We are currently travelling, working remotely, and within 24 hours of arriving in Montenegro, we met Jelly. He was extremely thin, with a distended stomach and a little lollypop head and bulging eyes. We took him to the vets where he was put on an IV drip for dehydration, and treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for a bacterial infection that has spread into his bloodstream from his intestines. His intestines are damaged due to excessive worms, which has caused him to become malnourished. The vets have given us a very stark picture of the reality. If Jelly goes back on the streets, his condition will deteriorate and he will suffer until he eventually passes away. We have been told to find him a home where he can continue getting care or put him to sleep. We have found him a foster home and a forever home in the UK, but the total cost is over £1200. We have already spent hundreds on vet visits getting him to this point, and need your help, if you can. If you are able to and want to support, you can donate and read Jelly's full story on our Go Fund Me page. She speaks on the topics of the science behind food addiction and why we use food for comfort. She has educated thousands of people across the world and hopes to help all those struggling with food addiction. In this episode, Dr. Vera Tarman reveals how she found the connection between indulging cravings for "comfort food" and engaging in substance abuse. Yes, food can become addictive, and Dr. Vera explains how. Plus, we talk about how to know if you're addicted to food and what steps you can take to face that food addiction. Plus, we go deep into what's happening in our brains when we eat sugar and why scientists make food so addictive. [00:25] About Dr. Vera Tarman And The Inspiration Behind Food Junkies Vera is an addiction specialist. She sees people coming into a residential setting, they're putting down their alcohol, cocaine, cigarettes, and marijuana. However, they start picking up the sugar. Within two or three weeks, they started to gain a lot of weight. Eating was very much like their previous behavior of addiction. Now, Dr. Vera loves to talk about the addiction that people have with food. Plus, she even wrote a book on the subject – Food Junkies. It's a fact-filled guide to coping with compulsive overeating problems. Overeating, binge eating, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia – Dr. Vera tackles the poorly understood issue of food addiction in her book. Get Food Junkies: https://www.amazon.ca/Food-Junkies-Recovery-Addiction/dp/1459741978/benazadi-20 [06:05] How Can Food Become Addictive? The inspiration for Food Junkies came from another book, Hooked. Hooked is about the troubling story of how food companies have exploited our most fundamental evolutionary instincts to get us hooked on processed foods. Get Hooked: https://www.amazon.ca/Hooked-Food-Giants-Exploit-Addictions/dp/0771059590/benazadi-20 The food industry has made our food addictive by targeting the chemistry in our brains. Sadly, the food industry has figured out that the reward pathway will keep people coming back for their food. Brilliant scientists are paid good money to figure out how to activate those pathways. [08:50] The Negative Impacts On Your Brain When Consuming Sugars Sugars will light up part of the brain that's emotional and impulsive. It's the part of our brain that makes us do things without thought - this is all subconscious thinking. Plus, sugar will trigger dopamine primarily, which is our neurochemical of desire. There's also endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins trigger comfort while serotonin triggers connectedness. Addiction will make you want an entire bag of chips. You can't stop at one or two because your neural biology is so damaged. The physical manifestations of sugar and high-carb addiction are happening in the brain. [17:00] What You Need To Know About The Different Stages of Food Addiction When we talk about food addiction, it's essentially like diabetes. Food addiction is a chronic and progressive condition. You may have a food addiction if you would rather stay at home and eat instead of going out for a social occasion. If you consistently do not feel well because of the food you eat, you may be suffering from food addiction. Another sign of food addiction is eating foods that you know are not going to make you feel good. If your obsession with food is excessive, then you are a food addict. Lastly, if you are in trouble with your health, then you may be a food addict. “You have to be very careful if you're moving down this path of food addiction.” -Dr. Vera [25:25] Fasting For People With Addictions To Food Cutting out sugar will be the first step for people who have an addiction to food. Sugar is the trigger – so, ditch the trigger! If you have a food addiction, be aware of pitfalls. If you have a history of starving yourself, then fasting may not be the right path. Fasting can be healing; however, it's a tool that can hurt you if you do not know how to use it. If it's done carefully, fasting can be great for the body. [30:40] Why Dr. Vera Is A Massive Fan Of Eating More Protein Vera isn't necessary a fan of protein. Instead, Dr. Vera is a fan of low-carb. Protein and fat will give the body satiety. Most likely, if you are low-carb, then you are eating higher protein. Vera says she doesn't have a problem with carbs as long as they are not processed. [32:15] It Takes Three To Four Weeks To Kick Your Sugar Addiction It takes about three of four weeks to quit an addiction fully. A connection with a daily coach or sponsor will be critical on your journey. So, find support from someone while kicking your addiction. Keto Kamp is a great community of people who are ready to help you! [40:00] Treatment: Ways To Help When You're A Food Addict First of all, you have to eat the right food - you have to stop the drug! This podcast explores how one doctor is working toward better health for diabetics. Effects of high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, is well-studied in diabetic patients, often considered the dominant endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism impact factor to control. But Dr. Ahmed Iqbal is examining the role low blood sugar may play in heart attacks and sudden cardiac death. Listen and learn How exactly scientists define severe episodes of hypoglycemia and what problems those definitions pose, What effect hypoglycemia has on the cell and what role hormones like adrenaline play, and Why this complex interplay of endocrinology and diabetes may lead to heart stress under hypoglycemic conditions and how he hopes to address this issue. Ahmed Iqbal is a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield and studies endocrinology diseases. He specializes in the effects of hypoglycemia on type 1 and 2 diabetics. He offers listeners a baseline of how both diseases work biochemically in the human endocrine system and what role hormones like adrenaline play. Because glucose is an obligate fuel for the brain, its dips and rises can have an impact on how the body works. He lays out the role of liver and counter regulations of glycogen, explaining the mismatch between amount of carbohydrates taken in and amount of insulin delivery that leads to hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetics and a slightly different issue in type 2 regulation, which serves as a diminished or blunted response. He explains the basis of his study, which involves subjects with both continuous glucose monitors and heart monitors, looking at the effect of hypoglycemia on the heart. He explains that scientists know that a key defense of the body against hypoglycemia is the release of catecholamines, like adrenaline and noradrenaline, to correct blood values. However, high adrenaline is not necessarily good for the heart: such hormones can increase heart rate and the resistance against which the heart has to pump. This increases the demand on the heart, which can be problematic for those with existing heart issues. These hormones also lower potassium, which can lead to dangerous heart rhythm values. Finally, they can make platelets stickier and release immune cells, which may travel to the heart and release plaque already in the coronary arteries. His goal is to come up with mitigating strategies for these hypoglycemic effects on the heart. For more, see his web page and contact him through twitter at @Ahmed742Iqbal. If you feel like you’re doing everything right but you are struggling with energy, cravings and just can’t seem to lose the weight, hidden sugar may be the culprit. Sugar is the single biggest landmine when it comes to your health, but sugar hides in places you’d never expect: whole foods, diet foods, packaged foods, dressings . . . even sugar substitutes. And it’s not enough to cut out or cut back on sugar—you have to cut out the right kinds of sugar. In this groundbreaking program, New York Times bestselling author JJ Virgin explains the powerful concept of Sugar Impact: how different sugars react differently in the body. High Sugar Impact foods cause inflammation, energy crashes, chronic illness, and weight gain. Low Sugar Impact foods heal your body, fuel your day with prolonged energy, and promote fat burning. This eye-opening program pinpoints the most damaging sugars we eat every day—without even realizing it—in common foods like skim milk, diet soda, whole-grain bread, and “healthy” sweeteners like agave. By swapping high Sugar Impact foods for low Sugar Impact foods for 2 weeks you will transform your body and your health for good. Best of all, you don’t need to eliminate sugar completely or count calories. All sugar is not created equal. Simply drop your sugar impact and you will feel better fast!
