what runners can expect at this year's races. Also new this year is an expanded packet pickup. The Playmakers Runners Expo/Packet Pickup takes place at the Traverse City Central High School Gym from 5 to 9 p.m on Friday night May 24 and Saturday, race day, from 5 to 7:15 a.m. ********************************************************Are you running Bayshore this Memorial Day weekend? MRG will be there! Heather is running the 10K this year, along with Joe, Andrew and Alex, while Emma is taking on the half marathon. AND...If you’ve signed up for the marathon, half marathon or 10K, be sure to stop by the Michigan Runner Girl booth at the all-new Runner’s Expo. We'd love to meet up with fellow Michigan Runner Girls & Guys and hear your stories! Stop by, share your race excitement, tell us about your running plans, and check out the latest MRG styles (We'll also have tanks and hoodies and also the popular Run Traverse City poster for sale!) It’s also an awesome opportunity to have a great time connecting with fellow runners and outdoor enthusiasts. See you there! ******************************************************* Also on this week's show: a preview of an all-new 5K on Old Mission Peninsula later this month. The Jolly Pumpkin 5K and One Mile takes place Sunday, May 19. This 5K starts at the lighthouse at the tip of Old Mission and features views of Grand Traverse Bay and cherry orchards. A post-race party takes place at Jolly Pumpkin restaurant. A special race discount code for this race is shared during the episode. Learn more about the race and get registered here: http://jollypumpkinrun.com/registration-traverse-city-mi/

This week's featured artist is Detroit based artist Adam Forman. We learned of Adam through the work that he does with Jolly Pumpkin. His story is an interesting and positive one. We were able to look at his path and see how through the encouragement of a teacher he took a leap of faith into art and has been enjoying that decision ever since. Our discussion is upbeat with some sprinkled in laughs and storytelling. Enjoy.
2-27-18 Tonight we're mixing it up a bit, with a regular guest, and an AMMA Mead Conference Speaker. Julie Lawson and Kristen England will be here with the BJCP, and Adam Crockett, owner of Haymaker Meadery, talking about mead and oak. Kristen is a medical doctor. And spent some time overseas pursuing his studies, where he discovered awesome beer. Upon returning to the U.S., England began homebrewing. He passionately pursued his hobby even as he attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota. “I got into homebrewing big time,” he says. “I brewed thousands of batches of beer. Every day, even after work, I was brewing beer, no matter what.” In addition to brewing, he continued researching his new craft. He’d drive or fly all over just to taste different beer and get as much information as he could. “People love throwing the word ‘passion’ around, but they don’t understand what it means,” he says. “It’s doing as much as you possibly can when you’re not on the clock to do it. I’ve always been someone who wants to learn as much as he can about everything.” In his pursuit to know more, England attended a class to become a beer judge through the Beer Judging Certification Program. He was underwhelmed by the experience and particularly frustrated that there were no educational guidelines for instructors. Not one to sit on the sidelines, he took action. “I used to write grants all the time for grad school, so I wrote up a 20-page thing and submitted it,” he says. “I didn’t ask permission, I just thought, ‘We need this. I will do it.’” That’s how his eight-year tenure as the BJCP’s educational director started. From 2004 to 2012, he built the BJCP educational program with the help of two assistants, became a Grand Master Judge, taught classes, and helped rewrite the BJCP style guidelines. He is now the Education and Training Liaison for the BJCP. Julie has been making beer, wine, mead and cider since 2008. Like many others, she started Home brewing after receiving a department store home brew kit (which was never actually used). She joined a local club but still wanted to learn so much more about the whole process, so when classes for the Beer Judge Certification Program were being offered she attended, took the exam and have been a judge since January 2009. In 2013 she completed a Mead training course and took/passed the exam She currently is National Ranked BJCP with a Mead Endorsement. She's very interested in the education aspect home brewing and judging. Not everyone has have local clubs or seasoned brewers they can reach out to for assist or questions. She would like to see more reliable source of education that is easily accessible to learners at all levels. She has assisted with BJCP and Mead Judging classes in Milwaukee and am currently facilitating a 7 part series in Oshkosh, WI. And Julie is member of the BJCP staff serving as Assistant Education Director under the Education and Training Directorate. Julie lives in Fond du Lac Wisconsin and her primary club is Milwaukee Beer Barons. Our second guest tonight is Adam Crockett, owner of Haymaker Meadery. Adam has been working in the barrel industry for the last 4 years selling barrels to breweries, wineries, and meaderies all over the US and Canada. He hopes to share his knowledge that he has collected and help meaderies take the step into barrel aging meads. He also owns Haymaker Meadery who does a number of barrel aged meads. In this talk we will cover barrels, barrel alternatives, and care for your vessels. Get your AMMA tickets at amma.brownpapertickets.com
As the growth of craft beer and its various offshoots continues to find its niche in smaller and smaller cities and towns, a remarkable thing is happening. Some of the most obscure styles of brewing are making their homes far from the urban centers where most of the drinkers they tend to attract actually live. Breweries like Jester King and Hill Farmstead have long embodied this anomaly. And increasingly, there’s a new gelatin of sorts that’s had experience working in these sought-after breweries who are venturing out on their own, a bit like settlers, as they return to a place they call home and set up shop. They’re not met with instant success very often—even as they take on the challenges of making beers inspired by the Lambic, Gueuze, and wild traditions, they’re also met with the challenge of finding their audience in these smaller, out-of-the-way markets. Speciation Artisan Ales is one of the newest of these in the midwest. After an immersive education experience brewing for Black Project in Denver, Mitch Ermatinger and his wife Whitney decided to return home to the Grand Rapids area of Michigan, find some cheap industrial space, and start making wild ales of their own. Having learned a good deal of the brewing, aging, and blending side of things, they had to learn how to run a business, create a selling strategy, and start attracting an audience for a region of the country that simply doesn’t have much exposure to these kinds of beers—not to mention the way in which they were going to be sold. Even with a brewery like Jolly Pumpkin in his backyard, and being named Beer City USA, this was still a novel idea in 2018 Michigan beer. Listen in as we talk through how it came to fruition.

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, we’ll chat about some of the best Spring craft beers brewing out there to into your home brewery! We’d like to welcome to the show Iain Kyle (Jolly Pumpkin Event Coordinator), Daniel Ohly (JP Brand Manager), Brian Strumke (Stillwater Artisanal), Stephen Valand (Brooklyn Brew Shop), and Erica Shea.
On this episode of Slurred Words we sit down with Jeff Lampley of Wandering Friar Beer and nerd out over beer and nerd culture. Jeff recently started Wandering Friar as a Gypsy brewer looking to sharpen is recipes and brewing skills while collaborating with some of the best MI brewers in the game. Before starting Wandering Friar, Jeff has been a home brewer for about five years before working at Jolly Pumpkin and Brew Detroit. I met up with Jeff for a couple beers at a local favorite of mine, Woodward Avenue Brewery (The WAB). When I first arrived we ran into Chris Coburn, The WAB's head brewer who you can listen to on Episode 58. Jeff and I talked about what it means to be a Gypsy brewer and his goals for the future of Wandering Friar. I had an excellent time talk with Jeff about Beer and star wars too. Keep your eye out for Jeff and Wandering Friar as he continues to collaborate with breweries around the state.
The tables were turned a bit on this one as the Pigs spent some time in the hot seat and got a couple of their freshest home brews evaluated by EZ Eric Fox & Dr. Hopenstein himself, Sean Hopenstein Manahan of Flat12 Bierwerks. Some time back, Sean stepped out of the shadow of his pop, aka. Atticus Finch, and decided to leave law school and brew beer. And let me tell you, there are a lot of happy people he decided to do just that. He is brewing some marvelous beer helping to put Flat12 on the Beer Map. Lots of great brewing talk and tips in this episode as Sean and EZ give us some pointers on sharpening our brew skills as we enjoyed a few beers and laughs before they finally threw us out the door. And it's not every day we get to pass around a Ch'ti Blonde. . . so we had that going for us. Looking forward to getting back to chat with these gents again and do a little Pig/Flat12 collaboration in the near future. Tune in to this week's episode and then make your way to Flat12 Bierwerks Indianapolis to enjoy the cool, laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. Lots of shout outs in this one, such as Central State Brewing, Jolly Pumpkin, and as so many times before, one of our favorite little gems in TN, BriarScratch Brewing http://flat12.me/

We can't tell, but Matt and Eric might be slowly losing their minds on this show. And the "I'll Drink to That" gets as sappy as one can handle. Cheers!
A pleasure this week to sit with Nick Yoder of Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan during their 4th Anniversary Party. Cowboy and Dougy Fresh could not have been more giddy on this trip. Spent the day before preparing by hitting some fine breweries in Michigan (one of Dougie's favorite, Right Brain Brewery, Jolly Pumpkin, Clam Lake Brewery, Greenbush Brewery). But we could not have had a better time on Saturday at Journeyman for the celebration. Still hard to believe they have only been around for four years and have such amazing spirits. A Journey here will not soon be forgotten. A beautiful old buggy whip factory, originally built by a staunch prohibitionist, EK Warren, set on a historic location with something to offer for every whiskey lover. We were able to enjoy some great live music from Brett Wiscons before sitting down with Nick to talk shop and share a glass of Last Feather Rye. Some special shout outs to our buddy Warren Kluck of Jason Lee and Kluck in the Morning Show, who was enjoying some great food and mixed drinks downstairs with the rest of our clan (Ryan Douglas, Jerry Huener, Jacilynn Ferris), as well as 18th Street Brewery and Central State Brewing in Indianapolis. Enjoy this week's show and then get yourself a bottle or three of their tasty spirits, and do yourself a favor and get to Three Oaks to see this amazing place.
Paul and Matt happen to bring brews from the same brewery on this episode! Paul also happens to bring up the awesome phenomenon of Cleveland Beer Week!
In this week’s episode, I’ve got info on a Taxman Brewing tap takeover, Upland Brewing gives you a chance to taste both versions of their collaboration with Jolly Pumpkin, plus several things to do with your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. Season 1, Episode 11 - Newport Beach Brewing Company brewmaster, Derek Bougie, joins us for a mouthwatering pucker-fest, featuring two great brews from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, and three sour homebrews from Derek himself. This week on Four Brewers, our friend and special guest, Derek Bougie is bringing his beer geek “A” game as well as his unique style of ball-busting. We start off with two great beers from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, out of Dexter, Michigan. The first beer is a collaboration with Maui Brewing Company called “Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole” (which means “superhuman” and “without limits”), a wild ale made with cherries and liliko’i fruits. Jolly Pumpkin, Maui Brewing, and Anchorage Brewing Collaborations The second beer is another collaboration ale, but this time between Jolly Pumpkin andAnchorage Brewing Co. called “Calabaza Boreal“, a saison style ale made with grapefruit peel, grapefruit juice and peppercorns. It almost comes off sort of like an IPA with it’s grapefruit character, and is an interesting and overall excellent brew. Feature: Homebrew – Derek Bougie’s Sours. Derek was kind enough to share three sour homebrews which were aged in a six gallon, medium-toast American Oak barrel. The first brew, named “La Vahine“, was originally and ale that was somewhere in the realm of a brown ale and a dubbel. It clocks in around 7%, and is at this point, a little under four years old. Beer number two is an 8.75% golden sour ale, appropriately named “Golden Sour“, bottled in August of 2009. We don’t really dwell on this brew a lot, as the show kind of goes off the rails while we discuss rap-rock, conservatives, and the Detroit music scene. Yeah…we apologize in advance. Derek Bougie’s Homebrewed Sours The final beer from Mr. Bougie is a 8.75% sour ale, aged in the same barrel as the previous two brews. This brew, “Funky Nuts“, was bottled six years ago, and was “Best in Show” winner at the 2008 Orange County Fair. Big thanks go out to Derek for sharing his tasty homebrew with us. If you’re ever in the Newport Beach area, make a stop at Newport Beach Brewing Co., and give Derek a high-five. Buy some beer and food while you’re there, too—it’s a great spot! A homebrewer and Limoncello enthusiast was going to join us in studio, but things don’t always go as planned. Steph educated us about this lemony Italian liqueur in Know Your Beers, or Know Your… Booze? We tasted Limoncello from Campania, Italy in frozen shot glasses. But fear not, we had beer, too. We tasted beers from ShawneeCraft (future Beer Busters recording location) and Jolly Pumpkin (one brewed exclusively for the Rare Beer Club). We also indulged in the latest in the line of Game of Thrones beers from Brewery Ommegang. Wayne put more weird in our beer during Happy Fun Time Games, and Dan talked sports and beer… and traffic and weather…

00:00:00 - Jason Head joins us to talk about Titanoboa, the largest snake ever found and subject a new documentary starring Dr. Head himself. Part 1 tackles the initial discovery and piecing together of the biology of the snake. We actually recommend watching the documentary (or play the game) first, but you're a smart person, you'll figure it out regardless. 00:27:29 - Some snakes function better in the water, some scientists podcast better with a drink. Charlie tries his hand at cider, Patrick calls back to an old-faithful Pinot Noir, and Ryan compliments his recently acquired Biere De Mars from Jolly Pumpkin. 00:31:28 - Trailer Trash Talk tangents into board game territory, i.e. anything to avoid talking about how bad Battleship looks. 00:43:50 - Part 2 of our interview with Dr. Jason Head finishes the story of The Infamous Biting of John Bloch, as well as discussing the paleoecological significance of this awesome find. We also ask about the process of having a documentary made about your work. All in all, a good time is had. 01:02:10 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like fossil snakes, easily lost to the rigors of time. Charlie has an iTunes review from an underaged fluffyraptor decrying his lack of ability to donate. We come up with an alternate, more collegiate use for the money. Speaking of money, Eric C. decides to set up a recurring donation, and Patrick is quick with the praise. And finally, Ryan has a question from Kyle H. concerning which scientific topic the guys would most like to see animated. Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts! Music for this week's show provided by: Crawling Snake King - The Doors Johnny Appleseed - Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros The Battle of Who Could Care Less - Ben Folds Five So Long - Guster
00:00:00 - Will having a few drinks prevent you from getting malaria, or make it more likely in the first place? The Paleopals discuss the pros and cons of boozing it up near infected mosquitoes. 00:20:26 - Fortunately the Paleopals live outside the range of malaria, thus their drinks are relatively risk free. Patrick expects condemnation from Ryan for his Kona but Ryan is too busy spilling La Roja from Jolly Pumpkin all over himself. Kelly shows up with another custom cocktail from Zach, this time called The Honey Rumple (milk, honey, rum; mix to taste). 00:26:34 - Johnny Depp has also developed a taste for rum as he returns to the world of Hunter S. Thompson in the trailer for The Rum Diary, as discussed in this week's installment of Trailer Trash Talk! 00:39:27 - Even though the females are bringing the parasites the males are bringing the sperm to the next generation of the little buggers. But a new study has successfully eliminated the sperm without eliminating the male's sex appeal. Cool? Yes. Labor intensive? Also yes. That's why Kelly prefers the laser system that blasts female mosquitoes out of the sky! PEW PEW! 00:52:02 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like mosquitoes, they can really get under your skin if you let them. Ryan tries to clear up some Costa Rican iguana confusion from Randall H. Ryan knew them only as ctenosaurs ("comb-lizard"), which is probably a cooler name anyways. Patrick has an iTunes review from Hanna S. who thinks we're "great for an average science nerd." Hey! Who is she calling average?! And finally, Kelly deals with a pronunciation pet peeve brought to her by Avi M. Dear Avi, we promise to do better, try harder, speak more correcter, etc. starting tomorrow... probably. Thanks for listening! Paleocave.com is our blog, it's probably what you should read until we put out another show next week. Music from this week's show: Mosquito Song - Queens of the Stone Age Honey - The Hush Sound In this Diary - The Ataris I Just Had Sex - The Lonely Island
Homebrewing beer. The CYBI crew is once again put to the test with another Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales challenge on The Brewing Network. This time the crew is asked to homebrew Madrugada Obscure (Dark Dawn). This complex craft beer is a Belgian-inspired stout that is dark, roasty and one of the most unique beers on earth. Once again CYBI enlists sour expert Mike Mraz to tackle the challenge. Can he brew it?
Homebrewing beer. Some craft beers are difficult to reproduce. Others are near impossible. Reproducing anything that comes out of Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales is like winning the lottery! But the CYBI crew never backs down from a homebrewing challenge. Tune in and see if guest brewer Mike Mraz can clone Bam Biere from Jolly Pumpkin and complete the impossible!
Pumpkin You’re kidding right? Drinking a beer made with parts of pumpkin? Serious? Yessir. This time of year is when the pumpkin beers appear. And as weird as you might think that is the beer is actually pretty good. Okay, we admit that pumpkin isn’t something that we’re going to seek out. It’s not going to become our go to beer any time soon. But it is an interesting thing to take to the football or costume party. While you might only have one you’ll be a braver person because of it.
