So, what's the real story of Richard Brumfield? Even today, it's a remarkably unsatisfying account. There's plenty of evidence that Brumfield committed the murder — but there's also a bunch of evidence that makes no sense at all in that context. Why would a murderer mail a box of sexy panties to the exact place he planned to run away to, the day before an apparently premeditated crime? Was “Mrs. Norman Whitney” a real person, and if so, who was she? Did Brumfield have a second family in Calgary? Then, too, why would a man who's contemplating a murder like this use such a small amount of dynamite? Why would he stage the entire pageant on Pacific Highway, the most heavily traveled road in the area? Was there a second man involved in the plot, as the district attorney broadly hinted to reporters? Why was his wife so doggedly insistent that the burned corpse was that of her husband, when it was so obvious to everyone else that it was not? Was she in on it? And those suicide attempts: How many people, crazy or not, can cut two inches into their own throats with a dull instrument? How many can hang themselves from a bunk bed without help? If he had help, who could have provided it? It's possible that all these anomalies can be explained by Brumfield simply being an unhinged homicidal maniac, and yeah, maybe that's all there was to it. But looking back over the record at all the loose ends hanging off this messy little murder mystery, a person sure has to wonder. Picture by Raz This upcoming Friday there will the musical equinox again - when the mainstream and the underground will sharpen their ears and both listen to the new record by Dead Cross! Believe us - it's a really charming version of LIGHTNING in an exploding bottle! Therefore we are happy to give you some background information on the record through this interview with guitar maniac Michael Crain! Crain, as the other band members call him, has gone through some serious stuff in the last few years and that seemingly incited his playing leading to even more furious spins and riffs, licks and shreds. II will once again be “classic” California Old-School Hardcore with loads of parts remindung us off bands like the Dead Kennedys. Michael tells us about the creation of the songs, who does what and joins when along in the process and he doesn't spend much time on the Pacific Highway even though one might assume him to do. This interview was a hell of a lot of fun to do and we hope that comes across for all of you!

Last weekend, a number of camera crews covering the Pacific Highway border crossing protest, south of Vancouver, were swarmed, jostled, yelled at and spit on - one of many such incidents that's happened across the country over the last few weeks that is changing the way journalists are doing their jobs in an effort to "blend in" where possible. In Metro Vancouver, ongoing protests have also been coming to the media outlets themselves, with rotating "Media is the Virus" rallies held outside CTV, Global, CBC and Citytv. On this episode of Broadcast Dialogue - The Podcast, we welcome CTV Vancouver news director Ethan Faber, to talk about the realities of what it's like to be a beat reporter right now, how we got here, and the struggle to return to civilized discourse. Today I have brought in what I think more than a few of us need… a north coast road trip for the mind featuring lovable heroes and easy to hate villains. I can't promise life will always be this straightforward, but indulge with me in the world of The Banksia House Breakout and enjoy a few days in the sun.The Banksia House Breakout is the debut novel for James Roxburgh. James is an audiologist specialising in the care of the elderly and has used his caring eye to create some compelling characters that challenge our stereotypes of aging. The Banksia House Breakout opens with a quintessentially Sydney scene. An auctioneer slams the gavel on another million dollar sale.Immediately the reader gets the impression that something is amiss. The owner of the bungalow in Ryde is not happy. Ruth has sold her home on the advice of her son Michael. Since the death of her husband, Michael has felt that Ruth is struggling to manage. He's arranged a room for her at Banksia House and the family home and all its contents have to go.From its cover The Banksia House Breakout looks a twee, feel good romp but I can tell you that it's opening chapters are dark. And while they are redeemed by some genuine feel good moments, it's clear that James Roxburgh wants to understand something about the ways that older Australians are treated, or perhaps more aptly, how they are too often relegated into a kind of waiting room to the lives of their significant others. On arriving in Bankia House Ruth makes friends but also enemies. Discovering a clique of ladies in the breakfast room they quickly warn her of Glenn, a nurse whom all the residents fear.Ruth wakes the next morning to Glenn rifling through her things searching for loot. Glenn's threats are quickly followed by the news that Ruth's best friend is dying in Brisbane. And so hatches a plan; Ruth and her new friend Beryl must steal a car and get to Brisbane, via Coffs to scatter Beryl's husband's ashes, for Ruth to see her friend one more time.I started The Banksia House Breakout kinda hating it. I was getting so angry at Ruth's son Michaal for his indifferent treatment of his mother, Glenn is just hideous and I wondered how on earth anything positive could emerge as we were being shown so effectively that these people simply had no agency in their lives. And it was just as I was ranting again about these characters that I realised I had developed a connection to the world of the novel and the anger I was feeling was because I knew that these were real situations that some older Australians faced.I don't know about you but I don't often start yelling about books. Back when I was able to sit in at cafes or catch a train, I knew a book got me when I had to put it down and wipe away a tear. Well now my cats can assure you The Banksia House Breakout is the real deal because it will have you responding, like it or not.I'm not going to tell you more about Ruth and Beryl's escape. Suffice to say that it's eventful. This book hits all the right notes for a rollicking tale. You'll probably see a few of the twists coming but that doesn't mean they're not still satisfying. And as you following the septuagenarians on their adventures watch the reactions and the stereotypes that are invoked. Sure plenty of old men are probably working hard to destroy the world but others are trying to continue incredible lives of value and respect, and constantly being underestimated will only lead to them stealing our cars and joining up with bikies on the Pacific Highway.James Roxburgh's The Banksia House Breakout is out now and if you want to discover more James will be joining me on FInal Draft in the coming weeks. This week on the show I have a terrific debut YA from Tobias Madden, Anything But Fine
Vaporwave is an art aesthetic that embodies the anxiety, disillusionment, and nihilism of the modern world. In music form, vaporwave dives deep into these unconscious anxieties, manifesting sounds from past decades - warping them, manipulating them, and summoning the ghost of the good times that were promised by modern capitalism, but never came.Vaporwave is an expression of the pains of the collective modern unconscious, taking the form of heroin-level escapism, ecstasy-inducing pop music, or dystopian ambient worlds.Because of its internet-based nature, its aesthetics have evolved so rapidly, further reflecting the chaotic subconscious of the modern mind.Vaporwave captures the modern unconscious of humans raised by the internet succinctly and understanding this art form matters. In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up the genre and give our thoughts, analysis, emotions, and commentary on them. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is celebrating American Craft Beer Week with a great group of guests. On the show is Brian Strumke from Stillwater Artisanal in Seattle, WA; Ryan Brower from Gear Patrol in Brooklyn, NY; and Jean Broillet from Tired Hands Brewing Company in Ardmore, PA. To kick things off, Brian introduces his pandemic project: Fast Fashion with Matt Storm (The Masonry Pizza), in Seattle, Washington. Brian and Jean then quickly veer off course, offering a preview into their epic, convertible-style road trip planned across the Pacific Highway. Switching gears, Ryan asks Jean to reflect on the current American beer palette, which Jean feels is in a bit of a recoil period. Brian agrees that everyone is leaning into comforting, obvious flavors right now, but is hopeful that tons of experimentation will soon break-through the cracks. As an example of obscurity, Jean tells everyone the hidden secret in the Tired Hands Milkshake IPA, and explains how he gets away with having a strange recipe but a great-tasting end product. To wrap things up, Brian gives us a preview of an upcoming music project, Jean declares that the new trend in beer isn’t beer, and Jimmy asks the gang what a 21-year-old, new beer drinker should try out this summer.Photo Courtesy of Jean Broillet.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. A deep red modern span stretches over Pacific Highway on the bridge that links Tacoma to Fife, carrying a steady stream of cars and trucks over the Puyallup River. The bridge and an older portion of it nearby were recently renamed by the City of Tacoma in collaboration with the Puyallup Tribe. It’s now called the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge and in Twulshootseed, yabuk’wali , meaning “place of a fight.” Fifty years ago today, members of the Puyallup Tribe faced off here with local law enforcement.
So, what's the real story of Richard Brumfield? Even today, it’s a remarkably unsatisfying account. There’s plenty of evidence that Brumfield committed the murder — but there’s also a bunch of evidence that makes no sense at all in that context. Why would a murderer mail a box of sexy panties to the exact place he planned to run away to, the day before an apparently premeditated crime? Was “Mrs. Norman Whitney” a real person, and if so, who was she? Did Brumfield have a second family in Calgary? Then, too, why would a man who’s contemplating a murder like this use such a small amount of dynamite? Why would he stage the entire pageant on Pacific Highway, the most heavily traveled road in the area? Was there a second man involved in the plot, as the district attorney broadly hinted to reporters? Why was his wife so doggedly insistent that the burned corpse was that of her husband, when it was so obvious to everyone else that it was not? Was she in on it? And those suicide attempts: How many people, crazy or not, can cut two inches into their own throats with a dull instrument? How many can hang themselves from a bunk bed without help? If he had help, who could have provided it? It’s possible that all these anomalies can be explained by Brumfield simply being an unhinged homicidal maniac, and yeah, maybe that’s all there was to it. But looking back over the record at all the loose ends hanging off this messy little murder mystery, a person sure has to wonder.... Thursday, September 26, 2019 Memo reveals US President Trump prodded Ukraine to investigate Biden, and Wazza, the koala, makes a lucky escape This is TRT World’s Daily News Brief for Thursday, September 26th. Boris Johnson says supreme court ruling is wrong British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has challenged opposition MPs to try to remove him. “As a Christian Teacher, ‘Life is a Highway’” Karen E. B. Elliott, English Faculty (1997-present) On more than one occasion, I will have a frustrated student sigh and boldly ask, “Mrs. Elliott, why do we have to read this?” It’s a fair question, so instead of getting defensive because they’ve just attacked one of the so-called greatest works of literature and it’s also a personal favorite (which might be why we’re reading it), I ask the entire class, “All right, why do we read this? Why should we?” After that, a great conversation inevitably ensues; however, if I let it, things start to evolve. For each student it gets personal. Naturally, questions create controversy, and controversy is not always fun—especially at a Christian school. As an English teacher, this is where the fun begins and where class size is always an issue—the more students, the more questions—and I’ve got Milton and that other Shakespeare play to finish before midterm exams?! Classroom management suddenly feels like “whack-a-mole” and I can’t get them to remember the difference between denotation and connotation. This is when it gets challenging and frustrating at an Evangelical, international, inter-dominational Christian school. I have to cover all this, and lead them to Christ! And yet, Christ is exactly the only reason I am here. My subject is just a medium. It is through my passion for literature which Christ (in spite of my sinful self) works through me and somehow draws students toward Him. And I don’t know why we are surprised when God does this through secular works written by people who don’t believe in Him, at least not publicly. Yet, we are all made in the image of God, and many authors unknowingly further our relationship to the One who has forgiven them, too, even if they have no inkling that they need forgiveness…even if a few of their ideas are, quite frankly, unforgivable. Am I any different? And yet, God uses even me to help a particular student with serious questions—ones that will eventually determine their eternal life. I am a marked woman. I have been asked to boldly and with great difficulty and elegance keep one foot in the world, but the other one under-no-circumstances not of it. Teaching literature at a well-known, high-standard, Christian school in Boston-proper is nothing short of challenging. I must be careful. As an intellectual and Evangelical in the classroom, I feel as though I’m driving along the Pacific Highway. I’m so close to the rising paganistic-atheistic edge, that if I let my intellect or ego get the best of me, I teeter into the abyss and end up over my head in the eternal waters; however, if I trust in God, which is so difficult to do most of the time, I’ve got my best foot anchored to His side, and the journey is beautiful and He shows me the world in His proper perspective. This is what I hope to do with my students as we peer into the world, become aware of the jagged edges, the seductive and engulfing waters below, and how to help each other face the challenges it takes to journey in this beautiful but dark world where most of the time, the guardrails are few and far between. When I review literary terms with my AP class, we often revisit “irony.” It’s not what happens is unexpected or the opposite. Irony is what was intended becomes the opposite. And ironically, many of my students are brought to Christ through much of the literature that we explore in class. It’s through some of the most famous authors who unknowingly draw us unto the One who led them to inkwell or typewriter that reinforce my beloved students’ beliefs that there is absolute Truth and an all-knowing God who loves them, and asks much of them, but will, and has already, journeyed the worst road possible.
Mark Colvin like you've never heard him. In 1978 the ABC's renegade youth broadcaster Double Jay premiered an audio experiment called, What's Rangoon to you is Grafton to me. Almost 40 years later, we got back on the Pacific Highway to make a tribute to this landmark Australian radio road trip. To cut a complicated story short, we roped highly respected, ABC icon, Mark Colvin into narrating the adventure. Mark wholeheartedly supported our lofty ambitions and we're sharing it now in tribute to him.
This week I was unavailable to host the show, so my good mate and fellow comedian, Matty B stepped up to host. Recorded on the drive between Port Macquarie and Sydney, Matty gets deep with his guest their life growing up, having kids and the weirdest service station on the Pacific Highway.
