Yesterday was the first full moon of 2021, also nicknamed the full Wolf Moon. The full moon is an excellent time for releasing, letting go, and clearing out the things that are no longer serving you. What are the habits, beliefs, tasks, or even people that are no longer serving you? In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, gain some suggestions to explore these aspects as it relates to your finances and other areas of your life including your health and relationships. With the moon in Leo, consider: where can you bring out that roar of the lion (or that howl of the wolf) to fully express your deepest desires? How much time have you spent alone during the pandemic? How has it impacted your mental health and wellbeing? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette explores loneliness and the different experiences of BIPOC women. For women of color, our loneliness, anxiety, and depression often looks different than for white women. Our tears, grief, and sadness are not greeted with the same level of compassion as the tears, grief, or loss of our white counterparts. So, we tend to build up a resistance and not speak about the things that are bothering us. Coach Colette shares statements from the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale so you can rate yourself and examine your level of loneliness. Even though we may be celebrating the holiday on Monday, today is the actual birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette reads excerpts of the momentous “I Have a Dream” speech delivered on August 28th, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In light of recent events, it’s imperative that we recall his words and that we examine the condition of our republic today. Take some time to reflect on his message, his vision, and consider: What is it that you can do today to help further his dream? What have you been taught to believe about your value at work, in the world, in your family, in your relationships? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette offers some prompts to guide you in your inner reflection on self-worth to help set intentions for the New Year. She also shares candid revelations about her challenges with doing this same practice this year. What might happen if you allowed yourself to challenge the myth to completely reinvent yourself for the New Year? What if instead of the usual trope, you instead chose to invoke a new mantra: New Year, Same You, New Habits? Or New Year, Same You, New Intentions? This could unburden you and reinforce the fact that you can develop new habits while still appreciating and celebrating all that you are right now. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll hear some prompts to help you envision what new habits and intentions you want to create for your financial wellbeing. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some candid reflections on recent events. During the week that pro-Trump, white-supremacist terrorists stormed the US Capitol, Rev. Raphael Warnock also was elected as the first Black senator to represent Georgia. We don’t want to miss the opportunity to celebrate this accomplishment, achieved in no small part by change agents like Stacey Abrams, who mobilized thousands of Black voters in Georgia to come out and vote. If you have been triggered by the incidents that you have witnessed this week, build in time for self-care. Take some ME-time, and know that not being okay is okay. We've got your back. In this week’s episode of Financial Fridays, we also share a message about Kwanzaa, which begins tomorrow December 26th and ends next Friday, January 1st. This African-American and Pan-African holiday celebrates family, community, and culture. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies. In the Northern Hemisphere, we’ve been experiencing early sunsets, shorter days, and longer nights. Monday, December 21st marks the transition into longer days and shorter nights with the Winter Solstice. This week's Financial Fridays episode offers a preview of the celestial events on Monday. It’s been a dark year in many ways for many of us. Why not reflect on how you can let more light into your life. How are you allowing your light to shine? Also on the 21st, the two largest planets in our solar system will appear to look like they are merging in the night sky. Astronomers are calling it The Great Conjunction of 2020. Conjunctions happen when two celestial objects appear to pass close to one another as they are seen from Earth. This will be the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, forming what's being called the Christmas Star. It's been 800 years since this conjunction has happened at night, so you may want to take a peek! What were your wins in 2020? What went well? What are you most proud of? With just two Fridays left in 2020, in this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a few prompts to help you to reflect on the past year. You know when you start within and pause to reflect, it's then that you can tap into your deepest knowing. You can tap into your inner wisdom. Yesterday was Human Rights Day. The theme this year is Recover Better. We know that the COVID-19 crisis has exposed gaps in poverty, equality, discrimination, environmental degradation, and human rights protection. While the virus itself does not discriminate, it has highlighted the fact that people who are poor, marginalized, excluded, and discriminated against are more likely to get sick and not access testing. They are more likely to suffer the loss of a job, home, or other fundamental rights. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we explore some of these issues and share the pledge you can take to Stand Up 4 Human Rights. Do you have a morning ritual? Do you give yourself any amount of time at the start of the day that is just for you? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette offers a personal anecdote about her morning ritual, and what happened one day this week when she tried to skip ahead and ignore it. She also provides additional reflection questions to begin pondering about 2020 and ease into your planning for the New Year. This week the focus is on health and self-care. Did you know that December is Seasonal Depression Awareness Month? With the colder weather and the days getting shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, it's important to be aware of how well you are coping. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for short, is more than just Winter Blues or a seasonal funk. SAD is a real form of depression that is more commonly associated with the Fall and Winter months. How can you recognize the symptoms? They include low energy, depressed mood, hopelessness, irritability, anxiety, poor concentration, changes in your sleep, or loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed. In this week's Financial Friday's episode, you'll hear tips to help support your mental and physical wellbeing during this time. Did you notice the full moon lunar eclipse that happened this week? Feel an impact on your energy or mood? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares how it affected her sleep patterns and state of mind. Are you aware that both solar and lunar eclipses can be change agents to help you break free of patterns that have kept you stuck? Did you know that some consider the national holiday of Thanksgiving a reminder of the genocide and continued suffering of the Native American peoples? Participants in the Indigenous Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we share two resources [Native-Land.ca and JeremyNative.com] to foster conversations about the history of colonialism, Indigenous history, and settler-Indigenous relations. Both sites encourage us to become more aware of the real lives, the real lived history of Indigenous peoples and nations during the long era of colonialism. One way of doing so is to acknowledge the names of the tribes that once inhabited the land on which you live, something you can do on the Native Land Digital website. How did you commemorate the holiday? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some anecdotes about her Vegan Virtual Thanksgiving! For what and for whom are you most grateful this year? It's really important to allow yourself time to reflect, time to pause and collect memories of gratitude and appreciation for yourself and for others. Did you know that November is National Diabetes Month? More than 88 million American adults have pre-diabetes, or blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. The percentages of US adults living with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes is 22% in the Latinx community, 20% in the Black community, and 19% in the Asian community. This is something that we need to take seriously. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we look at the broader implications of lifestyle choices and habits that can raise your risk of becoming pre-diabetic or of getting Type 2 Diabetes. As Thanksgiving and the holidays approach, have you been thinking: What's the best way to celebrate? What’s the best way to gather in ways that are safe? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette gets personal about her own concerns and fears about meeting up with her family. To help alleviate feelings of confusion and doubt, as well as anxiety and fear, she also shares some EFT-Tapping exercises you can use to calm your nerves as you make decisions about the upcoming week. Where were you when herstory was being made last Saturday? In this week's Unplugged segment, shares a personal anecdote about her experience learning of the news about Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. How have been you navigating and managing your stress this week? Ironically, Wednesday was International Stress Awareness Day. Chronic or prolonged stress can impact your sleep, your digestion, your mood, your irritability, your blood pressure, your risk for heart disease, and your immune system. It really is important that you be mindful of how your body and your mind have been dealing with the uncertainty. This Financial Fridays episode shares some healthful coping techniques for dealing with election stress in particular, and stress in general. Did you do anything to distract yourself from waiting for election results? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares an anecdote about experimenting on a chatbot building platform to learn more about coding. She describes the irony of how the misplacement of one comma or colon can derail a whole line of code. If we extrapolate that to our current situation, we are literally counting votes one by one, and each one of those votes can make the difference. If anything, the closeness of the race has renewed her commitment to building Libbie to support Black and Brown women in the fight for justice, and the fight for mental and physical wellbeing. Have you heard the phrase: once in a blue moon? There will be a blue moon on October 31, Halloween night. Tomorrow's Full Moon is also considered both the Harvest Moon because it appears nearest to the Fall Equinox, as well as the Hunter's Moon. The full moon is a great time for releasing things that no longer serve you. What do you wish to release? The Halloween tradition is typically about trick or treating. Since 2020 has been nothing but tricks, why not focus on the treats. What are some ways that you can treat yourself this weekend? Perhaps include some pumpkin in your self-care routine to stay on the theme! Have you made your plans to vote? In this week’s Unplugged segment, Coach Colette talks about her experience of early voting. Did you know that there are still discriminatory policies like voter I.D. laws, cuts to early voting, polling place closures, and limits to pre-registration? Most of the policies impact marginalized communities; whether that be people of color, people who have been formerly incarcerated, or other marginalized groups. This election is important, so make sure you stay informed and involved. Human beings are wired for relationships. We thrive most when we’re connected and we feel lonelier when we're disconnected. In 2020, there have been lots of reasons why you may not be as in close proximity with friends, family, and loved ones. Sunday is National I Care About You Day. It's a great time to show the special people in your life that you care and appreciate them by calling or sending a text. Good relationships can promote better healing. Healthy relationships set the perfect tone for an overall healthy lifestyle, and they can give you a greater sense of purpose. What is your definition of independence? You may have seen the memes or posts this week about extreme independence being a trauma response. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette describes her experience of independence as an only child and solopreneur. She describes the comfort of being able to rely on herself as opposed to the risk and vulnerability of letting people know when she needs help. Do you tend to overcompensate, to do everything yourself, to take it all on, and not ask for help? Everyone needs help at times and there is no shame in asking for it. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and today is National Mammography Day. Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women? More than 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the US, and more than 40,000 women die from it. The good news is that there are over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Death rates from breast cancer have been going down since 1990 due to a number of factors. Chief among those factors is early detection. Are you actively doing self-breast exams to check for indications of lumps? It is important to examine your body to be aware of any changes. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we explore the benefits of having a mammogram, which is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. Mammograms can often show a breast lump before you can feel it with your fingers. Have you ever experienced being triggered by a small inconvenience, only to have it turn into an intense emotional reaction? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares personal anecdotes about not fully grieving the loss of Summer. There's so much happening in our world today with the pandemic, racial and social unrest, and the political landscape. October is a month in which there is much to recognize and commemorate. We'll start the month with a focus on Emotional Wellness and Emotional Intelligence Awareness. Emotional Intelligence has been shown to improve mental health, physical health, and other professional pursuits. A lower EI can hinder your relationships with others and can affect the way you relate with yourself. In this episode of Financial Fridays, Coach Colette introduces the four domains of EI: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Paying close attention to the first domains relating to the self, she shares probing questions to help you reflect on how to become more self-aware, and have more self-regulation. This is discussed within the context of our current challenges of living in the pandemic and with rampant racial and social injustices. Yesterday was the first full moon of this month in Aries. Full moons can be a great time to release what no longer serves you. Can you start to see what’s been holding you back, find ways to move into transformation, and to get more aligned? The Fall equinox offers us the opportunity to examine what you have harvested thus far and to reflect upon your abundance. How you can appreciate the Fall season. And, while you may be ready to finish 2020 as fast as you can, what are your intentions for this last quarter? What would you like to manifest as we approach the end of the year? What would it feel like to be scared all of the time? What do you think it would do to your mental health and physical well-being? These are questions that Coach Colette asked of potential investors during her recent pitch of Libbie, our upcoming mental health chatbot to support women of color dealing with anxiety, stress, and trauma. This week's Unplugged segment includes a personal anecdote about the challenge of responding to investors who ask: "Why to focus just on women of color?" In light of this week's disturbing news about the ongoing lack of justice for Breonna Taylor, the answer seems obvious to many. Coach Colette again articulates her reasoning for intentionally focusing on helping women of color to heal and thrive. Did you know that 1980 was the first year that the US Census offered Hispanic as an option to describe one's ethnic identity? In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day, this episode of Financial Friday focuses on the diverse cultural identities within the Hispanic and Latinx communities. We cannot ignore the fact that the word "Hispanic" does not reflect the diverse multinational, multicultural, and multilingual identities. It can be said that those who are not Hispanic (or Black for that matter) have gained from erasing experiences of the diverse range of cultural identities, whether they be Chicano, Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or other identities. This episode also celebrates the contributions that Latinx entrepreneurs are making to the US economy. Have you been feeling tired, overwhelmed? This week was the New Moon in Virgo. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a personal anecdote about being more specific about what it was that she needed to heal this week. This New Moon can help you to examine all of the unprocessed, undealt with wounds; to look at the areas in which your energy is being drained; to look at where you may have been overextending yourself; to look at where you've been fighting against things, as opposed to allowing and receiving. To close out the Black Business month, we take a journey back in time. Did you know that long before Airbnb there was The Negro Motorist Green Book? First published in 1936, the Green Book was the innovation of a Harlem-based postal carrier named Victor Hugo Green. Because of the discrimination Black people faced whenever they ventured outside their neighborhoods, Black travelers often couldn’t find safe places to eat and sleep. Victor Hugo Green sought to solve this problem. By the early 1940s, the Green Book listed thousands of establishments from across the country, all of them either Black-owned or verified to be non-discriminatory. In this episode of Financial Fridays, hear how he expanded listings (the first edition only covered hotels and restaurants in the New York area) by leveraging information from fellow postal workers and offering cash payments to readers for useful information. Coach Colette draws parallels between Green's efforts in crowdsourcing and sponsorship with efforts made by current Black innovators and entrepreneurs to stimulate you to keep pursuing your dreams. Did you know that JOY is an act of RESISTANCE? Are you struggling to find your joy these days? In this week's Unplugged segment, you'll get some motivation as you hear an excerpt from the poem The Telly Cycle by the prolific author, Toi Derricotte. It contains a reference to the love between a Black woman and a fish named Telly. Learn more about the personal connection to this narrative for Coach Colette and her fish Stripe, particularly as she prepares to celebrate her birthday, remaining grateful for the years she's had on this Earth as a Black woman in America. In recognition of Black Business Month, this episode of Financial Fridays continues our focus on US Black businesses. According to digitalundivided, 82% of Black business owners report that they have experienced a decrease or loss of revenue due to COVID-19. Black-owned businesses are more likely to be based in so-called COVID-19 "hot spots," meaning they are operating in communities with: longer forced closures, more COVID-19 symptoms, more social distancing, and fewer customers. Reports indicate that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) did not support businesses in COVID-19 "hot spots." Nationally, just 2% of the hundreds of billions of dollars of CARES Act PPP loans went to Black-owned businesses. In New York City, only 7% of Bronx businesses and 11% of Queens businesses received PPP funding. The overwhelming majority of Black business owners — nearly 3 out of 4 — reported that they needed emergency funding immediately in order to survive this pandemic. “Tell me about your little business.” “Well, you know the projects that they work on tend to be on the high end.” In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a recent virtual networking interaction in which the other person (a white man) uttered these two remarks during their conversation. In this discussion on implicit bias and microaggressions, she encourages us to ponder the question: Would he have used that same diminutive language if he had been speaking to another white man? Did you know that Black-owned businesses have created over 1 million jobs and generated over $165 billion in revenue? As we're still celebrating Black Business Month, we continue our history lesson on Black entrepreneurship in the US. Black Americans have a long and rich history of entrepreneurship. Within two decades of the abolition of slavery, Black people established several thousand successful businesses that thrived in exclusively Black communities, such as the Black Wall Street of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this week's Financial Friday episode, we explore the barriers to Black business ownership. For example, a recent study conducted by a team of researchers from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Rutgers University, and Lubin Research found that banks were three times more likely to request follow-up appointments with white business owners than better-qualified Black business owners, and the Black business owners were subjected to far greater personal and financial scrutiny compared to their equal or less creditworthy white counterparts. Coach Colette also discusses how Black entrepreneurs have been innovators in the use of technology and social media to grow and scale their businesses. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses duality and intersectionality. In one week, we experienced the historic moment of Senator Kamala Harris being nominated for Vice President. We also recognized Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which marks the fact that Black women on average earn just $.62 for the $1.00 that an average white man earns in the US. It takes an extra 8 months and 13 days to earn the same amount. These two instances show us how far we have come, and at the same time, how far we still have to go. Did you know that August -- in addition to being Coach Colette's birthday month -- is Black Business month? In this episode of Financial Fridays, we kick off with some results from a 2020 survey of over 3,100 small business and franchise owners in the US by Guidant Financial and the Small Business Trends Alliance. This survey found that Black-owned businesses exist across all industries, with the top industry category being Business Services at 20%. The next most popular industry categories were tied at 9%: 1) Retail; 2) Health, Beauty and Fitness Services; and 3) Restaurant or Food Services. The fifth most popular industry according to the survey was Construction and Contracting at 8%. While Black entrepreneurs were 30% more likely than the average of all surveyed small business owners to solely operate their businesses, there was a 19% decrease in Black solopreneurs from 2019. This survey showed that 45% of Black-owned businesses have 2-5 employees. We know that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lock-down that a number of Black-owned businesses have been severely impacted financially. It will be really interesting to see how this data shifts next year based on all that we are experiencing now. What do you do when someone questions your integrity or intention? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette candidly shares a recent experience in her business. She also walks us through various EFT-Tapping points to reveal how to use the process to heal after something has triggered a negative response, or to release when you’re feeling pent-up, stuck energy. In this week's episode Financial Fridays, we close out BIPOC Mental Health Month with an upbeat history lesson on Black pioneers in mental health. Our first is Dr. Maxie Clarence Maultsby, the founder of the psychotherapeutic method of rational behavioral therapy. His technique of cognitive-behavioral therapy and counseling was the first comprehensive, short-term, culture and drug-free technique of psychotherapy that produced long-term therapeutic results. Next is Mamie Phipps Clark, whose groundbreaking research on the impact of race on Child Development was influential in desegregation efforts, including the Brown vs. Board of Education decision in 1954. A third mental health pioneer is Jacki McKinney, a family advocate specializing in issues affecting African-American women and their children and a founding member of the National People of Color Consumer/Survivor Network. And, finally, there is Linda James Myers, whose work focuses on healing practices and psychotherapeutic processes at the intersection of race, gender and class. Have you found your good trouble? In this week's episode of Unplugged, Coach Colette shares some recent professional setbacks along with how she has maintained her pursuit of good trouble during these past five months of lockdown and racial uprising. She has felt the need to double down on her mission to help BIPOC leaders and women to heal from trauma. Coach Colette also shares inspiring quotes from Rep. John Lewis in an op-ed for the New York Times he requested to be published on the day of his funeral. If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it on Instagram and tag @coach_colette! Did you know that following the COVID-19 outbreak in the US, there were nearly 1,500 reported incidents of anti-Asian racism in just one month? These included physical and verbal attacks as well as reports of anti-Asian discrimination in private businesses. Or, that in 2018 38% of Latinx people were verbally attacked for speaking Spanish, told to go back to their countries, called a racial slur or treated unfairly? As we are in the midst of BIPOC Mental Health Month, today's Financial Fridays episode focuses on race-based traumatic stress. This refers to the mental and emotional injury caused by encounters with racial bias, ethnic discrimination, systemic racism, or hate crimes. It is similar to the experience of people who have dealt with other forms of PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder. It can be direct, or vicarious -- meaning witnessing the experience of others through pictures or videos of violent incidents. "Well, I don't know if you covered it in the beginning, but I was wondering where you got your training?" This is a question that Coach Colette received from a white male participant in one of her recent EFT-Tapping webinars. While on the surface any question can seem innocent; however, reading between the lines can be a valuable skill to have. In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette talks about racial gaslighting. The official definition is: "the political, social, economic, and cultural process that perpetuates and normalizes a white supremacist reality through pathologizing those who resist." In this case, an attempt to question the legitimacy of a person and their qualifications based on racial identity. Have you had the experience of being gaslighted? It doesn’t necessarily have to be connected to racial identity. This is a tactic that people use to manipulate others in personal relationships, in familial relationships, or in professional relationships. In this Financial Fridays episode, we continue our focus on BIPOC Mental Health awareness through the lens of COVID-19. The historic causes of mental health challenges in communities of color include: the legacy of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, economic stressors, and systemic failures. The onset of the Coronavirus pandemic greatly amplified this distress for BIPOC communities. Chronic stress can weaken immunity, making BIPOC populations more vulnerable to diseases like COVID-19 and the underlying health conditions that increase the risk of COVID-19. We must remain vigilant about creating culturally-competent mental health and wellness care, and to dismantle systemic and economic barriers that keep BIPOC communities locked in situations that are draining our collective resolve. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses initial results from our How Have You Been Coping? survey, in which people have shared the mental and physical effects of the pandemic and the lock-down. 70% of respondents indicate having feelings of anxiety or frustration; and 50% express feeling worried or stuck and not able to take action. Did you know that there are 573 federally recognized Native tribes in the United States? Or, that Indigenous people speak more than 200 different languages? In today's Financial Fridays, we continue our conversation on BIPOC Mental Health, with a focus on the "I" that stands for Indigenous or Native peoples. According to Mental Health America, Native and Indigenous people make up 1.3% of the US population. Of that segment, 19% or 827,000 people reported having a mental illness in the past year. When we look at the mental health issues facing Native and Indigenous people, the lack of awareness about services that are available, as well as a lack of programs and providers that are sensitive to Native and Indigenous cultures can prevent them from seeking out treatment. They are much more likely to seek help from a spiritual or a traditional healer, than from more traditional medical sources. That's why having culturally-responsive and culturally-competent mental health care is so crucial. Are you consciously aware that certain words or terms that you use could be considered offensive to others? With the renewed nationwide debate on racism, many Native leaders have seen this as an opportunity to reiterate the call to remove racially insensitive symbols in team names like the Washington Redskins in the NFL, and the Cleveland Indians in MLB. In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette describes a recent experience of discovering that a well-known term in EFT-Tapping has been shown to be offensive to Asian-American people. She candidly expresses her discomfort learning that she had unknowingly used the term on several occasions, and her commitment to removing the term from her materials and future sessions. The month of July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month. The acronym stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Color. The goal is to bring attention to the trauma that stems from systemic oppression and racism that impacts communities of color. Trauma is connected to mental health on so many different levels. It comes both from present-day and historical occurrences. Subconsciously, BIPOC communities have been taught to devalue their mental faculties, and question their beauty and intelligence. In this episode of Financial Fridays, we explore this as an opportunity to also speak about how resilient BIPOC communities are. Coach Colette offers suggestions to engage in self-care therapy, like EFT-Tapping and other avenues of therapy, that can help people to express the negative realities of white supremacy, and heal personal and historical trauma. “When we finally stop asking America to love us and begin to love ourselves, we will prosper as a people.” This quote is by journalist and best-selling author, Bebe Moore Campbell, for whom this month was dedicated in 2008. Moore was an advocate for mental health who encapsulated the ideologies of self-love and self-care. Originally, it was called Minority Mental Health Month. That connotation conjures up negative images of lack and scarcity. When you love yourself FIRST, it steams rolls your confidence and grounds you. Your feet become roots into the Earth, and you can compare yourself to an allegorical tree. You may sway and bend; but it is going to take a strong gust of wind to snap or break you. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette suggests we concentrate on abundance and resilience, so we can stand strong as a collective and see ourselves in a positive light. This will help us to bring light and joy to one another. If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it on Instagram and tag @coach_colette! This is the last Friday in June. We are approaching July 1, which will mark the end of the first half of 2020. If you were to take a look at the intentions and goals that you set at the beginning of the year, what have you already manifested? What would you still like to manifest? Have your intentions or goals shifted based on what's been happening in the world? In this episode of Financial Fridays, we focus on this midpoint. Now is a great opportunity to take some time to reflect on where you are now, where you would like to be, and what you would like to accomplish over the next three months. Just one week after Juneteenth, and the social media displays by many companies, one can wonder how things are shifting inside the workplace. In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses the concept of allyship. She shares a personal anecdote about a recent experience that could be described by the hashtag #WorkingWhileBlack. Being an ally really does require proactive action. For example, saying that you're not racist or that you're not homophobic; saying that you want to help but don't know how, is not action that has a tangible impact. What does allyship mean to you? Today marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we discuss this historical commemoration. In the early years, little interest existed outside the black community to participate in the celebrations. In some cases, there was explicit resistance by barring the use of public property for the festivities. Today, 47 of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have recognized Juneteenth as either a state holiday or day of observance. The three states that do not recognize Juneteenth are Hawaii, North Dakota, and South Dakota. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses FREEDOM. What does FREEDOM mean to you? How do you feel when you notice other people's freedom being restricted or limited? Do you choose to respond, or stay silent? This is a good time as Sukhtej suggests to take action. Did you know that in 1965, 100 years after Emancipation, black Americans were more than 10% of the population, but held less than 2% of the wealth in the US, and less than 0.1% of the wealth in stocks? Or that in 2016, the average black American family had total wealth of $17,600, about 1/10 the wealth of the average white American family, which stood at $171,000? It's been estimated that it could take 228 years for black Americans to reach the level of wealth white American households enjoy today. In this week's Financial Fridays, we explore racial economic inequality, which has primarily been the result of long term investment in some communities, and a lack of investment in others. There have been exclusionary policies and strategies such as limited access to federal mortgage lending and redlining. A study by The Guardian in 2018 showed that minority owned businesses grew 400%. They found that 38% of black-owned businesses were female-owned, which is actually higher than the average of 23%, among all other small business owners. Yet the study showed that minority-owned businesses received lower loan amounts than non-minority businesses. On this week's episode of Unplugged, Coach Colette speaks about racialized trauma. She discusses a theory developed by Resmaa Menakem, who is a therapist and trauma specialist based in Minneapolis, MN. It's called the HIPP Theory; and it stands for historical, intergenerational, persistent institutional, personal traumas. What Resmaa suggests is that it's often so coupled together, that we can't tell the difference. The only thing we notice is the overwhelm. Coach Colette shares some tips to help get some relief and release from our different traumas. How have you been processing and dealing with your HIPP trauma? Did you know that each year marine plants produce more than a half of our atmosphere's oxygen? Or, that a mature tree can clean our air by absorbing 22 kilos of carbon dioxide, while releasing oxygen in exchange? On this Financial Fridays episode, we're taking time to focus on biodiversity, in recognition of World Environment Day. Biodiversity is the foundation that supports all of us on land and below the sea. It affects every aspect of our health and wellbeing. This is a time to remember the importance of protecting our environment, and to recognize how interdependent we are. It's been estimated that, without changes in our consumption, within the next 10 years, one out of every four known species may be wiped off the planet. How can you help to make this world a safe habitat for all of us to live? Now more than ever, it is important to keep lines of communication open with your black and brown brothers and sisters. Learn to listen to other people’s voices. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, not to mention countless others that have been maimed or murdered, have been emotionally, physically, and mentally draining for people of color. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette turns our attention to these recent violent events, and introduces us to a condition called racial battle fatigue. This term was coined in 2003, by Professor William Smith, a professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Utah. It describes the social and psychological stressors faced by African-Americans; specifically, black males on historically-white college campuses in the US. Chronic exposure to racial microaggressions and overt racism can be life-threatening, and lead to depression, anxiety, migraines, fatigue, and several other health issues. Coach Colette suggests that you make yourself a priority, and do your inner work. If you need to talk to a therapist or coach, do that! Make time to move your body and eat nutritious foods. Did you know that it's possible to be surrounded by people and still feel alone? In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we're exploring more tools to help you thrive while managing your emotions. This week's Financial Fridays episode focuses on how you can improve your social connection with others. It's been shown that the number of friendships you have in your adult life, especially early in your adult life, and how close those relationships are, will influence your wellbeing -- even up to 30 years later. What are you doing to create time for fun, play and socializing? Making time for those activities is important to support your mental health and wellbeing. What other choices have you been making in this pandemic? In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette talks about her A-HA! moment about making choices from a place of fear, or a survival mindset. She suggests that you consider your choices not from a place of self-judgment or guilt. Perhaps you'll have an A-HA! moment like she did, and learn more about your response to traumatic situations -- be it FIGHT, FLIGHT OR FREEZE. Sukhtej asks you to consider how you might benefit from government financial support programs for businesses and individuals that were put in place in light of COVID-19. What lessons are you learning from life in the time of Corona? If you'd like to share your responses or thoughts, send us a message here. We are continuing our focus on Mental Health during this Awareness Month of May. We love the theme of this Awareness Month, which is Tools 2 Thrive. One of the ways that you can thrive in your mental health and wellbeing is to own your feelings. It's been shown that people who can be more specific about identifying or labeling their emotions are less likely to self-injure, engage in potentially harmful self-coping habits, or to be physically aggressive with others. In this episode of Financial Fridays, Coach Colette shares tips and ideas to help you to recognize and own your feelings. Sukhtej also gives us another reminder of the benefits of starting an emergency fund -- even if it's only a small amount that you are able to put aside in the present time. Have you noticed any unexpected positive outcomes that have resulted from your current situation? Are there things that you're doing now that could be beneficial for you to KEEP doing, (or STOP doing), after this pandemic has subsided? Perhaps you can be reminded of the analogy that "beautiful gifts can be wrapped in sandpaper." In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses the benefits of re-framing your perspective, especially in challenging times. What lessons are you learning from life in the time of Corona? Under normal circumstances, this past Wednesday, April 15, would have been Tax Day in the US. Be sure to check that your state filing deadline also has been changed, and see if it coincides with the July 15 federal filing date. This week was National Public Health Week. It's so significant to recognize this celebration now because of all of the nurses, doctors, EMTs, medical researchers, and midwives who are going above and beyond --- all of the public health workers who are putting their lives at risk so that we can stay healthier, and help to flatten the curve of COVID-19. In New York City, at 7 pm at night, people have taken to clapping outside of their windows, on their porches, or on their fire escapes, to give a standing ovation to all of the public health workers, thanking them for putting their lives on the line so that so many more of us can stay healthy and well. Consider, how can you share some loving kindness from your heart? If someone in your family is an essential worker, or if you know of a friend who is a public health worker, how can you give them some encouragement or express your gratitude? We are all in this together, navigating this challenging situation. Also in this episode, Coach Colette shares a personal anecdote about how she has been reacting to cancellations in her weekly schedule. She describes her A-HA moment about balancing aspects of predictability in all of this uncertainty. She also shares insights she's gained from Jon Kabat Zinn and Deepak Chopra on practicing the Mindfulness Attitude of Letting Go, and the Spiritual Law of Detachment. Congratulations on surviving the year that was March, and welcome to April! How you are doing? Did you know that today is Find a Rainbow Day? A rainbow is not truly an object, and cannot be physically approached. So, you can't touch it. Yet, we all believe that it's real, and we feel really good when we get to see a rainbow in the sky. For example, what is something that is perhaps out of your reach today, because of all that's going on, that can still bring you joy in the moment? In this week's Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette offers some inspiration to consider how you can shift your perspective to see things in a more colorful way, especially in this time of uncertainty. We hope that you are staying healthy and safe in these challenging times. Have you heard the acronym VUCA? It started as a military term, and it stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. You'll learn more in this week's Financial Fridays episode. As we continue our focus on Women's History Month, meet the next powerhouse woman, Zitkala Sa (which means Redbird in Lakota). This Yankton Dakota Sioux writer, editor, translator, musician, educator, and political activist has been noted as one of the most influential Native American activists of the 20th century. In 1913, Zitkala Sa wrote the libretto and songs for the Sundance Opera, the first Native American opera. During the 1920's, she promoted a pan-Indian movement to unite all of America's tribes in the cause of lobbying for citizenship rights. She continued to work for civil rights and better access to healthcare and education for Native Americans until her death in 1938. In light of Suki's commentary on market volatility, Coach Colette was inspired to offer additional guidance to navigate and manage your emotions and feelings in this VUCA environment. She shares her personal journey this past week dealing with rapidly changing information and concerns about her wellbeing. She also provides suggestions to help ease your tension, calm your nerves, and get grounded. If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it on Instagram and tag @Coach_Colette! In this week's Financial Fridays, we continue our focus on Women's History Month, with an eye towards female pioneers in health and wellness. Sarah Loguen Fraser was an African-American female doctor, one of only 115 in the nation in the 1890's. In 1876, she became the first woman to gain an MD from Syracuse University College of Medicine, the second in New York, and the first to graduate from a co educational medical school. Frazier became the fourth African-American female doctor in the United States, and the first female doctor in the Dominican Republic. What's really interesting is that her childhood home in Syracuse was an important stopping point on the Underground Railroad. Growing up in this house allowed Frazier to gain experience helping and treating illnesses that people had suffered as a result of their slavery or their escape. She was one of the first female doctors to specialize in obstetrics and pediatrics, and was a mentor to black midwives. Throughout her career. Loguen Frazier educated black midwives to integrate modern medical knowledge into their traditional routines. In addition to providing insight into Frazier's medical career, Coach Colette also shares tips to help you get a good night's rest, in honor of this being Sleep Awareness Week. These are unsettling times -- and we want to support you as much as we can. In that light, Sukhtej offers some guidance for money management in light of market turbulence and COVID-19. Did you know that the term "Woman Computer" was once a job title? Given that March is National Women's History Month, we have set the intention to share accomplishments of dynamic women pioneers across various industries. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we're focusing on women in STEM and honoring Katherine Johnson. You may know that on February 24, 2020, Katherine Johnson passed away at age 101. She was one of the first African-American graduates at West Virginia University. In 1953, she started working at NASA's precursor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Johnson joined West Computing, which was a segregated unit of African-American women computers. For her computations on America's first human spaceflight project, Freedom 7, Johnson became the first African-American woman to have her name on a technical paper issued by NASA's Langley Research Center. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to STEM and the country as a whole, despite segregation by racism and sexism. In addition to Suki's tip to ride the wave of market volatility, you'll also hear Coach Colette share a tribute and a personal anecdote about James Lipton. Lipton passed away on March 2, 2020. He was a writer, lyricist, actor, and dean emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City. What stories do you find inspiring? Maybe they are those of pioneers, unsung heroes or people overcoming great adversity? In this episode, Coach Colette dives into the history of Dr. Myra Adele Logan, an incredible black female physician and surgeon who was the first woman to perform open heart surgery! During the 1960s, she also researched the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. She developed X-ray processes that allowed tumors to be discovered earlier. While Black History Month is a month to celebrate the countless contributions African Americans have made, it's important to remember these stories in our daily lives. There is still so much we can learn from sharing the accomplishments of our heroes and she-roes. Also, Suki is back with another great website suggestion.
