Come along for this ride! Join us for a fun and lively discussion with pharmacist, Dr. Dean Elbe. Sandra and Dean were colleagues close to 30 years ago when Sandra first started out in clinical nutrition. Rob and Sandra have some questions for Dean and the conversation covers a broad range of topics such as GLP-1 antagonists (weight loss medications), grapefruit and medication interactions, caffeine, antidepressants, antacids and Proton pump inhibitors, various supplements, and so much more. This is a wild and windy ride of an interview, with so many questions answered plus many more to discuss with Dean in future episodes! As a pharmacy student in 1991, Dean began researching drug-nutrient interactions for a local dietitian group. His interest in grapefruit-drug interactions led him to create the Grapefruit-Drug interactions website, which caught the attention of Zaneta Pronsky, author of Food-Medications Interactions (FMI). She invited Dr. Elbe to edit FMI, and together they toured the US, presenting on FMI at state and DPG meetings, and at FNCE Philadelphia. Dr. Elbe authored the 18th and 19th editions of the handbooks before production ceased in 2019. Seeing the need for reliable information, Dr. Elbe launched Drug Nutrition Interactions (DNI), an extensive database with over 1,100 peer-reviewed drug entries. Senior dietitian Dr. Mary Litchford provided the dietary recommendations and curated dietary guidelines. DNI is a web app, specially designed for dietitians and nutrition professionals, offering reliable and easily accessible medication information on any device. What's the difference between sugar and added sugars, and do they affect my body in the same way? This is a great question from a listener that we address today. I think we all know that there's a lot of sugar in the typical North American diet. Many of the foods that we buy from the store have an assortment of added sugars with various names and from different sources. Having too much total sugar can be detrimental to our health and may promote inflammation. It could also damage blood vessels, affect the gut in a negative way, and have ripple effects on most of our body systems and long-term health. In examining different types of sugar, we can ask ourselves, is this sugar ok, or is it the kind I'm supposed to avoid? Is there a difference in the body? How much can I have in a day? So many good questions about sugar. In answering this listener's question, Rob and Sandra cover some basics around carbohydrates, complex and simple sugars, with some information around where sugar is in our typical diet and what foods have 'natural' sugars and which ones have added sugars. Talk about a sweet episode to tune in to!:)Episodes mentioned include:Nutrition Nuggets 3. Sugar and All of It's Names https://youtu.be/lFXmOvZlKyE?si=YTjV_1QPnD_Vzu_VNutrition Nuggets 75. We talk about the biggest sources of fat in the average Canadian diet and if any of these foods are also included in the anti-inflammatory MIND diet. Enjoy this episode from Oct 2023. It's often difficult trying to change our behaviours for better health. It can take some time to identify habits and routines that may not be helpful. As we work from knowing what we want..... to where we want to be, there's a metaphor for a bridge of change. It's the 'messy middle' that takes the most grit to work through. This concept can apply to any lifestyle behaviour change situation and is often the most difficult part to change our routines for healthier habits. Today, we have a lively and enthusiastic interview with expert Toni Toledo, RD. She has her own podcast, named PATHpod and is an authority on public health and behaviour change. We discuss how sustainable changes may take a winding path on the journey for positive behaviour change. PATH POD "Change Your Thinking Habits to Change Your Eating Habits" Enjoying the show? A recent study suggests just 5 minutes of exercise could help lower blood pressure. The researchers found that replacing any less active behaviour with five minutes of vigorous exercise could help lower blood pressure. The message here is get your heart pumping, by integrating short bursts of activity into your daily routine. It can be climbing stairs at work, parking further away from the store entrance or even jumping on your bike to cycle to get your mail......walking, jogging, cycling or swimming....whatever you do to move that body, helps your circulation, heart and blood pressure. And increasing your daily activity up to 20 minutes can reduce the risk of heart disease by a significant amount. Enjoy this episode from Dec 2022. The holidays and Christmas time can be a wonderful time with holiday cheer and taking stock of your blessings. For many though, it can be the most stressful time of the year. Research shows that cardiac death rates are highest around Christmas and New Year's - the two weeks throughout the holidays (between Christmas and New Year's Eve) more people die of natural causes than what is normal for winter months. (Naveed Saleh, MD). It's an easy time to overindulge, but you don't have to steer your diet and health habits off course. It IS possible to survive the holiday season without expanding your waist line, getting that holiday bulge or dealing with overwhelm and stress. Lifestyle Strategies for self care: 1) Sleep - listen to episode 16 for more information 2) Work Duties/projects - lighten your load. Decrease screentime (checking emails, social media, etc - only one specific time period in a day). Listen to fun podcasts instead ;-) Try alternative activities - singing (good for breathing), laughing (watch comedies, see friends/family for fun), kissing under the mistletoe etc 3) Exercise - take regular breaks for walking, skating/skiing, or perhaps luging 4) Meditation - time out/mindful practices/breathe deeply/visualize 5) Diet - be mindful of pitfalls with overindulging. - think of office culture - lots of sweets, baked goods, donuts etc around for snacking on throughout the day; plan ahead and make wise choices Restaurant meals: - don't skip meals that day to 'save up' for buffet or restaurant meal - eat a regular breakfast and have something with protein for lunch to help keep blood sugars stable throughout day, even though you are eating out. Keep your rhythm with regular meals, so, you are less likely to overdo it and overeat and feel awful. Strategies while ordering: - order grill vs fried/breaded/deep fried - sides - salad/vegetables vs fries/potato - tomato-based pasta vs cream-based pasta sauces - broth or tomato-base soups vs cream based soups and chowders - baked potato - order salsa instead of butter or sour cream or cheese/bacon Traveling by vehicle: Pack a cooler - fruit/vegetables/trail mix/wraps, yogurt drinks, etc. Balancing work and family with selfcare and personal wellbeing will help with rest and recuperation.
