In this sermon, we explore the powerful truth behind the phrase, “New Year, Same You.” While the turning of a calendar year brings new opportunities, it also reminds us of what hasn't changed—our struggles, our failures, and our need for a Savior. Reflecting on Jesus' baptism, we uncover how his perfect life, death, and resurrection redefine our identity. You are not just a sinner carrying the weight of your past; you are a saint, declared God's beloved child through baptism. Join us as we unpack how this unchanging truth shapes every moment of our lives in this new year and beyond.Vicar Behm's sermon preached at Faith on January 19, 2025.Intro/Outro Music: “Depth of Field” by David Hilowitz
NEW YEAR - SAME YOU! New habits, new routines - SAME YOU!! Josie Balka writes, "Midnight on New Year's Day doesn't mean you become a new person but it is an opportunity for a blank slate and a fresh start if you would like to take it." What if we prioritized and kept resolutions that aren't concentrated on changing us and fixing us, but rather, ones that will have meaning and impact at the end of our lives? What if instead of focusing on SHRINKING our bodies, we focus on EXPANDING our lives in more meaningful ways? It's just a thought. And one we hope you will consider.Elizabeth Pehrson created The Exchange in 2015. The Exchange is a monthly event for ALL adult women. Women who work outside the home. And women who work in the home. Women who are single. And women who are married. Women who are moms. Women who are grand-moms. No matter what season of life you are in, The Exchange is here to inspire you to live life ON PURPOSE and WITH INTENTION.The Exchange is a non-profit that provides an environment for women to hear practical advice from topics Elizabeth has read and life lessons she has learned, and is currently learning. Equipping us to become better women tomorrow than we are today. And to ultimately use that to pour back into those around us. Finances can be a touchy topic for so many people, but what if it doesn't have to be that way? What if your money can serve you instead of you feeling like a slave to your money? As we wrap up this four part series, New Year, Same You, I want to acknowledge that not all of us are looking forward to the year. Some of us have crawled into 2024 still feeling like we are purely surviving, still grieving the losses of 2023, and still healing from the damage done. You know better than anyone that just because it's a new year, it's not a new you. In part 4 of this series I discuss these unique challenges with the author of Not What I Signed Up For, Nicole Unice. As a pastor and community leader. She is the author of several books on healthy faith, honing in on the connection between our emotional and spiritual life. She's the host of How to Study the Bible, a popular weekly podcast that reaches people in 188 different countries in the last year alone, and preaches frequently for conferences and churches. She makes her home with husband, Dave, in the historic Fan district of Richmond, VA with their three almost-grown children and two pups.Nicole knows loss, grief, and failed expectations and as she emerges from that season she has a great word of encouragement for all of us. She challenges us not to miss the God-opportunities that are right in front of us, even in the hard, and to lean into truly living a life of faith through trusting God's purposes.SHOW LINKS:Not What I Signed Up For Dwell Differently Beyond Our Control

Happy New Year! Time to get back to work, lose that holiday weight, set new goals, and Change. Your. Life!!! But what if…and hear us out here….what if you didn't do any of those things at all? In this episode, we're discussing the social pressures that confront us at the start of each new year and exploring how to: determine if you really want or need to make changes; decide if the timing is even right for change; and create a plan that will help you make desired changes without burning out in the process. And just remember that even if you're eager to set new goals this January, the New Year doesn't have to mean a New You. You can stay the Same You and that would still be just fine and dandy. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit virginiasolesmith.substack.comBeing able to feed yourself without the observation of someone around you just really changes things. You're listening to Burnt Toast. This is the podcast where we talk about diet culture, fat phobia, parenting and health. I'm Virginia Sole-Smith, I also write the Burnt Toast newsletter. Today we are revisiting a newsletter essay, one that I actually published just last month. It's called “Do I Wear Spanx to Family Court?” I'm going to read the piece, and then my good friend Lyz Lenz is coming on to discuss divorce and diet culture with us. If you don't know Lyz, she writes the excellent substack newsletter . She's also the author of God Land: A Story of Faith, Loss, and Renewal in Middle America, and Belabored: A Vindication of the Rights of Pregnant Women. And she has a third book coming out in 2024 called This American Ex Wife. Lyz is a really amazing political journalist, memoirist, all around phenomenally talented writer and my local divorce expert, so I'm really excited to have her on the episode. We are also working on a very special New Year, Same You episode for January (by we I mean me and Corinne and Tommy!). And we want to know what is your anti-diet, fat positive New Year's resolution! Obviously January is the super toxic time. It is the diet industry's Super Bowl. So we want to know what you resolve to do in 2023 to divest from diet culture, and help dismantle anti-fat bias. So this could be like super simple, like you are not going to redownload Noom. Or it could be some bigger goal for changes you want to make in your family, advocacy you want to do in your community. Whatever it is, we want you to send us a note or even better record a short voice memo on your phone and email that to virginiasolesmith.assistant@gmail.com. This episode is our December paywall episode. That means to hear the whole conversation or read the whole transcript, you will need to go paid. It's just $5 a month or $50 for the year. You will get the first week free, and you will get my full conversation with Lyz including our Butters which are both excellent entertainment ideas for your kids, if you are looking down the long specter of winter break and wondering how you're gonna fill some time. Plus you're just gonna get all of Lyz's brilliance. We talk about the revenge body, we talk about family court, we talk about co parenting, there's so much good stuff here. Okay, here's the essay. It ran on November 1. VirginiaSo Lyz, you have written so brilliantly about divorce. You are the smartest person I know about divorce. I text you whenever I want to know about divorce.LyzWhich isn't that often, for her husband who's listening.VirginiaYou are extremely knowledgeable about this topic and your next book, This American Ex Wife, is about divorce. So you are here as my divorce expert and I'm curious: Do you see diet culture playing a role in American divorces? LyzOh, absolutely. Something initially with divorce that hits on diet culture is the “revenge body.” Anybody who's gotten divorced will tell you about the stress and the weight loss associated with it—or not! Sometimes it's weight gain. But there is the expectation of having that “post-breakup revenge body.” I've seen TikToks that are kind of making jokes like, you want to sit on the couch and relax, but you remember you have to be the hot one in the breakup. VirginiaI never thought about this. LyzYou know, like the “getting back out there” body. I know for a lot of men, divorce involves some free time, which, that time used to be managed by someone and now they don't know what to do. So there is an aspect to the culture of the Divorced Dad in the gym. I follow quite a few TikTok accounts of divorce influencers which are out there…VirginiaWow, divorce influencers.LyzSo the divorced dad going to the gym, the mom trying to get hot and get back out there. It hit me so personally when I got divorced because I was so stressed out, and my response to stress is to not eat. I lost a lot of weight, and it was not healthy. And I remember people being like, “Oh, you look so good,” and me being like, “I'm so stressed out, I'm not sleeping or eating. You should be asking me if I'm okay.” I would get so angry about it, too, because then also people—as you know—people treat you differently. All of a sudden the men would see me differently because it was a very unhealthy amount of weight [to lose].VirginiaIt sounds like a a parallel with postpartum “get your body back” pressure.LyzYes. VirginiaSo for a lot of women you'll have just done that in recent years and now you have to do the “revenge body.” And why are we not allowed to just let our bodies be during times of stress and trauma?LyzRight, right. And I think, too, it's so hard when you layer on that the idea that exists in the divorce world that you now have to find someone else. I hate that. I hate that whole idea. That's what most divorce books are. It's like, okay, well, you did it, now how do you find love again? So that comes with that added pressure of being good looking which then translates to diet culture. Thinness, muscles.VirginiaI'm just remembering a piece of yours where you were like, “actually all women want is to live alone in the woods with our wolves.” No, we don't want to get remarried. That's not the goal but that is immediately the expectation. Why do you want to get right back into the thing you just got out of?LyzWell, I think there's that pressure of singleness, right? There's that stigma of singleness. But you're right, most women post-divorce don't remarry. It's the men who remarry. It's somewhere around 70% of women initiate divorces and I think it's less than 40%—I need to fact check myself on that. But it is a lower number who then get remarried. It's an overwhelming number of men who then try to remarry because, like, “I don't know how to find mustard in the grocery store without a woman.” But no, you're right. I mean, every married woman I know wants to just live alone in the woods with a wolf, so.VirginiaAnd part of that freedom would be not needing to be hot while you do it, just being able to be. LyzYes, not being a hot witch. VirginiaJust want to be a witch.LyzWhy do we have to have weird witch beauty standards? There's this great moment I think about a lot in the book Don Quixote where he's traveling along and he meets all these shepherds. And they're like, “There's this one b***h, she's awful. She broke all of our hearts. She's so beautiful. We hate her. She's evil.” And then they're talking about her and she just walks up to them and goes, “I'm not evil. I don't like any of you. Stop talking to me. I didn't try to seduce you. I just existed and you thought I was in love with you.” And then she's basically like, “I don't want to be in your narrative.” And then she goes back into the woods and she never shows up in the book ever again. VirginiaShe's our queen. LyzI think about her all the time. VirginiaThat's icon behavior for sure. So, what else besides revenge body comes up? Anything about divorce and diet culture.LyzThen there's that whole aspect of divesting yourself of the body ideas that come from the relationship. I think there are so many ways that happens. You might have married a person looking a very specific way but, as we all know, time and life and children take a toll. And then the other person is like, “Well, you don't look how you used to” and you're like, “Well, I never will.”VirginiaThat's life. That's time passing.LyzAnd marriage is so physical. It's a bodily connection, right? So having divorce enables you—especially if you're in a bad marriage. I mean, obviously people can have good marriages. My bias is that I think marriage is inherently unequal and bad. You can have good relationships within a bad system, but it's still a bad system. So I'm gonna get that out there. But so when you do divorce, part of that rebuilding of identity and rebuilding of sense of self comes with, like, who am I now? Like, what is my body now? And now I don't have to manage that other person's toxic body / diet stuff. I don't have to manage the expectations of another person on my body and on my sense of self. I don't have to have somebody judging what I'm eating. And then you can also make your own food. That was something that blew my mind that I didn't expect. Like, I am not cooking for this other person who wants boneless, skinless chicken breasts every single f*****g night. VirginiaThe saddest of proteins, trulyLyzHe would have lived on boneless, skinless chicken breast and microwaved frozen vegetables. I'm like, “let's roast a chicken from Ina Garten. Let's make vegan stew!” and none of that would fly. So, yeah, being able to feed yourself without the observation of someone around you just really changes things. And since we have 50/50 custody—and it's always different with children around—but I get to sit and be like, “what is it that I actually want to eat? And when do I want to eat? And how do I want to eat?” It just makes me so much more thoughtful and grateful about what I'm consuming in my body.VirginiaOne woman I interviewed described it as a “food rumspringa” because she was free from his expectations. For her it was embracing stuff like Annie's Mac and Cheese—like I don't have to cook, I can just enjoy eating a box of mac and cheese for dinner and watching Gilmore Girls and be so happy. What was your favorite thing you ate when you realized this liberation? LyzFor a while I got really into cooking complicated recipes from the New York Times. That kind of stopped. I did the opposite of everybody in 2020, in the shutdown year. Everybody got into cooking and I was like, “I'm done, peace out. I will now be ordering food exclusively.” So another one was eating out because my ex does not like to go out to eat and and it was very stressful around, like, if you go out to eat and then what you order. You know, should you get a glass of wine or god forbid order dessert? That's, like, so extra and why are you doing that? So just going out to eat by myself and an ordering whatever I wanted and dessert was a game changer. VirginiaI love that.LyzAnd then I'd make complicated recipes just for myself because I'm like, “oh, he didn't like curry so now I will make curry.”VirginiaNow you can have all the curry! Revenge curry seems way better than revenge body, I'm just gonna put that out there.

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!Thank you so much for joining me again!Happy Friday! This week's theme for the podcast is: New Year, Same You, New MoodThis week I want to talk to you about how important it is to know that you do not have to recreate yourself every single year. A 'new you' is not required yearly, but it can be helpful to make some shifts & changes that will support your current work & goals. But with change can come some challenges, which I am also chatting about this week.New year new you isn't a bad thing. I want to make sure I mention that up front, but it's not something I think everyone needs to live by, especially since some goals & plans extend year to year & don't require much change. Here are some notes from today's episode:To end this week's topic we are going to talk about how important it is to be as organized as possible in the beginning of the year. Now I'm not saying you have to be super detail orientated & fixated on every single little thing, but kind of having a good idea of what you want to do, to work on & create goals around can really help you accomplish your goals even easier. And you might be thinking that it's too late to get started on being organized for the beginning of the year, seeing as we are already half ways through, but it's not true.As I have mentioned before, I think you can take the first whole month of the year to settle in. You don't have to be ready from day one & feel like you have to be on top of it all. You may even still be deciding what you want to even focus on for goals & continued growth & that's ok!Here are some quick ideas on how to get organized for the new year:Try not to have too many calendars to track everything in.Create helpful routines. Daily, Weekly or Monthly.Cut back on clutter piles.Consider implementing a reminder system. Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi!Have any questions, comments or feedback? Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!Thank you so much for joining me again!Happy Thursday! Here are some notes from today's episode:As the saying goes, if everything were easy, life would be pretty boring. And I am here to tell you today that you should view your setbacks as only stumbling blocks & not a total stop sign.Mistakes, failures, setbacks are experiences that we shouldn't always classify as negative when there is so much to learn & grow from those moments. With a new year in the making, there are inevitably going to be some setbacks that come along with changes, new goals & just muddling through new routines or returning to old routines. And we shouldn't immediately write these things off because these are usually things we cannot avoid. There are plenty of things we can avoid, but nothing is perfect & setbacks will come. It's not a negative way of thinking, it's just reality. And I would hate for you to go into this new year believing that you can set everything up to be perfect & work out in the best way & not expect some stumbling blocks along the way.But I believe the most important message I want you to know is that just because there are stumbling blocks doesn't mean you need to stop. This shouldn't signal any desires to give up or believe you can't do something just because you hit a bump in the road.Bumps are going to come & we have to do our best to weather those storms & make it to the other side stronger & better. And, setbacks can also be a clue to let us know what isn't working & what may need to be adjusted. The last thought I want to leave you with is that by allowing setbacks in your life, you can allow those experiences to break you down & change you for the better. Sometimes our confidence & what we believe is true needs to be shaken up or shattered so it can be put back together stronger. Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi!Have any questions, comments or feedback? Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!Thank you so much for joining me again!Happy Tuesday! Here are some notes from today's episode:As I spoke about yesterday, with not having to change everything about yourself just because it's a new year, it's important to know that you can still create new goals.I made sure to reiterate in yesterday's episode that you should still consider some new goals to add at the top of the year, if you find it complimentary to what you're already working on. And if you do decide to add some new goals, make sure you don't jump head first into anything & go too quickly. You don't have to rush into anything, no matter how important the goal is to you. There is no need to go all in & get yourself overwhelmed, which could easily cause you to have to take a big step back, when you could have just started a little slower & progressed more & more over time. The reason I think taking your time is really important is because taking the time to prepare & actually make a sound decision on whether or not you want to move forward with that goal can save you a lot of time later, if you could have figured out it wasn't for you sooner. Why waste your time diving into something you're only lukewarm for or not completely sure of. It's not a race. And if someone in your life is trying to push you to do something quicker than you'd like, believe me when I tell you that you don't have to do it. You don't have to submit to peer pressure & you don't have to be bullied into doing anything you don't want to do. You might be put down for it, but their actions toward is ONLY a reflection of themself. Also, try to think about goals in smaller amounts of time so that you don't get overwhelmed or give up prematurely. Going month by month or quarter by quarter can help.Big picture: You don't have to rush into anything. It's usually better when you don't.Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @realpositivegirlpodcast or @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi!Have any questions, comments or feedback? Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!Thank you so much for joining me again!Happy Monday! Here are some notes from today's episode:It's a new year, which brings a new mood, but that doesn't mean there has to be a new you to go along with it.New year new you isn't a bad thing. I want to make sure I mention that up front, but it's not something I think everyone needs to live by, especially since some goals & plans extend year to year & don't require much change. The new year to me feels like an ultimate Monday in a good way. I love Mondays so much because there is so much opportunity for new opportunities, new experiences & new mindsets. And while I believe in having that type of reset in your life, I don't think that resetting means you have to change everything, you are just starting again or making a couple of tweaks. And despite what a lot of people may be telling you or sharing online, you can still work on becoming your best self by staying the same. One of the biggest things I see as a problem is not giving changes or shifts in your life enough time to truly affect you. Based on an article I read earlier last year, I believe habits aren't actually created until you are 90 days in. I believe the actual research says 92 days, but still longer than the traditional 30 days. So let's say that you started something in October & the new year comes along & you think you need to change it again just because it's a new year, but you are only just getting into the fully formed habit phase. This means you should just stay the course you are currently on & adjust later, once you've given it time to actually make a difference in your life.I want to end by telling you that you do not have to change just because someone is expecting you to change or because many people around you or in your community circle are changing. It's not necessary or gonna help you create real habits & important changes in your life. Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @realpositivegirlpodcast or @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi!Have any questions, comments or feedback? What might happen if you allowed yourself to challenge the myth to completely reinvent yourself for the New Year? What if instead of the usual trope, you instead chose to invoke a new mantra: New Year, Same You, New Habits? Or New Year, Same You, New Intentions? This could unburden you and reinforce the fact that you can develop new habits while still appreciating and celebrating all that you are right now. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll hear some prompts to help you envision what new habits and intentions you want to create for your financial wellbeing. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some candid reflections on recent events. During the week that pro-Trump, white-supremacist terrorists stormed the US Capitol, Rev. Raphael Warnock also was elected as the first Black senator to represent Georgia. We don’t want to miss the opportunity to celebrate this accomplishment, achieved in no small part by change agents like Stacey Abrams, who mobilized thousands of Black voters in Georgia to come out and vote. If you have been triggered by the incidents that you have witnessed this week, build in time for self-care. Take some ME-time, and know that not being okay is okay. We've got your back. If you're a woman of color who would like to develop a new habit of EFT Tapping, there's still time to join the Libbie chatbot beta test. Get onboard at http://bit.ly/TapWithLibbie! Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!Thank you so much for joining me again!Happy Friday! This week's theme for the podcast is: How to Review Your YearThis week I want to give you some direction on how to give 2020 a full-on review to pull out the amazing positive points, growing opportunities & things to bring into 2021 that are unfinished & continuing.Reviewing your year may sound boring or unnecessary, but it gives you the chance to actually realize how many positives happened, how those things probably outweighed the negatives & what you need to do to make the upcoming year to best yet. Here are some notes from today's episode:What better way to close out the old year & ring in the new year than me encouraging you to come up with mindful changes for the new year. This is going to be more of a quick encouragement, rather than a big lesson or even a checklist. It's important to come up with some sort of changes you would like to implement this new year, just to push yourself, even if you are just working on current goals & not new ones. There are so many lists out there of examples of change you can make to make a difference in your life. For example: volunteer more, adopt and attitude of gratitude, spend less & do more (if possible), create a monthly budget, create specific routines, or even decide to get rid of one bad habit. It does not have to be New Year, New You. It can for sure be New Year, Same You, New Mood. Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @realpositivegirlpodcast or @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi!Have any questions, comments or feedback? To finish out this month’s theme of New Year, Same You, I want to talk about how we get in our own way. We can be our biggest critic, which means we can also be our biggest obstacle. I want each of us to become our biggest cheerleader and supporter! To do that, we have to understand how we are blocking our energy, power, desires, and blessings. Listen in for 4 common roadblocks we put in our path AND 6 tips for clearing the way.
In today's episode we continue to give excuses no chances. As humans especially in this generation we love to make and create excuses where there needs to be none. We put so much emphasis on the New year and what it will do for us when in reality it's just a New Year but the Same You... We talk new year resolutions, the improperly overused phrase 'Toxic friend/partner etc, how we need to start embracing accountability for our actions and if you stick to the end we do a giveaway!

What happens if you break them? The ladies chat about this and more, such as words of the year and intentional naming your decade. For example, the 30's for Ali were all about power. Do you name your year or decade? Did you resolve to do something or not in 2019? There is some wise wisdom in the end. Tune in and check it out! Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe! Happy Superhero Friday! This week we welcome back the Mad Scientist and guarantee we'll either better your life or waste your time, but we sincerely hope to do both. We've got more on the Nintendo Switch, we'll dive into some music and gadgets of the week, and we'll also talk about variety. In This Episode The Mad Scientist returrrrnsss! More about Nintendo Switch ...of the Weeks! Variety is the spice of life Bad Lip Reading: The Force Awakens More of the Same You've heard the adage, "variety is the spice of life"? Because Brian brings it up and expresses his opinion on the matter, I thought it applicable to dive a little bit into the adage. Idioms are funny beasts; they become so much a part of our language, unfamiliar to foreigners or even untraceable in certain cases, that we don't often know where they come from or why they became so popular. This idiom comes from a poem called The Task by William Cowper. (If you're super interested, you can read the whole thing here.) The idealism extends back much further, but the phrase it this form is mostly attributed to William Cowper. Variety's the very spice of life, That gives it all its flavour. There is another interesting line shortly after this one, which says: "We have run through every change that fancy...and, studious of mutation still, discard a real elegance, a little used, for monstrous novelty and strange disguise." Weeding through the 19th Century verbiage, I interpret this quite simply; in our pursuit of spice, we discard things that are truly pleasing for something that is not so familiar. I'm terrible at trying new things. I love the things that are familiar and that I can rely on; after some reflection, I believe this is attributed to being disappointed by new things. I go back to what I know because even if it isn't a "real elegance", it is trusted and I know what I'm getting. With new things, unfamiliar things, I don't know what I'm getting. For me, variety is less important than trusting what I'm getting. That said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a healthy variety! Without people who take risks on new things, we would not have much of an economy, much less a society which innovates itself into the future. What I love about Cowper's poem, however, is that he shows us the good and bad of variety all in a couple lines. Variety's the very spice of life, but don't shed something that is familiar just because it isn't a novelty anymore. There's a lesson for me in this, too. Reading between the lines rather than explicitly stated in Cowper's poem, I believe he's trying to draw attention to a balance and discernment between what is new and what is familiar. Hold onto what is elegant, but the spice of life can be found in variety.
