After years of research, journalist Kathleen Lippa has written about the shocking crimes of a trusted teacher who wrought lasting damage on Inuit communities: Arctic Predator: The Crimes of Edward Horne Against Children in Canada's North (Dundurn Press, February 2025). In the 1970s, a young schoolteacher from British Columbia was becoming the darling of the Northwest Territories education department with his dynamic teaching style. He was learning to speak the local language, Inuktitut, something few outsiders did. He also claimed to be Indigenous — a claim that would later prove to be false. In truth, Edward Horne was a pedophile who sexually abused his male students. From 1971 to 1985 his predations on Inuit boys would disrupt life in the communities where he worked — towns of close-knit families that would suffer the intergenerational trauma created by his abuse. In this book, Kathleen examines the devastating impact the crimes had on individuals, families, and entire communities. Her compelling work lifts the veil of silence surrounding the Horne story once and for all. More about Kathleen Lippa: Kathleen Lippa is a Canadian journalist, born in Toronto and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland. Kathleen trained as a professional dancer at The Quinte Ballet School and The School of the Toronto Dance Theatre before embarking on a journalism career. At Memorial University, from which she graduated with a BA (English) in 1998, she worked on the student newspaper, the muse. Following graduation, she worked at a number of Canadian newspapers including The Express (St. John's) where she won a Canadian Community Newspaper Association award for arts reporting, The Hanover Post (Ontario), a number of newspapers under the corporate umbrella of the Northern News Services, 24 Hours (Toronto), and the Calgary Sun. For Northern News Services, after a short stint in Yellowknife, Kathleen served as Bureau Chief in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Her experience includes writing, editing, page layout and design, and photography. Her Northern experience was in a cross-cultural setting primarily reporting news from Inuit communities. After spending many years in Iqaluit, Kathleen now lives with her husband in Ottawa and St. John's. After John A. Macdonald's death, four Tory prime ministers — each remarkable but all little known — rose to power and fell in just five years. From 1891 to 1896, between John A. Macdonald's and Wilfrid Laurier's tenures, four lesser-known men took on the mantle of leadership. Tory prime ministers John Abbott, John Thompson, Mackenzie Bowell, and Charles Tupper headed the government of Canada in rapid succession. Each came to the job with qualifications and limitations, and each left after unexpectedly short terms. Yet these reluctant prime ministers are an important part of our political legacy. Their roles were much more than caretakers between the administrations of two great leaders. Personal tragedy, terrible health issues, backstabbing, and political manipulation all led to their eventual downfalls. The Lost Prime Ministers: Macdonald's Successors Abbott, Thompson, Bowell, and Tupper (Dundurn, 2022) is the dramatic saga of these overlooked Canadian leaders. Veteran UFO researcher/scientist Chris Rutkowski returns to talk with Gene and guest cohost Curt Collins about the state of the field. Among the topics discussed: the pop culture influences from such cases as Roswell, that surprising Harvard study about the possibilities of Earth-based UFOs, such as cryptoterrestrials. That's a theory originally suggested years ago on The Paracast by the late Mac Tonnies. Chris is a science writer who has devoted much time to investigating and studying reports of UFOs, writing about case investigations, and offering his insights into the broad UFO phenomenon. He has a Bachelor's degree in Astronomy and a Master's degree in Science Education, specializing in Astronomy. He was always interested in offbeat things and in 1975 there was a rash of UFO sightings in Manitoba that he began investigating. So he reports that: "I went out with friends and one day I started writing up what I had heard from some of the people that had seen things. I had the article published and soon I was getting requests for more articles and more comments and to give lectures, and pretty soon I was the great UFO expert." Two of his books, published by Dundurn, "Abductions and Aliens" and "The Canadian UFO Report," were national bestsellers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-paracast-the-gold-standard-of-paranormal-radio--6203433/support.

This past weekend I got to participate in my second track and sign evaluation with Tracker Certification North America and one of the most interesting things I learned was some new Earthworm sign which triggered the thought… I really don't know much about Earthworms (class Oligochaeta), but I want to start digging in. I ended up crawling through all of my books to see what I had on the topic, but there wasn't much. A couple paragraphs here, a photo or two there, but there was enough to tickle my curiosity. They are a slippery group of species to distinguish but there are at least some common characteristics across them. Really this is a good reminder that we often take some of the more common species for granted, ignoring the usual, rather than deepening that already accessible and immediately present relationship. Listen to the show if you want to learn more, too. These worms have a lot of interesting things going for them. Some resources I used include:Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Forests by John C. Kricher and Gordon Morrison. Houghton Mifflin, 1988.Nature's Year by Drew Monkman. Dundurn 2012.Tracks and Sign of Insect and Other Invertebrates by Charley Eiseman and Noah Charney. Stackpole Books, 2010. A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America by J. Reese Vashell, Jr.

Mark has a really good heart. Mark is always trying to find a way to help others. Mark Leslie Lefebvre has been writing since he was thirteen years old and discovered his mother's Underwood typewriter collecting dust in a closet. He started submitting his work for publication at the age of fifteen and had his first story published in 1992, the same year he graduated from university. Under the name Mark Leslie, he has published more than a dozen full length books. He pens a series of non-fiction paranormal explorations for Dundurn, Canada's largest independent publisher. He also writes fiction (typically thrillers and horror) and edits fiction anthologies, most recently as a regular editor for the WMG Publishing Fiction River anthology series. The very same year, Mark saw his first short story in print he started working in the book industry as a part-time bookseller, and was bitten by the book-selling bug. He has worked in virtually every type of bookstore (independent, chain, large-format, online, academic and digital). He has thrived on innovation, particularly related to digital publishing, and enjoys interacting with the various people who make the book industry so dynamic. Between 2011 and 2017, Mark worked at the Director of Self-Publishing and Author Relations for Kobo where he was the driving force behind the creation of Kobo Writing Life, a free and easy to use author/small-publisher friendly platform designed to publish directly to Kobo's global catalog in 190 countries. By the end of 2016, Kobo Writing Life established itself as the #1 single source of weeklyglobal unit sales for Kobo and, in primarily English language territories, responsible for 1 in every 4 eBooks sold. Mark has spoken professionally in the United States and Canada, in the UK and across Europe, specializing in advances in digital publishing and the vast and incredible opportunities that exist for writers and publishers. Stark Publishing is an imprint Mark created in 2004 when he released his first book One Hand Screaming. He has used the imprint to publish more than 25 books. Campus Chills (2009) and Obsessions (2020) are two of the titles he used to anthologize other authors writing. Rude Awakenings from Sleeping Rough is the first single author title from a different author that he has published. RUDE AWAKENINGS FROM SLEEPING ROUGH A new non-fiction book by Peter C. Mitchell with his experiences on Life in the streets! Set for release December 1st, 2020 and published by Stark Publishing and editor, Mark Leslie. This is a story that the charities don't want you to read. MORE DETAILS BELOW. About Peter and Mark: London born, Canadian raised Peter Mitchell was bumbling his way through a moderately successful career in business journalism when an investigation into a story on Corporate Social Responsibility inspired him to look beyond profit margins and PR into the very real problems faced by society. This inspiration prompted him to dip his toes into a self-confessed Sanity/Vanity project of a biography of his great, great grandfather, Sir John Kirk. As Secretary of The Ragged School Union, John championed the causes of children, the disabled, and the working poor in Victorian-era London. His influence extended beyond the city limits, and his life proved more interesting than previous biographies revealed. Dust-buried references have faced in the most obscure locales, showing the consequences—both good and bad—to the ragged and crippled children John Kirk devoted his life to help. In 2017, Peter returned to London to complete his research and begin the writing of “A Knight in the Slums.” The past was ready to be mined, and the future was assured. The present, however, took an unpredictable -and darkly ironic—turn. A series of unfortunate events transpired, creating a perfect storm of calamities leaving Peter penniles. UNTIL I SMILE AT YOU: HOW ONE GIRL'S HEARTBREAK ELECTRIFIED FRANK SINATRA'S FAME! by Peter Jennings with contributions by Tom Sandler “Until I Smile At You” reveals for the first time the life of one of the most enduring musical talents in the 20th century: a young Canadian girl named Ruth Lowe, who wrote a song that dynamited Frank Sinatra's career into the stratosphere in 1940, “I’ll Never Smile Again.” The song charted on Billboard for an unheard of 12 weeks and has been recorded by more than 150 performers around the world. In fact, it’s still being recorded today (the book opens in studio as famed Blood, Sweat & Tears singer, David Clayton-Thomas, records his own unique version). Ruth Lowe has been called “One of the Architects of the American Ballad,” she is the recipient of a Grammy Award, her songs have been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and she’s about to be added to the Great American Songbook Foundation Hall of Fame. As Nancy Sinatra says in the book’s Foreword, "There’s a reason why 'I’ll Never Smile Again' has endured: it was a perfect song, interpreted by the perfect singer, at the perfect time.” The book reveals that Ruth Lowe was no one-hit-wonder: she went on to write Sinatra’s theme song, “Put Your Dreams Away” (the last song played at his funeral) plus 50 other tunes for Broadway and Hollywood. (“Until I Smile At You” reveals the humorous story of how she had to write Sinatra’s theme song in under 24 hours.) Amazingly, no one has been privy to Ruth Lowe’s life story until now. Peter Jennings, the book’s author (who has written six other books), was personally selected by her family to write “Until I Smile At You.” And there’s this to add to Ruth’s narrative: in today's era of women claiming their full rights, consider that she was one of the earliest liberated females who worked in a man's world (Tin Pan Alley) and never let her gender, or her attractive good looks, get in the way of her outstanding talent. One of the interesting features of “Until I Smile At You” is Peter Jennings’ interviews with such luminaries as Bernie Taupin (Elton John's lyricist for over 50 years), Sir Tim Rice (who writes lyrics for Andrew Lloyd Webber), Alan Bergman (who has written award-winning songs for Barbra Streisand, Sinatra, etc.), the late Frank Sinatra Jr., music historian Chuck Granata, Sinatra biographer, James Kaplan, and many others... all of whom cast a glow on Ruth’s talents. Also featured are stories from Ruth’s late sister Mickey Cohen, who regales the author with details about how Ruth, whom she adored, wrote “the song.” There is also an interview with noted businessman/philanthropist Seymour Schulich who worked with Ruth’s second husband, Nat Sandler. (It was MGM that wanted to make a movie of Ruth’s life back in the day, staring Judy Garland, but Nat nixed the deal because he didn’t want her clinging to the past.) With the world facing increased levels of stress and anxiety, this is an ideal time for a story like “Until I Smile At You” with its positive, feel-good story of resilience. Peter Jennings writes books from Fairview, his modern home overlooking Georgian Bay in Mundy's Harbour, Midland, Ontario, Canada. "Shark Assault: An Amazing Story of Survival" was published by Dundurn in November, 2015 (http://www.sharkassault.com). The book has received wide acclaim (re-printed less than one month after launch; Readers Digest publishing a 4,000 word excerpt in 15 languages around the world). His newest books, "Why Being Happy Matters" and "Behind The Seams" are now available on Amazon. Peter is also a singer of the Great American Songbook standards (http://www.pjentertainer.com). Farzana Doctor's new novel, Seven, juggles family, history, culture, and the incredible weight of those forces on women today. It's a detective story and travel novel, and a powerful insight into a woman struggling with sex, identity, her past, and her vast network of relatives. But the overarching issue throughout the book is female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice still common around the world. Farzana joins Ben to talk about the book, FGM, her writing process, and much more. About the Guest Farzana Doctor is a writer, activist, and psychotherapist. Her ancestry is Indian, and she was born in Zambia while her family was based there for five years, before immigrating to Canada in 1971. She became interested in community organizing as a teen (primarily environmental issues, gender violence and LGBTTTIQ rights). From 2009-18, she curated the Brockton Writers Series and has been a volunteer with The Writers’ Union of Canada and the Writers’ Trust. She currently volunteers with WeSpeakOut, a global group that is working to ban female genital cutting in her Dawoodi Bohra community. She studied social work in the early nineties and has been a social worker ever since. She worked in a variety of community agencies and a hospital before starting part-time private practice, where she sees individuals and couples. She has been writing all of her life but it became a more regular practice around 2000, when she began writing her first novel, Stealing Nasreen, which was published by Inanna in 2007. Her second novel, Six Metres of Pavement, won a 2012 Lambda Literary Award and was short-listed for the 2012 Toronto Book Award. In 2017 it was voted the One Book One Brampton 2017 winner. Her third novel, All Inclusive was a Kobo 2015 and National Post Best Book of the Year. While all her books are distinct from one another, some common themes include loss, relationships, community, healing, racism, LGBT rights, diasporic identity and feminism. She seamlessly blends strong stories with social justice issues. Her genre so far has been contemporary literary fiction, but here is usually a hint of magic realism in her stories. She's just completed a novel, Seven (August 2020, Dundurn), and a poetry collection. You Still Look the Same. She is currently at work on a YA novel. Farzana was recently named one of CBC Books’ “100 Writers in Canada You Need To Know Now". She is represented by Rachel Letofsky of CookeMcDermid. She’s an amateur Tarot card reader and has a love of spirituality, energy psychology, hypnosis and neuroscience. She lives with her partner and dog near the lake in Etobicoke, the traditional territory of the Haudenosauneega, Anishinabek and Huron-Wendat peoples. Mentioned in this Episode Female genital mutilation (FGM), also called female genital mutilation. Read this WHO fact sheet about the practice that affects millions of women and girls worldwide. In this solo episode, Mark takes a look at his 2018 writing and publishing goals and shares the hits, the misses and the alterations that took place in the past twelve months. He feels it is important to remind writers that if they are already beating themselves up for not completing all the previous year's goals, that he didn't hit all his goals; that he failed at most of them; that he screwed up along the way; that he made mistakes. But also that he adapted several of the goals he'd set as I went along. And he inserted new goals mid-year. That can happen. It will happen. It's how you deal with those changes that can make the difference between seeing it as a complete failure, or seeing it as an ongoing work in progress. Mark then says a word about this episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices . . . Mark first talks about the goals he had set at the beginning of 2018 and how he did with them: 1) Write a non-fiction book called INDIE PUBLISHING INSIDER SECRETS 2) Finish the sequel to A CANADIAN WEREWOLF IN NEW YORK 3) Finish the sequel to EVASION 4) Pitch and write a traditionally published book SPIRITS UNTAPPED - to Dundurn 5) Compile a new full book short story collection 6) Stay retired   He then shares a number of goals for 2019: 1) Publish Audiobook for 7 P's of Publishing Success 2) Publish Audiobook for Killing It on Kobo 3) Finish writing and Publish eBook/Print and audio for Indie Publishing Insider Secrets 4) Publish Audiobook for ACWWINY 5) Publish Audiobook for I, DEATH 6) Publish Audiobook for ONE HAND SCREAMING (story collection) 7) Write and release SCREAMING SKULLS: And Other Haunted Objects in eBook/print and audio 8) Finish the first draft of FEAR AND LONGING IN LOS ANGELES 9) Book new speaking gigs - Ideally, another keynote either in the last half of 2019 or the first half of 2020   Mark also shares his 2018 eBook sales percentages: Kindle - 45.97% Kobo - 20.68% StoryBundle - 20.27% BundleRabbit - 6.80% Apple - 3.25% Nook - 2.30% Direct Sales - 0.30% Google - 0.21% Scribd - 0.12% Tolino - 0.06% Smashwords - 0.04%   Mark talks about what he achieved and what he didn't achieve in 2018. He talks about what he did well and what he didn't do well. He reminds writers of the importance of focusing on the forward momentum made, even where a goal wasn't completed, if there was forward momentum that is a step in the right direction.   The music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

Bill Bogart is University Professor and Professor of Law at the University of Windsor, as well as the author of Off the Street: Legalizing Drugs, which explores research-based drug policy. Bill is interested in the actual impact laws have on socioeconomic conditions. Over the last eight years, Bill has also written books on gambling and obesity and was struck how drugs have been not been subject to the same regulatory and educational approach as the other two. In this episode, he makes a case for the legalization of all recreational drugs while using medical supervision and education to reduce harm among users. EDIT: Bill mentioned that there is no legal source of cocaine currently available. However, he wanted me to note that this was a mistake and that there is still a legal supply of cocaine, specifically as a topical pain reliever. England legally accesses the drug for that purpose. HIGHLIGHTS: -Bill discusses how criminalization has not driven down drug use amongst the population. -The effectiveness of regulation and education in combating smoking. -Moving away from criminalization and toward harm reduction. -Addressing safe injection sites and why they're an indication of changing attitudes. -How legalizing and regulating drugs will not only reduce crime but contribute to the economy. -Moving away from abstinence-only drug education and toward discussing moderation and risk-assessment; "Permit, but discourage." -How do we approach the legalization of party drugs such as cocaine? -Differentiating between use and harmful use, and the important of introducing a social support system alongside legalization. -Why the United States' drug policies could negatively impact Canada's changing ones. QUOTES: "Shifting behavioural patterns... is a long, tough, complicated battle." "Use and criminal sanctions are not very closely related." "What is it in your life that you want to use heroin to try to blot it out?" "The opioid crisis is forcing us in this emergency context to face drug usage." "The silver lining of the very, very dark cloud of the opioid crisis is that we are actually moving to a context of legalization." "If we legalize drugs, we confront the thugs!" "I fear the notion that legalization will somehow become equated with approval." "Anybody who thinks that capital punishment is going to solve this is from the dark side of the Moon." In this episode of Paranormal Underground Radio: In The Dark, we talk with Mark Leslie, whose writing has been described as “Twilight Zone” in nature. Mark is a writer, editor, and bookseller who still cowers under the covers when he hears strange noises in the night, worried that the monster under the bed might finally get him. Despite his fear of the dark and the shadows, he travels around with a life-sized skeleton named Barnaby. Mark’s affinity for storytelling started at an early age, converting his childhood fears into tales to be shared around the campfire, and hammered out his first serious attempt at a “novel” on an Underwood typewriter when he was 13 years old. While that book will never see the light of day (for good reason), he sold his first short story in 1992 and received honorable mention in The Years Best Fantasy & Horror for it, and has since published the short story collection One Hand Screaming (2004) and the horror novel I, Death (2014), as well we edited the anthologies North Of Infinity II (2006), Campus Chills (2009), and Tesseracts Sixteen (2014).
