Speakers included Gargi Bhattacharryya, Aaron Benanav, Francesca Bria, James Meadway, Kate Pickett, John Mcdonnell MP, and David Edgerton amongst many others. PTO was pleased to be an official media partner of the event and in the coming weeks we'll be posting some of the excellent panel discussions that took place at the event. Adventure is an Attitude (0:00:00)The definition of adventure is the excitement and the exploration of the unknown. By those terms, we are all living an adventure as we are definitely exploring and living through the unknown. Perhaps many of our trips and plans were dashed during this experience. But a cancelled flight or a refunded hotel doesn't mean that you can't still find adventure in your life. We are talking today with a friend of the show, Martin Hurlburt, who has lived as much adventure in his life as possible. He coins the phrase, “adventure is an attitude”. Comedic Relief (0:14:12)Is anyone here stressed? I am! We wanted to know the best antidote to stress, and, shockingly enough, it isn't a bubble bath. It's laughing! Research shows that a good, hearty, laugh can relax the body for up to 45 minutes afterward, release feel-good endorphins, shifts perspective, and takes the edge off distressing emotions. So this made me wonder—how can we laugh more? To help us with this endeavor, we've invited Josh Fonokalafi onto the show. Josh is an actor and a comedian! Bring Your Kids to Work From Home (0:35:00)Today is national “bring your kids to work day”... but it's not the same as it once was in the offices of days past. Lately we've all had to bring our work to our kids. But how is that actually panning out? I think we can all relate to our kids crashing our zoom meetings and having to take breaks in our work schedule to make lunch or ensure they're doing their schoolwork. We know it's been hard for parents to adapt to this, so we invited friend of the show Adelia Moore to help us figure out how to manage “bring your kids to work day” every day, and maybe how we can involve our kids in our work a little bit more. Adelia is an author and clinical psychologist who specializes in families and young adults. Living with College Kids (0:50:35)When colleges moved their classes online, many kids packed up their dorm rooms and apartment sa few months early and headed back to their childhood bedrooms. For these adult children, it has been especially difficult to move back under their parent's roof after living independently for so long. And for the parents, trying to force their college kids to live by their household rules has been no easy task. And to top it all off, COVID-19 has put a special little twist on the whole situation making it impossible for either party to leave quarantine and get some space. So, how can parents and their adult children learn to live with each other during this time? Here to share her advice with us is author and social psychologist, Susan Newman. Mini Book Club: Award Winners (1:08:46)Rachel Wadham of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting talks with Lisa and Richie about the newest award winning books that we should check out. Different Types of Flour (1:28:03)From bread to biscuits, cookies to cake, baking is the art of turning flour into food. Cooking with different kinds of flours might sound exciting but choosing the wrong type can lead to a culinary disaster. Knowing the differences of each one will help you feel more comfortable in the kitchen and greatly improve the quality of your creations! Here to help us sift through the details of different kinds of flour and discuss when each one should be used when baking different recipes is Tanya Quinn . Tanya is a home chef.
Martin Hurlburt explains how to adventure from home, Josh Fonokalafi tells funny stories, Adelia Moore discusses Bring Your Child to Work Day, Susan Newman gives tips for living with college kids, Rachel Wadham lists award winning books, Tanya Quinn explains the different kinds of flour.

Adult Kids at Home (0:00:00) When your kid finally turns 18, they probably have one word on their mind: FREEDOM. And they usually tell you how they'd never consider moving back in with you. But, it may be more likely than you think. According to a study done by the Pew Research Center, about 32% of adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents. It's the most common living situation for this age group. While it's not necessarily a bad thing to have one of your adult kids return to live with you, there's still a new dynamic between parent and child that can be hard to navigate. Here to discuss what to expect if your adult child moves back in with you is Dr. Susan Newman, a social psychologist and author. Police Women (0:17:23) We've seen many industries push to include more women in leadership roles, but for some jobs that glass ceiling is harder to break. This includes careers in law enforcement. Studies have shown that less than 13% of police officers are women even though they have important skills and strengths that their male counter parts don't. So what is being done to increase the numbers of female officers? Captain Ivonne Roman founded an organization back in 2017 that aims to help women join the police force in greater numbers. She joins us today to talk about the barriers for female police officers and why we need more women in law enforcement. The Clothing Cycle (0:34:31) Do you remember the days when puffy sleeves, shoulder pads, and combat boots were all in style? We've seen a revival of these throwback trends in recent years as they've returned to the fashion world bringing with them a sense of nostalgia. But this isn't the first time something like this has happened. This phenomenon where clothing trends cycle and recycle has happened for many decades. To understand why this happens and how these trends change over time, we invited Beth Dincuff, a design historian at the Parsons School of Design in New York, to join us on the show.
Susan Newman gives tips for living with adult kids, Ivonne Roman discusses women in the police force, Beth Dincuff chats about how we cycle through clothing.
Special Guest Expert: Susan Newman, PhD Do you or does your child have trouble saying “no?” Do you find yourself saying “yes” to your children when you really want to say “not today,” “I can't swing it,” or just plain “no?” Does your child over-stretch or over-commit because s/he can't seem to say no? Perhaps you or your child is what my next guest calls “a master of yes and a novice of no.” But is all this people-pleasing a problem? As you might have already guessed, of course it is. And- As it turns out, even though it might be difficult to say no, it's vital that we learn how to do it for our own health, wellbeing and stress-levels—and also so that we are teaching our children how to do it too. Is it uncomfortable to say no? Sure, it can be. But constantly saying yes can cause anxiety, anger, stress, regret and feelings of powerlessness. We definitely don't want that. About 2.7 million grandparents in the United States are the primary caregivers for children in their households. Long working hours for young parents, along with the rising costs of professional childcare, have transformed grandparents from occasional babysitters to critical safety nets. Susan Newman, PhD, is a social psychologist and the author of more than a dozen books including Under One Roof Again: All Grown Up And (Re)Learning To Live Together Happily and The Book of No: 365 Ways to Say it and Mean it―and Stop People-Pleasing Forever. What should we as parents do when the well-meaning grandparents in our lives are overindulgent of their grandchildren? Or undermine our parenting choices? And what do we do with our own hurt feelings when our parents don't seem very interested in our kids at all? In this episode we talk about how to create a grandparent relationship that works for everyone. It's worth the effort. Take it from our friend Belinda Luscombe, who when it comes to navigating this relationship, reminds us of the ever-present upside: "Don't let the opportunity of getting to know your in-laws or parents in a different way pass you by." Amazing events are happening around Jersey City, many of which are hosted by Pershing Field Garden Friends, one of the parks in the coalition. Listen in as Susan Newman (aka Suzy Brandtastic) talks with Laura Skolar, one of the founding members and current president of the Jersey City Parks Coalition. In today's talk we're going to talk about FeedJC's Dinner in the Park (series), JC Reservoir's Wild Jazz Adventure (series); The Seasonal poetry, prose and song at JC Height's 942 Summit: Do You Tea?, WHOs Gluten Free, and Bloombury Sq. Also, Washington Park Live on Sept. 26, and multiple parks will have events during JCAST weekend. The Jersey City Parks Coalition is a collection of neighborhood and park groups working together to grow and improve Jersey Cityâ??s park system. The Coalition is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization since 2005. Laura Skolar is one of the founding members of the organization and current President. The Jersey City Parks Coalition has become a significant park and open space advocacy organization. Today we are twenty two members strong representing every ward in Jersey City. We have forged a durable relationship between the community and the City and have strengthened our base by partnering with like-minded organizations. Grants and fundraising to date have produced over $700,000 for park improvements and programming to say nothing of the thousands of volunteer hours that have been invested in our parks every year. Our 2011 BIG DIG initiative, an idea conceived by one of our members for National Make a Difference Day, has brought us national recognition through USA WEEKEND Magazine. This project truly embodied the nationwide effort of volunteerism which engages communities to plan and execute a one-day project that will impact their neighborhood, their community, their city. Our goal of encouraging active participation of residents in the beautification of their local parks and public spaces came to fruition through the positive outreach created by the BIG DIG. We have formalized our partnership with the City of Jersey City through an MOU, which codifies the role of the Parks Coalition and the City regarding the development, use and maintenance of all our parks and public spaces. This may be our greatest accomplishment to date, paving the way for future generations in this public/private enterprise.
